This edition is loaded with festive cheer, including lots of businesses we know and love sending their joy and best wishes. We have our usual favourites with ‘Lets talk legal’ from Evolve Family Law, Merry Fitness from JWC, a special article about managing stress at Christmas by Karen from Cheshire Clinical Reexology, Safer Motoring by Congleton IAM and much more.Sadly, we have no Grandma’s Kitchen as due to a burst pipe her kitchen ooded. In the meantime we have all rallied round with microwave meals, she can reheat. Hopefully she will be back up and running for Christmas, although we have booked our Christmas Day lunch at the Red Lion, just in case!We also have some special input on how to make a Christmas Wreath, which has been kindly supplied by Elworth Flower Club.Thank you to all our readers, advertisers and contributors, for your support in 2019, I am already thinking about the rst edition in 2020 and if you have some interesting community content, please get in touch. It’s really easy, call me on 07541 600131 and your story could be posted through the letter boxes of over 4500 homes.I wish you a wonderful Christmas and a fantastic New Year – and I will see you at the Holmes Chapel Christmas Fair for some Mulled Wine! 6Christmas healthWe wish you a stress-free Christmas. It’s the most wonderful time of the year, or it should be, but surveys from One-Poll reveal that for many people Christmas is the most stressful time of the year, with New Year’s Eve coming in at second in the stress stakes. The pressure of delivering the perfect Christmas and expensive presents lead to 12% of the UK wishing they could skip the festive season all together. This year, try some of these seasonal stress-busting tips to make this the most enjoyable Christmas.Get organised - Make sure you buy, or order your presents well ahead of time. There is nothing worse than the stress of ghting your way through over crowded shops, or ordering online, only to realise your much needed gift is being shipped from Outer Mongolia! Also, get ahead with food preparation. Lots can be made in prepared in advance and frozen, giving you more time to enjoy the big day.Stay hydrated - Drinking plenty of water helps to keep your immune system healthy and also our stress levels down. Unfortunately, prosecco doesn’t contribute to your uid intake, so if you are drinking alcohol remember to have a glass of water in between drinks to help reduce the risk of dehydration.Get enough sleep - Feeling tired can make it more difcult for our bodies to cope with stress, so make sure you don’t burn the midnight oil and get plenty of rest.Schedule in some me time - Make sure you make some time to look after yourself. Reexology is a complementary therapy which is shown to reduce stress and improve your sleep and may give you a much needed break from the festive preparations.Regular exercise - Although we can feel we don’t have the time, regular activity really helps to reduce stress. Choose something you enjoy such as walking, swimming or yoga.Don’t try to create the perfect Christmas - It’s easy to look at how Christmas is portrayed on TV or in movies and put pressure on ourselves to try to recreate this. Remember these are not real and this pursuit of perfection can be extremely stressful, and probably unrealistic. People want to see you at Christmas, not a perfect Christmas cake, or gifts that look like the are straight from Macy’s shop window.Have fun! - This is the most important thing of all. Laughter is a great form of stress relief, so don’t worry if the dog has eaten the cake and the tree is bald by the 24th, just enjoy time with your friends and family! Wishing you a happy, healthy and stress-free Christmas from Cheshire Clinical Reexology!Karen - Cheshire Clinical Reexology

10H to make...A Christmas Wreath. Make this beautiful wreath designed by Wedding and Event Florist Jacqui Owen from Nantwich. Jacqui is a member of Elworth Flower Club which meets at Bradwall Village Hall in Sandbach. The Wreath uses materials gathered from your garden, bought from your local orist or large garden centre. If you can’t nd the greenery on the list use similar materials. You can also buy material from the sales table at your local Flower Club. Materials you will need • 14 or 16 inch foam wreath ring• 15 x 20cm cinnamon sticks• 1 or 2 lengths of 1.5 stub wire• 12 lotus heads• Bundle of myrtle• Pack of coconut stars• Parvifolia or other small leaved eucalyptus• Ribbon of your choice• Pittosporum and other small garden greenery • Small bells wired onto bullion wire• Dried Hydrangea, sprayed ½ gold and ½ copperStep 1Place foam wreath ring on draining board or on outside paving and soak with water. Make sure the ring is thoroughly wet as this is important to the long life of the nished ring. Fold the wire in half and make a loop and then attach wire around the ring to enable door hanging.Step 2Cut small groups of selected foliage. Clean about 1 inch of the stems and insert around the edge of the ring. Fir and conifer from your garden can be added if you wish.Step 3Having greened up the outside of the ring, continue to ll in the top of the ring until it is fully greened.Step 4Wire bundles of 3 cinnamon together. Bind with ribbon to hide wire and attach small bells. Insert 4 or 5 bundles into the ring. Wire lotus pods at the base and insert into ring. Hot glue stars onto wire and insert into ring. Use your own style and taste to position accessories. For hangingSelect a nice ribbon, make a bow and twist wire around the centre. Insert into the ring either at the top or the bottom. Choose a ribbon to match or contrast. Patterned ribbons look great.Table decorationChoose suitable candles and candle holder and arrange in the centre of the ring. These items can be bought at one of the many candle shops in towns or shopping centres. If you use the wreath as a table centre it is probably better to use the 14 inch ring. Try different ways of displaying the candles in the ring or using 1 large candle.Be creativeYour wreath can be made more amboyant by adding shiny balls, dried orange and lemon slices or other items of your choice.Thank you to Elworth Flower Club for providing this how to, for more information: 01270 753 302 / 01477 544 166www.elworthowerclub.co.ukelworth flower clubpassion bydesign

14Patient Panel updateHealth Centre Redevelopment. We are pleased to report that Holmes Chapel Health Centre has been awarded an NHS development grant, which together with a major investment by the GP Partners will give us the 6 brand new consulting rooms and refurbish existing rooms, so we will gain 3 new rooms overall, but modernise the ground oor, reception, waiting room and dispensary. This will make best use of the space available on the site and amongst other benets it will ease the congestion in the dispensary and will improve patient condentiality at reception.Work will be commencing in November 2019 and complete as soon as possible after March 2020.Inevitably there will be some extra noise and some disruption during the new build, which may include changing some surgery session times. Internal builder work will also be tricky to manage. The patience of patients will be appreciated. But longer term this will give us a medical practice t for the future. The plans are on the noticeboard in the Health Centre foyer. The GP Partners are grateful for the support of all patients and especially the patient panel for their support on the bid to the NHS for the development grant. Triaging Trial. The system has been subject to a full review in November by the GP Partners. The experiment has achieved its aims of giving more access to the appropriate clinician. However, further consideration needs to be given as to whether handling of the telephone calls by staff, then the triage team is the best use of staff skills and to give the patient a good experience too. In the trial all the triaging was done by a clinician – normally a GP or a Nurse Practitioner. The aim of the GP Partners is to decide whether or not the triage experiment will now become the usual way of working.John Wilson, Chair Holmes Chapel Health Centre Patient Panel

18O local hitageThe manor of Cranage was mentioned in the Domesday Survey of 1086 and it is possible that a hall was built there not long afterwards. By the seventeenth century a “brick mansion house” occupied the site, though this was demolished when the present building was erected in 1829. For centuries the Hall was the centre of a large agricultural estate and the home of a series of wealthy families, most notably the Needhams, who acquired the property by marriage to the heiress Alice Cranach. In 1625 Sir Robert Needham was created Viscount Kilmorey, though by then the main branch of the family had moved to Shropshire and other relatives occupied the Hall. It was sold in 1660 to William Swettenham and sold again in 1679 to the Reverend William Harrison, who was the son of a Tatton farmer. Most of the land remained in the ownership of the Needhams until 1760, when the manor was sold to Thomas Bayley Hall of the Hermitage. Several generations of Harrisons lived at Cranage Hall until it was sold to the Reverend John Armitstead, vicar of Goostrey, in 1814. In 1828 his son Lawrence bought the neighbouring Hermitage Estate and commissioned Lewis Wyatt to build the ne new house at Cranage where he lived until his death in 1874. A cousin, the Reverend John Richard Armitstead, Vicar of Sandbach, inherited and occupied the Hall from 1877 to 1918. His son, the Reverend John Hornby Armitstead, Vicar of Holmes Chapel from 1899 to 1918, was the last Armitstead to live there. In 1900 the Hall was leased to William Oswald Carver, owner of a cotton mill in Marple, who purchased the estate in 1920. By 1927, having lost two of his sons in the First World War, he decided to downsize, moved to Hartford Hall, and put Cranage up for auction. Its days as a family home were over.It was not until 1929 that the Hall and grounds were acquired by the local health board for use as a mental hospital. The Hall housed the ofces and the Cranage Colony, a small village in its own right, was built in the grounds. This included residential villas, a social hall, swimming pool, shop, cafe and maintenance buildings. The Colony employed many local people and its closure in 1995 shocked the community. The Hall fared particularly badly in the three years it lay empty, with thieves taking all the oak panelling, doors, oorboards, replaces and even the main staircase! Thankfully, it was purchased by a hotel group and comprehensively renovated, retaining its status as a Grade 2 listed building. Today it is the DeVere Cranage Estate Hotel and conference centre.Holmes Chapel U3A Local History Group

22As road users we must take in information, give out information and therefore communicate with our fellow travellers. On approach to a hazard, for example a roundabout, we must take information from signage, lane markings, trafc density ahead and behind, pedestrian crossings, the type of roundabout, our thoughts on entry and leaving the roundabout and any backseat drivers we have on board including the satnav.Having received all this information, in a split second, we must give out information to our fellow road users if we are to get around this hazard safely. Our correct way of giving appropriate information, thereby communicating with others, is proper use of our vehicle indicators and other methods like headlights and horn or, as a cyclist, by hand/arm signals. So, do you indicate properly? We should indicate in a timely, thought out manner, avoiding whenever possible, the last gasp half second indication. Indicating even when you have decided that nobody is around is generally good driving practice in case there is someone you have missed. Car and other vehicle drivers should be aware that pedestrians also need to know of your intentions. Headlamps are designed to enable us to see, to be seen and to give out a ash indication. To see is a given, being seen is when light conditions dictate your visibility to other road users is reduced, for example in bad weather, dusk or dawn conditions and obviously in darkness. Remember the use of fog lamps is illegal unless it is actually foggy.A headlight ash should only be used to indicate your presence. Many of us use it to indicate to others that they may go rst at a junction etc. If you must do this be absolutely sure that you are giving indication to the individual road user, as you intend, and that this ash cannot be misinterpreted by another road user leading to unintended consequences. Remember that when you do this you are taking it upon yourself to tell another road user that all is well, and it is safe to carry out the manoeuvre. If the worst happens you will nd that insurance companies are not that forgiving when it is not clear cut who is to blame. The best advice in these circumstances is to give space and time to the other person and let them decide to make or not make the manoeuvre. The use of the headlight ash is explained in the Highway Code and I recommend readers to look it up.The horn should not be used as a tool to rebuke others whenever you feel like it. It is a vital equipment which should be used to alert your presence to others. The Highway Code outlines when and where it should and should not be used.Taking information and communicating information are basic skills required of all drivers and other road users and form the basis of advanced driving techniques.IAM RoadSmartCongleton and Maccleseld.Saf moting

26My fitness . . .We’ve all got excuses as to why we are and not where we want to be. There’s an abundance of stories that we can tell ourselves and others as to why we’re unhealthy and unhappy. In fact, I’ve probably used them myself. That said, and to be totally blunt, the world doesn’t care about your stories. I often relate people’s health and tness journey to business. There’s a lot of synergy between the two; they share many of the same barriers and it takes much the same mindset to be successful. There will always be a plethora of reasons to give up but plentiful rewards for persistence! In the past when business has been tough, we’ve blamed stafng problems, competitors, the tax man – anybody apart from ourselves because in your own bubble things tend to be all sunshine and rainbows. It wasn’t until we took a step back and realised that the stories that we were telling were the reason that we weren’t progressing. They were all genuine barriers to success, but it was our reaction that was going to determine our success or failure. Once we accepted total responsibility for each and every action the outcomes suddenly changed and business began to ourish. Now let’s look at your health, tness and physique. Whatever it is that’s holding you back whether you’re diabetic, have an underactive thyroid, have multiple injuries or mental health problems, one thing that I can unequivocally tell you is that somebody before you has been there, done it and beaten it! So yes, I emphasise with your situation and I appreciate your barriers and possible limitations, but your actions right now are going to determine your future success or failure. 28Investment in the nt genatiExcitement grows as King’s prepares to move to £60-million campus. Staff and students at The King’s School in Maccleseld could not be more excited as they prepare to move to a new, state-of-the-art campus next year. The rapidly emerging buildings are due for completion by June next year and have recently been visited by hundreds of pupils, parents, staff and prospective families, who are unanimously inspired by the new facilities. As one prospective parent put it: “Both myself and my son were blown away by the new facilities. They are world class and will give King’s some of the best sporting and academic facilities in the North West of England.” King’s Headmaster Dr Hyde said: “It is always a pleasure to show people around the campus: everyone leaves feeling inspired, enthused and excited for next year.”Located between Maccleseld and Over Alderley, the 80-acre campus will feature a main academic building designed to incorporate as much natural light as possible, and will contain bespoke learning facilities for infants, juniors, seniors and Sixth Form pupils. A separate Sports Centre will contain a 6-lane swimming pool, sports hall, indoor cricket nets and dance/martial arts studio. Outside, there will be an impressive range of sports facilities. King’s will maintain its current network of school coaches, including one covering the villages, as well as provide a shuttle bus from Maccleseld train station to the new campus. www.kingsmac.co.uk/new-campusCharity No. 1137204Entrance ExaminationsInfants: Dare to Discover MorningFriday 17 January, 2020Saturday 7 March, 10am–12pmCharity No. 113720401625 260000 www.kingsmac.co.ukTop performing school at GCSE & A LevelBursaries & Scholarships at 11+ & 16+NEW £60m campus opening September 2020Charity No. 1137204

30Ho! Ho! Ho! For Christmas with Holmes Chapel Partnership! Not long to wait now for our Christmas Market on 1 December, 4.00–7.00pm. All the stalls are booked and what a variety on sale from knitted jumpers to sparkling jewellery and art ‘with a difference’ to toys for the young people and little luxuries for the not so young! Our uniformed organisations and charity groups will have stalls helping them to raise much needed funds for their various causes. Hot drinks will keep us warm; mince pies, tasty BBQ burgers and baps will stave off the hunger pains whilst mulled wine and other tipples will help the Christmas spirit. Church bells will call us and choirs, dancing, a musical organ and festive music will entertain us. Father Christmas will be there too along with an exciting ride usually only seen on a fairground. This will be our eighth Christmas market and we are sure, well worth a visit. For three hours some of our shops and businesses, the Co-op car park, St Luke’s Church Hall, the Scout HQ and Holmes Chapel centre is heaving with folk from our village and further aeld. We would really appreciate some help in making this event happen! 38PCSO reptYour local ofcers have got a lot to get involved in this December as the village comes together as a community to get ready for Christmas, we are especially looking forward to attending the Holmes Chapel Christmas markets so please come and say hello if you see us!With Christmas in mind, we try and prioritise the residents that unfortunately may be quite lonely at this time of year and with that we would ask that if you could take a spare minute in your day to check on your elderly neighbours and residents it would be greatly appreciated – not only by us but I’m sure they would appreciate the thought also. As the nights grow darker (and especially colder!) we could all do with a friendly face checking in on us.Unfortunately around the winter we tend to see an increase in crime as the nights are dark, so we would like to encourage our community to report any suspicious activity to us on 101, or via the local contact email Crewe.LPU@cheshire.pnn.police.uk. If you are concerned about giving information, you can also do this anonymously through Crimestoppers where none of your personal information is taken or logged - 0800 555 111. Once a week, every week we also hold a local community meeting in Holmes Chapel for an hour where I will be available. This is an opportunity for the public to come and have a chat to us and the dates can be found here - www.cheshire.police.uk/local-policing/crewe/dane-valley. Alternatively the dates are also posted outside of Holmes Chapel Community Centre, Station Road.If you are interested in more of our activity please follow us on social media where we are able to speak directly to you as our community about incidents and crimes we are nding in the area. Please like our Facebook page Dane Valley Police or follow or Twitter account @DaneValleyPol. Liz Chesters - PCSO

42Pish Cncil newsThis month we would like to introduce you to two of our elected Councillors; Cllr Michael Blomeley and Cllr Rab Parry.I moved to Holmes Chapel with my wife ve years ago and we think this is a great place to live. My career was primarily with one of the major UK textile companies where I managed a range of manufacturing operations, ultimately becoming Managing Director of a business supplying key retailers in the UK and overseas. After I retired from work, I undertook consultancy work on environmental control systems. I was also invited to join my local Parish Council, serving on it for over ten years, including three years as Chairman. That led me into local politics and I stood for election to the District Council. I was later elected leader of a political group on the Council and subsequently became Council Leader for two years. It was quite a challenging time, running a “hung” council after the nancial crash, but a very satisfying experience. After suffering from a debilitating back condition, I felt unable to continue as a councillor and eventually had major surgery to alleviate the condition. As a result, we decided to move nearer to our daughter, for whom we do some childminding, nd somewhere less hilly to live and look for a smaller, more manageable property. Our house search led us through Holmes Chapel one day and we decided to stop for lunch. Well, that did it! A village atmosphere, good road links, a railway station, local shops, three pubs and lovely countryside. When the Parish Council asked for volunteers to help with producing a neighbourhood plan, I decided to get involved, partly because I had some knowledge of planning procedures and also to become involved with my local community. With a touch of deja-vu, I was asked if I had considered joining the Parish Council! I was re-elected to the Council this year to continue what I hope is a useful contribution to our community. I have focussed much on trafc and transport issues in the village. We continue to put pressure on Cheshire East Council for improvements, particularly given the impact of new residents coming to enjoy life here. I currently chair the Village Infrastructure Committee and the Trafc & Transport volunteer working group and manage the operation of our speed indicator devices (SIDs).Contrary to popular belief, I was born in Wales, but moved to Scotland at age 10. I am married to Jenny and have two grown up children and 2 grandchildren.I have lived in Holmes Chapel since 1968 and for a long part of that time I have been involved in local government in the area serving on the following councils:• Holmes Chapel Parish Council from 1980 to present, having been Chairman twice. In May 2020, I will have served as a Parish Councillor for forty years!• Congleton Borough Council from 1981 to 2003 where, at various times, I Chaired the Finance and also Planning Committees, was Exec member for resources and was Borough Mayor in the year 1999/00.• Cheshire County Council from 1993 to 2001 where I was Deputy Chairman in the years 2000/01 and majored in Education, Police, Fire & Social Services.• To my knowledge I am the only councillor who as served on all ve local authorities: police, re, Cheshire County Council, Congleton Borough Council and the Parish Council. At one stage I served on all ve at the same time! I am now an Honorary Alderman for Cheshire East.I have also served on other different bodies including the Cheshire Brine Subsidence Compensation Board, Cheshire County Adoption Panel, Manchester Airport Consultative Committee and Cheshire Community Action. I take an active interest in various local organisations including a local art club. I enjoy painting and teach art through the U3A.The best interests of Holmes Chapel are in my heart and I am keen to see our village well looked after. I appreciate the way the village looks with all the owers and through the hard work of the village volunteers. I was delighted to be re-elected last May and will continue to ght for the village I love.First Youth Cinema. 46It is coming up to the end of November, which means that the So You Think You Can Dance competition is coming up! Many groups, duets and soloists will be performing on the 21st November. They have all been attending weekly rehearsals run by Mrs Thomas- One of the PE teachers. All the students have been working hard both inside and outside of school to perfect their dance routines and as we all know, performing in front of a large crowd isn’t easy at all. If you want to show your support for the local talent that we have at Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School don’t hesitate to get your tickets because everyone is welcome! It is sure to be an inspiring night with notable past dances moving the audience in honour of Nell Jones. The school has also had some major renovations- The brand new ‘snack shack’ is bursting with customers every break time and the new canopy and seating area is a perfect place to be outside, whilst staying out of the British rain!“A new team of Students (The Holmes Chapel High Council) has recently come together! There a number of students who will help make decisions and bring feedback on how to make the school better! The team consists of students ranging from year 7 to 6th Form. This will bring an array of opinions from all year groups because we have representatives from each which will be gathering information and feeding back to both the High Council and the senior leadership team. This tailored and specic feedback will enable staff to understand the voice of the students better to help improve the school” Maddie Lusby (Year 8)“My personal views on the high council are very positive. I believe that a school can only improve by reacting on the students’ voices. In this school, we also celebrate each others achievements and work together as a team. Because we have the Holmes Chapel High Council in place, I think that is why we, as a school community, are so strong! “In terms of activities we are once again looking forward to the Christmas Fair. Like previous years, we are going to run a stall. Our school is honoured to have this opportunity to represent the school and spend some time in the local community celebrating the festive spirit. We will be looking to sell goods and trinkets to raise money for our remembering Nell Charity.” Tabitha Alcock-Bailey (Year 8)Autumn is a beautiful time of year and the children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the changing seasons, watching reworks and carving pumpkins. As a church school, we chose to celebrate Pumpkin Heroes, a Christian program run by World Vision UK. Children brought in pumpkins carved with inspiring messages and symbols of peace and love, and these looked wonderful illuminated in our worship. We then used the pumpkins to form part of our treasure hunt in the woods, where children had to nd the letters and construct the message, ‘Jesus is the light of the world.’ Back in class, children completed a range of activities which included making friendship bracelets and Rice Krispy pumpkins. Before half term, Year 5 visited Chester Cathedral as part of their Pilgrim Day. Our Schl reptspupils learnt about pilgrimage in the past and how the cathedral is used today. Throughout the day, the children took part in a range of activities, such as calligraphy, design and hand bell ringing. The children thoroughly enjoyed their day.During our nal week of the half term, the children had an opportunity to share their learning with parents and friends. Our Learning Exhibition displayed what the children had been studying in class, as well as work they had completed at home. We were truly amazed by the fantastic work produced, which included tried and tested recipes, working models of air raid shelters, sock whales and model homes. The children took great pride in sharing their achievements and they have thoroughly enjoyed their new topics. This week we are busy preparing for Remembrance Day. This is a special time of reection and the children always demonstrate such maturity and compassion. Year 2 will be leading our service at St Oswald’s on Remembrance Day. Looking ahead, our Christmas Fair is on the 29th November at 6pm and we have a huge variety of stalls and games on offer. It would lovely to welcome members of our community so please do come along. Pupils will also soon begin to prepare for Nativities, a highlight in our school calendar. 50Thank y  St Luke’s Generous residents in Holmes Chapel have raised just under £6,000 for St Luke’s over the last few months. The Holmes Chapel Support Group – which has been dedicated to raising funds for the Hospice for more than 30 years - has enjoyed a bumper summer of fundraising. Events have included a street collection in the village, golf day and summer concert. In addition the group has received donations from the funerals of two well-known residents, an 80th birthday and Golden Wedding celebration. Dennis Eborall, chairman of the Holmes Chapel Support Group, said: “Over recent months, Holmes Chapel residents have been extraordinarily generous in their donations to St Luke’s Hospice. The group would like to pass on their heartfelt thanks to all concerned.“The recent street collection in the village raised £543. We received £700 from the funeral of Polly Howkins, a much loved Holmes Chapel resident, and £675 from the funeral of Roy Porter who was Holmes Chapel Support Group Treasurer for a number of years. We also received £1,100 in donations from the 80th Birthday celebration of David Monks, who has raised considerable sums over the years by opening his garden in support of St Luke’s.“One of our supporters, Alan Imrie raised £1,480 with a Golf Day. We received £327 from the closure of the Holmes Chapel Ladies’ Probus and £265 from the Holmes Chapel Chorus Summer Concert, plus numerous other donations.“The Holmes Chapel Support Group was established more than 30 years ago, before the Hospice was even built, and it is still going strong. We are very, very grateful for the amazing level of support for St Luke’s from the residents of Holmes Chapel. Long may it continue!”Angela Slack, Community Partnerships Manager for St Luke’s, said: “We are incredibly grateful to everyone in Holmes Chapel who has helped to raise such an amazing amount of money towards patient care here at St Luke’s. “The Hospice simply couldn’t stay open without the help of our supporters and we are so thankful for the continued fundraising by the Holmes Chapel Support Group. Their unwavering dedication and determination to raise money for the Hospice over the last 30 years is just amazing and we can never thank them enough.”St Luke’s (Cheshire) Hospice

54M it up this Christmas...Following on from last months’ article on rum-based cocktails, I’m going to stick with mixology as we enter the countdown to the big Ho-Ho-Ho. Why? Well, this is the time of year when we tend to go a little bit outside our comfort zones when it comes to drinking. We see it in the bars, with our customers being more adventurous with the types of beers, or gins & mixer combinations, so why not throw a few more avour pairings into the mix so that next time you’re out, or entertaining at home, you can take those drinks to another level of enjoyment. We’ll start with the bartenders basic 4 fruits; lemon, lime, orange & grapefruit. Aside from them all being citrus fruits, they each & go well with basil, black pepper, pineapple & strawberries. Lemon pairs very well with spices such as cardamom & ginger, fruits such as plum & nectarine, herbs like basil & mint, & almonds. Try a wedge in a nut liquor or even a sweet desert wine. Lime loves apple, strawberry, ginger & cherry, so next time you go for that vodka lime & soda, add a slice of apple or some ginger peel to your glass. Orange is such a great avour to have in your drink, add a slice with some chocolate, vanilla, nutmeg or cinnamon, or any nut to bring out those warming sweet spicy notes. Grapefruit is surprisingly versatile in that its sharp grassy tang works well with sweet elements like vanilla, banana or caramel. Add a slice to a sparkling wine & see how it highlights otherwise muted aromas & notes.Other fruits like strawberries go with brandy, as does pineapple, & pomegranate goes well with apple in a gin or a glass of port. Melon & champagne is another lovely combination, so why not put a few melon balls in the freezer ready to drop into your glass next time you fancy a bit of zz.We’ll look at herbs, spices & other avour centres next month, so until then get experimenting!Rich - The Beer Emporium

58FOGS members celebrate success in national and local competitions! FOGS members are delighted to announce that their entry won the ACoRP Photo and Video competition. The result was announced at the National Awards Ceremony of the Association of Community Rail Partnerships (ACoRP) in Telford on Thursday 3rd October. Monica and Peter Robson, accompanied by Mike and Ayleen Jarvis, were there to receive the engraved trophy, a certicate and a cheque. Many thanks to all who voted for our entry. In the ‘It’s Your Station’ category, the 32 nominated stations were split by the judges into Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum sections. Goostrey Station was placed in the Gold group and received a certicate. Whilst we did not win, this was a signicant achievement and puts us in the top 10 of entries nationally. We punch well above our weight! Locally, FOGS has a Gold award from Wild about Goostrey. The scheme is supported by Goostrey parish council and encourages residents to make habitat improvements which will increase biodiversity and wildlife connectivity. However, Vice Chair of FOGS Mike Jarvis commented that “if we are to build on our success, we need more people to come forward and help. Many of the current team are approaching, or over 80 years of age.” Chair of FOGS Craig Sidebotham added “New members must learn about our rail contacts because there is a complex structure to deal with. If no-one comes forward, then in a few years Goostrey station could return to being a blot on the landscape. That would be a great pity especially as we are nearing the point where the newly renovated former ticket ofce will be re-opened. At that stage, we will need to liaise with the franchise holders Northern to persuade them that the building should be available for community and learning projects for young and old.”To ensure that passengers continue to enjoy using Goostrey station, our working parties continue on the second Sunday of each month (except in November when we meet on the third Sunday) starting at 10am. New volunteers are always welcome. For more information, please contact Mike Jarvis on 01477 533981 or look at the FOGS website. Currently we have no store room, so it would be best if helpers brought tools such as brushes, spades, forks, loppers or secateurs. There will be a few spares available for those not able to bring their own. While working, every volunteer must wear one of our orange safety jackets; orange is the specied railway safety colour and yellow ones can confuse train drivers travelling at speed. No-one should work alone at the station in case there is an accident.Friends of Goostrey Stationwww.friendsofgoostreystation.orgFriends of Gsey StatiFOGS winning photo : Enjoying a break during a volunteer working party at Goostrey Station

62Let’s talk legalNew Year: new beginnings. None of us at Evolve Family Law can believe that we are heading into 2020. Most of us can remember what we were doing at the turn of the century but cannot get to grips with how twenty years have ashed by. Over the last two decades family law has changed almost beyond recognition with the focus now on family agreements, put in place to avoid any disputes if a relationship breaks down in the future. New Year is a good time to look forward and see what is trending in family law. All of us at Evolve Family Law have seen a move towards reaching family law agreements which the court now regard as heavily inuential on any eventual outcome, often referred to as ‘’front loading’’. Various types of agreements have really gained in popularity, such as:• Cohabitation agreements;• Prenuptial agreements;• Postnuptial agreements ;• Wealth protection documents, for example, trusts and Wills. Some may think the new popularity of family law agreements is because as a society we are getting more cynical about relationships and whether they will survive the test of time. However, at Evolve Family Law, clients are overwhelmingly positive about why they see these agreements as a sensible approach to any new marriage or cohabitation and good opportunity to have a sensible, honest and cooperative discussion about how they see their relationship working, and how everything would be resolved if the relationship does not work out. It may seem bizarre to be talking about a future separation when you are about to live with your partner for the rst time or are about to get married. However, many people have children from a previous relationship, or parents who are providing nancial assistance to buy their house, so being upfront about how this will work gives everyone a greater sense of security. Family law agreements, look at the ‘’what ifs’’. By setting out what will happen they really help avoid acrimonious court proceedings because the agreement lays out the ground rules for a separation, discussed at a time when a couple are willing to be fair to one another.Whatever the nature of the family law agreement it is important that the content of the agreement is considered to be fair to both parties to it. That way not only do a couple start their relationship with a new beginning but they set the tone for how they will treat one another during the relationship and also the way in which they will part if they sadly end up going their separate ways.Evolve Family Law
