I wonder if the scorching temperatures will persist as we enter July. It's peculiar because I typically enjoy the heat, especially when on holiday in hot countries. However, I find myself constantly trying to stay cool these days. My heart goes out to our two dogs, Jake and Teddy, who struggle in this heat due to their furry coats. We've provided them with a doggy paddling pool to cool off, but all they've done so far is drink the water!July marks the beginning of the school summer holidays, and I have an exciting adventure planned with my son. We're embarking on a journey through Vietnam, staying in hostels, taking overnight trains, and spending a few nights on a junk boat. I'm filled with anticipation since, in my younger days, I never had the opportunity to travel extensively, only reaching as far as Fuerteventura! While I'm away, my husband will remain at home, taking care of our business, Villages Mag, as well as our beloved dogs. Each holds equal importance in our lives. This year, we've decided to introduce an additional magazine edition in September. Some of our advertisers shared that when we don't publish a magazine, they experience a quieter month. Therefore, we made the decision to include an 11th edition to meet their needs.I am eagerly looking forward to the Holmes Chapel Summer Celebration in a couple of weeks. There are so many great things planned for the weekend. London Road will be closed on Friday night, allowing our wonderful bars to open and spill onto the street. My husband and I will be volunteering on Friday, and we also have a stall at the Village Fair at the Vic Club on Sunday, so it will be a busy weekend for us!I hope you have a fantastic July, and I look forward to speaking with you very soon.Business InsightsScan to Listen & Subscribearchpublications.com/podcast

8LAST issue, I gave you a number of awesome cocktails, perfect for these hot summer days (and nights!), and this month I’m going to conclude with a number of gorgeous alcohol-free cocktails that will be just as much fun for the kids as for those wishing to stay off the booze.Again, you can make these as complicated or as simple as you want to, but as with most things, the more time and effort you put in, the tastier the end result. A simple syrup is, as the name suggests, equal measures of sugar and water simmered until the sugar dissolves and the liquid thickens. To make a fruit syrup, simply add 500g of fruit to the mix, skimming off any foam as it boils. Sieve, and pour into a sterile jar or bottle for a delicious sweet fruity hit whenever you want.An Agua Fresca is a refreshing Mexican drink made with fresh fruit or seeds, a touch of sweetness and a zing of lime. Take 500g of your favourite fruit, pineapple, honeydew melon, mango or passionfruit work really well here, add 2tbs of sugar and 2 tbs of lime juice and a cup (250ml) of water to a blender. Blitz until smooth, and press through a fine sieve into a large jug. Add another 4-500ml of water, skimming off any foam that rises to the surface. Tweak the sugar and lime if you think it needs it, and pour over a tall glass filled with ice. This Ginger-Peach fizz starts off with a simple syrup infused with 2tbs of crushed ginger. Add the ginger to your sugar and water, simmer for a few minutes until all the sugars dissolved. Remove from the heat, and steep for half an hour. Sieve the mixture, and chill well. In a hi-ball glass, take a couple of slices of fresh peach, pressing with the back of a spoon to release some juices. Add a couple of glugs of the ginger syrup, fill the glass up with ice and then top with soda, decorate with a couple of mint leaves.Fancy a slushie? This super easy refreshing mint slushie is so easy to do, and takes no time at all to make. Put 400ml of lemonade, a big handful of fresh mint leaves, and 2 tall glasses of ice into a blender and blitz until it’s all combined. Pour into a glass, and chill. Personally, I love this with a good glug of coconut rum... yum.Until next time.Rich, The Beer Emporium Bottle BankFrom the bar, with Rich

Head down to the Victoria Club for great family entertainment - stalls, fair and much more!Happy to Chat Benches Holmes Chapel Youth Council had the idea to designate a couple of our public benches as places where passers by; dog walkers, joggers, parents with pushchairs or other locals can spend just a couple of minutes chatting to a stranger as they pass by.Two seats have recently been fitted with ‘Happy to Chat’ signs saying ‘Sit here if you don’t mind somebody stopping to say hello’. If you can spare a few minutes as you go about your day then you could make a real difference to others.Loneliness is one of the most significant health concerns - the benches provide an opportunity for those who would appreciate a chat. 20OUR last few weeks have been incredibly busy with the start of the GCSE written examinations. So far, we have delivered 34 hours of examination time and a total of 2023 examination papers. It is a huge achievement for our Year 11 students. We really appreciate the discipline and dedication our children have shown to help them secure their best outcomes. We hope that the half term holiday provides a much needed break from revision but also additional time for independent study to support the final stages of examinations.Remembering Nell Creative Writing Competition 2023 The standard of the entries was incredibly high. Congratulations to our three winners. 1st - Lottie Carey2nd - Esme Warren 3rd - Claire BishopKey stage 3 drama evening of performance! Since January students in years 7-9 have been preparing for an evening of performance on the 13th of June. During this time, students have been working really hard to write their own scripts and choreograph their own scenes based on the theme of ‘Summer’.South Cheshire Athletics Championships On Tuesday 9th May we took a group of Athletes to compete in the South Cheshire Athletics Championships. These students had the potential to be selected and represent South Cheshire, what a fantastic opportunity. All of the students were outstanding, performing to the best of their ability. It was great to see such team spirit from all, as they cheered each other on in their events. We also had some fantastic results from both our Junior and Inter team. Well done to all. A Huge thank you from the PE department, as it was such a pleasure to take an amazing group of students, you all did the school and yourselves proud showing fantastic character, determination and resilience. Congratulations to all the winners and good luck representing Cheshire. Go Team HCCS!!!!! Kathryn LambRecently we received the devastating news that we had lost one of our own, Kathryn Lamb. After the news was shared with the school community, we have spent time reflecting on the impact that Kath made on our school community, and the lasting impression she has made on so many. The outpouring of emails, letters, cards and messages of condolences from staff, students and parents that we have received have been appreciated so much and have been a huge source of comfort to us all. A book of memories has circulated in school and includes some wonderful memories of Kath from students and staff alike. Students have also filled out memory cards during form time in tribute to ‘Miss Lamb’. Staff, students and friends from HCCS attended Kath’s funeral on Tuesday the 13th of June. She was a wonderful friend and colleague to us all.Holmes Chapel Comprehensive SchoolHCCS update...

But despite the fact that we spend nearly a third of our year under the sheets - on average 106 days a year in bed - it doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re getting adequate rest. The majority of us wait far too long before replacing a mattress, robbing ourselves of sweet dreams. When updating your bed, the best course of action is ideally try before you buy, as comfort and support are very individual assessments. Take you time, spending at least 10 minutes lying down in your natural sleeping position - together if the bed is for two - it needs to be right for you. Make a mattress workExperts advise that a mattress that is correct allows your hips to sink in, giving eective support to your lower back. It is not enough for your lower back to just touch the mattress surface. J A C Plumbing & HeatingEMERGENCY CALL OUTSBREAKDOWNS AND REPAIRST:01606 833363 M:07870 822337WE FOLLOW ALL GOVERNMENT GUIDELINES.HC Partnership news...AT the time of writing this column for the village magazine, we are continuing to enjoy good weather, I hope this continues. Apart from the obvious advantages of getting a bit of warm weather, for me the real benefits are that people get out of their houses, walk in and around the village, and we get to see and meet each other again. The next chance we will have to meet up again on mass is coming quite soon. On the 7th of July, 6pm to 11pm, the village centre will be closed for the Holmes Chapel Summer Celebration. Dane Sound Radio will provide music throughout the evening, but the evening will also include a live jazz band. Our village centre food and drink outlets will aim to keep you all fed and watered too. The Holmes Chapel Partnership is supporting the Parish Council for this event, and as always, we would be very grateful of a little additional volunteer help to be a steward for an hour or two. If you think you can help, please see page 12 I often get puzzled looks when I talk about the Holmes Chapel Partnership, most people have heard of it, but few really understand what it is, or what we do. To this question I usually reply, we organise the Holmes Chapel Christmas Fair & Market, Santa Sleigh, and road safety campaigns. In the past we have also been responsible for working with our Parish Council to attract funds to improve our leisure facilities, with the creation of Dane Meadow Park, our Skate Park and most recently the Sensory Garden (next to the Fire Station). Our road safety campaigns continue, which now includes a smartphone friendly safe walking route map for Harry Styles fans to safely get Harry’s Wall at Twemlow Viaduct (as feature on Northwest tonight). If you have never visited this local landmark, if this weather continues, you should.Until Next Time Peter Whiers, Chairman

48Spark Lane Nurseries...AT Spark Lane Nurseries, the vibrant flowers burst into life, inviting me to create a captivating hanging basket. Seeking Brian Lowe’s botanical wisdom, I discovered an exquisite mix of flowers that would infuse my space with enchanting colours and radiance.Brian’s top choice was the Surfinia flower, renowned for its captivating beauty. With its trailing growth and abundant blooms, it created a mesmerizing display of elegance. Surfinias came in a variety of shades, from bold reds and purples to soft pinks and whites, adding charm and allure to any garden or outdoor area. Their delicate yet striking appearance made them the preferred option for those seeking the undeniable beauty of nature.Next, Lobelia White Star, also known as Lobelia erinus ‘White Star,’ added its unique charm to the basket. Its star-shaped white flowers stood out against lush green foliage, evoking purity and grace. This compact, trailing plant gracefully cascaded over pot edges, bringing sophistication and beauty to garden beds, borders, or containers. To infuse a touch of sunshine, Brian included Bidens yellow daisy, scientifically known as Bidens ferulifolia. This charming flowering plant boasted bright yellow, daisy-like blooms that danced amidst delicate, fern-like foliage. Its abundant and eye-catching flowers brought cheerful colour to gardens, borders, and containers. With its ability to withstand heat and drought, Bidens yellow daisy proved to be a resilient and low-maintenance choice, enhancing outdoor spaces with its radiant beauty throughout an extended blooming period.Under Brian Lowe’s botanical expertise, the harmonious blend of Surfinias, Lobelia White Star, and Bidens yellow daisy transformed my hanging basket into a captivating masterpiece, radiating the natural beauty that brightened my home.Katy

52Days Out & Meals Out reviews...A Smallwood family has opened a farm shop in memory of their loving son who sadly died following a road accident in Rushton Spencer.Alec’s parents Gill and Paul are hoping they can help local businesses by stocking locally produced food as well as their own jersey milk & freshly made cakes. The farm shop has only been open since March 2023. We went for a visit to see how they were getting on. I met Gill who was working in the little shop while watching the King’s Coronation. It was lovely to meet Gill & to hear all about what they are aiming to achieve.Alec was passionate about his animals and farming in general. From a very early age, he could be found busy in the fields tending his sheep, sowing grass for the next year. In more recent years, he had bred his own foals and reared countless sheep. The shop is a way they can help support the charity “Farms for City Children” which embodies Alec’s beliefs. The charity give children in urban areas an unforgettable week living and working on a farm. Helping them reconnect to the countryside & nature & learn about food sources. There is a table of items for sale dedicated to the Farms for City Children charity. All sales from this stock go 100% to this wonderful charity. All in Alec’s memory. The farm is a real family affair with everyone pitching in from milking the cows, baking the cakes to manning the shop and everything in between. The shop stocks their own jersey milk, cheese, bread, cereals, jams and baking ingredients. But the main attraction is the chilled display fridge full of freshly made sandwiches and a selection of take home pies. The cakes which are made by Jenny, Alec’s older sister, on the top shelf were seriously impressive. My little girl chose a massive slice of the Kinder Hippo chocolate cake, we got a slice of biscoff caramel shortbread too and a biscuit in the shape of a horse for a friend. They sell soft serve ice cream & slushies too.The farm shop is next door to Smallwood school so is perfect for an after school treat. It’s also easy to find when driving and would be a great place to stop on a bike ride.Alec’s Farm Shop is on School Lane, Smallwood, Sandbach CW11 2URJenny, Days Out and Meals Out Reviews You can find more reviews on my Facebook page & Instagram, search ‘Days Out and Meals Out’

56I’M writing this update after the first full week of AccurX being used for appointments and the triage of patients using the Health Centre. Last week, the system successfully triaged, assessed, set appointments, and allowed the surgery to generally review and manage nearly 800 incoming requests. This is significantly more than they would normally be able to respond to using the standard telephone system. In fact, this ability to assess the patients need more quickly has meant that those with the highest levels of need can be seen sooner. The old 8am rush for an appointment is no longer the case. The GP team have also been able to better use the Primary Care Network staff more appropriately, utilising the likes of the Mental Health Professionals, Physiotherapists, etc in a much more efficient manner. It has also been useful to understand what issues have been thrown up as a result of this first week. Front and centre of this, has been the acknowledgement that patients are still calling in to reception demanding an appointment. The reception team are unable to generate appointments for anyone turning up, however they will happily fill in the AccurX form in with the patient if they are unable to do so themselves. Secondly, some patients are also of the impression that a log-in account/password is needed to make an appointment. This is categorically not the case, just click on the link and the form can be filled in without any passwords being requested. Lastly, it’s been noticed that some patients think that the system gives them ability to do things like self-booking appointment slots. Again, this is not the case, the system is designed to triage requests for patient care. If a future appointment is required, your GP can at times send out a bespoke link with a choice of appointment times, but that is all.We know it’s still early days, however if the first week is an indicator of things to come, then this is only good news for us. Our GP’s can now work more effectively, seeing more patients more quickly, getting us in front of the right care worker to help our specific needs... and that is a very good thing.Rich JepsonHolmes Chapel Health Centre PPG Patient Participation GroupThe Health Centre (HolmesChapel)Holmes Chapel Health Centre,London RoadCrewe, CW4 7BBPowered by AccurxContact us about your requestWe aim for a member of our clinical teamto review your enquiry on the same daythat it is submitted. I’m absolutely loving the warmer weather, it makes delivering refills around the villages an absolute joy! The warmer weather gave me an idea to focus this month’s article on saving water! Why save water? To save energy and money. On average, 16% of a household’s energy bill is from heating water for activities such as baths, showers, washing up and water-using electrical appliances. So small changes to the way we use water at home can make a big difference to reducing your energy bill. How much does the average person use? Most people don’t realise that on average, each person uses around 149 litres of water every single day – that’s enough to make over 550 cups of tea! How do I save water? Buy a butt: Put all that lovely rainwater to good use by installing a water butt in your garden to catch rainwater to use for watering your plants and veg patches.Water out of hours: Water your garden in the early morning or late evening, when less water is lost through evaporation.Ditch the hosepipe: They use hundreds of litres of water an hour. Use a watering can for your plants, and a bucket and sponge for your car, and you’ll be doing the environment a good turn.Spend a minute less: If each member of a family of four spent one minute less in the shower they could save approximately 48 litres of water a day!Turn off the tap: Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth saves around six litres of water per minute. For a family of four, that could be as much as 96 litres a day!Use a washing up bowl: Instead of letting the tap run for longer than it needs to, use a washing up bowl – you can reduce wasted water by up to 50 per cent!Enjoy the sun!Sam, Fillarup Holmes Chapel

62The Benefits of Having Good Loft Access: Unlocking the Hidden PotentialA well-designed loft access system can greatly enhance the functionality and value of your home. In this article, we explore the numerous benefits of having good loft access. From increased storage space to potential conversion opportunities, a well-accessible loft holds the key to unlocking hidden potential within your property.Ample Storage Space: One of the primary advantages of good loft access is the abundant storage space it provides. The loft area is often underutilised and can become a cluttered space filled with forgotten items. With easy access to the loft, you can transform this wasted space into a functional storage area. Whether it’s seasonal decorations, suitcases, or rarely used items, having a well-designed loft access system allows for efficient and organized storage, freeing up valuable space in other parts of your home.Increased Property Value: Having good loft access can significantly increase the value of your property. Potential buyers are often drawn to homes with accessible and usable loft spaces. A well-fitted loft ladder or staircase, along with proper flooring and lighting, showcases the potential for additional living or storage areas. The prospect of expanding the living space in the future is an attractive feature, and it can give your property a competitive edge in the market.Versatile Conversion Opportunities: One of the most exciting advantages of good loft access is the possibility of converting the loft into a functional living space. With easy access, the dream of creating an extra bedroom, office, or playroom can become a reality. A well-designed loft access system provides the foundation for such transformations, making it easier to navigate and utilise the space.Energy Efficiency and Insulation: Properly accessing the loft also allows for improved energy efficiency and insulation. With easy access, homeowners can inspect and maintain insulation, ensuring it remains effective in reducing heat loss. Additionally, loft access makes it easier to carry out necessary repairs or upgrades to plumbing, electrical wiring, and heating systems, minimizing energy waste and potential long-term damage.Investing in good loft access is a decision that brings multiple benefits to homeowners. From creating additional storage space to adding value to your property through the potential for loft conversion, easy access to the loft opens up a world of possibilities. Take advantage of this hidden potential and transform your home with a well-designed loft access system.Alan, Access4LoftsLofts, their hidden potential...

66Our local heritage...In the past when people became poor and had no home or lost their job, they generally ended up in the workhouse. People would live and work in the workhouse in order to stay there, to have a roof over their heads. Once an individual had been admitted, they would be given a uniform to be worn for the entirety of their stay. The inmates were prohibited from talking to one another and were expected to work long hours doing manual labour such as cleaning, cooking or using machinery. Men had to chop wood, break stones or work in the fields. Women’s jobs were scrubbing walls and floors, washing laundry, sewing or weaving. It was a hard life! As well as the poor, orphaned children, the sick, disabled, elderly and unmarried mothers were also usually sent there. The local workhouse for Holmes Chapel was at Arclid, just south of Brereton. It was designed by Henry Bowman and built in 1844-5 at a cost of £7,097. It was intended to eventually accommodate 370 inmates. It comprised three main sections: an entrance block containing porter’s lodge and board room, a long main block of two and three storeys, and a two storey infirmary to the rear. The central section of the main block contained a dining hall at the front with the kitchens and laundry to its rear. To each side of the dining hall were school rooms, for girls at the north and boys at the south. In 1847, increasing concern at the lack of separate accommodation for fever cases led to the creation of a separate fever ward. This was achieved by the modest expenditure of £85 on roofing over two washhouses in the girls’ yard. The original infirmary block had 26 beds, 13 for men and 13 for women. It was extended in 1860, and again in 1873 to increase the capacity to 58. however this still proved insufficient to meet the growing demands and in 1899-1900 a new infirmary was erected at the north of the workhouse. Designed by Alfred Price, it had 100 beds and accommodation for nurses. The total cost was £6,000 - £4,650 for the building, £1,250 for the boiler room, and £400 for furnishing the building.During the First World War, 40 beds were given over for the care of military casualties. In addition, 20 paupers were taken in from the Wirral Union workhouse which was also being used as a military hospital. In September 1918 the casual ward in Congleton which had been closed the previous year was used to accommodate 10 German Prisoners of War who were employed in agricultural work in the area.Later on during the 1920s the use of the infirmary as a general and maternity hospital gradually increased. Then, with the abolition of the workhouse system in 1930, it became officially known as Congleton Public Assistance Institution. During the 1930s the hospital became used for geriatric care and took on the name Arclid Hospital. It was here in 1941 that most of the casualties were taken for treatment after the overnight train crash in Holmes Chapel station occurred. Arclid Hospital closed in the spring of 1993, and the buildings were demolished. Today it has been replaced by a new housing estate.Holmes Chapel U3A Local History Group
