Health I am writing this article during lockdown in the Covid 19 pandemic It is such a worrying time for everyone People are worried about the virus itself people jobs and businesses have been affected schools are closed and exams are cancelled Our reflexology clinic along with many other local businesses is closed until the situation improves Who would have thought only a few weeks ago this is the situation we would be in Perhaps not surprisingly one negative effect of this is that people may be suffering from disturbed sleep or insomnia In recent days we have even seen some celebrities take to social media to say their sleep is affected Insomnia is one of the most common reasons people come to see me as reflexology can be so helpful in helping improve sleep Insomnia can bring with it fatigue poor concentration lack of energy irritability reduced performance at work and it can also put a strain on relationships At worst it can be dangerous with poor concentration leading to problems driving or operation machinery The amount of sleep we need also varies throughout our lives Adults need 7 9 hours per night children 9 13 hours and babies and toddlers 12 17 hours If you feel constantly tired during the day you probably need to increase the amount of sleep you are getting So what are the symptoms of insomnia The symptoms can vary between different people but can include difficulty getting to sleep waking up multiple times during the night lying awake at night waking up early and cannot get back to sleep still feeling tired after waking up feeling tired and irritable during the day and poor concentration due to being tired There is a useful sleep selfassessment on the NHS website which gives 6 you a sleep score and some useful self help tips The good news is there are lots of great tips you can do yourself to help improve your sleep Relax for at least an hour before going to bed Try reading meditation or having a bath Avoid watching television or looking at devices during this time Avoid a large meal late at night and drinking tea coffee or alcohol for 6 hours before bedtime Ensure your bed is comfortable your bedroom is dark quiet and a comfortable temperature Make sure you go to sleep and wake up at the same time each day Don t be tempted to sleep later is you have a poor night s sleep Try to exercise regularly but obviously within any current government rules So can reflexology help Reflexology can help to improve sleep There have been a number of studies done in various groups of people which have shown a significant difference to the quality of sleep obtained The clinic is very sadly closed at the moment so I cannot see any clients for reflexology treatments However with my clients with sleep issues I also teach them hand reflexology which they can easily do themselves at home to become part of their daily routine to help improve the quality of sleep I have some videos on my Facebook page Cheshire Clinical Reflexology demonstrating these techniques which anyone who is interested is welcome to have a look at and try and I really hope you can find them useful I send all my very best wishes to everyone to stay safe and healthy at this difficult time Karen Cheshire Clinical Reflexology

VE Day 75 Commemoration H olmes Chapel on VE Day 1945 The Second World War had been going on for six years since 1939 and the world had changed even for people in the relatively remote village of Holmes Chapel Many men and women had joined the services and left the area However unlike the First World War the community at home was very much involved in the war machine The wallpaper factory was now producing munitions which were stored at a Royal Army Ordnance Corps depot along Manor Lane There was an airfield at Cranage from which flying missions attacking enemy aircraft took place In Byley there was a factory where Wellington Bombers were built Troops had been billeted in the village evacuees were living with families American servicemen had stayed at The Hermitage and Sandiford Cottage Italian and German POWs had stayed at the Bull and Sandiford Cottage and people were subject to rationing growing their own food Even grass verges were ploughed up to Dig for Victory And then on May 7th 1945 reports came through on the wireless that the war in Europe was over and VE Day was declared for Tuesday May 8th Not many people are now alive who can remember that day in Holmes Chapel but we have learnt that it was a day of spontaneous celebration centred on the Good Companions Hotel which was on the site of Lovell Court in the centre of the village This was a brand new hotel only opened just before the war and had a large car park at the front This became the location for drinking and dancing well into the night A band played on a flat bed trailer which had been brought along There are reports of flags displayed around the village but sadly no photographs 28 have been found to confirm this No doubt it was more important to celebrate than take photographs Following a day of celebration apart from thanksgiving services and peals of bells it appears life went back to normal and people gradually adjusted to peace time although rationing continued and in fact became more severe in the years to come This may have influenced the Parish Council who decided not to support the Victory Celebrations planned for June 1946 proposed by the government Clearly for the village of Holmes Chapel one day of celebration was enough We would love to have included a photo of Holmes Chapel celebrating and maybe you have one in your album you could let us see H olmes Chapel had been busy making plans for the commemoration of the 75 years since VE Day but the coronavirus has resulted in the cancellation of most of the anticipated activities There will be no public gatherings and no street parties on May 8th unfortunately However it is hoped to release some of the history research which had been carried out to give people the background to how the village was involved in wartime activities and the VE Day celebrations One of the plans was to produce a map of the village and surroundings to show all the locations which were important during the war For example there was an aircraft assembly plant at Byley as well as an airfield Also the Victoria wallpaper works was converted into a munitions plant and there was a munitions store nearby It is still planned to have the maps produced by early May and we hope to find a way of making them available to the community in a

Page 29

safe way Many of the locations shown on the map are within walking distance of the village centre so this may provide added interest for people carrying out their daily exercise around the village if we are still locked down by then By way of example three of the locations shown on the map are listed below with the associated story of the time 1 The Good Companions Hotel opened on Wednesday 15th March 1939 the day after The Bull s Head closed it s doors as a public house Being owned by the same brewery the license was transferred between the two The demolition of the Bull s Head in a road widening scheme was postponed by the war and it carried on as a boarding house for a number of years At one time it even housed Italian POWs The Good Companions situated on the site of Lovell Court in the village centre was advertised as a country hotel It was an imposing building set back from the main road with a large car park to the front During the Second World War numerous social events were organised within the building On VE Day in the evening everyone congregated in the car park where there was dancing and drinking with a band playing on the back of a farm flat bed trailer 2 Victoria Wallpaper Works and Munitions Store A wallpaper works now Fads has been on this site since 1911 At the start of the Second World War as part of the war effort wallpaper manufacture ceased and the factory was employed in packing shells fabricating Rolls Royce engine parts and window paper foil which was dropped as strips to confuse enemy radar The wallpaper works were also the headquarters for the Holmes Chapel troop of the Home Guards One of their tasks was to protect the Railway Viaduct from sabotage This was regarded as a far from pleasant duty made all the more difficult by the narrow space between the track and the parapet which meant the guard on duty was in some danger when a train passed through Across the railway line from the Victoria Works was a RAOC Royal Army Ordnance Corps Depot The land was originally part of Manor Farm but on 27th September 1939 24 days after the start of the War the War Department commandeered the land for a War Mobilisation Store and a small number of soldiers were based there 3 Sandiford Cottage Located where the Fire Station is now Sandiford Cottage was built in the 19th Century In the 1920s it was the home of Ministers in the Church of England until the new Vicarage on London Road was built in 1930 As war approached it became the HQ for the WVS Women s Voluntary Service and TocH During the Second World War it was requisitioned by the government and used as a billet for troops both British and American some were in tents in the extensive grounds and later a hostel for German prisoners of war After the requisition the WVS moved to a house on Victoria Avenue Holmes Chapel U3A Local History Group 29

FOGS A t present Government advice about social distancing and self isolation means that FOGS working parties cannot take place It s fortunate therefore that in March there was a double celebration for FOGS members The Campaigns Award 2019 from the Best Kept Cheshire Competition was mounted on the bridge wall and the plaque in memory of our first chairman Cyril Caulkin was unveiled Both events had already been postponed in January and February because of stormy weather But now we have time to reflect on some of the successes of our volunteer group and also to plan for future activities After FOGS was founded in 2013 one of the first improvements to Goostrey Railway Station was the refurbishment of the passenger shelter on the Crewe platform This allowed Becky Cowell deputy headteacher at Goostrey Community Primary School to mount displays of pupils work The first exhibition was entitled Cold One window of the building displayed words such as ICE SNOW and FROST in 32 huge letters Another had descriptions of Ice Age animals which made the reader shiver For example The deserted icy plain The giant glacier gleaming in the distance like the end of the earth A huge circle of mammoths protecting their vulnerable young Glittering snow like magic dust Inside the waiting room passengers were greeted by huge models of three penguins and a polar bear in front of a wall covered with elaborate decorations in cold colours The whole display was particularly effective at night when illuminated by the station lights Subsequent displays have included Rainbows Orang Utans Going Places the Owl and the Pussy Cat Titanic the Queen s 90th birthday and Remembrance Each has transformed the shelter and they have been greatly appreciated by passengers and parents Comments have included What a lovely display to cheer us up on our rainy train trip home to Buckinghamshire Great use of this space Goostrey Primary school has some very talented pupils

I wish our school did something like this I regularly walk the dog via the station now to see the artwork In addition the exhibitions helped the school to achieve Artsmark Gold and Rainbows was part of an Art Trail during Goosfest 2014 Then in 2016 FOGS received the Art Award from the Cheshire Best Kept Station competition and in 2017 the group was shortlisted in a national competition Members of FOGS have two plans for the future that relate to the school s artwork First they look forward to the displays resuming when our lives return to normal Second the shelter again needs repairs to the roof and to the woodwork so as in 2013 pressure on the rail authorities is required For more information please contact Dave Roberts vice chair on sharp shooter talktalk net Friends of Goostrey Station Reflexology reduces stress improves well being and sleep these effects may be beneficial in STRESS ANXIETY SLEEP PROBLEMS MIGRAINE PREGNANCY ENHANCING FERTILITY BACK SHOULDER NECK PAIN LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE A local clinic in Goostrey run by Karen Wilson Pharmacist with over 20 years NHS experience t 07969 308791 info cheshireclinicalreflexology co uk www cheshireclinicalreflexology co uk 33

Fitness H ealthy at Home When the Corona virus news first started filtering through and things started to get a little more serious in the UK as a small business owner we were filled with dread and fear over what the coming months would bring It s quite clear that we re looking forward to tough times That said I ve committed myself to using this time to slow life down a little To focus on us our family our wellness and the future of the business You too can use this time to work on you We have written a 15 page Healthy at Home eBook which guides you through these steps in detail explaining the importance of each step along with easily implemented tasks You can find this on our website www jwchealthandfitness com Below you will find an overview to help you on your way Exercise The most common barrier to people achieving their lifestyle fitness or physique goals is a lack of time Suddenly we have time so why not use this this time to not only manage or maintain our health but in fact to improve it As discussed briefly previously exercise is a fantastic tool in combating stress and other mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety Exercise is also going to be key in controlling your body composition body 38 fat muscle Through this period of closure we have created an online space to allow our members keep up their hard work and we would like to invite you to also benefit from this We offer Facebook Live workouts every morning at 8 00am www facebook com jwchealthandfitness and have an online members area on our website currently accessible to all For some this may just be an opportunity to increase their daily steps Nutrition The principles of nutrition are very simple We must ensure that we consume enough food to feel energised whilst maintaining a healthy weight If you wish to reduce weight we must reduce our overall consumption by approximately 10 20 whilst moving more Our meals should be built up or highquality nutrient dense foods with a variety of colours and a source of protein in every meal Final Words No matter how tough these times are and they are going to be tough stay positive look after those around you and use this time as an opportunity to grow Improve your fitness learn to cook spend more time with your children educate yourself I hope you and your loved ones stay safe and healthy We love you all Jack JWC Health Fitness

Lockdown technology S tay in touch If you can t meet loved ones or colleagues face to face how can tech help you feel less isolated or conduct effective business meetings Telephone Don t knock it it works And email Facebook etc still exist too WhatsApp This is a popular app for smartphones that lets you text chat voice chat or have video calls so you can see the person you re talking to Don t underestimate how much better you feel after seeing peoples faces when you re cut off from each other You can use it on a computer too but maddeningly you need a smartphone to set it up in the first place Zoom Not just an alternative to WhatsApp this is a video conference tool that lets you have family get togethers business meetings and even lessons remotely Unless you intend to discuss state secrets its weak security isn t an issue but do read Zoom s advice and don t publish meeting links on public places like Facebook Most laptops have built in webcams and microphones but check yours work before the meeting Desktop PCs need a plug in webcam Educating Charlie With the kids at home all the time it is tempting to stick them in front of a screen for long times but please don t use TV and tablets as baby sitters Kids need real people to interact with and physical 44 interaction with the real world So get them cooking painting doing woodwork growing plants in pots or the garden anything where they can get the feel of materials and understand how gooey bendy stickable and strong they are yup stuff will get broken it s the only way to learn What about the tech Well Facebook and other sites are full of suggestions for activities at the moment Be inspired The BBC and other broadcasters are presenting a rich choice of educational programmes Take full advantage of them But again just looking at a screen isn t enough People learn best when another person engages with their learning so stop the broadcast every ten minutes or so to ask questions and check your kids understanding Record programs so you can go back later if you need to And follow up with activities that build on what they have just learnt Kids learn by doing But kids can get techie too Get them writing games using Scratch and they ll learn to program without realising it If you need cheap computers for the family look at the Raspberry Pi There is more on my website goggleboxtech uk Andrew GoogleboxTech

Let s talk legal I s your paperwork in order If there is one thing that the last few months has taught me then it is to cherish our family and friends and hold them close Whilst that may not have been physically possible for a while most of us have learnt new skills like Skype and FaceTime to keep in touch with loved ones The private client solicitors at Evolve Family Law have also had to be flexible to make sure that your paperwork is in order It has been a whole new world Normally if I get a phone call from someone wanting a new Will or Lasting Power of Attorney it is swiftly followed by you visiting the office or if necessary a home or care home visit None of that has been possible over the last few weeks So we at Evolve Family Law have had to adapt just like everyone else Now it is Skype and FaceTime legal appointments to discuss your Will and Lasting Power of Attorney or other paperwork requirements such as your relationship or cohabitation agreement The lawyers at Evolve Family Law have really missed our commute to the office and our colleagues and clients However 50 what Covid 19 has taught us is that awful times bring out the very best in people Who would have thought a few short months ago that neighbours would be witnessing the signature of a new Will Lasting Power of Attorney or relationship agreement over the bonnet of a car to make sure legal requirements were met whilst practising social distancing I have also enjoyed the humour that has flourished in the face of adversity It was great to be told that there is only so many times that you can spring clean the house or reposition the tools in the garage before thoughts turned to updating your Will or putting a Lasting Power of Attorney in place All of us have been touched by Covid 19 in one way or other As a private client probate and estate planning solicitor I have seen just how devastating Covid 19 can be to a family and to a community However I remain amazed by people s resilience in the face of adversity and their ability to offer words of comfort and thanks So my message is thank you Evolve Family Law

Moosletter W e are tenant farmers on the Rode Hall Estate nr Congleton Cheshire Tom is second generation following on from his father Philip who came to the estate back in 1968 milking just 35 cows In 2012 Tom myself took over the business with our son Jack under the company name of Halton Farms Ltd Tom especially has always been very passionate about selling his milk directly to people especially via doorstep delivery In 2016 we ventured into selling raw milk via a vending machine at the farm which took off really quickly and this inspired Tom even more to start pasteurising and get our milk directly to the customer So in March this year our dreams came true and we set up a very small on farm pasteurizing plant We partnered with The Little Doorstep Dairy who specialise in delivering milk to the doorstep They have a team of experienced Milkmen with over 80 years experience in retail and doorstep delivery To find out more about the range of products they can deliver directly to your doorstep please log onto thelittledoorstepdairy co uk or email them thelittledoorstepdairy gmail com When you buy your milk from Halton Farms you are purchasing from an award winning farm with 1st class animal welfare and passion for animals the countryside people and the beautiful nutritious product 54 called milk The milk is produced at CW12 so it only makes one journey that s to your house We pasteurize and prepare the milk whilst milking our cows and the finished product has left our farm for your doorstep within 12 hours to guarantee the freshest milk we can get We truly believe milk tastes better in glass rather than plastic We did the taste test many years ago and we could tell the difference Try it for yourself by placing 1 pint of milk in a glass bottle and 1 pint of milk in a plastic container and leave in the fridge for 3 days Now remember our milk is nonhomogenized so you will have to shake before tasting If that hasn t persuaded you to move away from plastic then please look at a website called The Ocean Is Everybody s Business and hopefully that will change your mind Another tip if you buy your milk in pint glass bottles consider 1 Litre glass bottles 1 Litre is the equivalent of approx 1 76 pints By doing this you could Free up some fridge space Save on foil lids as the 1 Litre bottles have a nice black twist reusable lid Save on bottle handling washing Karen Tom Halton find out more at haltonfarms com

It s 5 o clock somewhere A t the risk of repeating pretty much everyone else we re living through history now in these unprecedented times we have to knuckle down make the most of what we ve got And to be fair most of us are pretty lucky in that we have rooves over our heads food on our plates To those in our community who are going to work to either care clean or support the rest of us thank you so very much please look after yourselves too I m going to give you a few simple storecupboard cocktails that you can make at home without the need for fancy kit or unnecessary trips to the shops Hopefully you ll be able to enjoy them in your gardens or over video calling services with your friends However you choose to enjoy them half the fun is in the experimentation so don t be afraid to try something new Most cocktails should have a balanced taste to them not too sour or sweet bitter or dry so try not to overdo things put too many elements in As always please start with a good quality spirit be it gin vodka whiskey brandy or rum If you go for flavoured spirits be mindful of what you combine with them or you ll lose their flavours I d also reign back on the 21yo single malt but if it s all you ve got then crack on Some other stuff you ll need is as follows If you have a cocktail shaker then great but if not a good quality thick jam jar or small kilner jar works just as well a sieve a spoon a sharp knife and glasses of various sizes ice Breakfast Gin 3 shots of gin 1 shot of lemon juice 1 shot sugar syrup equal amounts of sugar water boiled to make a syrup a good heaped teaspoon of blackberry jam strawberry or raspberry work just as well Put a load of ice into 56 your shaker jar add all the ingredients shake well until the jam s dissolved Fill your glass with ice sieve your mix into it Garnish with some frozen berries or a twist of lemon A flavoured gin would go well with this to compliment the jam Rum caipirinha 2 shots white rum 2 limes 1 tbsp of castor sugar Cut 1 lime into wedges add to the jar along with the sugar Muddle the limes as much as you can until you ve got as much juice as possible out of them You can use a pestle mortar if you don t have a muddle Discard the lime skin add the rum to the lime syrup pour into a glass full of ice Garnish with more lime wedges Blueberry mojito 15g blueberries 1 lemon 2tsp sugar 1 mint sprig 2 shots white rum 4 shots sparkling water Slice the lemon add the blueberries sugar muddle Take the leaves from the mint sprig bruise them Add into the sugar fruit syrup with loads of ice Add the rum water stir well Raspberry mule 2 shots vodka 1 shot lime juice 2tbs raspberry jam ginger beer Put all ingredients in a shaker jar with a couple of cubes of ice Shake well until the jam s well mixed in Pour into a glass over ice top up with ginger beer or ginger ale All of these recipes can be tweaked according to your taste by adding more or less sugar or fruit or spirits but are easy to make can be done in minutes Until next time enjoy stay safe see you on the other side Rich The Beer Emporium
