Student views T he importance of teamwork In life things often work better when we work together This could be to solve a problem support each other or as part of a sports team During the last term there were a number of occasions when we can together as a school to support each other to be the best that we could be The final Christmas assembly was a huge example of HCCS coming together to perform at our best The assembly used a range of departments performances and speeches to give the school a festive Christmas send off We had a range of dancers from the So you think you can dance competition showcasing their truly breathtaking dance ability The staff band sung us out with a sing along to Merry Christmas everyone The Youth Council discussed their achievements since being set up in April There was a poster competition ongoing work with the designing and implementation of a youth shelter in collaboration with the Holmes Chapel Partnership We have also successfully set up a Youth cinema in collaboration with the Holmes Chapel community cinema This has been highly successful and continues to grow in strength Furthermore we now have a Holmes Chapel 8 High Council This is a student body representing all year groups and houses to take key issues directly to leadership to ensure student voice is heard There is lots of work being done both in school and with the wider community into 2020 The final and possibly the most impressive example of teamwork was the legendary production of Grease Due to the scale and magnitude this production was set to be a grand occasion It absolutely did not fail to deliver We had a staff viewing a viewing aimed at our elderly and more socially isolated residents The organisation Bridge The Gap and our very own Alison Wright helped to ensure people were able to get here via minibus In addition 4 nights for anyone else who was lucky enough to buy tickets It s fair to say all involved came together harmoniously to deliver our best performance in recent years We are very proud of the way we come together to support our school community and ultimately the wider community The school has lots of teamwork planned between the school and its various groups it has involvement with in 2020 Watch this space Bella Mac Laura Henderson HC6FC

Can you help W hat s the link between Ohio USA and Goostrey Out of the blue at the end of 2019 FOGS committee member Mike Jarvis received an email from Erik Bittinger in Ohio USA The fame of Friends of Goostrey Station had spread further than we thought Erik attached photos of a British Railway sign for Goostrey station which is displayed in a Max and Erma s diner in Middleburg Heights He had traced FOGS via our website friendsofgoostreystation org Erik was unsure if the sign is an original or a replica sold for decorative purposes but he thought FOGS should know of its existence The head office of the restaurant chain do not know the origin of the sign Their employee Erica wrote We are not entirely sure how our Middleburg Heights location came about the sign you are referring to It was part of an opening decor package provided by an outside vendor This restaurant was opened back in 1999 by previous owners and my company Glacier Restaurant Group acquired it in January of 2016 Please get in touch if you can help FOGS solve this mystery If the sign Max and Erma s restaurant Middleburg Heights Ohio USA British Railway sign for Goostrey displayed 12 is an original we may decide to retrieve it for display in the newly renovated wooden station building To ensure that passengers continue to enjoy using Goostrey station our working parties take place on the second Sunday of each month starting at 10am New volunteers are always welcome FOGS members are also involved in planning the future use of the Victorian ticket office the installation of cycle racks in the car park and the improvement of passenger safety on the bridge For more information please contact Craig Sidebotham chair on 01477 544111 or Dave Roberts vice chair on sharp shooter talktalk net Friends of Goostrey Station

State of mind A very Happy New Year to you all And talking of the New Year have you noticed how we are bombarded at this time of the year with the prospect of New Year s Resolutions Are you already bored of the almost constant resolution talk on TV Is the conversation at work all about trying to give something up and how tough it is Whether it be losing weight stopping smoking exercising more or something more unique we have all been guilty of such great plans on 31st December then a couple of weeks into the New Year our new regime is proving much harder to put into practice much harder than the fighting talk we had before we actually tried to get going So if you like millions of others have started 2020 with the aim of making a change how can you set yourself up to succeed rather than it all being a distant memory come February First of all you have to really want to make a change It may sound very obvious but it is one of the first things I always ask my clients in order to succeed you have to know exactly why you want this so much 16 Then you also need to have a very clear idea of where you want to be and what the benefits will be For example if your 2020 goal is to lose a few pounds you have to really see yourself feeling fitter and healthier or even visualise yourself in that outfit Remind yourself of that goal frequently perhaps even use pictures or words on paper as a clear reminder Next you have to break that one big goal into smaller goals So using the same example if you actually want to lose three stone this year rather than think about how hard it ll be to lose a full three stone break it down into a weekly goal of two pounds or fitting into that jumper that s just slightly too tight think small steps rather than one big mountain to climb If it all feels too big a mountain to climb you are more likely to give up Then when you reach each mini goal reward yourself remember to congratulate yourself before you move on to the next mini goal Try it if you have a resolution this year and make 2020 the year you crack it for good Karen Ingledew Therapy

Health T he New Year sees many of pledging to have a healthier lifestyle and improve our diet It also sees National Sugar Awareness Week As a nation we certainly have a sweet tooth and who doesn t love a cake or a bar of chocolate but this is definitely one area where you can have too much of a good thing So what is the problem with too much sugar Well it can cause tooth decay and can contribute to us putting on weight In turn obesity can lead to other heath conditions such as type 2 diabetes The type of sugar that most adults and children in the UK eat too much of are free sugars These are any sugars added to foods or drinks such as fizzy drinks biscuits chocolate and breakfast cereals They also occur as sugars in honey syrups eg maple and unsweetened fruit juices and smoothies In this case the sugars are naturally occurring but do still count as free sugars so we still need to be careful how much we consume Sugar found naturally in milk fruit and vegetables does not count as free sugars The UK government recommend that free sugars should make up no more than 5 of our daily calorie intake This means Adults should have no more than 30g daily roughly 7 sugar cubes Children aged 7 to 10 should have no more than 24g daily roughly 6 sugar cubes Children aged 4 to 6 should have no more than 19g daily roughly 5 sugar cubes There are no guidelines for children under 4 but it s recommended to avoid food and drink with sugar added to it One can of cola can have as much as 9 cubes of sugar so higher than the 26 recommended daily intake for an adult Tips to reduce sugar in your diet Switch high sugar fizzy drinks to water or milk Limit the volume of fruit juice or smoothies you have to no more than 150ml per day If you prefer a fizzy drink try sparkling water or dilute low sugar squash with the sparkling water If you take sugar in hot drinks or cereal start to reduce and stop this Check the nutrition labels on food and choose lower sugar versions Be aware that other words can be used to describe sugar eg high fructose corn syrup fruit juice concentrate puree nectars dextrose etc Try reducing sugar in some recipes you cook Choose unsweetened wholegrain breakfast cereals rather than sugary and chocolate ones Rather than high sugar spreads such as jam on your bread try low sugar alternatives such as cream cheese or sliced banana Try using the Be Food Smart app on your phone This can scan a barcode to tell you how much sugar is in it Wishing you all a Healthy Happy 2020 Karen Cheshire Clinical Reflexology

Parish Council news T his month we are delighted to introduce you to our newest Councillor Cllr Chris Jackson Cllr Jackson was co opted onto the Parish Council at a meeting of the Full Council on 11th December 2019 Cllr Jackson says I am a Chartered Civil Engineer now retired and moved to Holmes Chapel with work in 1986 along with my wife Janet and three sons I quickly came to appreciate the village in carrying out my work throughout the NorthWest and Midlands because of its good road and then national Business Development Director for Highways The great majority of my career has been in transport infrastructure Outside the day job I have been active in my professional bodies The Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation CIHT and the Institution of Civil Engineers ICE This included Regional Chair of CIHT and National President in 2009 I was also a school governor for 25 years My ongoing interests in transport issues led me to join the Parish Council s Traffic and Transport Working Group and subsequent application to join the Council While traffic issues coupled with the desire for improved pedestrian and cycling provision are significant interests I believe it is essential that the village s amenities must be brought into line with the growth in housing and population I welcome the opportunity to contribute to the work of the Parish Council in making Holmes Chapel a great place to live and work for all our residents 2020 21 Budget Cllr Chris Jackson rail connections At the same time Janet was fortunate to gain a job teaching at Middlewich Road Primary School where she taught for 23 years until retirement As a civil engineering contractor I have been responsible as Project Manager on NW schemes including Barton Bridge Widening on M60 and the new Second Runway at Manchester Airport I was Head of Community and Public Relations on the construction of the M6Toll motorway and 30 At the meeting of the Council on 9th January 2020 it was resolved that there would be no increase to the precept for 2020 21 It was agreed that whilst in recent years there has been a steady increase in the precept to allow the Council to deliver the local services and Village improvements expected this year would differ in respect of the growth of the Village on all sides in recent months The amount per property therefore remains at 82 41 per annum for a band D property raising a total precept for the Council of 233 150 00 We are looking to fund a range of projects next year which include a fresh

Our local heritage H olmes Chapel before the M6 The Staffordshire to Preston section of the M6 through Cheshire opened in November 1963 Before then London Rd the A50 was the main north route to Scotland west of the Pennines This meant that all the trunk road traffic had to pass through Holmes Chapel and squeeze past the church It was great entertainment for the children on hearing a heavy load coming through the village to dash towards the Square to watch the load being inched around the church The building now occupied by Latham Estates has scars in the brickwork as evidence of these struggles In those years if the firemen were needed for an emergency call the siren would sound out long and loud This also alerted the children to dash into the village this time to catch the fire engine as it turned into London Rd with its bell clanging The village pre M6 was of a cosy size There was the original village centre with ribbon development along the main roads and from about 1950 onwards there were three areas of council housing Rees Crescent Northway and Westway Most of the young children in the village at that time attended the County Primary School on Macclesfield Rd now the Catholic Church Those living west of the A50 had to be shepherded across the centre of the village at the traffic lights by the lollipop lady For many years this service was provided 38 morning and afternoon by Mrs Buckley On their way to school the children could stop to buy sweets either at Rose s up the steps next to the Co op or at Mrs Dale s on Macclesfield Rd We weren t so careful of our teeth in those days For those on the wrong side of the village getting to Sunday School could be a challenge in the autumn This was the season of Blackpool Lights and the way across the road into church would be blocked by coaches heading for Blackpool queuing at the traffic lights The 1950s were the years of the 11 plus exam so after being together through their primary years the children would leave Holmes Chapel in many different directions on their way to senior school each morning to Middlewich to Sandbach for the Boys Grammar and to Congleton for the Girls Grammar School For some children this would mean crossing London Rd to catch the school bus without the help of the lollipop lady The coach for Congleton picked up the girls on Station Rd so for girls living west of the A 50 this might mean negotiating first Chester Road which didn t have a footpath and then the lorries on the A50 at the junction between Chester Rd and Station Rd This was always a challenge even when the traffic was stationary right through the village which often happened The M6 relieved some of these difficulties Holmes Chapel U3A Local History Group

Fitness T he Future of Fitness and importantly where you should be investing your time money and trust Where is the fitness industry going in 2020 and beyond and are we set to see big changes in how and where people seek support with their fitness goals There are many different gym models as well as online coaching in app support and even get ready for this artificial intelligence Yes we are talking about robots For decades commercial gyms dominated the fitness industry offering a wide range of facilities including a vast array of gym equipment a multitude of fitness classes pools and spas They appealed to the masses with their one size fits all approach But in my 13 years service to the fitness industry I ve noticed a shift in popular gym models The popularity seems to have split in two very separate directions budget gyms and independent boutique gyms On the one hand you ve got lowcost budget gyms which offer up to date equipment long often 24 hour opening hours and minimal staff interaction They allow flexibility and low cost which in today s fast paced society can be just the ticket fantastic for those who possess a good level of motivation and knowledge around exercise Where these models miss out however is in offering the support of a real person With this comes poor member retention and in turn a large number of sleeping members who pay month after month and rarely visit This explains why these gyms quickly became a breeding ground for freelance personal trainers In order to seek support members had little choice but to invest in a personal trainer in order to be given some direction 42 I believe that out of this was born the independent and boutique gyms who s values are heavily focused on customer service and support a breath of fresh air for those who lack confidence in their fitness and want to be guided through a journey These models just like JWC were set up by those same personal trainers who had been previously coaching out of a commercial gym but who spotted a floor and dared to try something different Since 2010 independent fitness studios have been increasing in numbers to the tune of 450 per year a clear sign of the demand Then we have the advancement in technology allowing for online coaching via skype or similar pre programmed in app training Again these have their place in the fitness industry allowing people to exercise in the comfort of their home or even when on holidays or working away Just like budget gyms they work for people who already possess the motivation but with little to no accountability those prone to low motivation can simply ignore the device and fall back in to their old ways I m not sure I m ready to give this last option too much credibility just yet but artificial intelligence is being tested in the gym environment Can robots r e a l l y replace personal trainers Let s review this in 2021 Jack JWC Health Fitness

Safer motoring S top demonising older drivers says IAM RoadSmart driving into old age is good for staying independent and active IAM RoadSmart is calling for an urgent debate on the best way to keep drivers safely behind the wheel into old age in light of government figures that predict a four fold increase in the number of drivers over 75 in the next 25 years The UK s leading road safety charity has been warning about the demographic time bomb and challenging the demonising of older drivers by the media and public for a number of years And with latest figures showing there are now 2 5 million licence holders over 75 driving on UK roads IAM RoadSmart is calling for clear and practical actions to help older people stay safe behind the wheel for as long as possible The charity believes encouraging more older people to stay driving safely on the road makes a vital contribution towards keeping them healthy active and independent A Swansea University study in 2016 alongside the DVLA s own statistics highlighted that drivers over 70 are four times less likely to be involved in a road traffic incident than those aged 17 to 24 The charity goes on to state that older drivers are safe for several reasons They have many years of driving experience which can compensate for less rapid reflexes They are much more cautious drivers and so less prone to taking risks Most self regulate by not driving at times and in places they do not feel comfortable for example when the weather is bad when traffic is heavy or in areas that are unfamiliar Few older drivers drink and drive or take 54 illegal drugs and most don t speed IAM RoadSmart also highlights a number of other policy improvements required to support the country s increasing numbers of older drivers Better information is needed to allow older drivers and their families to continue to drive safely and ultimately to make the informed decision to give up when the time is right New online assessment tools have a key role to play in providing information and as a first step in the assessment process Awareness and uptake of voluntary driving reviews should be encouraged to equip older drivers with an independent assessment of their continuing capability and support them in their decision as to whether they remain safe behind the wheel Increase acknowledgement of the key role that driving plays in promoting independent living mental and physical health and in cost savings for society as a whole As a nation we need to accept that older drivers are here to stay and stop making assumptions of the kind we often see in the media and public opinion where older drivers are demonised and openly criticised We need to develop meaningful and practical solutions that help them stay independent and driving for as long as they are safe to do so Many of the tools to do this are already in place we just need to make sure people know about them and feel comfortable using them IAM RoadSmart provides Mature Driver Reviews for any older driver who wants to ensure their confidence behind the wheel is well matched to their safety on the roads IAM RoadSmart Congleton and Macclesfield
