Cider N ow the weather is changing for the better there s a big temptation to reach for something cold and refreshing when relaxing outside Often and as much as we like them a beer doesn t always cut the mustard and we need something a little sharper or sweeter That s where a nice cold glass of cider comes into its own There s something about the gentle fizz the sharp tang and sweet aroma that makes the hard graft worth it we all know that ahh that comes after the first gulp Cider has been around in this country for a serious amount of time but it was the Roman s that brought with them the concept of cultivating apple trees to harvest the fruit Because most orchards were from seedlings the taste of apples varied from those sweet and edible to those whose bitterness and sharpness needed a bit of extra work to make them palatable hence they started making cider as we know it The Normans took this base and went further still by introducing orchards and improved presses to get more juice out As the centuries passed the climate and soil conditions in Hereford Worcestershire and Somerset proved to be the better places to grow apple trees on a commercial scale and sadly the smaller regional ciders slowly went into decline We as a nation are one of the worlds biggest consumers of cider if not the biggest so i t s no surprise that there are plenty of different ways to enjoy a glass or 2 12 Here are a few different recipes that you can try if you fancy spicing up your evenings or brunches in the sun Cider mimosa A different take on the classic Bucks Fizz take some well chilled sparkling cider and add to a champagne flute filled with chilled fresh orange Add a splash of ginger liqueur or triple sec and enjoy Cider Margarita Serves 2 1 3 pint 180ml cider 4 shots tequilla 1 shot ginger syrup 1 shot orange liqueur Grand Marnier Put all the ingredients in a jamjar or shaker filled with ice Shake until well chilled strain and pour into a glass For extra zing mix some sugar and ground cinnamon together place on a saucer and dip the rim of the glass into some cider before dipping into the sugar mix If you haven t got any ginger syrup take cup sugar cup water and a good inch of fresh ginger grated Add to a pan boil until the sugar s dissolved cool and strain Cider Sangria 2 ways In a large jug pour a bottle of wine some sliced strawberries oranges and limes and fresh mint Add a cup of lemonade and cup of lime juice Stick in the fridge for half an hour Just before serving add a load of ice and 2 bottles of your favourite cider Alternatively take 700ml pure apple juice 4 shots vodka 4 shots orange liqueur cored and sliced apple peeled orange segments cubed melon cantaloupe honeydew and inch peeled fresh ginger Add to a jug and refrigerate for a couple of hours Take out the ginger add a load of ice and gently pour in a large bottle 750ml of sparkling dry cider And on that note I ll leave you until next time stay safe stay home if you can and look after yourself and your family Rich The Beer Emporium

Backups E verything you own breaks Your washing machine your lawnmower your car your television your coffee machine Everything gets old and dies Computers are not exempt One day you will turn it on and it will refuse to boot Or there will be some distressing noises and your lifetime s photos will have disappeared I am frequently contacted by people to whom this has happened and they all say two things It worked yesterday and No I haven t made any backups Let me tell you an immutable law any file you only have one copy of you will lose At some time that drive it resides on will break and you won t get it back So it is simple make at least three copies of all your irreplaceable files one on your computer the primary copy one on a hard drive or memory stick that you keep at home one that is off site i e not where it could be stolen or lost in a fire at the same time as your computer That off site copy might be at a friend s or a cloud copy like Microsoft OneDrive or Google Drive which have the advantage of running all the time Either way you have one copy to hand for convenience and a backup backup in case of disaster 20 But how Firstly you need something to copy onto The cheapest option is an external drive also called a USB drive A better option is a Network Attached Storage device NAS which you link to your network and is always available and is a good option if you have more than one computer in the house Secondly don t rely on manual copies as you won t remember or things will go wrong Get a proper backup program that makes the backups to a schedule and reminds you if it needs that USB drive to be plugged in EaseUS Todo Backup Free is simple and reliable but there are many offerings out there Such a program will also make system backups which are essential different from file backups and will let you recover your machine if it won t even boot up Thirdly I recommend professional advice to get you started the right way and give you peace of mind More information can be found on my website at www goggleboxtech uk blog Andrew GoogleboxTech

Our local heritage T he site of Cranage Airfield was chosen for use as a training and maintenance unit in August 1939 Originally just a grass airfield with three runways these were upgraded with Army Track Wire Mesh then replaced with American Metal Planking in April 1943 It had 8 blister hangars for maintenance use At Byley close to the airfield was a Vickers Armstrong factory assembling Wellington bombers The completed aircraft would be towed from the factory to the airfield for their first test flight and then onward for delivery Several flying units were based at the airfield The first was No 2 School of Navigation formed on October 21st 1940 It operated twin engine Avro Ansons for training navigators In 1942 it was renamed the Central Navigation School and was increased to 58 Ansons From December 1940 the airfield also housed its first operational squadron 96 Squadron was equipped with Hawker Hurricanes and operated in the night air defence role It mainly protected the industrial and port areas of Liverpool Then in July 1941 1531 Flight was formed as a Beam Approach Training Flight using the Airspeed Oxford When the Central 24 Navigation School was moved out to RAF Shawbury Cranage became the home of the Repair and Inspection Squadron of Servicing Wing In 1944 the USA Army Air Force 14th Liaison squadron worked from the site operating Sentinels This unit was part of the 9th Air Force and General George Patton s 3rd Army Patton himself visited Cranage Airfield in May 1944 from his nearby headquarters at Peover Hall where he was staying while he prepared for Operation Overlord and the Normandy landings As the war drew to a close flying at Cranage was reduced A detachment of No 12 Pilot Advanced Flying Unit operated there from February 1945 The only flying unit operating from the airfield after the war was No 190 Gliding School which was formed in May 1945 using Kirby Cadet gliders It operated from the site for two years Cranage Airfield did suffer casualties aircraft crashed on take off and landing and during test flights after aircraft had been assembled or repaired The war graves of 16 aircrew can be found in the churchyard of St John Byley These include 13 from the UK 2 Australians 2 Canadians and 1 from New

airfields could be targets in a strategy aimed at capturing them and so pillboxes and battle headquarters were added Historic England listed the airfield remains as a Scheduled Monument in July 24th 2002 Zealand Their ages range from 19 to 31 they made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of this nation Flying ceased from the site in 1947 but was used for storage and maintenance In 1954 the airfield was allocated to the USAF as a satellite for their site at RAF Burtonwood It was home to a detachment of 7493 Special Investigation Wing and 7523 Support Squadron and a number of their non flying units were also stationed there At the end of June 1957 the USAF returned the base to the RAF and it was closed permanently in 1958 with the hangars being dismantled and sold Remains of part of the airfield defences of RAF Cranage survive well including some of the battle headquarters a gun pit three pillboxes and a night accommodation aircrew sleeping shelter These are rare survivals nationally and they illustrate well some of the measures taken to protect airfields from the threat of capture These airfield defences were constructed in two phases In the 1930s they were designed to provide Fitness P ush and Pull Motivators As the lock down continues gyms remain closed and lifestyles upside down we must remain focused on our goals and motivated to keep pushing forward with our health and fitness goals Motivation is what gives us a desire to behave in certain ways or the reason why we have taken a certain action This motivation can be from a negative perspective in that we were trying to get away from an outcome or from a positive perspective we are trying to achieve a certain outcome When it comes to health and fitness how we process these different motivational factors may be the answer to why we cannot sustain our health and wellness journey Push and Motivation Pushing away things we don t want is a natural behaviour we are motivated to make a change away from a painful or undesired state People can be highly motivated to make change when they are unhappy with the current situation An example of a push motivator would be when you can t fit into your jeans anymore and feel embarrassed and humiliated buying 30 the next size up Pull and Incentive While push is defined by the term motivation the pull side of the theory of motivation is defined by the word incentive and incorporates a desire for an end result We move toward incentives by choice not being forced or pushed towards them The closer we get to an incentive the more we want it and try to get it as if it is pulling us to the end goal Things that are incentives pull us towards them because the desire for them comes from within ourselves This is the main difference between push and pull motivation push motivators are external forces while pull incentives stem from chosen goals Goal Setting Push and Pull When we set out on a fitness journey we are always encouraged to set goals as it is a proven method to help us remain on track When we have clarity focus and a destination we are much more likely to succeed Now should be no different Both push and pull factors help us to understand our desired destination however

FOGS A t present Government advice about social distancing and self isolation means that FOGS working parties cannot take place However we have time to reflect on the successes of our volunteer group and to plan future activities As soon as FOGS was founded in 2013 members started work to improve both the bank above the car park and the land beside the path to the Crewe platform The grass was cut regularly and a variety of bulbs and flowering plants introduced Hedge saplings donated by the Woodland Trust were planted Passengers supported our aim After years of neglect we wanted to make our village proud of Goostrey railway station Soon passengers were also enjoying displays of plants on the platforms With help from Lowe s of Byley and later from Hassall s of Goostrey tubs and hanging baskets were placed near the entrance and exit to each platform to maximise the impact But there was a problem The water supply had been cut off about 20 years before when the station became unmanned FOGS members erected a water butt for filling watering cans behind the platform shelter but during dry summer months the container was empty FOGS offered to pay the majority of the cost of re installing water at the station and Northern Rail agreed to fund the installation of pipes and a tap In May 2015 the FOGS treasurer paid nearly 1 000 and the cheque was processed within a month Northern Rail provided a lockable tap and laid piping from it to the place where United Utilities 38 said they would make a connection to the mains via a water meter But it took many months of negotiations before the water supply was eventually reconnected Mike Jarvis the chair of FOGS at that time said Getting this job completed took much more effort than it should have done and our late chairman Cyril Caulkin deserves credit for persevering and seeing it through to completion This included using the local press to shame people into action and to obtain a significant discount on the installation charges Last year bug hotels and boxes to attract birds and bats were erected to make the area around the station more wildlife friendly and we received a Wild About Goostrey gold award Consistent effort over several years has helped the group to win several competitions In 2014 Goostrey was judged the Most Improved Station in the Cheshire Best Kept Station competition In 2017 and 2018 FOGS was rewarded for involving members of our local community by receiving the Youth Challenge Award and the Diversity Award In 2019 a photo of two volunteers relaxing in the seating area on the Manchester platform was voted the best in a national competition organised by Community Rail They also shortlisted Goostrey at gold level in the category It s your station New volunteers are always welcome even though we cannot physically be at the station at present For more information please contact Dave Roberts vice chair on sharp shooter talktalk net Friends of Goostrey Station

Parish Council news Parish Councillor celebrates 40 years of service to residents of Holmes Chapel R ab Parry was elected to Holmes Chapel Parish Council in May 1980 40 years ago Over this time he has served as chairman twice in 1989 90 and 1996 97 and been very active in many other positions on council committees His contribution to parish council business and activities over this long period has been Councils Rab s public service is exemplified by the time and effort he has given to faithfully serve others The Parish Council want to thank him publicly for all his hard work and faithful service Despite the difficulties of these current times we want to take a moment to reflect on all he has contributed and achieved over the last 40 years He has given so much to not only the people of Holmes Chapel but the many organisations who have also benefitted from his wisdom and service thank you Rab and congratulations from us all Community Kindness A local resident and artist has very kindly donated an iPad for the community After much thought about how best to use this it has been donated to The Cedars care home allowing residents of the care home to keep in touch with loved ones during this very difficult extensive and his local knowledge of great use to the council During this time he has also shown great commitment to other organisations including the Cheshire Brine Subsidence Compensation Board Cheshire County Adoption Panel Manchester Airport Consultative Committee and Cheshire Community Action This in addition to having served as a school governor for Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School and had various roles as an elected member for Congleton Borough and Cheshire County 44

Grandma s kitchen W Chocolate Chip Cookies Method Preheat oven to 180 160 fan gas Mark 4 Line a large baking sheet with baking parchment Put the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl and mix thoroughly with a fork until light and fluffy Add the vanilla extract and beat the egg into the mixture In a separate bowl add the flour cocoa powder and baking powder mix it well Add the flour mixture into the batter mix a third at a time and mix well finally stir in the chocolate chunks chips Using a tablespoon spoon the mixture onto the baking sheet it should make approximately 9 cookies Leave enough space between each cookie for the mixture to spread It will flatten out as it bakes Bake in the oven for 14 minutes the cookies will be soft when they come out of the oven so leave on the baking 100g Butter so e all need a bit of chocolate in our lives during these strange times 50 150g Muscava ftened do sugar tract 1tsp Vanilla ex 1 Large free ra nge egg 150g Self rais ing flour 40g Cocoa po wder 1 2tsp Baking powder 100g Chocolat e chunks or chips tray to cool thoroughly The cookies will be soft on the inside almost like a cake Put the kettle on and enjoy with a nice cuppa

Health D oes anyone feel that they started with great plans for all the things they would achieve during lockdown but now find they haven t achieved these but are feeling more tired even though doing less If so you are not alone We are living through an extremely stressful worrying time All this worry can lead our bodies to be exposed to long term stress which can be very detrimental to both our mental and physical wellbeing and can leave us feeling exhausted but can also dampen our immune systems The good news is there are some easy things we can to help reduce our feeling of stress in these worrying times Eat well Eating a good health diet of unprocessed foods with lots of fruit and vegetables can really help our bodies deal with stress Keep hydrated Drinking plenty of water has lots of health benefits It can reduce the number of headaches we have increase our energy levels improve our bowel function and mental concentration and reduce sugar cravings Enjoy nature It s been shown that spending time in nature can really reduce our stress levels This can be a stroll in the woods but this might be difficult for anyone having to isolate at the moment If you have access to a garden just spending time out there can be just as beneficial Exercise regularly Regular exercise has been shown to reduce stress At the moment gyms are closed but there are lots of other things we can still do Walking or cycling in the country or doing some 54 exercise at home This could be dancing yoga or one of the many on line exercise classes available The main thing is do something you enjoy and have fun Try a hobby or interest you enjoy this can be pottering in your garden or doing a bit of knitting or baking a cake The main thing is it s something that you enjoy and you find it relaxing Stay connected It can be hard with the current restrictions but staying in touch with friends and family is more important than ever Many people are isolating which can also be really lonely It could be phone calls or zoom calls but keeping in touch gives us a support network and lets us talk about how we might be feeling Try to reduce watching the news and social media we obviously want to be informed about the current situation but maybe just watch one news bulletin then go and do something else We can watch news 24 7 at the moment and this can increase our feelings of stress Similarly if you find your social media feed is full of negative news maybe think about limiting the amount of time you spend on it Be kind to yourself Don t put unrealistic expectations on yourself of what you should be doing or make comparisons to what others are doing If you don t come out of lockdown having learned three new languages or being able to bake like Mary Berry it really doesn t matter Wishing everyone stays safe healthy and happy in these difficult times Karen Cheshire Clinical Reflexology
