4Ka xEASTER is just around the corner (as are the school holidays!) although it feels like only yesterday the children went back to school. There are of course plenty of things happening this month aside from an excuse to eat lots of chocolate! Did you know, for example, that 9th April is National Unicorn Day, and that 10th April is Siblings Day? Then we have Earth Day on 22nd April, which has been given added emphasis by recent events and media attention on climate change. The organisers are providing lots of information and free resources for young and old alike who want to become more involved in this vital subject (www.earthday.org).This edition is jam packed with local articles, including Holmes Chapel Cinema programme, the latest from the medical centre from the Patient Participation Group, technology tips, all the Jubilee plan, plus how you can get involved, how to get out into nature by Annette Boden, information about HC Velo, a legal piece from the wonderful Evolve, Jack from JWC and his monthly fitness article and we also meet some of the Comps High Council (plus much much more…).Recently I’ve been reading about how our shopping habits have been changing, especially in this post-lockdown era. According to current predictions, we can look forward to more hybrid retail/digital shopping experiences, more checkout free stores, and rapid growth in the reuse/recycling sector with the second-hand clothing market expected to grow faster than fast fashion. It looks like 2022 is set to be an interesting year in more ways than one!Whatever the upcoming Easter break has in store for you, I hope you and your family get to spend some time together. 8APPOINTMENTSTHE AccuRx Appointments and Triage System is generally popular with patients and is regarded by doctors as very workable, effective and sustainable. It is therefore likely to be here for the foreseeable future. AccuRx Online Request is available during normal office hours via the following link florey.accurx.com/p/N81077. Of course, you can still telephone the practice for an appointment, but using the internet avoids the wait in a queue for the phone to be answered at busy times. VACCINES CURRENTLY the focus of the NHS and of the Practice is to vaccinate all eligible patients for Shingles – this being those in the aged 70-79. If you are in this age range and have not had the vaccine, please call the Health Centre for an appointment. Pneumonia vaccines are also available for those age 65 and above and for vulnerable groups. PUBLIC HEALTH ENGLAND CAMPAIGNONE of the future campaigns is around identifying Hypertension. The CCG will be providing a health monitoring machine to the Practice which will measure weight, height, body fat index, pulse rate and blood pressure. This data will automatically integrate into HCHC patient records. A BP reading greater than 140/90 will result in a GP review, most likely initially with more BP readings over a number of days, to then help identify the root cause of this raised BP. This machine should be delivered some time in April and will be located in our inner foyer. GENERAL UPDATESDEMAND continues to be high for all services. From April the Practice will be ramping up the annual reviews/recalls, but patients should wait to be contacted. In particular this needs to focus on long-term condition management and chronic disease control, ensuring timely access for patients with urgent care needs. A new recalls system invested in by the practice 12 months ago means we have the technology in place now to more effectively recall our patients. The HCHC is grateful to the listeners of Dane Sound Community Radio for the Masked Heroes of the Year Award 2021 presented to the Health Centre for the commitment and selflessness of the clinicians, staff and volunteers during the Pandemic. Paul Carroll, Practice Manager has enjoyed making his broadcasts, and the opportunity to answer listeners questions. 14Technology tips...‘THE times they are a-changin’ sang Bob Dylan. Already TV has gone digital, and radio is very slowly following. But until now, the oldest electronic communication technology of them all has resisted the winds of change – landline telephones. Truly a 19th century invention, analogue telephony is simple and robust, work even over ancient wiring, keeping going during power cuts – power comes from the exchange – and you can purchase a perfectly good one for only a tenner.Sure, the plain old telephone system (POTS, no seriously) has evolved and improved. But the main limitations remain: sound quality is poor and it only supports one call at a time.Nevertheless, it may surprise you to learn that POTS is going to be switched off in 2025, and traditional phone equipment will no longer be sold in about a year’s time. Yes, landlines will go dead. It’s had a good run since Alexander Bell’s first phone conversation in 1876, but with more calls made by mobile than landline today, it’s time to move on. Voice calls will be digital, carried over broadband. If you don’t have broadband, your phone company will migrate you at the same cost as before, so you needn’t worry. Internet Service Providers are already getting ready by issuing hubs with a phone socket and an internal converter, so at switchover, all you need do is plug your old phone into the hub rather than the wall. Simple changes are needed if you have extensions. Some ISPs will issue hubs with built-in DECT for wireless handsets. So for most consumers it will be a minor event. Expect messaging from your phone company nearer the date. The problem for the industry is all the other things that hang off POTS: burglar and fire alarms, panic button pendants etc. But don’t let anyone try to sell you a whole new system, as an adapter is all that will be needed. ISPs should provide battery-backed equipment to you so it works during power cuts.Missing out on a broadband saving?Millions of households are paying £144 a year more than they need to, or missing out on broad-band altogether. If you receive Universal Credit, Pension Credit, ESA or JSA (additional criteria apply), you could get broadband from only £10 a month. A list of companies offering these special tariffs is at www.ofcom.org.uk/news-centre/2022/millions-of-low-income-families-missing-annual-broadband-saving. If you haven’t got Internet access, ring me and I will send you details. Be aware that they do not include landline (there are also social tariffs for that), which you may need if you have a ‘panic button’, and you should check whether you are still in contract. For the rest of us, there are useful money-saving tips here: www.ofcom.org.uk/news-centre/2022/tips-for-cutting-phone-broadband-and-pay-tv-costs. And look at your bills. I recently saved a customer nearly half hers by pointing out she was paying for all her calls, while £5 extra would include them for free.Andrewgoggleboxtech.uk

24Savouring the good...COMPASSION and community - how our deepest nature helps us not only survive through challenging times but thrive, as a person, as a community, as a nation, as a species. It is true that as Jack Kornfield said, “Compassion is our deepest nature” and biology and psychology shows that for every act of kindness we offer-we actually benefit too as it realises oxytocin and endorphins which not only lifts our mood but boosts our immune system. This is just what we need as we continue to be mindful of covid and other viruses. However, we are thankfully moving into our April-the second month of Spring and as the lighter night are here and the warmer weather approaches, now is the time to continue your mindfulness and compassion practice outdoors.Walking meditation is one way to ground yourself in the present moment and strengthen your resilience. Grounding in nature which continues its yearly journey through the seasons. This is something we can trust and enjoy. Taking one step at a time- heel to toe-here and now-and then absorbing your full attention in the nature that surrounds you , even on the gentlest of strolls.Savouring the goodI cannot walk far but when I walk I take in as much of my surroundings as possible-as you can see from the photo of Lovell’s arboretum locally, I didn’t hesitate to take an extended time to enjoy the snowdrops, and I captured them forever in the photo I share with you. When we pay attention to something beautiful experts have shown in research that fourteen seconds is the optimum time for paying attention to something that we then commit to long term memory and can recall more easily. Can you image being able to recall something positive and beautiful each time you feel fearful or despondent, when you have daily struggles and challenges its easy to get swallowed up by negativity and it can be a struggle to find your way out.If you continue to give time and mental energy to being in a state of disconnect from your dream and reality, or a state of imbalance through living in fear, complaining, or expecting the worst-then it’s time to retrain the brain and address what Rick Hanson describes as our ‘negativity bias.’Our brain is designed for our survival rather than our happiness- Velcro for the negative and Teflon for the good-but we have the ability through our own brain’s neuroplasticity to change that – we can activate our ‘soothing system’ through practices of self-care and self-compassion as an antidote to self- criticism and defeatist thinking , and by refocusing your attention on your abilities, capabilities, and strengths- so you bring your life back into balance- to realign your dreams and goals with your intentions and daily habits, so the tracks connect and the train reaches its destination. You can only bring balance and alignment to connect the pathway if you look forwards and upwards- as Oscar Wilde once said: “we may all be in the gutter but some of us are looking up at the stars.”Wishing you all safe and well as we journey through the Spring.Annette Boden

30HOLMES Chapel Velo began life about 8 years ago when a few local friends wanted to ride together and have their own distinctive club kit.Since 2016 when the Tour of Britain first came through the village the club has found its feet and has begun to develop into a friendly all inclusive local cycling club.Cycling is a great way to keep fit and see the countryside and of course meet new friends who want to ride as well. One of the Goals of the club is to promote cycling and starting in March this year we are going to run taster rides for people who’d like to ride but don’t perhaps have the confidence to go out by themselves. Please watch out for Posters on the village notice boards. You don’t need fancy kit, just enthusiasm and a bike that works. We’ll even take a quick look at it to make sure it is roadworthy before we head off around some of the local lanes. Some of the club members are very experienced and regularly race. We’ve had a team racing closed circuits over the past two or three years and we have others who participate in Hill climbs and Time trials organised by other local clubs. There are regular Saturday and Sunday club rides, normally leaving from Costa in Holmes Chapel, ranging from 40km (25miles) to 100km (62 miles) and throughout the summer there are plenty of evening social and training rides to join.We have about 60 members but are hoping to expand over the next couple of years particularly with the aim of increasing our female membership. For those wanting longer endurance rides there are a range of rides and sportives to participate in through 2022 with club rides to the Horseshoe Pass in April, a coast to coast weekend in May and an Anglesey ride in August.Of course, there is the social side to cycling and most of our rides involve a coffee and cake stop for refuelling, however, we also meet off the bikes throughout the year and for our annual awards gathering at Christmas. We have an open Facebook page so if you want to know more take a look and send us a message. You can also look us up at Holmes Chapel Velo Club profile (britishcycling.org.uk) where there are details on how to join.Holmes Chapel Velofacebook.com/HolmesChapelVeloOn your bike!

40Let’s talk legal...UNLESS you’re retired when you separate or divorce, pension provision can be low down on your list of priorities. Whilst that can be understandable if you are in your twenties when you separate, pensions are important in any divorce.Pension options If you are getting divorced, pensions are likely to be a relevant family asset that could either be shared with your husband or wife or the pension value offset. Before you can make informed decisions on your preferred pension option, you need to know the value of the pension funds.Whilst the pension owner is entitled to a transfer value from the pension administrator this figure doesn’t always reflect the true value of the pension fund. Just as you should get the family home or business properly valued, it is equally important to fully understand the real value of a pension.Valuing pensions If you were offered £50,000 now or a future pension sharing order, the likelihood is that you would be tempted to take the cash. However, fast forward to your retirement and you may regret your decision. Assuming you put the money into a new family home do you want to have to downsize on retirement? Will house price increases match the future value of your ex-spouse’s pension fund? If on retirement you invest the £50,000 (and any capital growth) will this produce the same level of income (allowing for pension growth over the years) as a pension sharing order for £50,000?These are tricky questions but that is why it is important to understand your pension options and the true value of your pension fund and that of your husband or wife so you get a fair financial settlement.Pension sharingSome people don’t ask for a share of their spouse’s pension as they aren’t sure how a pension sharing order works and they don’t want to be financially tied to their former husband or wife. A pension sharing order doesn’t work that way as a husband or wife’s pension is split into two separate pension funds when the pension sharing order is made. Any future pension contributions and pension growth of your share of the pension belong to you and vice versa. You are in charge of what is your separate pension fund, subject to the pension scheme rules. If you are separating or getting divorced it is worth giving some detailed thought to pensions and your options to achieve a fair financial settlement. The second-best time is now! You’ve probably heard the term ‘re-hab’, usually referring to the rehabilitation of an injury. But have you heard of the term ‘pre-hab’?It’s fairly self-explanatory, in medical terms, referring to the principle of conditioning the body to cope with future stresses and avoid injury, negating the need to ever require ‘re-hab’. But how can these terms relate to health and fitness on a less clinical level?People often join a gym or hire a personal trainer because their poor lifestyle choices have had a negative impact on their bodily functions and their overall health has taken a hit. They are now working to reverse these effects which can most accurately be compared to swimming upstream. Once we have aches and pains, excess body fat and other restrictions, the process of ‘getting in shape’ becomes a much bigger challenge. What’s much more efficient is keeping on top of your health and wellness, focusing on maintaining a well-balanced lifestyle where you can allow for some flexibility and enjoy some of the finer things in life, guilt free and without What you must ask yourself is, on your current path are you moving towards a healthier body and mind? If not, then the sooner you begin looking after yourself, the easier that journey will be. JWC Health & Fitness

50Introducing the High Council...IN September 2021, we set up the Holmes Chapel ‘High Council’. This is our student led leadership body representing the whole school. 32 Students are now part of the student high council. Let’s meet 4 members, Tabitha Ranfield, Aurelia Pemberton, Millie Allen and Ted Bark Jones.Hi, I’m Tabitha and I’m on the Diversity Committee in the High Council. I like to draw and paint and I love going rock climbing with my sister and cooking dinner with her afterwards! I like to think I’m a good friend and make people happy. I want to represent people who have felt marginalised and I want to try and make school a better and more accessible place for everyone. I want to achieve a fully accessible and joyful school experience for everyone, especially people from minorities and victimised communities to make our school inclusive for everyone, and a truly representative place to be. My name is Aurelia and I am in Year 7. Some of my interests are photography and I particularly enjoy History. I would love to learn about the Battle Of Roses in the 15th century! I am good at Art and really enjoy drawing pictures of beautiful flowers. I want to represent the Student Body because I have always been interested in getting involved in the school , and I feel that I have been given the opportunity to do so in a unique and positive way. I will bring exciting new ideas to the school and be involved in making our school a better place for everyone. I want to raise issues that the students or teachers may be concerned about, making sure that everyone is involved in the decision making process around the school. I am particularly focused on issues surrounding equality in our school amongst our teachers and peers, and I feel that through the high council I will be able to do so. I am enjoying my time on the high council so far, and I am grateful to be chosen for this role.My name is Millie and I am in Year 9. I decided I wanted to be part of the High Council as I believe it gives me the opportunity to represent and make a difference to the school community. Being part of the High Council, I would like to make sure everybody feels like they have a voice and they will be listened to. I also hope that I can support new ideas in moving the school forward especially with ideas that arise from our meetings, and the voice of the students in consultation with our High Council leads and members of staff. I like to believe that I will play a beneficial role in the High Council as my special skills include being organised, friendly and approachable, good at problem solving and effective at seeing other’s perspectives which I believe could come to great use in the High Council. I am currently enjoying my second year of being part of the student panel. This role is another valuable way of utilising the skills I currently have and additionally to develop new skills that will enable me to grow further. These qualities I also feel will be valuable to bring to my new position as part of the High Council. My personal interests and hobbies include reading and outdoor activities such as walking, paddle boarding and bouldering. Hi I am Ted in Year 12, I am interested in the environment around school and helping to protect it and keeping it safe and clean for everyone. I would say I am good at understanding lots of things about the environment and persuading people to do things that help benefit our environment, such as stopping litter and waste which contribute to lots of issues, not just in schools but to the wider population. I wanted to represent the student body as I think it is a great thing to be involved in and I am very passionate about helping the environment and keeping it safe. I hope to achieve an overall more clean environment and stop waste in school by trying to influence members of school to stop littering or potentially harming the schools areas, as they have quite a lot of it, as well as trying to reduce waste in things such as paper.Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School

54Community matters...YOU may be familiar with the name of Holmes Chapel and Area Christian Communicare, as it has helped so many people through difficult times. A local not-for-profit organisation run completely by volunteers, it started in 1981 and was set up to help provide a network of support across the community. Most of the calls received were requests for transport and this then became the main focus of a very successful and efficient service for almost 40 years. Unfortunately, Covid restrictions in March 2020 forced operations to cease, and this was followed by the retirement from the committee of a number of long-standing officers. We are currently seeking to launch a new service which we hope will be up and running in February. This organisation has been renamed Holmes Chapel and District CommuniCARe, and seeks to help local people in need to attend health related appointments within the community or hospitals. A number of the original volunteer drivers are still keen to help, and they will form the nucleus of the new group. However, we are looking to recruit more drivers to assure a more comprehensive and smooth running service. Although a volunteer scheme, all drivers will be reimbursed for the distance they travel, and as before, the passengers will be asked for a donation to cover these costs for their individual journey. In the past, hospital parking charges were waived for the volunteer drivers and we are hoping we will be able to obtain their continued support. Travel requests will be made to a dedicated phone manned by coordinators who will then allocate drivers for specific journeys. Passengers will be required to give a minimum of 72hours notice and there will be certain periods of the day during which bookings can be made. What are the advantages of using the service? People will be collected from their door by a friendly face and driven directly to their appointment. The driver will either wait, or return at the appropriate time to take the passenger home again. This reliable, door to door service is very much appreciated, and historically we found passengers also enjoyed the relaxed and caring attitude of the drivers. For some passengers this may be the only social contact they have had for some time. Drivers themselves can find it a very rewarding experience. For the safety of passengers, all our drivers are fully insured and DBS checked. If anyone is interested in being part of this new venture either as a driver or part of the organisation, we would be delighted to hear from you. Our local heritage...IN July 1938, plans were going ahead to destroy half the village in order to finish widening the A50 trunk road. Parts of the road had already been completed, such as the three lane stretch to the north running up to Allostock, and the three lane stretch to the south towards Brereton Green. Between 1935 and 1937 the County Council had also doubled the width of Cranage Bridge over the river Dane. On the 2nd July 1938, the Crewe Chronicle reported: “RE-BUILDING THE VILLAGE, WHOLESALE DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY.Some day in the near future the quaint picturesque village of Holmes Chapel will be obliterated by the wholesale destruction of property in the centre to make room for the Ministry of Transport’s new trunk road, Winchester – Preston. The left [West] side, from Mrs Barraclough’s house to the George & Dragon will in accordance with the present proposals be demolished, and the new business establishments which are chiefly affected, are to be erected on a building line to the rear of the existing premises. Property along Macclesfield road is, we understand, to share a similar fate in connection with the big scheme.Had it been possible to move the ancient church, which causes the serious obstruction in the centre of this busy highway, many thousands of pounds would have been saved. The owners of the property concerned have been notified by the Ministry of Transport of the steps to be taken to acquire compulsorily the premises which are involved in the scheme, and objections have to be filed by 18th July this year. Tradesmen are perturbed in no mild degree over the drastic measures to be adopted, and an attempt is being made to form an association so that the problems with which they will be faced can be met in some united form instead of acting individually.Former residents of the village who will revisit the place in a year or two’s time will see a great transformation, and an old-world village modernised, with only the old church remaining to remind them of former days.”Any objections submitted must have proved unsuccessful because the Crewe Chronicle reported on 15th October 1938: “BY-PASS PREPARATIONS – Property owners whose buildings are to be demolished to make way for the by-pass road have now received official notices and plans for the requirements of the authorities.”However, war clouds were looming and at the eleventh hour the demolition was cancelled. The demolition of the Bull’s Head seems to have been a high priority because on the 14th March 1939 Wilson’s Brewery opened the Good Companions as a replacement located on the new road building line. Although its license had transferred to the Good Companions, the Bull’s Head remained as a hotel and was not demolished until after the Second World War, in 1948.Holmes Chapel U3A Local History Group

62Coffee...THE Middle East was home to huge numbers of “Schools of the Wise” in the 15th and 16th centuries, and I happen to think maybe we should bring that terminology back to cafes, pubs and clubs – make them the modern Schools for the Wise! Everything would be just that little bit more pleasant if we could all say “I’m just popping out, with the dog, to do a spot of learning, back in an hour or so.” It was not all cream and sugar however, as leadership in the city of Mecca during the early 1500’s was so concerned about the conversations that may be had in these coffee houses, that Khair Beg, the Governor of the city banned the drink. It was declared sinful, that it promoted religious discord, going against all that was right and proper. It was not until over a decade later, the ban was rescinded in 1524, and the Grand Mufti Mehmed Ebussuud Efendi declared it sacred in one of his many fatwa’s.After it had transited through Turkey into Europe some years later, via the trade routes of the day, it was met with similar levels of superstition, this time in Venice, Italy. This dark, intoxicating, aromatic, stimulating drink was a thing of legend, and was condemned by the local clergy. It met with such controversy that his Holiness Pope Clement VIII was asked to intervene. One taste however, and papal approval was granted. Coffee had arrived, and this time, with a blessing.Coffee started to become the early morning drink of choice, replacing the more common serving of beer and wine, and unsurprisingly perhaps, the quality of work and output rose commensurably! By the mid-17th century there were over 300 coffee houses in London alone, and it was at one of these coffee houses, that a group of sailors, merchants, shipowners and captains used to meet and exchange reliable shipping news and gossip. Within 5 years, Edward Lloyd’s Coffee House, formerly of Tower Street, moved to Lombard Street where he installed a pulpit from which auctions were held, and news read. For just under a century, merchants would discuss shipping and insurance matters from the coffee house until they moved to the Royal Exchange on Cornhill as the Society of Lloyds.Coffee had come, some of which had been drunk, and it’s fair to say, coffee helped to change the face of global trade and insurance evermore. So if you thought the humble cup of tea had a significant impact on future global society, it’s equally tasty hot beverage coffee, wasn’t far behind it!Rich, The Beer Emporium Bottle BankMILKBOTscan meto find us•• FFrreesshh MMiillkk •••• FFrreesshh MMiillkk •••• FFrreesshh MMiillkk ••can’t wait! why not visit the milkshack, we are open a day, everyday...•Fresh Milk•• CowtoCup • do you know whereyour milk is from?- is it local? - is it available in reusable glass boles?- is it from 1 herd of cows?- can you visit the cows to say heo?if you can’t answer yes to a of these questions then please try halton farms.a of our fresh milk comes from our cows, on our award winning farm and delivered by our team to your drstep, every monday, wednesday & fridaystay up to date with halton farms, foow us on socialhaltonfarmsmilkshackhaltonfarmswe have lots more products ready to order and deliver to your drstep, fu details can be found on our website haltonfarms.com/order, by caing us 07391 723 546, or by emailing us freshmilk@haltonfarms.comavailable to order now...Fresh Milk available in glass Litres & PintsReal Raw Milk available in glass Litres & PintsMilkshakes available in glass Litres & PintsHalton Farms Fresh Double Cream Halton Farms Butter Orange & Apple Juice Free Range Eggs from Congleton Hayelds of Audlem CheeseClotton Hall Clotted Cream, Custard & Rice Pudding from TarporleyAward winning Burts Cheese Fruit & Veg Boxes from Cuttleford FarmLongley Yogurt Wrights Bakers Real Cheshire Honey scan to order
