Brereton Life Volunteers Are Still Helping rereton Residents Who Need Help I hope that you are all able to enjoy a bit more freedom as the lockdown is gradually easing although it is clear that we must continue to be very careful Please follow the government and NHS guidance on the new rules especially for the new Test Trace system introduced In this update I have a couple of specific items of news for you First I want to assure you that our Brereton Good Neighbours volunteers are still there to help you Despite the easing of the lockdown and social distancing rules there will still be people in our community who will need support with shopping prescription collection a friendly chat on the phone or some help with IT to get connected to the internet to use social media or video communications Hopefully family friends and immediate neighbours will continue to be around to help with this although as circumstances change and more people are returning to work after lockdown this may not always be practical I just want to let you know that Brereton Good Neighbours is still there to help and our volunteers will carry on providing assistance for anyone in Brereton who needs it So far during the lockdown our volunteers have helped with more than 60 cases of requests from residents Second I just want to let you know that we now have a cashless payment system up and running to help with shopping for residents by our BGN volunteers This simple process involves The agreement of the volunteer to pay for the shopping using their own personal credit or debit card The agreement of the resident to make an over the phone credit or debit card payment to Brereton Parish B 6 Community Interest Group after the shopping has been delivered Brereton Parish Community Interest Group guarantees immediate reimbursement to the volunteer via bank transfer from Brereton Parish Community Interest Group This removes the need to use cash which still remains the most risky form of payment for everyone To request help either follow our link on the website www breretonlife org email us alastair breretongoodneighbours gmail com or by telephone on 01477 532947 Food Donations Urgently Needed s many of you will already know the Brereton Good Neighbours group has started up a Foodbank for those in need in the parish and for families attending our school We have started collecting items but now need more donations Items we are collecting include Tea coffee cereal rice pasta tinned vegetables including beans spaghetti etc tinned meat and fish tinned sauces for rice and pasta soup jam biscuits long life milk instant noodles toiletries Giving can be one off weekly or month but this is a long term project It would help if you could get in touch with me before buying to check on any shortage goods that you could help out with Items can be dropped off at the Rectory at any time please ring the bell and leave on the doorstep If you have any questions or queries please get in touch with Rev Sandi Fisher Rector St Oswald s Parish Church on behalf of Brereton Good Neighbours by email at fishersandi123 gmail or by telephone on 01477 533263 A

Shop local P lease shop locally and put your money where your house is On 23rd March the COVID 19 pandemic saw the closure of non essential businesses and shops for an initial period of 3 weeks At the time of writing this article we are now in our 11th week of lockdown and retail businesses are now able to open on 15th June However our pubs restaurants hairdressers beauty salons gyms venues are still waiting for news of when they can expect to open and are planning how they can operate within social distancing guidelines and keep their staff and customers safe During the lockdown we have been so fortunate to have had many essential businesses continuing to operate with dedicated staff who have made it possible Many businesses have adapted their offering with takeaway food afternoon teas online shopping free contactless local delivery remote services and diversifying what they offer Sadly some have had no option but to temporarily close their doors The lockdown may have brought some benefits the fresh air less traffic less litter the rest time to think time to plan and precious time with family whether at home or on screen The community spirit has 10 been palpable with volunteers supporting those isolating residents and groups rallying together to offer support and community projects to keep everyone s spirits up But what about the effect on our local and national economy Have people s spending habits changed Will the hazards of social distancing mean that people will prefer to continue to shop online With jobs at risk and reduced incomes will people be spending less or have different priorities As the lock down eases and larger national retail outlets are opening their doors there is the opportunity to travel further for shopping and other services However it is so important to try local first All your local businesses are keen to get back to work and hope that they will recover from this unprecedented period Whether you are looking for a gift groceries a tradesperson a business to business service a restaurant meal takeaway or a drink with friends please consider using a local business before going elsewhere whenever possible With a very uncertain future your village business community needs your support now more than ever before Marie Bennett The Print Room

Health A t the time of writing this article our clinic is still closed but we have been busy behind the scenes getting everything ready to re open safely all being well in July although this might change depending on guidance from the government I thought some of you might be curious as to what reflexology actually is so thought this would be a good time to explain Reflexology is a complementary therapy most people have heard of but unless you have had it probably don t know exactly what it is or how it works Some think it s just a foot massage some a bit of a pamper treatment Although it is a lovely treatment to receive I d like to explain what it is how it works and show that it is so much more than just another relaxing treatment although it is very relaxing Reflexology is a non invasive complementary therapy which works alongside conventional medical care to help the body to re balance and begin its own healing process Reflexology works on the principle that different areas of the feet hands and ears correspond to all the different areas of the body including the internal organs and glands It is a holistic therapy which aims to bring balance to the whole body and mind So how does reflexology work By applying precise pressure to these specific 12 areas and points using the thumbs and fingers a trained clinical reflexologist can help to identify areas of imbalance and create a bespoke treatment plan tailored to the individual needs of the client Pressure applied in a specific way can help stimulate the nerves and blood flow to the corresponding area of the body and help to stimulate the body s own healing processes helping bring balance to the affected area of the body The deep relaxation and improved sense of wellbeing can benefit anyone but may be particularly beneficial to people who suffer from the many emotional psychological and physical effects stress can cause such as Affects on mood Sleep disorders Digestive problems such as IBS or constipation Headaches and migraines Muscular tension such as back shoulder and neck pain Hormonal imbalances e g PMS endometriosis painful or heavy periods Fertility problems Well I hope that s helped to answer a few questions people might have had on reflexology and I hope everyone is staying safe and well at what is still such a difficult time for many people Karen Cheshire Clinical Reflexology

Mindfulness T ry a little tenderness the science and benefits of mindful self compassion According the mental health charity Mind around 1 in 4 people in the UK annually experience some form of mental health related issue and 1 in 6 report symptoms of anxiety and depression In an increasingly busy world with all the demands that everyday living puts on us it is no surprise that stress and anxiety levels continue to rise So it is helpful to know that by taking simple steps to take care of ourselves we can alleviate some of the suffering from the pressures of life in the 21st century The impact of stress Life is busy and often stressful stress plays a significant role in the onset of disease in the mind and body leading to conditions such as diabetes heart disease cancer it creates acidity in the body and a constant flow of stress hormones in the body leads to physical and emotional suffering We need some stress in our lives to motivate us and to keep us alert however when the body constantly feels under attack from internal and external stressors it impacts negatively on our immune system and all the major organs in the body Suffering in silence People often suffer in silence for some time before acknowledging they are struggling with anxiety as culturally we strive to meet goals and targets to be our best and anxiety might be perceived to be a weakness and yet it is a natural response to stress Coping strategies that hinder more than help Quite often rather than addressing suffering people battle on and suppress anxiety through poor coping strategies such as drinking alcohol that can lead to excess and mask the problem Also comfort eating is often a poor stress response stuffing down difficult emotions 22 and creating more problems There is a better approach try a little tenderness Mindfulness and selfcompassion are proven to be effective antidotes to stress and anxiety Research shows that self compassionate people tend to make healthier lifestyle choices and recover from setbacks more quickly Self compassion simply means offering ourselves the same care and tenderness we offer to others who are suffering Applying self care acknowledging our needs and meeting them as best we can supports well being and enable us to many daily and often difficult life events and challenges with an inner resource and well of emotional resilience Sleep for rest and replenishment and healthy growth and maintenance Seek friendship and support Prioritise what you need and want to do each day keep the lists short so that you are not overwhelmed Recognise the body s need for exercise find an exercise programme that s right for you whether its jogging walking in nature yoga or Pilates or dancing make it fun and enjoyable Take time for rest and relaxation Healthy nutrition and replenishment listen to your body and eat healthy when you are hungry and drink when you are thirsty Be mindfully present in nature this will help you to rebalance and replenish Make your work life balance a priority Take time to be with friends and family Keep a gratitude pleasant events diary this will help keep the balance during stressful times Seek professional help when you experience overwhelm and anxiety that becomes unmanageable Annette Boden Wellbeing

Mo toring histor y 8 5 years ago the driving test became compulsory for all new drivers Some may argue that the test should have been compulsory long before 1935 after all steam cars had been on the roads since the early 19th century With the first recorded death in Ireland by a steam motor vehicle in 1869 you would like to think there were some precautions in place for road safety Throughout the late 19th century the development of cars progressed and soon petrol was replacing steam General Motors GM an American car manufacturer came to Britain in 1925 Two years early it was recorded there were around 383 525 cars on the roads GM offered a car for every purse and every purpose and by 1930 there were one million cars on the roads in Britain One million cars yet there was no test You would be instructed by the Salesman who would demonstrate how to start the car use of controls and you would be sent on your way There were no age restrictions it wouldn t be unusual to see a child driving their parents around Whilst this may sound quite handy when you want picking up from the shops you have to feel for the 7 000 people a year who were killed in road accidents half of whom were pedestrians Fortunately during 1930 the Road 30 Traffic Act was introduced enforcing age restrictions and a test for disabled drivers A small step to road safety however with the average speed of a vehicle being 30 40mph the lack of experience of the drivers and popularity of the car the roads in Britain were becoming dangerously busy In 1934 testing was finally introduced for all new drivers but this was only voluntary March 1935 saw Britain s road speed limits reduced to 30mph in built up areas and in April the first cat s eyes appeared on our roads Finally on the 1st of June 1935 the driving test became compulsory for all new drivers Sixty one years later in 1996 the theory test was introduced Has the driving test continued throughout the years Not quite it s been suspended three times since 1935 once during World War II then throughout The Suez Canal Crisis and today during the Coronavirus Pandemic If we look at our current road safety measures we have speed cameras speed limits cat s eyes speed awareness courses neighbourhood watch speed cameras safer cars with cruise control satellite navigation with voice alerts a variety of road signs the theory test and a practical test Are our roads safer today I would like to think so Jody Woodbridge

Grandma s kitchen W ith sunny summer days and more time spent in our gardens it is a perfect time to enjoy afternoon tea with some homemade buttermilk scones We love them with some freshly picked strawberries from our garden Method Heat oven to 220 200 fan gas 7 Line a large baking tray with baking parchment In a mixing bowl add the sifted flour baking powder and salt Add the butter and rub it in with your fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs Stir in the sugar Gently warm the buttermilk and vanilla essence this can be done in the microwave and slowly add to the dry mixture it should be sticky but not wet Leave a small amount of the buttermilk vanilla to one side as this will be used with the splash of milk to brush the scones before baking Turn the mixture out on to a lightly floured surface and flatten out to approximately 3cm Try not to handle the dough too much as it will not rise when baked Use a 5cm or 6cm cutter to stamp out the scones lifting them straight out without twisting them Any remaining dough can be gently shaped and cut until all the dough is used Place the scones on the baking tray leavIng space for them to rise and brush the tops only with the reserved buttermilk milk mixture Bake in the centre of the oven for approximately 34 Buttermilk Scones 450g Self rais ing flour 1 4tsp Baking powder 1 4tsp Salt 100g Cold bu tter diced 85g Golden ca ster sugar 284ml Butter milk 2tsp Vanilla es sence Splash of milk 12 14 minutes until well risen and golden Place the scones on a wire rack to cool cover with a clean tea towel to keep them moist Serve cut in half with clotted cream and jam or any other filling of your choice Best served warm and on the day they are baked You can freeze them and once defrosted are delicious warmed up gently in the microwave for approximately 20 seconds

Artist in lockdown L ocal artist Allie Pottinger runs Watercolour Workshops from her Swettenham studio and at Gather beside the Town Hall in Congleton Lockdown has changed all of this Her first online class happened by accident Early on in lockdown a regular client contacted me to see if could give a virtual demonstration to her Wilmslow WI group I had only just heard about Zoom but quickly agreed and set about coming to terms with the online platform to see how I could make it work from my kitchen table I bought a clamp to let me position the camera at the best angle I changed the lights and started to test the set up on the rest of the family sitting in different rooms in the house I had to be able to let the group see the artwork but also to see my palette and to hear me clearly The event went 52 well but from what I had thought would be the local Wilmslow group turned out to be the whole Cheshire Federation of the WI There were 78 people in the virtual room all painting along with me It gave me the confidence to know that during lockdown I could still reach my clients and to offer them support for their art even though we could not be together I realised how important it was to stay in touch with my clients Watercolours have a wonderful effect on your mood you quite easily pass the time and get lost in the moment The act of starting and Wincle Bluebell Woods Zoom Class in May
creating a painting can help with giving both escapism and purpose This has helped some of my clients with managing the mental challenges of isolation I have been very conscious communicating with my clients regularly to give advice on their projects and running short classes on line I have also taken the opportunity to revamp my web page This Summer I am in an artists article edit in House Garden for my house and dog portraits and I knew that I had to have a good reference point for anyone interested in my style This precious time has helped me concentrate on the back end stuff of my business I have now a mailing list and my students are all in a database rather than my handwritten cards in my address box They still love a hand painted postcard with seasonal flowers I find I am constantly trying to think of ways to brighten up the days Experience from lockdown for me is that aside from kindness you step out of your comfort zone and look at new ways to learn or you just stay still Despite sharing the kitchen table with your son s home schooling daughters new baking experiment and my painting commissions we manage most days to get purpose and routine I am thankful for our little garden for pleasing nurturing jobs like thinning out the radishes in our veg plot If you would like to try watercolour painting why not join one of Allie s Zoom demonstrations July is colourful Summer Blooms on Thursday 9th July at 2pm or Beginners Summer Landscape Thursday 6th August 2pm Paint along or just watch There are also some free short videos on Allies Facebook page For more information email alison alliepottinger com or visit www alliepottinger com Allie Pottinger 53

Our local heritage H olmes Chapel s Water Supply In the 19th century the village had no mains water People had to rely on private groundwater wells rainwater collected and stored in tanks as at The Hollies and natural springs There were at least three of these one half way down the bank out of the village on Knutsford Rd known as The Spout Nicker s or Nicho s well half way down the bank leading to The Hermitage closed in 1934 and a well on London Road near Victoria Avenue closed in 1916 In 1909 a scheme was put forward to supply piped water to Holmes Chapel Mr Wyatt the engineer estimated the cost to be 1 950 Fourteen tenders were received and a tender for 772 from Stanton Iron Co was accepted This tender was perhaps for the supply of pipes only because by 1910 Holmes Chapel was borrowing 1631 for the laying of water mains to the village The water was brought from Delamere through Middlewich with a booster pump at Sproston This supply proved to be inadequate and properties beyond the village boundary such as Cranage Hall could not be supplied By 1915 complaints were being made via the clerk of Congleton Council to be passed on to Middlewich Urban District Council The water pressure at Middlewich was 50lbs but Holmes Chapel was only receiving 8 10 lbs such that sometimes the farmers could not get enough water to cool the milk There is a height difference of thirty metres between Holmes Chapel and Middlewich and the problem was thought to 56 be one of pumping and not rainfall The shortage was eventually solved by turning off a valve to restrict the supply to Middlewich In May 1916 the water was turned off for a whole day without warning and the people of Holmes Chapel complained that they had had to go back to the old times and take their cans and buckets to the pump Mr S Moss was put in charge of the mains in 1917 and was responsible for flushing the system once a month In 1926 he reported that water was being wasted and a leaflet was sent to all householders urging them to limit their consumption which was much lower than we would regard as acceptable today By the 1930s attempts were being made to improve the supply throughout mid Cheshire but progress was slow Only in 1945 were local newspapers able to report that the Northwich and Congleton water project was complete The new seven inch water main now ran from the reservoir at Heyeswood near Hartford to the boundary of Congleton passing through Allostock Byley Holmes Chapel and Goostrey Dignitaries made a tour of the trunk and finished at the Good Companions in Holmes Chapel where they were hosted by the contractor The route via Allostock and Byley would explain the origin of the name Pump House Farm in Byley Water to the village now comes from Lake Vyrnwy in mid Wales and there is covered reservoir at the high point of Broad Lane just outside the village Holmes Chapel U3A Local History Group

Patient Panel update Health Centre Redevelopment he good news is that work restarted on 21st May and is now progressing both internally and externally see photo below The target is to complete as much as possible by the end of September but realistically finishing the project is likely to be in the fourth quarter of the year It is hoped that the new dispensary reception and waiting room will be completed over the summer T Health Centre Operations ppointments can now only be made in two ways by e Consult link now on the home page of the Health Centre website or by telephone which seems to be the way preferred by most patients All calls will be triaged by a doctor or nurse practitioner with one of the following outcomes a telephone consultation a video consultation a face to face appointment In practice only 10 of calls have resulted in a face to face appointment This seems to be working very effectively Most clinics are operating Blood tests are currently limited to essential tests only as the NHS continues to limit routine work The CCG A 58 has centralised phlebotomy to hub centres so we currently have provision only two days per week Patients may have to travel to Sandbach at times for phlebotomy B12 and pneumonia injections are being done in the gazebo set up to the right of the building Virtual skin clinics are being trialled The dispensary is coping extremely well with an increased workload Prescriptions are now delivered to the queue outside the Health Centre All of this is to reduce the footfall within the centre and minimise the risk to both staff and patients The Covid 19 pandemic has shown that the practice can manage the service given to patients in a different way without putting them at risk The GP partners are now examining what has worked well and what has not and will be reviewing what they want to take forward as the new normal However there will be no major changes in the immediate future All those working at the Health Centre appreciate the patience and understanding of the community in these challenging times It is important that all realise that the virus has not gone away and they need to keep safe John Wilson Chair Holmes Chapel Health Centre Patient Panel

Passwords T hey are the bane of everyone s life yet they are essential for our security and safety Passwords have plagued the world for decades but with seemingly every website we use and every device we own requiring one remembering them all has now become impossible That in itself has become a security issue because we are tempted to use simple easy to remember passwords or re use the same one in multiple places leaving us very vulnerable if one should be compromised I will look at security in general in a future article but today let s just relieve that burden How to choose a safe password Modern computers can check about 7 billion passwords every second If your password consists of 8 lower case letters a hacker could try every single possibility in half a minute Not much security at all With 14 letters it s around 290 years But include a mix of upper and lower case letters digits and symbols about 92 characters that can be easily reached on your keyboard then an 8 character password gives 23 million year s worth give or take a century or two So always have at least one character from each of those four groups The ideal password is completely random like w 1EU7Poi r which is too 60 hard to remember but choose something like Orange1 and a hacker could break it in seconds They use a dictionary attack trying each of the 60 000 or so commonly used English words plus place and personal names Even if we mix it up a bit hackers know all about substituting 4 for A 1 for I or L zero for O etc you can still zip through the possibilities in thousandths of a second It is clear that using a real word or name is a fatal error The answer The solution to all this is to use a password manager This is a program that integrates into your Internet browser and both remembers and generates long random passwords for you so you never have to enter them again Most of these programs will also synchronise them between your computers and other devices like phones The passwords are safely encrypted using a key only you know that is the only password you will ever need to remember And how do you do that Write it down Keep it separate from your computer and of course write neatly remembering that capital lower case letters are significant More information can be found on my website at www goggleboxtech uk blog Andrew GoogleboxTech
