From Katy T hank you for picking up and thumbing through the December January edition of The Villages Mag it s an honour to have the details about the Holmes Chapel Virtual Christmas Market on the front cover and in the centre pages The Market is one of my favourite days of the year with local traders on the Co op Car park and in the Scout Hut Father Christmas the smell of the hog roast singing Christmas carols Mulled wine a few cups and then finishing off the evening round a big table in one of the pubs with our family and friends Hopefully next year we can do it all again This is our Christmas edition and we have tried to give the magazine Christmas feeling throughout As I type like many of you I have no idea how I will be spending Christmas day yet we have booked a table somewhere and have our fingers crossed We have decided our Christmas won t be cancelled if we can t all meet up we will simply postpone it We don t care if this means turkey and tinsel in May or June we will redecorate the house with lights and I may even invest in a snow machine our neighbours will love us You might think I am being optimistic when I say May or June but that s how as a business owner I have made it through the year so far staying positive and being grateful for all the support we have had from our readers and businesses This will continue as long as I need it too For many businesses like us this year has been a lesson in diversity and if we look at the positives we made it through 2020 stronger and with entrepreneurialism We have also seen new businesses open during this time and historically those who open during a tough time in the economy thrive as they understand the hard times Anyway that s enough of being heavy I look forward to landing on your door step at the end of January with our first edition of 2021 and whatever your plans end up being for Christmas and the New Year I wish you love and peace and please stay safe Katy Merry Christmas Happy New Year from The Villages Mag xxx 4

Moon magic W hen the moon is full it feels powerful She hypnotically shines brightly in the black night sky surrounded by twinkling stars I started writing a journal last autumn I didn t write everyday and sometimes it was simply bold capital letters of frustration on a page But it helped When lockdown happened I took to writing daily It was my comfort and my journal was my counsellor As the days turned to weeks and months I started to look back through the pages Casually flicking through the days on the page I could see a pattern in my emotions I could see it and feel it in the words I wrote I noticed there would be a week where my sleep was disrupted by vivid dreams or I would struggle to fall asleep and my energy low Other weeks my energy levels were sky high and I felt the positivity in my words and the actions I had planned One morning after another troubled night s sleep I was idly scrolling through Pinterest when I saw a post that simply said Oh it s a full moon That s why Immediately I asked myself that s why what So I set about finding out what the why was and I can tell you now I ve never looked back If I told you that our emotions and energy are influenced by the moon would you believe me Consider this the moon s gravitational pull generates tidal force she creates high and low tides The moon s gravitational pull controls the tides Your body the human body is 60 water Therefore if the moon can control the tides surely she can affect our emotions and 8 energy The affects are expertly explained in a book called Lunar Living by Kirsty Gallagher The book teaches the moons cycles and how working with each cycle can help you live more purposefully Oh it s a full moon That s why From journalling and learning the moon cycles I recognised my sleep was disruptive in the lead up to the full moon As the moon grows so to does her energy giving you more energy The disruptive sleep is the moons way of saying This isn t the time for sleeping it s time for action Ok so that s my sleep patterns explained what about my emotions and energy During the waning phase as the moon slowly disappears so does her energy Lunar Living explains As the moon pulls on the tides of our emotions she helps us to see clearly which area of our lives need our attention or where we are most stuck If you feel stuck or frustrated look inwards for the answer This is a great time to journal if you don t know how to start you can research writing prompts Or simply do as I did and just write what s bothering you in bold capital letters Honestly you will feel better I wrote this article leading up to the full moon in October guess when I finished it Yep I received that energy boost from the full moon Lunar Living has allowed me to see clearly Like a light bulb moment a moon shaped light bulb shining brightly in the night sky And I can t wait to see where the light takes me Jody Woodbridge

Katy meets I n this edition we meet Cara Jasmine Bradley a local author living in Holmes Chapel whose passion for writing goes back to childhood Cara found escape from life within the art of writing children s fiction and produced her first novel at the age of seven Although Pipsqueak the Pixie never quite took off Cara never lost her ambition and passion for writing Her new book Skin Bones is her first young adult novel to be published I came up with the idea for Skin Bone while on the train to work last February and the characters and plot quickly formulated in my mind Had I not had a Christmas wedding to plan I feel I would have completed this work a lot sooner Combining themes of mental illness with friendship love travel music and complex family dynamics Skin Bone is a heart warming read telling the individual stories of outcast teenagers Jamie and Grace before their troubled paths cross and their tales intertwine Skin Bone was the hardest book to write but at the same time the most emotive and inspiring Walking in the shoes of my main character as she battles against anorexia was particularly difficult for me having suffered from the illness myself While contending with my own eating disorder I was disappointed to find a lack of fiction on the subject There were many non fiction books screaming the harrowing facts and figures from every page but these did not offer me the bolt hole I desired While it is imperative for there to be a range of informative guides on subjects like such I feel it is also equally as important for an escapism in fictitious work to be offered as an alternative I wanted to provide a different approach to break up the often overwhelming and startling real literature of formal guides Sometimes a few hours lost in a story is something we all crave and require as part of our therapy Skin Bone explores a multitude of complications that can present through a variation of mental illnesses Male suicide and depression was something I was keen to highlight given ongoing media 12 coverage I carried out extensive research on the various topics featured throughout and used my own past experiences with anorexia to promote a deeper understanding into the condition One aspect of eating disorders I was really keen to explain is the assumption that the illness is purely based around a desire to lose weight I hope Grace s story and the motives centred around her weight loss and suffering shed a new light on the often overlooked details and triggers of eating disorders I didn t want Skin Bone to be categorised entirely as a love story I have relished building the book up around Grace and Jamie s relationships on both sides of the spectrum within their families and friendship groups as well as around their very own blossoming attraction Watching my main characters develop in confidence as they embark upon their journeys into adulthood striving to leave the demons of their past behind was something I relished The Jamie and Grace seen at the end of the book are very different to the pair initially seen within the first half of the novel and it was a pleasure to capture and pen their growth Unexpected humour trails loosely throughout the book often when it is least expected as while I wanted to make the topics as realistic and raw as possible to of further education on the issues I also wanted a somewhat light hearted element to prevail Skin Bones by Cara Jasmine Bradley is available now from Amazon Katy

Merry Christmas W ell here we are if you re lucky enough to be reading this well done for nearly completing AD2020 I don t think I m alone in thinking the last 12 months or so have been some of the toughest we ve been through it has certainly been the toughest year of my life All of which means it s down to us to make this Christmas a blummin good one no matter whether we re spending it under lockdown or not Tears of joy please not Tiers of isolation It wouldn t be Christmas in our house without the smell of warming ginger spices so why not make some ginger syrup to add to your coffee be it a latte Irish Baileys or heaven forbid a Christmas Day espresso martini or 2 It s so easy to do you can easily tweak it to your taste You ll need 1 cup of water 1 cup golden castor sugar demarera for a more caramelly flavour a tablespoon of syrup honey treacle I like the smokiness treacle gives 2 3 cinnamon sticks a couple of inches of grated ginger the more you add the stronger it ll be 6 peppercorns couple of whole cloves optional couple of inches of orange peel watch out for the pith it only adds bitterness Lob it all in a saucepan put over a low heat stir until it comes to a simmer don t boil Remove from the heat cool strain bottle It ll keep in the fridge for a week or so If you re looking to cut down on the sugar swap it out for Stevia or any other sweetener in the ratio s advised on the packet If you want to make a gingerbread espresso martini here s my recipe 50ml double shot of espresso 50ml good vodka or dry London gin 25ml coffee liqueur 25ml ginger syrup Add to a shaker with a load of ice shake really well strain pour into a martini glass If you want to be extra indulgent rinse the shaker add a bit more ice a shot of cream Shake again strain pour gently over the top of the martini using the back of a spoon to keep it on the surface On a personal note I d just like to say a huge thank you to each everyone of you who s been into the Bottle Bank had a delivery bought a 16 gift box or voucher for friends or family We re not the only ones who ve been hit hard this year but with your support Hope her team will be able to keep opening the doors next year Hope s been adding lots of fabulous boozy gifts to our shelves from the brilliant iKegger dispense system that allows you to pour a perfect Bottle Bank quality pint at home to a new Ginvent Calendar with 24 different gins from around the world Keep an eye out for the launch of our brand new range of single origin coffee beans freshly roasted right here in Holmes Chapel We ve taken some of the best green beans in the world all with a 82 SCA rating double roasted them to bring out the very best flavours possible So pop in or call up if you want us to help make your Christmas wish list a bit easier to tick off I ll leave it here speak to you all in the New Year Stay safe be kind have a very Merry Christmas Rich The Beer Emporium

Grandma s kitchen W ith the season of spiced food and drink I though I would share something a little different This Lemon Tart is delicious with an afternoon cup of tea and for me brings back a little taste of summer Method Grease an 8inch loose bottomed cake tin Preheat the oven to 180 C 160 C fan gas mark 4 On a floured board roll out the pastry and use to line the cake tin You can make your own sweet pastry but I prefer to use ready made Spread the lemon curd on the base of the pastry In a mixing bowl add the softened butter and sugar and beat until pale and fluffy gradually add the beaten eggs and the lemon juice and using a whisk beat it well until you have a smooth batter mix Add the flour and ground almonds and gently fold in with a metal spoon Spread the mixture over the lemon curd and smooth it out Bake for 35 minutes and then reduce the oven temperature to 150 C 130 C fan gas mark 2 and bake for a further 10 15 minutes until the sponge springs back when lightly pressed Remove from the oven and leave in the tin to cool 20 Lemon Tart Packet of sw eet shortcrust pastry 4tbsp zesty le mon curd 4oz softened butter 4oz golden ca ster sugar 2 free range eggs beaten 3tsp lemon ju ice 3oz self raisin g flour sifted 1oz ground al monds

Festive thoughts W ell what a year it has been When I was writing my Christmas article this time last year I wouldn t have believed what 2020 would have in store for us I am writing this during our second lockdown of the year and the second time we have had to close our business and I can t tell you how much I miss seeing my clients and treating them with reflexology to help them with their health and wellbeing Normally for my Christmas article I am giving you all tips how to reduce your stress slow down and have a more relaxing Christmas This year although hoping for a bit of normality we aren t quite sure yet what Christmas will be like so this doesn t seem so appropriate This year I am going to recommend some alternative reads at Christmas to really get 2021 off to a good start with your heath and wellbeing and help reverse some of the stress that 2020 has left us with During lockdown I have revisited two amazing books by Dr Rangan Chatterjee one being The 4 Pillar Plan and the other The Stress Solution Dr Chatterjee is a GP who believes that by changing our lifestyle we can help alleviate or prevent many health problems to live healthier happier lives The four pillars are how to relax more eat healthier move better and improve our sleep He also discusses in both books something that I totally agree with and see with my own clients and that is the affect that stress can have on not just our mental health but also our physical health Some of these include affecting hormonal balance for example making menopausal symptoms worse affecting our immune system and also causing problems with our digestive system One of the great ideas he has to help relax more is a 36 digital detox where you cut down on using your smartphone and have a digital free day something we can all benefit from Another one I love is a gratitude journal Every night before you go to sleep write a list of all the things that have gone well in the day or you are grateful for During lockdown although really sad I couldn t see and treat my clients it helped to focus on things I was grateful for such as more family time a walk in the beautiful Goostrey countryside more time to garden and then after lockdown that my lovely clients could return along with lots of new clients looking to improve their health and wellbeing The stress solution also gives lots of ideas for how to release from your body One of them is to try reflexology as studies have shown that this gentle relaxing therapy can help reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol with many patients reporting back to Dr Chatterjee how it has helped lower their stress levels and improved their quality of sleep which is amazing So if you want to get 2021 off to a healthier start and want to reduce your stress why not give these books a try or think about trying some reflexology as part of your wellbeing plans So whatever the festive season is like this year I hope everyone has a happy healthy Christmas I am sure we will all be raising a glass to welcome in 2021 Karen Cheshire Clinical Reflexology

Lockdown stories T he Orchards Farm is situated down Twemlow Lane Holmes Chapel was originally owned by The Goodwin Family who back in the 50 s farmed it as a fruit farm hence the name It was then purchased by us The Brown family in 1961 alongside the fruit farming we had our pedigree Holstein Friesian herd known as The Bidlea Herd You may think how unusual the prefix is Bidlea how did we come about the name Clifford Brown farmed originally in Biddulph with his brother sisters When they came to move down to Cheshire they decided to split their herd up and because they farmed in the valley of Biddulph Hedley Brown formed the name The Bidval Herd Clifford Brown s herd was named The Bidlea Herd The family consists of Ray Jill their daughter Melanie Adam his wife Becky and our other son Ryan with his wife Becky their little girl Emmelia who is 10 months old We milk 300 pedigree cows you may have heard that we now pasteurise process our own milk It is something that Ray has wanted to do for a long time We feel very fortunate that all our family are involved with the business With forward planning for the future Ryan Becky Mel run the farm side of things organising the milking feeding and the crops plus grass management Adam and Becky do the pasteurising and processing of the milk We supply to 3 separate independent milk rounds men who deliver doorstep around the Goostrey Holmes Chapel Middlewich Sandbach surrounding areas I was saying before how things have changed because up till March this year we were selling milk from our farm in a small building It wasn t particularly busy but it worked well alongside selling Christmas trees back in December March was the turning point for us we occasionally have weddings at the farm and we held one on the Saturday the weekend before lockdown we had to move everything out of our little shop and take it over the road we thought as a temporary job but how wrong we were We have been so busy but feel very fortunate to be able to supply our milk We have a temporary shop selling our milk cream butter plus ice cream made from our cream but also local barn eggs potatoes and cheese This is only the start of our journey we have lots more ideas in the making Bidlea Dairy

Fitness L ockdown 2 0 much like life itself is what you make of it Let me explain During the last lockdown I saw a post on Facebook which read You ll either leave lockdown a hunk a chunk or a drunk These may not be words we would use professionally but there s a good level of truth in the statement Your daily actions directly determine your results and you have complete control over those actions For some that might be a bitter pill to swallow Life throws different challenges at each and every one of us and although some people are better equipped physically psychologically and financially to deal with those challenges we all have the ability to control our actions and responses We can use our lockdown experience as a fine example Whilst some fitness businesses were battening down the hatches and praying for better times we decided to use the additional time to develop the business by renovating JWC Holmes Chapel and opening JWC Sandbach People told us that we were mad to expand during a global pandemic but maintaining that growth mindset has meant that we are able to hit the ground running when things return to 56 normal Now that we ve experienced one lockdown and welcomed members back to JWC we ve seen the evidence behind the quote Some people used the additional time to get fitter whilst others saw it as an excuse to slip into bad habits The differing results of those mindsets were noticeably clear As we come out of the second lockdown it gives us another chance to re evaluate Have we made progress with our health and fitness have we regressed or have we maintained And importantly are we happy with where we are now Today I m not going to give you any technical advice I m simply going to ask you to be critical of where you are now and either pat yourself on the back for making progress or encourage you to make a plan for future progress We only get one life and it s crucial that we look after our health With every year that passes it becomes that little bit more difficult but equally more important Those who get fitter with every passing your and those who don t are separated by one thing Priorities Today make your health your priority Jack JWC Health Fitness

Our local heritage T he Spy the Red Lion and a Piece of Glass Who would have expected that Holmes Chapel might have been the venue mentioned in a spy story from the days of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the 1745 Jacobite revolt This may well be true Captain John Vere sometimes called Weir was a British intelligence officer According to one commentator he was the most notorious spy of his time Our story starts on 2 December 1745 when an advance party of Scots went forward at night towards Newcastle underLyme When they reached the Red Lion at Talke long since disappeared they found a group of British soldiers including John Vere Most of them escaped through windows but the Scots seized Vere who they knew to be a noted spy The initial thought was to execute him at once but instead he was tied behind a horse and taken barefoot to Congleton There he was interrogated by Prince Charles and Lord George Murray In order to save his life he exaggerated the size and position of the army sent to quell the rebellion under the Duke of Cumberland He told them that the British troops were in such numbers that the Jacobites stood no chance 60 of survival Lord George bluntly told the Prince that he and his army should return to Scotland which they did shortly afterwards Now the story is not too clear but there is a newspaper article in the Stamford Mercury of February 1746 which states that Vere escaped and had been seen at Holmes Chapel Though seen in Holmes Chapel it was maybe still as a prisoner not escapee as other reports say that he was taken to Carlisle by the Scots and subsequently released by the English after the fall of Carlisle Castle Did Vere and his captors stop a while at the Red Lion in Holmes Chapel at that time an important coaching inn If they did it might explain the pane of glass on a window on the first floor which has inscribed on it and preserve Prince Charles Amen I prey God perhaps left by his captors After his release Vere subsequently gave evidence in the treason trials that followed against Jacobite prisoners One Scottish commentator wrote This Vere was conducted back with us to Carlisle how unfortunate for us that he was not put to death considering what he has since done but his life was saved through the innate clemency of the Prince though he merited the worst punishments No one knows for sure how that pane of glass ended up in a window at the Red Lion but this is one possibility Holmes Chapel U3A Local History Group

Goostrey history J ohn Williams dips into Goostrey Parish Archive for festive style pictures and recalls a day when the village was cut off by snow Everyone of a certain age will remember the Great Sunday Snowstorm of the early eighties or was it the late seventies Anyway perhaps for the first time in centuries Goostrey stood still Not a car moved as snow topped the hedges bordering the narrow lanes approaching the village It all began with a few innocent flurries during the afternoon Three hours later it was a full blown blizzard whipped by the wind into a ferocious storm I got a call at the Daily Telegraph in Manchester from my wife concerned why I was not hot footing back to Cheshire but outside it was dark with no sign of an impending avalanche of snow Later as I drove home I still wondered what the fuss was about Wilmslow was clear then Alderley Edge but beyond Chelford I hit the snowline Not just any snow but heaps of it piling rapidly into drifts and blurring the windscreen By Terra Nova school the main road was blocked by a mountainous pile so high the police stopped vehicles from continuing even if they could have penetrated the mass Using 64 local knowledge I turned and found an escape route via Jodrell Bank Until I arrived at the old grain drier Here Blackden Lane a mile from the village was impassable The car abandoned I climbed the drift and walked level with the hedgerows coming across along the way a car wedged firmly in the snow The driver wound down his window as I peered to see if it was occupied Please can you direct me to the station he said I never did find out if he made the station or not although it was rumoured he found refuge nearby My own journey ended still amid swirling snow some minutes later I stumbled through the kitchen door to the wonderful smell of a Sunday roast thankful to be home if looking like the Abominable Snowman Joan was amazed I d made it back but I guess relieved I did warn you it was snowing she said Although the collection is not available currently to visitors because of the coronavirus pandemic the archive can be contacted via Roger Burgess on 01477 535443 or email at roger burgess67 icloud com Goostrey Archive

Amy s thoughts T oday I ve taken a trip to speak to Jonathan Myles Smith about his hair salon in Holmes Chapel The salon itself is very modern and stylish There is a friendly and casual atmosphere and luxury surroundings that feels special and calming straight away Jonathan has been in the hair dressing business in some way his whole life His dad owned a salon in Knutsford for thirty five years and his mum also worked as a hair dresser Being surrounded by creativity always drew Jonathan to enjoy more practical subjects at school however he was never pressured into the same career as his parents Jonathan s father passed away when he was fifteen which was the deciding factor that he wanted to follow in his footsteps and eventually own his own salon There s obviously an entrepreneurial gene as Jonathan Myles Smith is now a thriving business in the heart of our village It s almost a running joke in Holmes Chapel that every shop turns into a hair salon although there seems plenty of people to go around as everyone has been booked solid After a lot of lock down DIY cuts the hair dressers in the village have been busier than ever Jonathan explained that Holmes Chapel was the perfect choice for him he had built up a decent client base after working in a salon in Knutsford for 11 years When the space opened up he took the opportunity to make the leap and open his own salon Although we do have many hair dressers 68 in Holmes Chapel there is an ever expanding client base with new housing developments still being built and planned for the future Jonathan s favourite part of being a hair dresser is meeting and learning about his clients There is something very satisfying about meeting new people getting to know a little about them and having them leave happy I ve spoken to a few of Jonathan s customers and they all had something very similar to say they felt that he really listened to what they wanted and took the time to get the desired result I know from my own customer service experience how much job satisfaction you get from going above and beyond I m personally terrible at remembering to get my hair cut and it really is a treat going to the hair dressers and seeing the results 2020 has been an interesting year now more than ever we should take the time to look after ourselves and enjoy little treats Jonathan s recommendation for the colder months ahead is to go with a colour change and a nourishing treatment I ve never been very adventurous myself however after speaking to Jonathan and seeing how passionate he is I ve left wanting to book myself in for a brand new look I d like to thank Jonathan for taking time out of his very busy schedule to talk to me I love to hear people s motivations it helps us think about pursuing our dreams and doing what we love Although we have now entered another lock down I m sure Jonathan Myles Smith will reopen as busy as ever Amy x
