There has been a stone bridge at this location for at least 700 years and probably longer, for the “Great Road to the North” from London to Warrington and over the Mersey was an important military road and trade route for coaches, wagons and drovers. The road was eventually turnpiked, with traffic regulated and tolls collected at turnpike gates along the way, all now gone. The bridge was widened by Cheshire County Council in 1935 though care was taken to rebuild the existing masonry arch and stone parapets. The next bridge upstream, to the east of Cranage, is Hermitage Bridge, dated 1707. Leading to the ancient mansion recently renamed Hermitage Hall, the bridge was built by a previous owner of the estate, Thomas Hall the ironmaster. He owned Cranage Mill and forge and gave generously to St Luke’s Church and other public works. The stone bridge no doubt replaced an earlier wooden structure.Continuing eastwards, the Dane is next crossed by the magnificent brick railway viaduct, completed by the Manchester and Birmingham Railway Company in 1841. The broad, marshy valley presented a huge challenge to G.W.Buck, the Company Engineer and the contractors and navvies who built the 23 arches. The navvies lived in accommodation in the village of Holmes Chapel and in a temporary encampment at the foot of the viaduct during the two years of construction, as recorded in the Census of 1841.Close by the viaduct is Saltersford Bridge, the name providing evidence of the importance of the old salters’ ways along which pack animals would carry precious loads of salt produced from the mid Cheshire brine pans to distant places where it was used in tanning and preserving food. There was a shallow ford at this point in Roman times, and the first record of a stone bridge dates from 1331. Bridge tolls were collected to cover the costs, and eventually the road to Chelford over the bridge was turnpiked. There is still an old toll house by the road on the north side of the river.Downstream from Cranage Bridge, going west, the next bridge is the massive construction of the early 1960s which carries the M6 over the river. There was once another bridge about half way between the two called Sparrow Bill Bridge, part of the carriage drive to Cranage Hall from Middlewich Road. This was in regular use until 1929 when the hospital took over the Cranage Estate and it fell into disuse. There are a few indications of its existence still visible on old maps and on the ground, in the form of a footpath leading from Bramhall Drive to Dane Meadow.Holmes Chapel U3A Local History Group

14Days Out & Meals Out reviews...ON New year’s day we joined the many people who headed out for a nice family walk to get some fresh air. We headed to White Nancy which is a walk we have never done before. White Nancy is a structure at the top of Kerridge Hill, overlooking Bollington, Cheshire. Since 1966 it has been recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. We researched a little online before hand for the route and also where to park. We parked on Lord Street in Bollington, SK10 5BN. Here you will find free street parking and the perfect spot to start your walk. Head west along Lord Street for 0.2 km and turn left onto Cow Lane. Cross over the street and look to your right for a trail heading to the south along a line of trees. The White Nancy Circular Walk is 5.3km if you choose to do the longest loop and takes 1.5-2 hours to complete. It is a fairly easy trail overall but there are a few steep sections along the route that could limit mobility for some walkers and when the weather has been wet the paths can get muddy and slippery especially on the steep, grassy parts. The steep northern slope of Kerridge Hill has been made easier to ascend as it has a series of steps up the hillside; however, these will get your heart racing and definitely give you a workout. But it’s all worth it when you reach the top where you will find White Nancy itself. Once at the top you will be able to explore the area around the monument while taking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding Cheshire landscape. Our girls liked how White Nancy was sat upon a giant compass showing which direction was which and after a few photos we set off again to carry on along the circular trail. Walking past White Nancy and heading south you walk along the ridge. There are a couple of places where you can take a left turning to make the circular route shorter or longer. We took the first left turn which is at the first junction you come to after about 0.6km. This takes you down a steep grassy feild where you will meet the bottom path. This path runs along the river Dean and parallel to the ridge walk you have just done. Follow this path heading back toward White Nancy where you will eventually come to a bridge crossing the river Dean where you will find the cascading Waulkmill Waterfall. Keep straight along Ingersley Vale for 0.8 km, as it takes you back into the town and you will arrive back at Lord Street where you parked. This is a great walk what ever the weather. In the summer it would be perfect to sit and have a picnic next to White Nancy. But Januarys wet weather also made our muddy walk much more interesting and more of a challenge. Jenny, Days Out and Meals Out Reviews

182022 proved a busy but rewarding time for Debbie Goldsmith and she’s planning for an equally successful 2023. During January she is meeting people from Community Rail and Crewe Heritage Centre to plan more creative workshops. If you’re interested in bringing a group to Goostrey Art Studio, please contact Debbie on deborahgoldsmith@me.com. If you want to see some of Debbie’s artwork, why not pop into the cafe at Bidlea Dairy just outside Goostrey? Debbie is displaying her own paintings and also work by Sue Roberts and Susan McCall. Meanwhile Debbie is working with FoGS members to make full use of the new noticeboard at the entrance to platform one. She’s collecting information to publicise the work of FoGS and Goostrey Art Studio more effectively.FoGS always welcome new members. For more information, there’s plenty to read on our website. 22Pain free feet!OUR feet carry us through life. They are one of the most hard working yet least appreciated parts of our body. If your New Year’s resolution is to live a healthier lifestyle, why not set an intention to show your feet some love and attention?Find 10-minutes each day to focus on your feet with the following foot care rituals. You will need: A cleansing foot spray or foot bath, a foot cream, a nail file.Skin & nail care1. Cleanse the feet paying particular attention to the area between the toes. Dry carefully with a soft towel.2. Gently file the nails to smooth any sharp edges and prevent the nails snagging socks or irritating skin.3. Apply a foot cream and massage the feet. Apply circular pressure with thumbs to the arch and stretch toes backwards and forward to relieve tension in the top and bottom of the feet. Moisturising the skin daily improves the barrier function to prevent bacterial and fungal infection.Mindful balance & foot strength1. Stand with feet hip width apart, bring focussed attention to the soles of your feet. Slowly & gently move your weight back to the heels & forward to the balls of the feet and rock side to side. Notice the changes in sensation in your feet and legs.2. Stand with feet flat, lift the toes and spread them out as much as possible then lay them back down. Repeat several times.3. Shift your balance slowly from one leg to the other, standing on alternate legs, feeling the body sensations as you do this. To make this more challenging, try the exercise with your eyes closed. Repeat several times.4. Bend knees into a gentle squat and raise the heels, shifting weight onto the ball of the foot, pressing toes into the ground. Straighten the legs to stand on tiptoes, then slowly move the heels back to the floor. This can be done in reverse by standing and lifting the heels, bending knees, moving heels back down to the floor and straightening back to standing.Daily self-care combined with comfortable, well-fitting footwear will help prevent foot problems. If you have persistent foot pain, it’s important to visit a Podiatrist. Anna & Andrew AyresAyres Health

26Let’s talk legal...THE private client solicitors at Evolve Family Law warn it could be a huge burden on you and your family if your relatives do not put their legal affairs in order and subsequently lose the capacity to make their own decisions for age or health-related reasons.A WillYour relative may have made a Will but is it up to date? Wills should be reviewed and updated with a fresh Will or codicil. These steps need to be carried out before there are concerns about a relative’s health as you do not want your relative’s capacity to make a Will or a codicil to be challenged by a beneficiary or family member who feels they have ‘lost out’ by the creation of a new Will or codicil.A solicitor checks that the person making or changing their Will has the legal capacity to do so. This minimises the risk of the Will being challenged by addressing any capacity concerns. Evolve Family Law have seen claims (which – even if unsuccessful – cause massive stress and disruption) where the testator was not completely well when they signed their Will, or where they relied on one of their beneficiaries to contact us. The only way of completely avoiding claims is for your elder relative to act before they are too reliant on you.Lasting Powers of AttorneyIf your relative is struggling to manage day-to-day life and financial affairs and they want you to step in to help them then they need to sign a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) to give you legal authority to do so.An LPA covers property and financial decisions or health and welfare. There is no requirement to have both types of LPA, but it is advisable to have both.An LPA can only be signed when the person creating the LPA is capable of making their own decisions. If capacity is lost an application can be made to the Court of Protection for a deputy to be appointed to make decisions on a relative’s behalf. This is more expensive and difficult than the creation of an LPA.Your relative can make an LPA when they are not completely well, or when they are already relying on you to a certain extent, as their solicitor will check that the person making the LPA has legal capacity. As capacity can be challenged it is better to make an LPA when a relative is completely healthy and independent so their affairs are put to help the next generation of their family. 36 One small way Silk & Stone can help, is advise you in re-generating your home interiors, or if you arebrave and have funds available, go for it, a total revamp. Give your home the readjustment that makesyou feel so content when you enter your private domain of security. To assist you in this possible adventure, perhaps we can advise and encourage you with trends, as wellas a timeless style for this New Year. One trend making an impact on the interior design market is maximalism. A fabulous madness ofglorious colour and themes, but hold on ……. there is also a total contradiction in colours, with all thepopular brightness of tones being reinvented, they are also being softened. However, buzz of furnishingstyles is still confidently sitting next to one another. No longer do things have to all perfectly match, or in neatly ordered sets, there is more personalityfrom items with a heart that have had previous lives of their own or a character of personal purchase. Be clever with being playful without being childish and mixing colours with a blend of enthusiasm. Design with a touch of nostalgia in mind, with perhaps a few well-placed family heirlooms or antiquesclose to a modernistic piece thus incorporating meaningful pieces into the home. Some Designers fromNorthern Europe feel the word contemporary is an old fashioned description to a design style. For this time of year an organic warmth, weather a strong colour of plum and mustard to a soft hue ofgreen and even the 70s peach – now called soft rust!!! Is the way to go. Another idea pinched from the villas of France and Italy is paint close tones on the skirting, architraves, doors and if brave ceilings, and a real ‘bump’ in the `British’ thinking is wallpaper the ceiling, continuing with the same on feature walls!! A classic return is coving, with a mould that marries well with the height of the ceiling, size of the room. You may require professional advice on mood boards and space planning, so employ an `InteriorDesigner’ they are not an elitist wish as a few years ago. A designer can be affordable and confidentlyassist you to avoid costly mistakes. I think Interior Designers should gently push your boundaries butlisten carefully to your desires for your home, eventually producing a look far beyond yourexpectations. Whether a two up, two down or a 7 bedroomed mansion. Silk & Stone will work with in aclient’s individual budget, tailored to their requirements. Interior Trends 2023We are in 2023, can you believe it? it even feels a futuristicnumber! 38WELCOME to 2023 dear reader, and as I sit here writing this with a hot brew, the rain and wind blowing against the windows, the fun of the Christmas holidays feels an awful lot further away than the 2 weeks it’s been!January, after October, is my second least liked month. No prizes for guessing why… I think I’m going to campaign for a choc-free January next time! It’s a time of the year that the hospitality trade usually takes a deep breath, pauses and resets itself for the rest of the year. We’ve already done a bit of sprucing up of both bars, fettling a few things here and there so that we’re all ship shape and Bristol fashion as we begin to head through the rest of the year. This time however, it all feels a little different. There’s a sombre mood in the pubs and brewing world, and, unless you’ve been completely ignoring the news for the past year or so, you’ll know what that is. At the last count, I know of nearly 70 independent breweries that have closed in the last 12 months. In the 48hrs before I wrote this article, at least 2 independent bottle-shops that I know, announced they will close. One of which, a nationally renowned online seller of some of the best beers in the world, sent shockwaves through the craft beer world - the unspoken question “if they couldn’t make it work…?”.This story is no different to many other retailers and small businesses in other sectors. Just like the swaying branches of the trees outside right now, we are all in for a bit of a wild ride these next couple of years. Those who will come out the other side of this will have innovated and adapted. They will have given excellent customer service time after time, priding themselves on their products, knowing what their customers want. They will have had the support of their community, be they selling clothing or cheese, beer or burgers, and I reckon our community is one of the best there is.Until next time, keep smiling.Rich, The Beer Emporium Bottle BankFrom the bar, by Rich

46I’M writing this at the start of January, when the general news throughout the land at the beginning of 2023, sadly, has not exactly been all sweetness and light. The NHS is under immense pressures, some of which, still, are legacies from covid and the enormous strain that put on resources. Our own GP surgery has not been immune to these pressures, just as everywhere else. Patient care requirement at times has far exceeded the capacity of the team at the Health Centre. Some of this is because of resource issues at AandE and other hospital departments, some from a perfect storm of seasonal flu and Covid-related illnesses throughout November, December and January. Indeed, the doctors on London Road have noticed patients have been far more likely to go straight to see their own GP rather than other health care providers because they know the extra services provided by HC Health Centre mean they’re more likely to get their issues resolved. Which is a good thing I guess! The end of the year also saw a couple of GP doctors leave the practise through retirement and career progression. Thankfully, the recruitment drive undertaken by the management team, along with the reputation of the practise being seen as a good place to work, has resulted in several new NHS professionals coming on board. 56HC Partnership news...Santa’s Sleigh Outings 2022DID you see Santa out and about on his newly rebuilt Sleigh? Did you come to the door and make a contribution to the local organisations who will benefit from his trips out? If so, thank you!Holmes Chapel Partnership would also like to thank Will Burnham and his Shed Crew for their invaluable skill and time in rebuilding the Sleigh – the previous version lasted 30 years, so we hope this will do the same!December weather is rarely good and this December was frosty and inhospitable in the early evenings when the Sleigh was due out. The groups who ventured out into the cold to bring the sleigh to your doorstep are:• Holmes Chapel Scouts• Holmes Chapel Guides• Goostrey Scouts• Brereton Scouts• Viking Explorer Scout Unit• Dane Sound Community Radio• Holmes Chapel Primary PTA• Holmes Chapel Community Pre-School• Bridge the Gap• 41 Club/Ladies Tangent• Holmes Chapel PartnershipBetween them they collected a grand total of £4149. There were deductions for costs and the remaining total has been divided by 13, which was the number of evenings that the Sleigh was on the road. Each evening’s outing earned its organisation £285. Although the Partnership took the Sleigh out one evening it did not take any share itselfWe will be holding a photo shoot at 10am on Saturday 18th February, at the Sensory Garden next to the Fire Station, where we hope to hand over to a representative from each group a cheque for the amount they earned from the Sleigh outings.Would you like to raise funds in this way for your organisation in December 2023? Do you have any feedback for us? Are you happy to donate cash or would you prefer to be able to use a card to donate money?Do get in touch with Holmes Chapel Partnership: info@hcpartnership.org.ukHolmes Chapel Partnershipwww.hcpartnership.orgFB @HolmesChapelPartnership

64Technology... What’s New?YOU may be wondering what happened to BBC News HD. No? Well, you are now! If you receive TV through a terrestrial aerial (Freeview or YouView), several HD channels disappeared at the end of June, including BBC4 and CBeebies, plus a bunch of SD channels. A temporary transmitter was turned off as planned, its frequency to be used for mobile phones. It is a late straggler from the big retune that concluded in summer 2020. The BBC’s plan had been to transfer those channels to a different transmitter, but things weren’t ready in time. So they went off air. The other channels either moved, turned to streaming or closed permanently. On 6 September, BBC4 and CBeebies HD reappeared on channels 106 and 205, but things had changed since the plans were made. BBC3 (SD and HD) had returned in February after going online-only in 2016. Now there wasn’t enough bandwidth for all the BBC channels, and they decided to axe BBC News HD. It’s still in SD on 231, but if you want decent picture quality, you need to turn to iPlayer or satellite (Freesat or Sky). Now that most tellies do UHD (also called 4K), SD is an anachronism. But it’s not all bad news. The Beeb has finally modernised their playout arrangements for BBC1 HD so that we no longer have to retune when the local news comes on.So how have we got into this situation? Bandwidth has always been limited on terrestrial television compared to satellite, and the problem is compounded by so many channels simulcasting in both SD and HD. By now, we should have converted most of those ‘SD’ transmitters’ to ‘HD’ ones because they have a much higher capacity, and the big retune would have been the perfect time to do it. At a time when there were still a lot of TVs incapable of receiving HD, that made sense. Today, it does not, and the whole shambles smacks of a lack of foresight. Given the high cost of conversion – the government contributed £500m towards the retune – and the fact that we are moving to streaming instead (the BBC already refers to transmitting as ‘legacy’), it won’t ever happen. Indeed, it is now planned that CBBC and BBC4 will go online in a couple of years, in response to the government’s starving the Beeb of funds. BBC News and World News are also to merge. Coming on top of the cutting of the News App for televisions in November 2020, we have to wonder whether news is high enough up the BBC’s agenda..Andrew, goggleboxtech.uk
