While St. David's Day marks a notable occasion, there's a plethora of reasons to adore this time of year. With each passing day, the countryside transforms into a canvas of vibrant hues as elds burst into life with golden daodils, their cheerful blooms soaking up the increasingly frequent sunshine. As temperatures rise, the call of the coast becomes irresistible, drawing us towards captivating destinations like Llandudno. There's something magical about strolling along the seaside, breathing in the fresh sea air and basking in the warmth of the sun. Yet, amidst these spontaneous adventures, March also signals the time for meticulously planning visits to my in-laws' charming campsite in Pembrokeshire.Nestled just beyond Haverfordwest, along the picturesque route to Broad Haven, their campsite oers a tranquil retreat amidst rolling elds. A mere twenty-minute walk from South Cockett Caravan and Camping leads to the pristine shores of Broad Haven Beach—a hidden gem that ranks among the most breathtaking in the UK. For avid campers like myself, it's a destination that promises relaxation and rejuvenation. And should you choose to stay, a warm welcome awaits from Val and Jim, who will gladly assist in securing your pitch. In essence, March epitomises the essence of Wales—captivating scenery, heartfelt hospitality, and a profound sense of tranquillity that lingers long after you've bid farewell to its shores. As we embrace the wonders of March, I hope this month brings you abundant joy and memorable experiences, whether you're exploring the countryside, reconnecting with loved ones, or simply enjoying the beauty of the season.Katy x

8There’s a magnicent new wall hanging in Goostrey village hall which celebrates King Charles 111’s coronation year. Friends of Goostrey Station are proud to have helped Jodrell Side WI in the production this unique work of art.Last summer, professional artist (and vice chair of FoGS) Debbie Goldsmith worked with children at Goostrey Community Primary School and children visiting from Elizabethfontein School in South Africa to explore images of our village. The drawings inspired parts of the wall hanging and are currently displayed in a platform shelter at the station.During the autumn and winter, more than 30 local ladies (including members of FoGS) used a variety of sewing techniques to represent roads, buildings, landmarks and organisations Friends of Goostrey Stationwww.friendsofgoostreystation.orgin Goostrey. The inuence of the railway in our village is seen through the restored station building, station house (the home of the station master), a keystone from the original road bridge and FoGS logo. In February, Chair of Crewe2Manchester Community Rail Partnership, Mark Barker, cut the ribbon at the unveiling event. He explained that CRP exists to strengthen links between the railway and the community, and so it helped to nance the project. He added that he already knew from working with FoGS over many years that there was a strong community spirit in Goostrey, and this is clearly reected in the wall hanging. There’s more information about FoGS on our website friendsofgoostreystation.org. If you would like to join our enthusiastic team of volunteers as we work to improve our local station, please get in touch with FoGS chair, Craig Sidebotham on 29craimar@talktalk.net. You can meet FoGS members during our working parties at Goostrey station between 10 and 1pm on the second Sunday of each month. The next will be on 10th March and 14th April.

12Some of the road names in Holmes Chapel are self explanatory - Northway, Westway and Eastgate Road. There is even a ‘Southlands’, a house that was built at the original end of The Drive which has now been extended into Southlands Road. Some of the most recent new names appear on the Victoria Mills Development on Maccleseld Road. This was the site of the wallpaper factory. Two of the managers’ names have been used for road names ‘George Jackson Avenue’ and ‘James Walker Drive’. Also on that estate is ‘Henry Cotton Way’. He was born on 28th January 1907 in Holmes Chapel (though brought up in London) and became the leading British player of golf of his generation winning the Open Championship in 1934, 1937 and 1948.Several of the road names are connected with village doctors of the past. In 1900 Dr Sutton lived at The Hollies which was on the site of Bernard Court (named after Sir Bernard Lovell of Jodrell Bank). Dr Sutton was the origin of ‘Sutton Oaks’, the retirement bungalows adjacent to the telephone exchange on London Road. Doctor Lionel Picton took over the practice from Dr Sutton in 1903. He built a house, ‘Sadler’s Close’ on the site of what is now the car park of the George and Dragon. He had bought the land, a ‘close,’ from the saddler, Tom Plant. Lionel’s son Arthur succeeded him as the village doctor, buying a house on the corner of Chester Road and London Road, at the time called The Woodlands. He renamed the house ‘The Milling Field’ in 1946 and built a surgery there. It is said that this is the site of the eld where prize ghts were held in the past, a ‘mill’ being a crowd of people. Picton Our local history...street namesByHolmes Chapel u3a Local HistorySquare also owes its name to the doctors. Rees Crescent, adjacent to Picton Square, was named after the headmaster of Saltersford School, Herbert Rees OBE.Many of the estates have themed names:- the Lake District estate, the Cheshire estate, the Scottish estate and the more recent estates having tree names, river names or ower names. Other road names need more explanation. Holmes Chapel was twinned with Bessancourt, 30 km north of Paris. Bank Farm Grove preserves the name of Bank Farm which was on the site and farmed by the Ford family. Brookeld Drive and Oakeld Rise were probably eld names on the land across Middlewich Road from Bank Farm House.Sandiford Rd is , of course, named after Sandiford Cottage, which was on the site of the precinct, the garden of which was the site of several village occasions during the First World War period. The stream which runs under the precinct car park (frequently ooding it) then behind the houses in Westway gives its name to Alumbrook Drive. Cotton Field Road is in front of Cotton Hall, a timber framed Manor House. Hawthorn Villas is named after ‘Hawthorn Villa’ which was on the site and was where Mr Herbert Jackson had a market garden and a collection of animals and exotic birds which were much visited by local children when they were sent to buy tomatoes.Names can change and Back Lane became the more sophisticated ‘Chester Road’.There is one mystery - in 1938 there was still a cricket ground with pavilions at the corner of London Road and Station Road. Could this be why Bromley Drive, on the opposite side of Station Road, has the name of a fairly local international test cricketer? Hugh Bromley Davenport 1870-1954 of Capesthorne Hall was the most successful bowler on the West Indies Tour of 1894. He was equally skilled with the cricket bat. Any other suggestions? And how long will it be before we have a ‘Harry Styles Way’?

16The Cafe at Higher Farm on Byley Road, Middlewich. Where you can enjoy a delicious cooked breakfast, while watching horses riding, with a views of the wide open Cheshire countryside.Like most, our Saturday mornings are busy with kids clubs. One is at footy and one is at ballet, so once we were all back home and changed we were all desperate for a yummy lunch. We popped over to The Cafe at Higher Farm after seeing it in @golocalmiddlewich and we are pleased we did. Lunch was so good and so reasonably priced.Even though it was 1pm, I had to have one of their all day cooked breakfasts. I chose the small size, which is still massive by the way. And at just £7.50 its a great price, too.Bacon, sausage, egg, beans, hash brown, mushrooms, plum tomato, baked beans, toast and got to love the black pudding! Yes all that for £7.50 and I couldn’t fault it one bit.Enough about my breakfast. What did the other members of my family order? My husband got the broccoli, stilton & spinach soup with a bread roll. This was presented really nicely, and you could tell it was homemade and just £5.My little girl ordered beans on toast o the children’s menu. The children’s portion is 1 slice of toast for £2.50 which was perfect for her. The adult portion is 2 slices and £3.50 so if your child is a little hungrier this would be a good option. My daughter always likes it when this is an option on a menu.My eldest daughter, who has a good appetite, ordered the pulled pork panini. They had run out of panini bread, so they oered to do it as a toastie, which worked just as well. It was loaded full with pulled pork, bbq sauce, and nacho cheese. She added fries for an extra £2 making her meal £8. It really did look good with plenty of lling. It’s a nice little cafe sat within an award winning horse riding school. There are televisions on the wall showing the indoor horse arena, so if you have a child having lessons ,you can sit in the cafe and watch. We found it interesting to watch and there was more to look at outside too.Two walls of the cafe are completely glass so, it provides great views of the farm land surrounding the riding school. Down the hill you, can see the outside arena with even more lessons happening. I love nding new cafes like this. Supporting independent businesses is so important, especially when they are this good, and the sta were all so friendly. They have a good choice on the menu including some gorgeous looking burgers, jacket potatoes and wraps. I will denitely be back as I’ve been told their Sweet Chilli Chicken Wrap is highly recommended.Top Info: Open 7 days a week, 9am - 5pm. Eat in or take away. All day breakfasts. Lunch. 20JWC Health & Fitness have this week begun work on their £100,000 gym expansion, which will see a 30% increase in floor space to meet demand for personal training and group exercise sessions. As part of an impressive refurbishment, the coach-led health and fitness experts are set to unveil a brand-new mezzanine floor to host a specific personal training area, as well as increase their already extensive group training timetable by up to 40% over the coming months. Since August 2023, the facility has maintained a cap on memberships to ensure ease of booking for their long-standing members, as well as boasting an incredibly busy team of personal trainers. JWC’s co-founder, Jack Curr said: “We’re thrilled to be able to finally open the gym up to new members from April. As an independent family business, the ‘post pandemic’ years have not been easy by any means, but we’ve always had the mindset of “if you’re not moving forwards, you’re moving backwards”, so continually strive for growth no matter the circumstances. Our hard work, along with an unwavering belief in the business, our coaching team and community has paid off. I can’t thank the community enough for supporting us, and I hope that our villagers continue to support not only JWC, but all of our incredible independent outlets.”Founded in 2016, JWC seeks to support and inspire individuals to improve their body and mind through a blend of group, one to one, and dual personal training programmes, as well as postnatal exercise, physiotherapy and mental health support. “Our team of coaches have more than 40 years’ combined experience, with clients ranging from complete beginners to those who have been at JWC since we opened more than 8 years ago. We are especially proud of our links to mental health charity ‘Bridging the Gap – Mind Matters’, for whom we are physical therapy providers and strive to raise funds annually. We have an exciting programme of fundraising events throughout the year with a goal of raising upwards of £10,000 to support 15 people through the ‘Respite Programme’ and see them back to full health. We may be busy, and for that we’re incredible grateful, but we are by no means complacent. We strive to continually exceed the expectations of those who have put their trust in us”. JWC are constantly keeping their eyes peeled for new talent to join their ever growing coaching team, and urge those with a passion for health and fitness to get in touch.

22With its main event - the Christmas Market – successfully and safely rolled out once again at the end of 2023, members of Holmes Chapel Partnership have been looking forward to 2024. Despite some positive noises from Cheshire East Highways about making local infrastructure more pedestrian and cycle friendly, we still feel there is a need for our Safe Walking Routes to School campaign. We will be holding another Walk to School event in May to highlight our concerns. The Speedwatch group is also working with Pam Graham, our PCSO, to get back into action in March to raise awareness of speeding around our village. We hope the work on the Dane Meadow pond will have been completed by the Holmes Chapel Partnershipby Peter WhiersChairmantime the frogs start to breed. The Friends of Dane Meadow group work on keeping the paths clear and tending to the new trees – if you would like to join us for a session in the green gym, we meet at 10am on the second Tuesday of the month by the picnic tables. If you feel the urge to write about something happening in and around Holmes Chapel, please put pen to paper – or more accurately nowadays, ngers to keyboard - and send your article to for inclusion in our monthly NewsletterGetting Santa’s Sleigh on the road is another of our projects. On evenings throughout December, local groups bring Santa and his sleigh to as many houses as they can across Holmes Chapel, Cranage, Brereton and Goostrey - regardless of the weather, which was a bit wild on some evenings last December! Donations collected en route are distributed equally between the groups involved, with some passing their share onto local charities. This year we also introduced text donations as spare change becomes a thing of the past. Would you like to get involved with bringing joy and smiles to the community with Santa next December? It is never too soon to start planning for the 2024 run! Or even if you are just looking to contribute an hour or so of your time to making our community a better place, Holmes Chapel Partnership is always on the lookout for people to join in its current projects or to suggest projects they would like to initiate. So, please do get in touch with us at hcpartnership.org.uk or info@hcpartnership.org.uk We are waiting to hear from you!

28If you follow the bar’s social media channels, then chances are you’ll have seen a few posts introducing a new range of cocktails that my incredibly talented team have created. Now while I’m not going to give away all our secrets, I am going to help you understand a little more of the basics of creating your own incredible cocktails - so get practising now and you’ll be able to impress your friends when they pop round for drinks during the summer! The basic tenet of anything decent, (drinks are no exception!) begins with the right ingredients. Quality in, quality out. Good quality booze, fresh fruit, herbs and garnishes, additive-free From the bar, with RichRich, The Beer Emporium Bottle Banksyrups and mixers, and lastly, all mixed and poured at the right temperatures. Start with understanding these, and you’re already going to make a better drink than you’ll get in the vast majority of places on the high street.Next up is the mixologist’s ‘Golden Ratio’. It’s not complicated, just aim for 2 parts spirits, 1 part sweet, 1 part sour, and you won’t go wrong. A great base can then be tinkered with depending on what’s seasonal or in your cupboard, and remember to put anything carbonated in the glass at the end. Shaken cocktails need bigger cubes of ice to chill the drink down, because smaller akes will weaken the drink. Likewise, if you want your drink to remain cold but not watered down, make sure your glassware is chilled and you use bigger cubes when you pour it into the glass.Lastly, presentation. Choose the right glass, and the right garnishes. The shape of the glass is a big factor because the smell of a cocktail will really make a dierence. Aroma’s escape more easily from wide rimmed drinks, so if you’re using plenty of aromatic additions, don’t put them in a highball or use a straw to drink them. With garnishes, use something that’s complimentary, rather than competing. Edible petals, shimmering powder, sweets, egg whites or a vegetarian alternative like aquafaba or a foaming agent, can all add that extra bit of wow to your drink.Until next time, see you at the bar.

If you’re like many homeowners, your loft might be harbouring a treasure trove of belongings, waiting to be sorted and organised. But fear not! With a little guidance, you can transform your loft into a well-organised storage haven. Let’s embark on this journey together.Step 1: Start with a Clear-Out The rst step in reclaiming your loft is to declutter. Take a moment to assess what you have stored away and consider parting ways with items you no longer need. Whether it’s old clothes, unused furniture, or forgotten knick-knacks, a clear-out will help create space for the things that truly matter.Step 2: Check for Unwanted Guests Before diving into storage, it’s essential to ensure your loft is pest-free. Take a quick peek to check for any unwelcome visitors, such as rodents or insects. Addressing any pest issues upfront will safeguard your belongings and ensure a clean storage environment.Step 3: Assess Available Space Unlocking a hidden storage spaceby Alan, Access4LoftsNext, evaluate the space in your loft to determine your storage capacity. Make sure there’s enough room to move around safely when storing or retrieving items. By maximizing your loft’s space, you’ll make the most of every square inch and avoid cluttered chaos.Step 4: Choose Suitable Storage ContainersWhen it comes to storage containers, opt for sturdy options like cardboard boxes. These will provide better protection for your belongings compared to imsy bin liners. Plus, they’ll help keep your items organised and easily accessible.Step 5: Plan Where to Store Items Consider where each item will go once you’ve decluttered and sorted your belongings. Having a storage plan in place will prevent clutter from spilling into other areas of your home and ensure everything has its designated spot.Step 6: Label Your Storage BoxesLast but not least, label each storage box clearly on both sides. This simple step will make it easy to nd what you need when you need it, saving you time and frustration during future searches. Why a Loft Ladder is EssentialWhen it comes to accessing your loft for storage or any other purpose, a loft ladder is indispensable. Installing a loft ladder provides safe and convenient access to your loft space, making it easier to retrieve items and perform tasks. Whether you’re organising storage, conducting maintenance, or simply exploring your loft’s potential, a sturdy loft ladder ensures easy and ecient access, adding functionality and practicality to your home.By following these steps and incorporating a reliable loft ladder into your loft organisation plan, you’ll not only free up valuable space in your home but also create a more organised and functional living environment. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s roll up our sleeves and embark on the journey to a well-organised loft!

2023 was a whirlwind for BTG. This little charity, founded in Congleton, Cheshire went nationwide with a bang. I feel like I blinked and it happened. When BTG was founded we worked with one counsellor who did a single day per week. I did all the PT sessions out of the CrossFit gym, we paid the counsellor and I did the PT sessions for free because we had no funding. There were times I questioned if I was crazy for doing it. But I realised though that I had to make it work. Because these programs worked. They were saving peoples lives. It felt criminal not to share this with the world, and that’s how we took the next big step. We started working with SWANS CIC who had capacity to support more clients, I began travelling to other gyms locally and found JWC in Sandbach. There I met Heather who now plays a crucial role in the running of BTG. The chicken, the egg & the charity! Vicky,Bridging The Gap Mind MattersBut then it happened, people were hearing about this charity that gave free mental health programs, this charity that would actually take you by the hand and help you. Not fob you o with a leaet or a waitlist. A charity that helped you learn how to live a healthy, happy life. And they came, but the money didn’t. This is always the diculty with running a service like this, it’s the chicken and the egg, what comes rst, we need people to know we exist so we can be considered for fundraisers, donations, grants, sponsorship and any kind of support to keep the programs available, but the more people that know about us, the more people that come. It really is a never ending cycle. With 1 in 10 charities going bankrupt and disappearing, we’ve had to work harder than ever to keep going. It’s been tough, but we’re making it work, with some incredible donations and sponsorships from local business’s and organisations we’ve managed to provide support to over 200 people. There’s too many to list here in my 400 word count but I can say truly, we appreciate every single penny that’s donated at btg-mindmatters.org/corporate-sponsorship.You can’t put a price on someone’s life, but £750 is enough to give us a chance to save one.Take a look at www.BTG-mindmatters.org to complete an application.Do you or someone you know need support with their mental health?

54FINANCIAL COURT ORDERS Why you need a nancial court order after your separation or divorceAt Evolve Family Law we regularly come across the situation where a couple separate and reach an agreement about nancial matters but subsequently one of them decides that they no longer like the agreement and makes a court application for a divorce nancial settlement. To avoid this happening to you it is best to apply for a nancial court order even when you have a signed separation agreement. Is a separation agreement legally binding?Strictly speaking, a separation agreement is not legally binding. After you sign a separation agreement you can ask the court to make a nancial order in your favour in dierent terms to the separation agreement or you could face an application for a nancial settlement from your separated spouse. If you signed a separation agreement and did not subsequently get divorced, Let’s talk legal...WithEvolve Family Lawor you got divorced but did not obtain a nancial court order, it is best to talk to a family law solicitor about whether you need to convert your signed agreement into a court order. The process is relatively straightforward if you both agree that you want the court to make an agreed nancial court order in the same terms as the separation agreement. What happens if your spouse does not want to abide by the separation agreement? If your husband or wife wants more than negotiated in the separation agreement, they can apply to the family court for a nancial court order once no-fault divorce proceedings are underway. There is no time limit on an application for a nancial court order so you could have signed your separation agreement 10 or 20 years ago but your ex-partner may still be able to make an application for a larger nancial settlement. The contents of the separation agreement will carry weight. The judge may make an order on the same terms as the separation agreement. The risk is that a judge may question if the agreement should be fully incorporated into an order. For example, because a spouse did not take legal advice or the agreement does not meet the reasonable needs of one party to the marriage.Getting a nancial court order after your separation or divorceWhether you have a separation agreement or not it is best to secure a nancial court order as part of your no-fault divorce proceedings. A clean break nancial court order prevents further nancial claims and cannot be overturned unless there is an element of fraud or dishonesty. For example, in nancial disclosure. As a clean break nancial order gives nality it also oers peace of mind so you are not worrying that an ex may pop up and demand a share of your pension or spousal maintenance.

58Wizard’s Wander - Alderley Edge, National Trust. This is a perfect family friendly walk, with multiple paths, amazing views and a cafe for a treat afterwards.Every time we have been to the National Trust site in Alderley Edge for a walk we have always come across a new route or section of a path. Making this walk always interesting and fun to do.And when we found they had improved the wooden assault course within the woodland we were delighted.Nature Play Areas - There is a section in the woodland just near the start of the walk which is now full of brand new tree trunk stepping stones, totem poles to climb, balance beams and a large wooden den. My daughters enjoyed playing on this and made a great addition to the walk, it was a good test of their balance and movement skills. The Routes - At the start there is a map with a number of dierent routes signposted around the woodland. From a quick 1.5km route to a longer 3-4km route. The signs and paths are clearly marked but we always seem to wonder from one route onto another as they all interlink. Each route takes you past a point of interest. The “Miner’s Ramble” takes you to the old unused mine entrance. The “Donkey Trek” leads you down into the valley and then back up again with a big climb. The “Wizard Wonder” takes you to the famous, impressive view where you can look over the Cheshire plains. You can get some fantastic photos here or simple stop and take in the views with a snack.“Castle Rock” leads you to another Days Out & Meals Out reviewsJenny, daysoutandmealsout.combrilliant view point looking over Cheshire and a place to sit on some impressive rock formations. The paths are mostly well surfaced but some can be muddy after rainfall so suitable footwear is advisable in the winter months. Some paths include a rocky climb too so it’s not suitable for pushchairs or scooters. The Wizard Tearoom - Established in 2016, The Wizard Tearoom is a lovely, independent café nessled within the beautiful National Trust site. The building dates back to the 16th century. What’s better than a hot drink to warm your hands after a chilly walk or that cake you promised to your little legged walker if they nish the route. The tearoom provides only an outdoor setting. Between the trees is an area of picnic tables and benches. Some are under a substantial canopy sheltering you from the elements. They have very recently installed a row of 3 wooden pods to sit in. These are a real benet to the tearoom as are very cosy to sit inside. They serve some really interesting drinks, including Hot Toddies, Baileys Hot Chocolate, Hot Blackcurrant and Chai Latte. The cake displayed are outstanding. Yummy homemade brownies, apjacks and sticky ginger cake. They also have a savoury menu with homemade soup, sausage rolls, breakfast baps and Toasted Cheese Car Park - The car park is National Trust so this is free if you have membership or a few pounds if not. There are public toilets in the car park and an ice cream truck is usually parked up in the summer. You will nd picnic tables in a grassy area for enjoying your picnic or ice cream too.Top Info: Multi terrain walks. Brilliant Cheshire views. Lovely cafe. Picnic area. Nature Play Area. Plus, working alongside them gives us valuable insights into our strengths and weaknesses, spurring continuous growth and improvement.A Safety Net in Stormy Seas: Imagine being stranded in the middle of the ocean—it’s comforting to know there’s a life raft nearby. Similarly, in tough times, competitors can oer support instead of adding to the pressure. Building and maintaining good relationships ensures we have a safety net to fall back on when we need help or understanding. At the core, supporting your competitors isn’t about sacricing your own success—it’s about building a community where everyone thrives. Simple acts of kindness, like sharing their updates on social media or reaching out for a chat, can lay the groundwork for a mutually benecial relationship. After all, in the grand scheme of things, our competitors aren’t just rivals—they’re potential allies in our journey towards industry growth and excellence. So let’s embrace collaboration, celebrate each other’s victories, and pave the way for a brighter future together!

66This Standing Meditation is one of the most powerful ways to get your minds to slow down.Think of what our bodies are used to doing when we’re simply standing. We’re usually standing in line... looking at something... queuing…having an alert conversation. We very rarely stand and do nothing.Standing brings our bodies and minds into alertness. In this way, standing meditation is one of the quickest ways to bring ourselves into the present. It’s also an excellent method to recharge our battery when we feel low in energy. If you’ve never done standing meditation before, limit your practice to 5 minutes at a time until you become more accustomed to the process. Then, increase the time once you become familiar with it.Find a broom, a walking stick, a mop or something you can use to make sure you don’t lose your balance. The back of a chair will do in a pinch.Hold the top of your broom/stick/chair. Place your feet hip width apart.Look straight ahead. Close your eyes halfway, but not all the way.Tune in to your breathing for a few moments. Feel the lifting and falling of your belly. Pay attention to your lower stomach.Focus simply on the feeling of having your feet on the ground, and of breathing. If you nd it hard to focus, you can silently or quietly repeat Thich Nhat Hanh’s beloved meditative verse:Breathing in, I know that I am breathing in.Breathing out, I know that I am breathing out.(pause...)Allow any emotions to be in the room with you, but do not focus on them. When your mind wanders into thoughts and stories, gently and kindly bring it back to focusing on your breathing, and on the feeling and experience of your body, standing still. After 5 minutes, open your eyes and take a few deep breaths.Be gentle with yourself as you return to “real life”. You’ve slowed down more than you might think.5 Minute Standing Meditationby Mike HollandMind Being You

This past month has seen doctors being blocked in, ambulances not being able to get to the the front door, and other instances where people have been unable to leave the car park. 72Middlewich was a jigsaw of 100 pieces in my mind before coming to live here. During my last 30 years of living in France I had come to Middlewich to visit my family maybe once every two years, on average. I had been there enough though to appreciate the all the changes that had been made. The shops that had disappeared and others that had appeared. The new builds, housing estates that had been created, Pubs that had changed hands/names and beauty salons that had popped up in the high street where once there had been bakers and other local shops. I had also regularly walked lots of short sections of the canal. Sections of it, starting out from my parent’s house. I had almost always been accompanied and had ‘followed the leader’ appreciating the walk for its prettiness and originality compared to where I was living at the time, but not for what it fully represented for someone who lived here. Now, three months after moving in, I recognise other visitors to the area doing Girl About Middlewich To wnbyHelenwhat I had done. Christmas being a time when families congregate, the canal walk was a perfect spot for observing those who were visiting Middlewich and enjoying a guided tour of the canal tow path with their family, in preparation of a guilt free mince pie attack at 5pm. It reminded me of my previous walks here, never knowing where the passages to the right or left of the canal lead o to, no feeling of familiarity with the sights, sounds and smells or a feeling of belonging.Walking in an area that is new to me has always been essential. It’s series of dierent steps (no pun intended) that take me from the initial exploring and losing myself stage, all the way to knowing the best walk to do on the day, according to the weather conditions and the number of kms I feel I could cover. In between the two they’ll always be numerous other local walking experiences of course and each will have equal importance in their own way. It’s just my personal process of integration I guess and without it I can’t feel at home.My rst outing along the canal had me struck by the unfamiliar and acrid smell of something unrecognizable but that turned out to be coal burning in the stoves of the narrow boats moored up on the canal side. Not feeling condent enough to step o the beaten track this time though I kept myself to a chilly 30 minutes fast walk along the canal in one direction then 30 minutes back. It was a start.
