The 19th is Mothering Sunday, traditionally, it was a day when children, mainly daughters, who had gone to work as domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother and family. In the UK the day began as a church tradition, taking place three weeks before Easter on the fourth Sunday of lent. In other countries like the US, the day wasn’t based on religious tradition and is specifically referred to as Mother’s Day. It became an official US holiday in 1914 when then-President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as a day of ‘public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.’In our house my husband will only get a card with ‘Mothering Sunday’ for his mam (he's Welsh) on it, this is often a difficult task as most cards have ‘Mum’ on the front and over the years we have spent hours in card shops looking for the right one, obviously with the internet it is a lot easier now. Whatever your plans I hope you have a lovely day, and I will be thinking of those who have lost their mums, as I imagine it can be a difficult time.March is always an optimistic month for me, as the trees start chaining and the days start to get longer, it is also a great month to start thinking about those jobs in the house. We have lots of great businesses who can help make your dreams a reality, whether it is a new bathroom or kitchen, garden make over or some fresh flooring, there is someone in the Go Local who can assist, if you could tell them where you found them, we would be grateful.

8Holmes Chapel Hurricanes...YOUR community, grassroots football club. We’d like to take this opportunity to introduce you to your local football club, Holmes Chapel Hurricanes. Founded in 2000 with one team and one manager, the Club looks very different today and it may surprise some of you to know just how big the organisation now is and what an amazing service it provides to the youth and adults of the village, 100% thanks to the volunteers who run it week in, week out.The Committee, now 10 strong, look after the strategic direction of the Club, as well as the running of it day-to-day; finances, managing volunteers, working with the various leagues in which our teams play and maintaining relationships with pitch owners in the local area being some of the roles that take up their time. But the beating heart of the Club is the 115+ volunteers who give up their time to ensure 650+ youth players, between the age of 7 and 18, get to play football every weekend and train at least once per week. As a Club, we recently looked at assigning a value to the hours it takes to run a club such as this every year – it shocked us to realise that every year, assuming minimum wage, there is approx. £350,000 worth of hours given by the volunteers that run the Club! The values of the Club run through everything we do; building confidence by developing potential and skills and ensuring enjoyment for all. We aim to achieve excellence in all areas and our reputation amongst the regional leagues in which we play is excellent, we are a Club that takes the FA Respect agenda and the welfare of our volunteers and players seriously. We are also a Club that doesn’t stand still – we are ambitious and have some big plans for the coming years, having been successfully accepted onto an FA mentoring programme to get the Club ‘Investment Ready’. The future is exciting, and we will keep you updated when we have news to share but we hope that this introduction goes someway to putting Hurricanes on the map in the village and maybe encourages the levels of community support we will be needing to bring the Club’s dreams to fruition – always with our mission at heart, ‘Holmes Chapel Hurricanes Football Club creates a safe, welcoming and nurturing environment for people of all ages to participate, develop and reach their full potential, providing mental and physical health benefits to all.’If you want to find out more about the Hurricanes or ask about the kind of support we might need from our local community, please contact Ian Wilkes on hchsoccerschool@btinternet.com Ruth Nelson, Hurricanes Communications Manager

16Katy meets... Bach 95IMAGINE if there was a lager that was low calorie, tasted great and the company producing it was local and happened to be professional rugby players… You might think you have stepped into a parallel universe where everything is nearly perfect. Well, you haven’t, the lager does exist, and it is called Bach 95.I met up with one of the owners, Tom Holmes, in his office above Stephenson Browne in Sandbach town centre for an interview for our podcast series. Tom is very tall and needed to be as Second Row for many clubs, including Sale Sharks. He has now retired, but one of his business partners, Will Cliff, is still on the team, and his other partner,Jesse Coulson, is an ex-international player. Tom is Sandbach born and bred, he went to the boys’ school and started playing rugby from an early age. He then progressed to playing professionally, although like many players he has been hit with injuries over the years. He is now resting his knees and divides his time between coaching and working full time within the business. The beer came about at a BBQ one sunny afternoon. Will and Tom were discussing the issues around weight gain when you are a professional sportsperson and how they had to balance this with enjoying a relaxing beer at the weekend. The answer came at them like a power play: design a beer that tastes great and is low in calories! The aim was to make it less than 95 calories, hence the name ‘Bach’ as in Sandbach, and 95. The 9 and 5 also have a rugby connection as 9 was Jesse’s shirt number and 5 was Tom’s.The idea quickly grew into a reality as they did their research and worked with a brewer to find the perfect recipe. Tom describes brewers as magical scientists as they found a way to keep a fantastic taste, using the same recipes as well known lagers, but by using some extra heat they can reduce the sugar. The final result is a vegan, gluten-free lager with a 4.2% ABV.Since launching the beer, the feedback has been phenomenal, nationally and locally, with many of the bars and restaurants in Sandbach stocking the drink. The key question was would the consumer like it? The answer comes in the way of repeat customers, as so far the bars have been reordering due to demand, and as a result the team now produce the beer in kegs as well as cans. They also offer a subscription service directly through their website so you can enjoy the product at home. I ask Tom what the future plans are. He tells me they have recently launched a 0% alcohol version of the beer and they want to grow internationally through export along with getting the beer into more venues across the UK. He adds that the support they have had from Cheshire businesses like Franklyn Financial Management and Stephenson Browne estate agents has been overwhelming and he will be forever grateful. As our podcast interview comes to an end and Tom’s 6ft 4” frame towers above me, we shake hands and say goodbye, and we promise to meet up soon to toast his success with a lovely cool pint of Bach 95.KatyTo hear more of my chat with Tom, scan the QR code or search for Arch Publications online to listen to our podcast

20LAST Autumn, Friends of Goostrey Station were delighted that Goostrey Beavers held another meeting at our railway station. All the children were keen to sweep up fallen leaves, to plant daffodil bulbs in tubs and to investigate the bug hotels. They also enjoyed a craft activity in the Art Studio. Everyone worked hard and by the time they went home, the sun had set. As their parents collected them, a casual comment about being able to see stars and planets in the night sky, led to plans for another joint meeting. Thus, early in February, FOGS treasurer and vice chair Craig Sidebotham, himself a a keen amateur astronomer, led an astronomy session at Goostrey Scout Hut. The aim was to help the Beavers achieve a Space Activity Badge. To be successful each had to complete four challenges :• Point out some of the things you can see in the night sky. It could be stars, the moon or planets.• Point out and name at least one constellation you can see.• Name the eight planets in our solar system and draw or make a model of one of the planets. • Find out about a space mission, an astronaut or a planet in our solar system.First Craig connected his lap top to a large TV screen and used a planetarium program to show the constellations and planets. He also demonstrated how the stars move across the sky during the night. Then the Beavers were given pictures of the sun and planets and they were asked to work out their order. After a lot of running around, the correct arrangement was established!Next Craig used pictures to explain some of the missions into space including the Apollo Saturn 5 rocket, the moon landings and the International Space Station. At the end of the session, all the Beavers were excited to see two astronomical telescopes. Craig explained how they worked, but unfortunately the sky was cloudy and so the children were unable to use them outside. Perhaps this could be the focus of a second evening of astronomy!Currently FoGS are planning another joint activity, this time with Goostrey Parish Archive. If you have photos or stories relating to the history of Goostrey railway station that you could share with FoGS, please get in touch with Chris Burgess on 07976 894737. FoGS volunteers continue to meet each month at Goostrey station. There’s a car park, but you could choose greener transport by walking or cycling (there’s a new rack for your bike). You may have noticed a smart new noticeboard at the entrance to platform one. It’s there to help us to publicise FoGS and Goostrey Art Studio more effectively. You could also have a look at our website or email Craig Sidebotham on 29craimar@talktalk.net Friends of Goostrey Stationfriendsofgoostreystation.org Friends of Goostrey Station...

24IT’S normally around this time that I look back on what I thought was going to happen in 2023, against what’s happened so far given we’re already 1/4 of the year in! This year is slightly different in that everything’s all still a little wonky right now, so I’m going to go out on a limb and tweak a few of my statements about what’s going to be on the menu later this year. So, while I still think we’ve not peaked with rums and agave (tequila) yet, there’s still a lot of growth in the availability of cleaner, tastier, smoother spirits in those categories, I reckon you’re going to see more spritzy drinks, more mead, and more lower strength, longer drinks this summer. It shouldn’t come as a surprise when I say the Aperol Spritz was one of the most searched drinks on Google last year. Its bright orange look, fruity, sweet refreshing taste is not hard to dislike. To this end, expect to see more longer, soda-based fruity cocktails on the menu this summer, like this strawberry and mint spritz you can make at home. (Hint, if you blend the sweetened strawberries and stick them in the freezer you can add them to a drink whenever you want!).Take a punnet (400gr) of fresh strawbs, add 1 tbs of caster sugar and a glug of water to a blender. Blend to a pulp, and either pour into ice cube trays to freeze, or into 8 tall glasses fi lled with ice. Add some fresh mint, a shot of gin, vodka or white rum, 200ml of 7up, or for a drier drink, soda water. Stir well, and stick another sprig of mint into half a strawberry to garnish. This drink is infi nitely tweakable, too sweet, add less caster sugar, want more booze, add another shot, or swap the 7up for Prosecco… it is nearly summer after all!Until next time, see you at the bar.Rich, The Beer Emporium Bottle BankFrom the bar, by Rich

Last year we moved to our new home base at the Holmes Chapel Health Centre. It took a lot of time and effort to make the four new raised beds and get them ready for growing. We also installed a community table where anyone can put their excess fruit and vegetables for anyone to help themselves at any time. This proved to be incredibly popular, especially around apple picking time.Following on from this successful year, we want to encourage more people to join in and grow their own vegetables. Home Grown have always used the first dig in March to plant seeds in trays, so that, come May, we have plenty of strong baby plants ready to grown on in the veg beds. This year is slightly different. We will be putting posters around the village to encourage more people from the community to come along on Saturday 4th March at 10am, outside the Health Centre, to plant up two trays to take home, and see exactly what Home Grown in Holmes Chapel is all about. All we ask is that you bring back one tray in May so we can plant these in the community beds. There will be people there to help you with the planting. The bonus is that you can choose which seeds you want to plant, without the expense of buying seeds, seedlings, compost and trays. And enjoy a free drink of tea or coffee and a slice of cake at the end.If you’d like more information about Home Grown in Holmes Chapel check out our Facebook page @Home Grown in Holmes Chapel where you can leave us a message. Home Grown in Holmes ChapelSaturday 4th March 10am until 12noonOutside the Holmes Chapel Health Centre The Plan....You will plant up two trays with vegetable seeds. (One is for you to keep and the other you will grow and then bring back to Home Grown on Saturday 6th May.)The Detail....You will be able to choose which seeds you want in your tray. Maybe try a combination of seeds, for example a couple of tomatoes and a couple of courgette with either peas or beans to complete your selec-tion. Or try your hand at pumpkin growing. The Home Grown team will be on hand to offer advice and guidance. All equipment and instructions will be provided. All you need is a light, warm indoor window sill on which the trays can sit while the seeds ger-minate and grow. The Reward....2 Hours to meet and help the Home Grown in Holmes Chapel Team!A Free tray of seedlings for you to keep..... and if that is not enough....The session will end with a hot drink and slice of homemade cake!Follow us on Facebook @Home Grown in Holmes Chapel for Community Gardening updates.Calling all gardenersbudding (and experienced) Please join our Seed Sowing Session

32Katy meets... KW KitchensONE frosty morning in January, I took a trip to the lovely town of Nantwich to visit KW Kitchens in their new showroom at Pillory House Coffee Shop and Gallery based at 18 Pillory Street. The benefit of the showroom being positioned in a coffee shop, which is a licensed venue serving a delicious range of breakfasts, lunches and hot and cold drinks, is that before I get chatting to Roger the owner, I am able to warm up by tucking into a tasty full English and a mug of tea.Pillory House is a historical building only a five-minute walk from one of the town’s main car parks at Love Lane, and alongside the coffee shop and showroom there is also a gallery selling gifts and art, including works from award-winning artist Lucy Pittaway, famous for her imaginative paintings of sheep and cows. KW Kitchens is a family business which has been trading for 12 years, and Roger tells me since starting the business they built their customer base through their website and would visit clients in their homes, showing them the ranges of tops and cupboards. When Roger and his wife took over the coffee shop and gallery late last year, adding the kitchen showroom was a priority.Roger keeps on top of trends as the manufacturers bring out different colours. He explains that when he first started in the industry, people went for more beiges and creams, now customers like bolder tones like blues and greens. He often designs them with two strong colours that complement each other. Worktops have also moved on from lamination, granite, and quartz to acrylics, which is a hardwearing engineered kitchen surface material. Acrylics are a great option for worktops as they can be seamless and you can have matching backsplashes moulded. They are also available in a large range of colours, styles and finishes. When it comes to design, Roger spends time with his customers working with them on ideas, and having the showroom means he can have on-display a large range of kitchen doors and worktops samples for inspirations on colours and style. Roger points out that a customer doesn’t always need a whole new kitchen as KW Kitchens specialises in renovations, this means they can very often work with the units already in place, refreshing the kitchen with new doors and tops. This can often save money and the inconvenience of removing everything from the old kitchen. However, his team are experts at the whole kitchen refurbishment journey, his son also works for the business, and they can do every part from the electrics to the tiling. He makes sure everything is planned out and customers don’t have to wait around for different tradespeople to come and go. This planning also means the disruption is kept to a minimum and customers can soon get back to day-to-day life, with the luxury of a fabulous new kitchen. As a customer comes into Pillory House, Roger excuses himself and gets back to work. With a kitchen being the heart of the home and the room we probably spend the most time in, it is important that it fits around our individual lifestyles, and the expertise and experience Roger and his team have gives me confidence they are the perfect business for the job. The showroom is perfectly placed for customers to take a trip into Nantwich, have some lunch and plan their perfect kitchen. To start designing your dream kitchen go to www.kwkitchens.co.uk.Katy

38Eco tips for our villages...I’M absolutely delighted to have been asked by Katy to make a monthly content contribution to The Villages Mag focusing on sustainable living! My name’s Sam, I’ve lived in Holmes Chapel for 11 years and have recently launched Fillarup delivering refillable, eco-friendly and cruelty-free, cleaning, laundry & body care products to households and businesses in and around Holmes Chapel. As a working Mum of two I’m very aware of the busy lives most of you readers lead so my plan for this feature is to keep it short and to the point by suggesting three simple things you can incorporate into your daily lives to be a bit more ‘eco-friendly’. No fuss, no massive over-hauls, no need to be perfect just ideas that acknowledge that if we all make a few small changes, Holmes Chapel as a whole can make a big impact! Here’s three ideas for March:1. Green up your Spring clean by swapping disposable cleaning wipes and kitchen roll for washable wipes - I’m sure there are lots of suppliers of reusable cleaning wipes out there but personally I’m a big fan of Cheeky Wipes (www.cheekywipes.com - they do all sorts of other reusable products too such as baby wipes, make up wipes, period pants, washable nappies). Whilst the initial cost is higher than disposable options, in the longer term there’s a big financial and environmental saving.2. Hang your clothes out to dry - Pretty obvious one but swapping the tumble dryer for an outdoor clothes line now it’s Spring (or even an indoor heated airer such as Dry:Soon for wet days) will save energy, be kinder to your clothes and cheaper too. Worried about not having fluffy towels?! Try mostly drying towels on the line and then finishing them off in the tumble dryer with a damp tea towel to keep them nice and fluffy!3. Home compost your food waste - Home composting is the most environmentally-friendly way of dealing with kitchen and garden waste, plus it produces compost that can be used in your veggie patch, herb garden or salad growing boxes! There’s lots of guidance on line (www.rhs.org.uk is a good place to start) but basically buy a compost bin, put garden and food waste in it, ‘turn’ it from time to time then use it!Sam, Fillarup Holmes Chapel

46Our local heritage...NUMBER 1 Macclesfi eld Road now houses the Don Alberto Italian restaurant and looks like a period building, though it dates only from around 2002. Outwardly it looks very similar to the previous double fronted building on the site, which in Victorian times was owned and inhabited by Samuel Swain, a plumber, ironmonger, painter and decorator who, with his brother James, provided essential services when the village was much smaller (only 500 inhabitants) but more self-suffi cient. Swain Bros occupied the shop on the left hand side and Sam’s wife Emma ran a haberdashery next door. After their time other businesses took over the premises – their daughter Kathleen sold women’s and baby clothes for many years and there were other dress shops, there was a pharmacy run by Mr Quinn and, later, a travel agent, a discount store, the Oasis cafe run by the Holmes Chapel churches and the offi ce of Poole and Alcock, solicitors. Shortly before its demolition, a box of old account and copy books from Swain Bros were found in the building and passed on for research and safe keeping by local historians. These have recently been passed on to our group and a decision had to be taken about their future as our group does not have suitable storage facilities. The seven books, though mostly legible, are very fragile due to age and are in need of professional conservation. Fortunately, the County Record Offi ce at Chester has an interest in local business records (and the necessary expertise) and has accepted the Swain books into its collection for assessment, conservation and storage in appropriate conditions. Once catalogued they will be accessible for many years to come to anyone with an interest in this aspect of local history. In some ways, the contents of the books are rather mundane, being the daily details of running an ordinary, everyday business, but the passage of time makes them valuable, particularly when cross referenced against other sources. So we can learn more about the local gentry, where they lived, and how much it cost to keep these grander houses in good repair as well as the lower expenditure of more modest households.Other customers included the parish church and local chapels as well as schools and local businesses, including Morreys which, of course, is still going strong. The letters reveal a varied business, from signwriting for the Red Lion (“Dinners, Teas and Billiards”) to supplying paint to village wheelwrights. A letter from James Swain to a relative reveals some competition between Swain Bros and the rival ironmonger Henshaws, who had rolls of wire netting on display outside their shop on The Square - James urged Uncle to send some more so they could do the same. The importance of rail transport is also evident from the letters, which often refer to goods having to be collected from the station. This delightful photograph shows the shop frontage with Samuel, James and an assistant proudly displaying their wares.Holmes Chapel U3A Local History Group

50Spring is coming soon. Like Interior Design there is a real mix-up of what isevolving in this fabulous world of colour and pattern. On one hand we have the Northern European Scandi feel and on the other strongcolours and maximalism. No one has to follow current trends, in fact it is quite refreshing when Silk and Stonesee something that is not normally on the High Street. However, it is very difficult tofind the unusual, an individual item or fabric that is quite special and rare withinday -to -day availability. So … with what is ‘out there’ how can you make your home that wonderful, interesting place to inhabit without looking too generic?Décor itself, does not necessarily have to change to harshly from design to design, especially as flooring, wallpaper and furniture are all expensive and can become toobig a project and expense to keep replacing. We sometimes have to learn to live withour choices and keep in mind the long term.Style does change over a period of a decade but does have some small nuances ofideas in between, with a gradual evolving design seeping into the following decade. The 60’s to 70’s were a definite change from the 80’s, Silk and Stone believe the 20”sare going to have a more planet friendly style, designs related to our well-being andpersonal tastes. Items available are going to be even more eclectic, with a sense ofpermanence. Revival of antiques, vintage and their beauty will be introduced insmall ways. Existing furniture re-invented. An Example of permanence is the earth colours introduced during the pandemic. Now three years on, these colours are still prevalent, but we are also falling back intodesign history, by adding stronger colours, such as mauve. If you are a little frightened of experimenting with colours, as has always been theadvice, keep your canvas such as walls muted – but then cover-up some of this plainenvironment with unusual cushions for your sofa. If your reasonable with a sewingmachine, for example, you can switch one on! it is really simple to make your ownscatters. This will give you the flexibility to route around those remanent basketsand find fabric that you would not normally see on a ready-made cushion, go forpattern as well as colour. Clash a little and mix prints. Artwork is the other great way to individualise your home. Art is very personal andshould reflect you – go for what you like, also unless you have an instant love of apiece, artwork can suddenly creep up on you and what you skim over at first canafter viewing a little longer, suddenly be the piece for you, so do not rush viewingart, take your time. 54A day in the shoes of a podiatrist...EVER wondered what a podiatrist does? If you were a fly on the wall, what kind of foot problems would you expect to see? Here’s a quick peek into a working day of a podiatrist.Podiatrists do cool stuff and meet some very cool people. We treat people of all ages from toddlers to people in their hundreds! We get to chat with and help people from all walks of life. The wonderful thing about being a podiatrist is we can become someone’s hero in a matter of minutes! There’s not many professions where someone walks into your office in pain and walks out telling you they feel like they’re walking on air! Of course, this is not always the case, but our aim is always to help someone to manage their condition, feel better and move more easily.Like other medical professions, Podiatry has different specialisms. Musculoskeletal podiatrists treat pain that is more than skin deep such as heel pain, arthritic problems, or sports injury. NHS podiatrists treat high risk diabetic or vascular patients and people with foot ulcers. Some specialise in paediatrics, dermatology, rheumatology, or nail surgery. All podiatrists are trained to give anaesthetic and provide minor surgery. Some even become Podiatric (foot & ankle) surgeons.Podiatrists may work in clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, prisons, M.O.D, or for sports teams.A typical day at Ayres Health varies depending on the patient list. We arrive early to set up clinic and sterilise instruments ready for patients, check emails and respond to enquiries.Anna is a general podiatrist, and her patients range from older people with nail problems or painful corns, working mums on their feet all day, children with verruca’s, people with diabetes or vascular problems to footballers with ingrown toenails.Andrew treats musculoskeletal conditions in the lower limb. His patients range from runners with an injury, anyone with heel, foot or ankle pain and older patients with arthritic problems affecting mobility. He works with patients in his rehab gym providing video gait analysis, exercise plans and adapting orthotics (insoles).Between patients we write up our clinical notes, referral letters to other practitioners or treatment plans for patients. When not treating patients, we’re working on the business and may be ordering stock, updating policies & procedures, designing information leaflets, writing a blog for the website, or updating our social media. We don’t claim to have a glamorous career, but Podiatrists love what they do because we have a varied day that primarily involves helping to free people from their foot pain to walk with comfort and confidence again! Anna & Andrew Ayres, Ayres Health

58BY the time these words go to print, we’ll have had the first PPG meeting of 2023. Cards on the table, it’s been a rough couple of months at the practice; sickness of both staff and patients has seen resources stretched further than before. And while some staff have left, others have joined the team, all of whom are looking forward to becoming an integral part of the community. Thank you to everyone at the practice for all your hard work, and to the village for bearing with them during this winter flu season. We as a PPG are also gearing up for the coming year, working out what fundraising activities we can do, identifying the equipment we can buy that will support the GP’s desire to give us the best care possible. Fingers crossed we can replicate the success of last years’ Community Sports Day! We have had quite a few people request to join the panel and help make a difference, and we’ll be getting in touch with some of you in the coming weeks. If you’re a business and interested in supporting our fundraising, please drop us a mail and let us know - our only aim is to help care for the village we’re so proud to live and work in.In other news, the shift to electronic prescriptions has highlighted issues on the pharmacy side, and while the online triage system that was switched off at the end of last year has been reinstated, the volume face-to-face appointments has remained consistently high. I think we can take that to mean that despite staffing issues, the GP and nursing team at the Health Centre worked their socks off… Until next time.Rich JepsonHolmes Chapel Health Centre PPG Patient Participation Group

Hidden behind St Luke’s Church, in an 18th Century Grade II Listed Georgian Town House. The Tearoom is run by Janet and a small team but they really do deliver big. Their menu has a brilliant choice of breakfast and lunch items, all of which are homemade on the premises and the portions are nothing to be grumbled at. They offer lighter lunches such as sandwiches, paninis, salads and when asked what their soup of the day is you are usually greeted by a list of about 6 or 7 to choose from. They also offer some amazing hearty meals like lasagne, freshly made pies, chilli, scampi and the classic farmhouse ham, eggs and chips. However, what we came for this afternoon was one of their amazing Afternoon Teas. A group of 6 mums making use of a free afternoon to catch up somewhere cosy and enjoy a beautifully made treat. The Cobbles have two Afternoon Teas you can pre order with 24 hours notice. Their standard one is £11 per person and their deluxe version is £14.50. We went for the standard one today which, when brought out on it’s three tiered stand, looked as impressive as always. The bottom layer was made up of freshly made finger sandwiches with ham, chicken, egg mayo and tuna. Along with some sausage rolls and mini bitesize quiches. The middle layer was an array of homemade cakes including coffee and walnut, lemon drizzle, a naughty chocolate brownie and a red velvet cupcake. Finally, on top, was their gorgeous scones, sliced in half and topped with fresh cream and strawberries. The staff always give us a warm welcome and the food served is always so good. There is seating inside, in their bright conservatory and also in their small but cute courtyard which is great for warmer days. So if you haven’t yet discovered the Cobbles Tearoom, I suggest you grab a friend and pay a visit soon. They are open each week from Wednesday to Saturday from 9am until 3pm for eat in, takeaway and delivery. You can also book The Cobbles for a evening function, for parties over 10 people for a special occasion. Find them at 5 Church View, Holmes Chapel. Jenny, Days Out and Meals Out Reviews

64HC Partnership news...AS Holmes Chapel Partnership is getting ready to hand out cheques to local organisations who took part in the Santa Sleigh Run in December (see previous issue of the Villages Mag) we are asking ourselves what we do to ensure that this well-loved tradition can be maintained in the future. Especially now that we have a newly refurbished sleigh. As a cost cutting measure Cheshire East Council has withdrawn funding from not only Holmes Chapel Partnership but Sandbach, Congleton, Middlewich and Alsager too. Each Partnership has received a grant of £8000 per year for the last 10 years or so – but no longer! No more money from Cheshire East. We understand that times are hard for everyone and Local Authority funding by central government has been cut by 40% over recent years but we are disappointed that Cheshire East Council left it until mid-January 2023 to tell us that there would be no more money in the financial year starting April 2023.We use this money to help run the organisation: we have basic costs like mail Chimp to send out the Newsletter, admin support to run the website and all that entails and to do paper work – which leads us neatly to our most high profile event: the Christmas Market!. Such an event does not just happen spontaneously. There is a great deal of administrative work: organising the road closure, ordering the stalls and taking stall bookings (we have already had many enquiries for December 2023) as well as all the form filling and consulting with local businesses and organisations. The Christmas Market is non-profit making but we have used our grant from Cheshire East to support this event and our other projects, alongside many hours of volunteer time. We are grateful to local businesses for their sponsorship which helps to pay for the lighting and the stage but if the Christmas Market is to continue, we need to be confident about financing it.We are hoping that the Parish Council might help us out and thankfully initial soundings have been positive! We are also exploring other ways of financing ourselves but if you have a bright idea or a contact you feel might be useful, please do get in touch!Best WishesHazel Sutcliffe, Chair Holmes Chapel Partnership hazel.sutcliffe@hcpartnership.org.uk

68Let’s talk legal...SPRING – the season of love and cohabitation agreements. Love is in the air and with that comes the excitement of moving in with a partner or buying your first house together. Having decided to live with one another you may think that it is just a question of booking the removal company but if you are moving in with your partner, or if you are buying a property, it is important to make sure that you are both protected by a cohabitation agreement.Cohabitation agreements: Spring sees a big increase in inquiries about family law agreements. Often the initial inquiry is from a concerned parent wanting to ensure that their child’s hard-earned deposit is protected if the couple split up or the call comes from an adult child worried about what will happen to the family home now dad is talking about his partner moving into the property. Whatever the reason for the first contact with Evolve Family Law, enquiring about a cohabitation agreement is sensible planning, much like writing a new Will or Lasting Power of Attorney or checking your life insurance cover. These are all vital but boring bits of entering into a new chapter in a relationship.Family law agreements: Family lawyers can talk you through the different types of family agreement options including: • Declarations of trust between joint owners of a property as you can buy a property jointly either as tenants in common or as joint tenants. The type of joint property ownership you select has an impact if your relationship breaks down or on the death of a partner so it’s important to understand your options• Cohabitation agreements between cohabiting couples – an agreement can be prepared if you are buying a house together or if one of you is moving to your partner’s home• Prenuptial agreements between couples engaged to marry• Postnuptial agreements between married couples. For example, if a parent wants to gift their child money to pay off the mortgage on the family home but the parent wants to make sure that their money is protected in case of divorceWhatever type of family law agreement you choose for your circumstances it is just as important to make sure that your loved ones are protected with a new Will. That way if one of you passes away neither of you is left in a financial predicament because you did not ignore the boring bits associated with moving in together.Whilst the lawyers at Evolve can’t promise to make cohabitation agreements and Wills exciting, we can promise peace of mind for you and your loved ones.
