FOGS A double celebration for FOGS members On Sunday 8 March between sunshine and showers FOGS members took time out of their regular monthly working party at Goostrey Station to celebrate two events First Bill MacDonald mounted the 2019 Campaigns Award from the Cheshire Best Kept Station competition on the wall of the road bridge beside the Manchester platform This Award recognises the negotiations over a number of years which resulted in the repair of the Victorian wooden building It s now displayed alongside four Awards from previous years Later that morning a plaque in memory of the late Cyril Caulkin was unveiled by his son Andrew It was fitting that Cyril s brother Keith two of his grandchildren and several friends were able to be there as well The plaque reads In memory of Cyril Caulkin founder member of the Friends of Goostrey Station whose vision initiated the restoration of the old ticket office Just before the unveiling Cyril s friend Peter Godfrey made a short speech on behalf of FOGS members He explained that As Parish councillors Cyril and I started Friends of Goostrey Station in 2012 From then until his untimely death Cyril was the Chair But he was 6 in fact much more than Chair he was Cyril a larger than life figure with an infectious smile and a twinkle in his eye who made every FOGS volunteer feel appreciated and valued During our Action Days at the station he would move around from volunteer to volunteer having a chat and a laugh with everyone who had turned up After a few words from Cyril the work seemed easier and the day seemed brighter Although some members said that Cyril only did it to get out of the heavy digging which took so much time in those early Action Days they completely missed the point He was the glue that held the group together Peter added that Cyril would have loved to see this station building so beautifully restored And he would be delighted that we are still working to improve our station New volunteers are always welcome at our working parties they take place on the second Sunday from 10am As well as gardening and sweeping FOGS members are involved in planning the future use of the station building the installation of cycle racks in the car park and the improvement of passenger safety on the bridge For more information please contact Dave Roberts vice chair on sharp shooter talktalk net Friends of Goostrey Station

Advancing Technology T he first two months of 2020 have seen two examples of technology on the move On 14 January Windows 7 went end of life and February 20 saw several of our TV channels move leading to some people losing the BBC You were probably quite happy with Windows 7 and wonder why you are being forced to upgrade to 10 The fact is that Microsoft supports a product for ten years after launch and time was up The good news is that Windows 10 is a good replacement isn t really all that different and you can install a program that restores the old Windows 7 menu too so that it feels familiar Even better you can still do it for free if you do it the right way But don t just ignore it Windows 7 will have no more security updates and you really don t want criminals accessing your computer even if you don t use it much A hint for everybody Remember to leave your computer switched on for a few hours every month to allow it time to update I often see computers that are not protected just because their owners only check their emails briefly before switching off again Several frustrated people have asked me why they keep having to retune their TVs It is all part of clearing the area above 700MHz to be used by mobiles Unfortunately we can t retune every TV transmitter in the country on one day It has to be done region by region in such a way that a change of frequency doesn t cause interference in a neighbour region that hasn t changed yet a process that has taken three years We will have our 26 final retune on 22 April which is a big one If you are having problems even after retuning it may indicate a problem with the aerial that needs looking at before April 22 If you live in a home or block of flats with a communal system have a word with the manager so it can be professionally adjusted In the meantime if you have lost BBC 1 and 2 try 101 and 102 which are the high definition HD versions with sharper pictures Older sets may not get HD though so try 751 to 759 but these will be switched off on 22 April All this only affects people who get their TV through an aerial i e Freeview YouView BT Vision and EE TV If you get yours from a satellite dish i e Sky or Freesat you are not affected Andrew GoogleboxTech Your friend in the tech trade I I I PC and Laptop Repairs Health Checks Tuition and Advice TV Aerial Satellite Call Andrew 01477 771774 Website www goggleboxtech uk 07766 985 029 tv goggleboxtech uk

Our local heritage W hat s in a loaf During the 1930s Dr Lionel Picton who had been the Holmes Chapel GP since 1903 and who was the subject of an earlier feature in this magazine devised a recipe for a wholemeal loaf which became known as Fertility Bread Dr Picton was an advocate of healthy eating and good nourishment He strongly believed that a woman s good health was essential for fertility and the nurturing of a healthy baby An intended aid towards this was a wholemeal loaf made from locally grown and ground wheat mixed with half its weight in raw wheatgerm Dr Picton believed that Vitamin E found in wheatgerm was an essential aid to fertility Moreover the ingredients had to be absolutely fresh and 38 baked within 48 hours as the potency of the Vitamin E would diminish The resulting loaf was both nutritious and tasty A patent was obtained by William Mandeville and production began at his bakery on Macclesfield Road Holmes Chapel The wheat germ came fresh off the rollers of a Liverpool mill and the fame of the loaf soon spread Loaves were sent far and wide by post and the bakery received letters asking for advice from all over the world However its popularity was short lived Production ceased with the commencement of the Second World War as the Ministry of Food cut short supplies of the wheatgerm as a war measure and post war production proved impracticable Unfortunately there are no figures available as to an increase in the population attributable to the bread Holmes Chapel U3A Local History Group

School reports T his week we have had Spencer from Inner Trust to take forward our Capture Crew initiative supported by The Remembering Nell Foundation A number of school students from years 7 13 have put their names forward to be part of this exciting initiative The Capture Crew initiative is aimed at giving students of the village a voice via the medium of film Over the course of the remainder of this academic year the pupils will be planning filming and editing a range of projects to highlight various aspects of village life They are initially working on a film that will be put together looking at people s memories of VE VJ day The video will be shown in St Lukes Church Hall over the VE VJ celebration in May and Alison Wright is taking a lead in bringing it all together Later in the year we also aim to create a film project around Nell s garden and in a wider sense Holmes Chapel Life This is a very exciting opportunity for the young people in our village to show things from their perspective The Youth Parish Council are also engaged in a Capture Crew project with Spencer also detailing the work the Youth Parish Council is engaged in Mr Roberts and Alison Wright on behalf of the Capture Crew 40 G oostrey Community Primary School has an active Eco Committee with adult and child members With funds raised from the recycling of Christmas cards the Eco Committee have decided to help wildlife both at home and abroad Following the devastating fires in Australia Goostrey Primary School has joined the Koala Protector Scheme to help injured animals We are also supporting Low Moss Wood by readopting Jasper and Mr Daniels has sent us this new picture of our magnificent snowy owl And we re helping the WWF to protect the future of the Amur leopards and tackle some of the biggest environmental challenges the natural world is facing We will continue our work this year and decide who we want to support with our fundraising next Miss Atkins Goostrey Community Primary School

Let s talk legal S hould I go to court to see my child When you ask a family law solicitor should I go to court because after my separation I am not spending as much time as I would like with my child you expect the answer to be yes However children law solicitor Louise Halford says the answer isn t always clear cut She is the first to say that sometimes only the lawyers win by a family going to court to sort out contact and residence after a separation or divorce To understandably anxious parents or grandparents desperate to spend more time with their child or grandchild court may seem the obvious solution but it isn t always the right one Sometimes if communications between parents have broken down or trust has been lost a good children law solicitor and specialist family mediator can sort contact and residence problems without you having to go to court That saves the expense of a court case and all the stress that goes with taking a former partner to court It also avoids the risk of the family judge not ordering the exact contact you want There are some family situations where court is the right option and furthermore it is important not to delay For example If you fear your ex partner will take your child abroad They need a court order or 48 your written agreement if they plan to move overseas but you can also apply to court to stop the move If your former partner is refusing to agree to any contact so your child is missing out on spending time with you If your ex partner is stalling and prevaricating so time is passing without you spending quality time with your son or daughter If your former partner has a narcissistic personality or is engaged in parental alienation If serious allegations have been made and you need a finding of fact hearing A judge can decide on a specific allegation so residence and contact can then be resolved for example the judge can be asked to make a finding on how bruising to a child occurred Was it a simple accident that shouldn t affect future contact or not There are many other reasons why going to court can be the best option for you and your children but your children law solicitor should discuss the pros and cons with you to make sure that whatever route you choose it is the right one for you and your family Evolve Family Law
