4Ka xWELCOME to the May edition of The villages Mag, this edition is bumper and has been a pleasure to put together. We have an update on what the boxing club has been up too, from my own personal experience the value of the boxing club in our community is exceptional. The work they do with young people is so important and I think Kevin and Scott from the club both need regular recognition – for what it is worth, it is a big thank you from me.Along the same theme of supporting young people, I had the opportunity to visit Higher Farm in Byley and talk to the manager there about their programme to provide an alternative provision to young people who have disengaged from mainstream school.Other articles in this edition include an update from the Holmes Chapel Partnership, I have now joined as a committee member and one of the reasons for me joining is so The Villages Mag can provide support to the organising where we can and help them promote the wonderful work they do for our community. We also have fitness from Jack and Rich from the Bottle Bank talks coffee, plus much more.I also have another request, although we are a very safe village there are times when we do sometimes experience anti-social behaviour, you may not want to intervene directly and that is understandable, however it is really important you report incidents to the police – if it is not an emergency call 101 and call 999 in an emergency. The police need to know what is going on if there is an increase in ASB – then they can work with other agencies and parents to put support in place, we don’t want to criminalise young people and just building agency support can change their futures.Whatever May has in store for you, I hope you get to relax and enjoy some quality time with friends and familyIn this editionCoffee... part 4 8Holmes Chapel Partnership update... 12Holmes Chapel Boxing Club 16Fitness... 8Coffee...HAVING delved into the history of coffee and its place in creating modern society, now’s the time to look at the beans themselves. You may recall I touched briefly on these at the start of our coffee journey with the 2 main varieties being Robusta and Arabica, so let’s look at the similarities and differences between the 2 varieties before I draw a close to this mini-series next month with the different types of making coffee. Both varieties grow beans after several years, both need lots of water, shade and warmth to grow. Arabica does better at higher altitudes, c. 1500m, but both can grow at sea-level and higher! To get the coffee bean from the fruit, it’s picked after 8-11 months, then processed to get the bean, dried, cleaned and graded before heading to the roasters.Arabica first, as this is what you’re most likely to have heard touted by whatever coffee purveyor you’re in. This hybrid variety is thought to have occurred somewhere between a half and a million years ago, but since nobody was around at that time to check, we’ll have to accept that rather broad guesstimate. Like all coffee varieties, it takes several years for a coffee plant to start to bear fruit, with a plants most productive seasons being when it’s 7-20 years old. Many specialist growers only try to pick the ripest of coffee cherries, when they’re at their reddest, rather than including the greener, under-ripe ones. It’s this focus on flavour, and not economies of scale, that gives Arabica coffee its magic, allowing the grower to showcase its terroir and the aromatic contents of their beans.Out of the 2 commercial varieties, it’s Robusta that is the easiest to grow. Its beans contain more caffeine than Arabica beans, less sugar and a lower susceptibility to disease and pests. It can also be grown successfully at lower altitudes meaning the plantations can be more easily mechanised. These reasons, in addition to the yield per plant being higher, means Robusta is a great choice if you’re trying to get a cheap cup of coffee – more beans at a lower cost per acre. So why isn’t Robusta talked about as much as Arabica? Well, it’s about flavour. All of those commercial cost/yield benefits result in a bean that has more bitterness, less natural sugar, more woody, astringent notes and less vibrant fruity flavours. It’s not great when trying to showcase your plantation.Robusta and Arabica each perform different roles in making a good/consistent/cheap/tasty/full-bodied cup of coffee, and the big coffee brands spend an absolute fortune in making sure the last cup of their coffee tastes just like the next one. If we, as consumers, want something that is hot, coffee-ish and cheap, then relying on the Robusta bean in instant form is the way forward. If you prefer something a little different, that is arguably truer to how coffee should taste, then Arabica should be your tipple of choice.Unitl next time...Rich, The Beer Emporium Bottle Bank

Our ‘superhero’ themed walk last year was extremely well attended by local school children, teachers, residents, councillors, and the media. This year we have invited the Police and Crime Commissioner to join us as we believe Cheshire East Council is not doing enough to support our campaign for ‘Safer Walking Routes to School’. We have no 20mph speed restrictions on any of our main roads in Holmes Chapel, no traffic calming measures and very little speed related signage. We would love for even more residents and school children to join us for the Walk to School event. Our theme this year is ‘Defeat Danger’ and, in recognition of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we are asking children taking part to dress in red, white and blue. Full details including a map of the Walk to School routes to Hermitage and Middlewich Road primary schools can be found at www.hcpartnership.org.uk. If you would like to take part in the walk or help as a marshal on the day, please contact projects@hcpartnership.org.uk. (Primary school children in the village will be provided with full details via their schools.)Speedwatch Returns!OUR Community Speedwatch team is returning to the streets this Spring. A review of our first year of activity was held with members of Community Speedwatch, the Parish Council and PCSO Ade Chadwick earlier this year. While we remain frustrated by ongoing speeding issues in the village and a lack of Cheshire East Council support, the presence of our team has a calming effect on village traffic and the data we collect is valuable evidence for our campaign for safer roads. Going forward, Community Speedwatch will be focusing on Middlewich Road where speeding vehicles and the sizeable Anwyl Homes construction site pose ongoing risks to pedestrians. We would love to be able to cover more of the village but to achieve this we need more volunteers. If you can spare just one hour, either per week or per fortnight, to be part of the Speedwatch team, please get in touch at projects@hcpartnership.org.uk. Full training will be provided by our PSCO and the Speedwatch team has received some great feedback from local residents when out on duty.Holmes Chapel Partnershipwww.hcpartnership.org.uk

16HC Boxing Club...IT’S been just over a year since we moved into the new gym at Station Yard. Since then, and as lockdown eased, it has been bonkers. We created the club as a community group, run by volunteers, for the young people of Holmes Chapel and surrounding areas. Promoting structure, healthy lifestyles and an alternative to anti social behaviourSince moving to Station Yard, in such a visible position in the village, we have been able to do so much more. Our core purpose will always remain, we are a volunteer run club that adds value to the community. As an England Boxing affiliated club, we provide amazing opportunities for fitness, participation and competition but we have spent extra time making the most of the amazing facilities we have for wider community groups and engagement.• BoxingTots (Ages 3-7). We are not an early years education provider, but BoxingTots are. An amazing company that teaches boxing through play and allows us to open the gym for toddlers after so many request. Information at boxingtots.com• Cadets (Age 8-10). We have partnered with GB Boxing Awards to deliver an accredited recreational boxing practice as part of a structured awards programme. It’s great to see the priden when a young member earns their next certificate and medal• Junior (10-15) and Senior (16-39) remains at the core. Boxing training and competition for 10-17 year olds and competitive boxing for 18-39 (40th year is that last year of competition as governed by England Boxing)• Boxing Fitness for adults. Fighting Fit classes and the Saturday open gym allow us to open the gym for community use and put members aged 16-55 through their paces• Over 55s. Low impact boxing training every Tuesday• Ladies that Punch. Hugely popular ladies boxing fitness class• Girls Class. Female only training for 11-18 year oldsWe get amazing feedback from members and parents across the different competition and community classes. Boxing is a unique sport that is often misunderstood. This is especially true of the Girls Class and Ladies that Punch and we are keen to grow this. Over the next few weeks we plan to run an open event, inviting girls and ladies to come in and have a look at the gym, meet the coaches and have a go at hitting the pads. Wew have been fortunate to receive funding and support from Always for this; Kerry Chalk and Zoe Brownlow are working through plans and we will announce the date and information as soon as possibleHolmes Chapel Boxing Clubboxingchapel.co.uk

The ‘F’ wordTHE word ‘Fail’ or ‘Failure’ often holds negative connotations for people, and I can understand why you may see it that way. But I fundamentally disagree, hear me out…It all comes down to how we perceive the word. If we allow a failed attempt at something to deter us from future attempts, then sure, you’ve allowed that experience define you. Whether in fitness, business, relationships or any other area of life, if you’re looking to grow and progress, failures are inevitable. But personally, I believe that we need to accept, or come to expect failures in life. No, we do not let it deter us, no, on the contrary. We should see each and every failed attempt at achieving a goal as a learning curve. Another step closer to success. We should dissect every part of that particular journey to determine where we took the wrong turn, at what point we lost motivation or why we didn’t see it all the way through. Being bold enough to scrutinise your previous attempts will give you the best possible chance of avoiding those mistakes or barriers in the future. Being bold enough to embrace a failure but keep pushing forward will determine just how truly successful you can be! I believe so strongly that this mindset shift would help you, that I recently hosted a free seminar on the topic. You can gain full access to this by contacting us. 22Our local heritage...JUBILEE Celebrations in 1897. We are all looking forward to the celebration of the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in June this year but this won’t be the first major jubilee celebrated in the village. In 1897 Queen Victoria reached her Diamond Jubilee and these were reported by the vicar, Reverend Barnacle, in the Parish Magazine. On the day, the village all assembled at the school in Macclesfield Road where the children and several adults received Jubilee Medals. A procession with a band then marched through the village along Chester Road and back along Middlewich Road to the village square (in front of what is now Barclay’s Bank) where the National Anthem was sung. All then marched back to the school where a large tent was erected and a ‘sumptuous tea’ was enjoyed by around 1000 residents of Holmes Chapel, Cotton and Cranage. There was entertainment and games and in the interval the children were assembled and ‘regaled with oranges and a large quantity of nuts’. The events continued into the evening ‘and at ten o’clock all was brought to a close’.A great feature of the day was the decoration of the village. All the shops were shut and it was a general holiday with flags and bunting everywhere. Many of the shops and pubs were decorated with evergreens and flowers and the Bulls Head was lit up with oil lamps ‘which greatly added to the beauty’. A committee had been set up to organise all the events and money had been collected amounting to £45.13s.6d and in the days afterwards the expenses were found to be £46.6s.8d which left a ‘balance of 13s on the wrong side’. It was good to read that ‘the Committee immediately paid the outstanding sum so as to clear the matter’Such Jubilee activities were carried out in villages all over the country and it was a day of great celebration. Although we do not have a photograph of the Holmes Chapel events the image below of Royston, Hertfordshire shows similar activities taking place. To celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee the u3a Local History Group has prepared a display for the windows of the Co-op store on London Road, focusing on the events of February 1952 and June 1953. The group has also collected information, images and memories of what the village centre was like 70 years ago for “memory pages” which will be on display in individual shops from mid May to mid June. How times have changed!Holmes Chapel U3A Local History Group

32TVM meets...BACK in October of last year, we ran an article about the history of Holmes Chapel Music Society and how they were getting ready for their 50th anniversary year. With the concerts well underway I caught up with Sue Hudson, founder of the Society to find out how the celebrations are going.Fifty years ago a small group of enthusiastic classical music lovers started Holmes Chapel Music Society; little did we think that in 2022 we would be celebrating our golden jubilee! In 1972 Holmes Chapel was a relatively small village with very few clubs so a new society sparked immediate interest, especially as we decided in our first season to promote Foden’s Brass Band. 450 people came to hear them and it made a big enough profit for us to continue the next season. Since then hundreds of top classical musicians have performed for the society. Every single day, names of musicians who have been to Holmes Chapel feature on Classic FM or Radio 3. Musicians know that Holmes Chapel is an important venue for classical music! Our celebratory year began in October at our new venue, the Clonter Opera Theatre with an afternoon start time of 3pm. We were hoping that after nearly two years of Covid restrictions when no concerts could be held, our loyal members would return to support us at a different venue and a different time. Our members did not disappoint and audiences have averaged a pleasing 150. From October to March we had seven concerts ranging from a wind quintet, two string quartets, one with a pianist, and the other with a Clarinettist, a mixed ensemble of strings and wind and a violinist with his accompanist. For our Christmas concert the Budapest Café Orchestra attracted over 250. Perhaps the most satisfying concert was when eight very talented young musicians from Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College, were given the opportunity to perform to our knowledgeable and discerning audience and inspired us all by their very high standard of playing. There are three more concerts this season:-19th March, Martin Roscoe, one of our Vice-Presidents returns to give a piano recital. 2nd April the Mithras Piano Trio, who are BBC New Generation Artistes Finally, our biggest concert of the year on May 21st is to be given by Sir Mark Elder and 10 principal musicians from the world famous Hallé Orchestra. The programme will include the “Carnival of the Animals” by Saint-Saëns with the amusing poems by Ogden Nash describing each animal, narrated by Sir Mark Elder. Please note, this concert starts at 8.00pm at Clonter. We expect this concert to be a sell-out so strongly advise you to book your tickets now. These can be bought on-line at www.themusicsociety.org.uk or by visiting the Print Room shop in Holmes Chapel or by phoning Jane Perrins on 01477549682.After 50 years some committee members feel they can no longer continue and unfortunately there are no volunteers to replace them despite a large number of new comers to Holmes Chapel. Although this will be Holmes Chapel Music Society’s last season there are plans to continue a series of Chamber Music Concerts at Clonter Opera next season. Details will be available on Clonter’s website in due course.KatyFor more information on concerts, tickets or supporting the music society please visitwww.themusicsociety.org.uk

TVM meets...TREE surgery. Can’t anyone do that? How hard can it be if you’ve got a ladder and a chain saw? It was a question I put to Oliver Turnbull, the owner of OJT Tree Services, understandably I knew he would have strong views on the subject.I find people hacking at trees worrying for a number of reasons, notwithstanding the obvious dangers and risks involved with tree work, a cut is not just a cut. How a tree’s branches or limbs are pruned or trimmed has consequences for the whole tree. For myself, being a tree surgeon doesn’t just involve the proper felling or pruning of trees, it’s a whole field of knowledge involving tree care, planting, disease/decay management, root removal and stump grinding. When undertaking works we consider it important to recognise that trees and humans share similar physical characteristics.Arboriculture is a science, Arborists are called tree surgeons because their business bears a resemblance to how a doctor, or surgeon, work on people. They diagnose, treat and operate to heal or prolong life. Trees are living organisms. Both people and trees stand upright with a crown on top and limbs stemming from a central trunk. In addition, the tubular branching pattern of our lungs resembles the root system of many trees. Both are mostly water, sharing similar physical characteristics, but every person and every tree is unique. And just as surgery on humans involves recognising and diagnosing diseases and how to treat them, a qualified arboriculturist has to apply those same skills to their patients using their knowledge and experience - without the benefit of their patient being able to talk to them. There is evidence that trees communicate with each other, store memories and respond to attacks. Sadly, like us, they also suffer from stress and disease. So cutting into any part of a tree needs to be just as informed, considered and be precise. Incorrect surgery can be detrimental to the health of a tree and therefore compromise its regeneration and even its longevity because improperly pruned trees are unable to heal themselves.Professionally trained and qualified tree surgeons use methods and practices conforming to the natural physiological processes of the tree. A tree that has suffered at the hands of someone without this knowledge will manifest signs of stress which an experienced and expert tree surgeon will immediately recognise. So, the next time you look at the trees around your home, and think I have a chainsaw and a ladder, ask yourself first “do I have the knowledge?”, if you don’t, put the chain saw away and call a professional. 44Holmes Chapel Parish Council ‘Plants a Tree for the Jubilee’HOLMES Chapel Parish Council were delighted to take part in the ‘The Queen’s Green Canopy’ by planting a tree in the Sutton Oaks, a central part of the village of Holmes Chapel. The tree planted is a “Carpinus betulus pyramidalis” (a columnar form of the hornbeam) which is grown mainly for its uniform shape and autumn colour and is an upright form of the native hornbeam. It was awarded the Award of Garden Merit by the RHS in 2002. A plaque marking the occasion was installed at the same time. The Parish Council were delighted to be joined for this ceremonial occasion by representatives from the three local schools, community groups and churches, and our Ward Member Cllr Les Gilbert, who each helped to plant this special tree. The Chairman of the Parish Council, Cllr Chris Jackson opened the ceremony by saying; “We are pleased to be taking part in creating the Queen’s Green Canopy. On behalf of Holmes Chapel, we wish Her Majesty good health and look forward to the celebrations in June on the anniversary of her coronation.”We hope this tree will flourish and be a long-lasting testimony to the dedication and commitment of Her Majesty the Queen in serving this country for the past 70 years.Grateful thanks to Alan Bethell, who planted the tree for us at no cost, for the benefit of the community Annual Parish Meeting 2022ON 22nd March 2022, Holmes Chapel Parish Council held our Annual Parish Meeting. 48Technology tips...YOU’VE Got Mail. “Ker-pling!” A melodious chime alerts you to an incoming email, and your heartbeat quickens. Someone has thought about you. Someone has a message for you. You interrupt what you’re doing to check your inbox, and all too often, it’s just an advert, a Facebook notification, or worse, a scam. Meanwhile, an important reminder stays unnoticed, buried under a mountain of dross. Yet, despite other forms of messaging coming to the fore such as texts, WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram, email remains an important form of communication, especially for longer content. So let’s take a moment to tame the Inbox.Firstly, how do you access your email – using webmail in an Internet browser, or a dedicated email program? My preference is for a proper program like eM Client or Thunderbird. They let you access all your email addresses in one place and are devoid of adverts. On the other hand, Gmail probably works best in the environment it was designed for, the web.Now let’s get organised! The secret to an uncluttered inbox is folders. You already know about your Inbox, Sent Items and Spam or Junk folders, but to add your own, just right-click the Inbox folder over at the left and choose New Folder or Add Folder (depending on service or email program). Create a folder for each category that makes sense to you. For example Family, Work and Bills. If you’re organising a holiday or moving house, have a folder for those projects too, to keep all the messages on one subject together. Once you’ve read or replied to an email, move it into a folder and you’ll soon be nailing that inbox. Right-click the message in the list and pointing to Move To… or similar.Gmail is slightly different, in that instead of folders, it has labels. You assign labels to messages to categorise them and can view just the emails in one (or more) category. If all that sounds like a lot of faff, don’t forget that computers are all about automation. All good email programs (so not Windows Mail, then) and most webmail services let you define rules to determine what happens to incoming messages. They may be called filters or actions. Unwanted messages can be deleted, important ones flagged and messages from certain addresses moved to the relevant folder. That’s great for all those advertising circulars and Facebook notifications, so they don’t flood your Inbox and make you miss something urgent. Finally, often overlooked are your Contacts or Address Book. If you use an online service like Google (if you use Android) or iCloud (Apple), together with a good email program, you can share all your contacts between addresses and make any updates just once. If you’ve ever been faced a five addresses for one person, not knowing which is the current one, you’ll realise that is worth its weight in gold!TIP: Why not create a signature with your name and contact details? It will be automatically added to every email you send, saving you time.Andrewgoggleboxtech.uk

Priding themselves on the quality of their craftsmanship they can make your furniture in any style and absolutely any colour finish.I asked what trends we can expect to see in kitchen design for 2022/2023.“The organic feel of soft curves, luxurious textures and greens of all shades will dominate kitchen design for the foreseeable”, Said Daniel from Kingston’s head office in Congleton, “Beautiful materials used in innovative ways with clean lines make for timeless styles. Function is increasingly important in modern kitchens so expect to see boiling water taps and cleverly integrated power sources as standard. Feature sinks are also a growing trend with striking styles in black, granite and copper appearing.”Daniel Kingston is a time served and highly skilled draftsperson and kitchen/bedroom designer with over 20 years’ experience. He brings a passion for perfection and a great eye for detail.“We are able to extract the absolute best from the space we see in a client’s home. 54Let’s talk legal...THE Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020 has reformed divorce law in England and Wales with the introduction of no fault divorce.Under previous divorce law, you had to petition for divorce by saying that your marriage had irretrievably broken down and cite one of five facts, such as adultery or unreasonable behaviour. Saying that your husband or wife had committed adultery or behaved unreasonably could sometimes make it harder for a couple to separate amicably and to agree on childcare arrangements or a financial settlement. No Fault DivorceIn April 2022 no fault divorce law was introduced. You can now apply for a divorce by providing a statement of irretrievable breakdown of your marriage. The divorce application can be made by one spouse or can be a joint divorce application by both of you. There are only very limited ways that a no fault divorce application can be opposed.New Divorce TerminologyInstead of the divorce proceedings being finalised with the pronouncement of decree absolute, the new terminology includes the ‘final divorce Order’ concluding the divorce proceedings. No Fault Divorce TimescalesCourt rules mean that it takes six months to get a no fault divorce. It will not be necessary to attend a Court hearing to obtain your divorce but you may need to apply to Court for a child arrangement order if you cannot reach an agreement with your husband or wife over the parenting arrangements for your children. If you cannot reach a financial settlement then you may need to ask the Court to decide how your assets should be divided and make a financial Court order.Financial Settlements and No Fault Divorce Although the divorce process has been simplified it is still vital to obtain a financial Court order during the divorce Court process, either by agreement or by starting financial Court proceedings. That is because without a financial Court order in place confirming the agreement you have reached, or a Court ordered financial settlement, you risk your husband or wife asking for additional money or a share in the family business or your pension at a later date. A financial Court order therefore gives financial security and accordingly it is a pretty essential part of the divorce process as it gives you peace of mind so you can move on with confidence into the next chapter of your life. Accompanied by their leaders, they had travelled by train over the viaduct high above the Dane valley. Inside the restored Victorian station building on platform one, Debbie had prepared an exciting print workshop. ‘They did amazing work making bird prints’ she said. ‘I could hardly believe that all the girls were under 7 years old.’ The children made good use of the tables and chairs that were generously donated by the Shopfitting Warehouse and the Cygnet Club, Congleton. FOGS members are looking forward to improving the facilities further using a significant grant from the Community Fund of the National Lottery Award for All. Beavers and Cubs from Goostrey have already enjoyed workshops at the new not-for-profit studio. There’s a car park at the station, but for a greener option participants can walk, cycle or travel by train. If you’re interested in attending a workshop or in bringing a group to Goostrey Art Studio, please contact Debbie Goldsmith on deborahgoldsmith@me.comFriends of Goostrey StationFoGS meet every second Sunday of the month at the Station from 10am to 1pm. 60TVM meets... Higher Farm I arrive early for my appointment with Phoebe, riding school and education manager of Higher Farm, equestrian centre and livery on Byley Lane, Byley. I am greeted by a young person who is expertly grooming a horse, and we get chatting. We talk about their past and they admit school was a struggle; they had been moved around because of behaviour and other personal issues. About 12 months ago, they had the opportunity to come for riding lessons and then Higher Farm took them on full time, giving them the opportunity to learn in a non-formal educational environment, not only the expected subjects of English and Maths she is also taking an equestrian qualification too. I must be really careful because I don’t want to identify the young person – that’s why I have been vague – however, I can honestly say this individual clearly has a glow about them. They tell me that in the past they would have never chatted to someone like this, but their confidence is growing and they feel respected and valued at Higher Farm.Phoebe arrives and before we make our way into the office, she helps the young person onto the horse so they can head off for a hack. It is clear there is a bond between them. Phoebe admits that when she was younger, she had a hard time at school and as a teenager, and it is those experiences that help her relate to the young people they support.I remember that only a few years ago Higher Farm was a dairy farm. It was sold and then it seemed to change overnight into what it is today. It wasn’t until we spoke to Phoebe about advertising in our magazines that we realised they do so much more than just lessons and livery. They are also a CIC (community interest company), which is a special type of business that exists to benefit the community rather than the owners. They do this by offering an alternative provision for young people who have become or are at risk of becoming disengaged from mainstream education or training. Participants aren’t required to have previous equine experience, just a passion to learn and a desire to re-engage. The main aim of the programme is to develop the young person in communication, confidence, teamwork, building relationships, perseverance and responsibility. As Phoebe and I talk, her passion and motivation is visible. At the moment they have two young people; however, they want to grow the scheme and when I ask what their limit will be, she smiles, holds her hands out enthusiastically and says, “As many young people as we can.” Her aim is to develop a residential setting in the near future; Byley is a beautiful location and Higher Farm is set on slightly raised ground, so from the back you can look out over the Cheshire countryside. They want to build small pods, taking advantage of the view, for the young people to use for their needs, whether that’s education, counselling or just some quiet time.We head out of the office so I can experience the view for myself, and I get to meet some of their horses out in the fields. I am not a ‘horsey person’, but even I can’t resist a stroke of the long nose of a friendly brown pony with a blond mane, and I can completely understand how the horses help young people. There have of course been official studies done on the benefits of equine therapy, but just being there in the fresh air with them, you can feel their calming influence.I get a tour of the farm and see the riding school arena, which is booked for a special training session today; they have about 30 of their own ponies for children to learn to ride on. They also have stables for individuals to keep their own horses and do livery (it’s a bit like a 5-star hotel for horses). We make our way round the side of one of the main barns where their equine therapy unit is based. A horse is having his feet cleaned ready for a session in their water treadmill. This is a large unit with a treadmill base; the horse then stands within it and it fills with about a foot of water (although this varies depending on the horse’s needs). The horse then walks as the treadmill moves, which helps them build muscle, recover after injury and generally improve their fitness. They also have something called a combi floor, which is like those vibrating plates you see in some gyms; this helps with muscle recovery and the horse stands under warm lights while enjoying the benefits. If you want to have a quick look at the farm, there is a café which is open seven days a week called Cobby’s. The have an old bus set up for rainy days and a choice of healthy meals and drinks.I am blown away by Higher Farm (and Phoebe) and what they have achieved, and their future plans are inspirational. They have so much going on and the alternative provision they have already offered to two young people in such a short period of time has been life-changing. They don’t shout about it, though – it was me that asked them to do this article. They do it for the good of the young people and not for any business reasons – their stables and livery keep them busy enough!Katy

66Eating well...AS an integrative psychotherapist I look at the ‘whole person when it comes to helping them with issues such as stress, anxiety, and depression. I have a keen interest in optimum nutrition and have studied the link between emotional wellbeing and a balanced diet. Diet is not just about managing weight, it is concerned with getting enough of the right nutrients such as essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals to promote the efficient functioning of the brain, improve energy levels, enhance quality sleep, and increase hormonal balance, as well as keeping inflammation in check and the body in homeostasis.Something that is not often spoken about is the link between food and our emotions-more specifically-anxiety. Is there a link between nutrition and anxiety? Are there foods we should stay away from and foods that we should include plenty of to help manage our anxiety?Certainly, eating foods that put stress on our physical well-being will have an impact on our mood and increase anxiety. These would include foods high in sugar and saturated fat. Foods that create an acidic inflammatory response in the body also create imbalance in the hormonal systems. • There is also increasing research showing a link between vitamin D deficiency and mood disorders such as anxiety.• Alcohol and caffeine are known to create anxiety responses in the body so reducing these is a simple but effective first step.• Eating a well-balanced rainbow (coloured fruit and vegetables) diet rich in alkaline producing foods and nutrient dense complex carbohydrates, fats, and proteins such as fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds ,lean meat, and fish grains such as Oats and pulses such as lentils help to enrich the body with B vitamins and important mineral such as zinc and magnesium known to support a healthy nervous system and balance hormones.• Dark chocolate and bananas are a good source of magnesium which promotes pain relief and relaxation.• Good sources of protein such as lean meat, fish, and nuts and seeds if you eat a predominantly plant -based diet provide amino acids which convert into mood lifting neurotransmitters such as serotonin. • Camomile is often recommended for calming anxiety • Turmeric (curcumin) has been studied and shown to reduce anxiety and can be easily incorporated in to soups and smoothies and calming well-being teas.• Reducing sugar intake can also be helpful. Sugary drinks can give quick energy fixes but then we get the energy dips which can lower mood, or worse keep us awake at night-so swapping a sugary drink with a herbal tea or a soda and a squeeze of lemon can be really helpful in restoring emotional balance. As we move into late Spring and early summer salads are high on the list of good foods and are great with avocados, nuts and seeds, fish, and lean meats as a way of getting a good range of vitamins and minerals. Going for a range of colours is known as a ‘rainbow diet’ and ensures we get the balance right. Also, a colourful plate is much more appealing as we first engage with food through our eyes. So experiment with a variety of peppers, tomatoes, carrots, beetroot, fresh garlic, radishes, fennel, cucumber, onions, and salad cress …delicious! Roll on the summer and roll off the winter pounds Annette Boden
