This month, we're rolling out a buet of stories, starting with a cosy sit-down at The Stove Yard. Join me as I delve into the warm world of log burners and discover the delights of outdoor pizza ovens with one of our cherished local gems. Then, I catch up with Martin from The George and Dragon—a true gentleman I've been eager to interview since I began steering this magazine in 2017. It's all change at The George: they've welcomed a new head chef, rolled out a tempting summer and brunch menu, and, the cherry on top, launched afternoon teas! This issue isn't just about new beginnings and tasty menus. We're also sharing more personal journeys. Following my last editorial about my challenges with alcohol, your overwhelming support has been nothing short of heart-warming. While I'm not ready to delve deep into this subject just yet, it's important to shine a light on the support available. We feature an ad on page 39 for Cheshire East's Change, Live, Grow service—a beacon for anyone navigating similar struggles. Remember, reaching out is a brave rst step toward healing.Your feedback continues to fuel our content and fortify our village connections. As you ip through these pages, we hope you're inspired to try new things, support our local heroes, and tap into the community resources that make our village special.Enjoy every page of our June issue—may it add a little extra sunshine to your day! And, nally don't forget to mark your calendars for the Holmes Chapel Summer Celebration weekend, we'll see you there!Katy xOpenMondaytoFriday9.00–5.00andSaturday9.00–4.00www.thestoveyard.comThere’snothinglikelivingflamefromawoodburningstoveforwarmingtheboneswhenit’scoldandthere’snothinglikecookingoutdoorswithwoodforthatuniquewoodfiredflavour,especiallywhenthesunisshining.Evenbetterwhenyou’vemadeabigsavingatCheshire’sbiggeststovedealer.Checkusoutforgreatdealsandahugechoiceoftheverybestinstovesandoutdoorcooking.BIGGREENEGGSANDMOREGOZNEYOUTDOORPIZZAOVENSHUGEDISPLAYOFDESIGNERSTOVESUNIT5HOLMESCHAPELBUSINESSPARKMANORLANEHOLMESCHAPELCHESHIRECW48AFWOODBURNINGSTOVES•BARBECUES•PIZZAOVENS•GRILLSEstablished2005Winter Warmers and Summer Sizzlers DUNSLEYALL-BRITISHSTOVESHOLMES CHAPELSummCELEBRATION

8making a mini telescope to take home. We live just 5 minutes from Jodrell Bank and feel proud to have something of such signicance on our doorstep. Our Day - There are two main areas of Jodrell Bank. The Space pavilion is the original area and the new building called the “Light Pavilion” When we arrived at 10.45 we rst headed to the original part of Jodrell Bank as this was where our booked 11.45 show was so we didn’t want to venture too far. Here, there are some outside experiments to have a go on including the wonderous whispering dishes, which my girls are fascinated by.The Lovell Telescope - The striking feature to this part of the centre is the bright white Lovell telescope towering up into the sky right next to where you are stood. As the telescope can move and pivot you always will get to see it from dierent angles when you visit. Today it was facing away from us and you could see the impressive frame work. There is a short walk further round the telescope so you can get to see the other side. I always enjoy photographing the Lovell telescope as its such a beautiful structure. The Explosive Science Show - The show was lead by two scientists. It was an adult v kids quiz with members of the audience being chosen to come to the front to answer a question about space. After each question the scientists did a fun and very visual experiments which linked to the question asked. There was re, explosions and hidden test tubes. The show lasted 30 minutes as was really entertaining and was perfect for children and families.Jodrell Bank has been at the forefront of a revolution of our understanding of the Universe. It has contributed to the discovery of objects and phenomena that weren’t dreamt of back in 1945. Black holes, quasars, pulsars, gravitational lenses and the fading glow of the Big Bang. Its iconic telescope stands proud in the Cheshire landscape, a place we always point out when we see it in the skyline while driving or on walk.During February half term we spent a day learning about space and the impressive history of the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank in Cheshire. While we were there we experienced their half term science show. “Curious Kids - The Explosive Science Show” and Days Out & Meals Out reviewsJenny,Days Out and Meals Out Reviewsrst arrived. 9signicance on our doorstep.called the “Light Pavilion” When we arrived at 10.45 we rst dierent angles when you visit. Today it was facing away question asked. There was re, explosions and hidden test The show was included in your entry price and was on twice a day, you just had to get a wrist band for the time you wanted when you rst arrived. The seats are on a rst come basis so I would always get into the queue 10 minutes before.First Light Pavilion - Next we walked up to the First Light Pavilion. Here you can uncover the inspirational heritage of Jodrell Bank. Inside this architecturally stunning building, you’ll nd a high tech exhibition telling the pioneering stories of the scientists and engineers that made history. Explore interactive displays, projections and artefacts as you journey from the early post-war days of Jodrell Bank, through the heights of the Space Race and the depths of the Cold War, to today’s world-leading discoveries. The interactive screens have some activities suitable for children, with quizzes or building the Lovell Telescope. There are a couple of little games and challenges. Some of the information may be a little complex so its good to read through the boards and screens with your children so you can help them get more from it.Science Shows - You can journey round the night sky in a traditional planetarium show which are pre bookable at £5 per person. However, there was another free show so we decided to see it. It was a specially-commissioned immersive lm on the Story of Jodrell Bank, narrated by Professor Brian Cox. It really shows o the planetarium brilliantly. With your head lent back, you can take in the full wall and ceiling screen. The images in the lm were beautiful and awe inspiring.Children’s Playground - Just out side the First Light Pavilion is a small children’s Playground. It has a climbing frame, swing and spinning disc.Book for May Half Term - There is a new show “Cap Com Go” which we haven’t seen which is on now and over May Half Term which makes it a brilliant family day out for the school holidays.Weekends & half term - 13:00, On July 16th 1969, three Astronauts blasted o to space to make the rst ever attempt to land humans on the Moon. This short lm allows you to relive the epic NASA Apollo 11 mission like never before. CAP COM GO! is suitable for astronauts of all ages Tickets £5, available as an add-on to general admission Running time – 25 minutes. Our verdict on Jodrell Bank - Jodrell Bank is the perfect place for families to explore their shared sense of curiosity and discover the wonders of science together. With it’s interactive displays, space shows, cafe, picnic areas, a playground, arboretum, and gift shop you can easily spend most of the day exploring and leaning. The fact your ticket becomes an annual pass makes it a really reasonably priced place to visit too. If you haven’t already been I would denitely recommend booking for May Half Term as their extra events during school holidays make it perfect for taking any age of child. They will always get something from their visit and probably more than you think they will.• Open Tues - Sun 10am - 5pm• Suitable for Pushchairs and Wheelchairs• Museum Shop, Children’s Play area & Picnics allowed• Arboretum to walk around• Two Cafes for lunch, cakes or a drink• They ask that you switch your phone to airplane mode. 14Kieran Leyland and Jamie Law have been inseparable since they rst met at the age of four in their primary school in Holmes Chapel. Their friendship ourished through their school years and continued as they ventured into college, university, and apprenticeships. Kieran moved to Liverpool to study Videography, while Jamie launched his career in personal training, initially learning the ropes at a local gym before expanding his expertise across Cheshire and eventually setting up his own practice in his garage, building a solid clientele. Throughout their separate professional journeys, they shared a dream of opening their own gym in the heart of their childhood village, a dream that evolved into a well-researched and robust business plan. With a solid business plan and a shared enthusiasm for tness, Kieran and Jamie secured the necessary investment to make their dream a reality, resulting in the establishment of Revolve Fitness. I recently visited their new gym at Manor Point business park, where they shared their future aspirations during a tour of the facility.Katy meets... Revolve Fitness & TrainingByKaty O’ReganThe gym’s layout is striking. Entering through a spacious, high-ceilinged reception leads directly to the main gym area, a 4500 square foot modern space with soft matted oors and soundproong panels, clearly showing they have already achieved much in their new setup.Jamie explained that nding the right location was their primary challenge, as they were committed to setting up in Holmes Chapel. After a year-long search, they found the ideal spot at Unit 2B, Manor Point. The gym boasts a comprehensive array of equipment. Kieran highlighted a dedicated weight area ranging from 2kg to 50kg, designed to ensure clients never have to wait for equipment. This accessibility and variety are central to their customer service philosophy. Our tour continued with an introduction to the machines provided by Primal, a top industry supplier. The facility caters to all aspects of tness with treadmills, rowing machines, bikes, Stairmasters, and even a mechanical treadmill for cardio workouts. Additionally, the gym features pull-up bars, parallettes, a modern prowler, kettlebells, and an Astro strip for bodyweight exercises, alongside various machines for a full-body workout. For someone like me, the array of equipment might seem daunting, but Jamie and Kieran’s expertise ensures all members can fully utilize each piece of equipment. The second oor includes warm showers, private changing rooms, and lockers. They are also developing a large mezzanine that will host rooms for a range of classes from yoga to strength and conditioning. A café area is planned to oer healthy beverages and eventually snacks. The upstairs currently hosts various classes including Mark Millward’s karate for kids and adults, Pilates with Kat, and holistic healing sessions with Vicky.Jamie and Kieran have realised their dream and the response since the gym opened has been overwhelmingly positive. With their ambitious plans for the future and the community’s enthusiastic reception, I am condent that Revolve Fitness will continue to thrive.

18Over the past few years the Local History Group of the U3A has produced small articles for the Villages Mag and you may wonder how we nd out all the information and how you could carry out your own research. There are many readily available sources both online and from documents and some of the more popular sources are listed below. You might want to learn about a building in the village or even your own house if it is old. A good source of information is the Cheshire Records Oce in Chester. Much of their information is online and the rst stage would be to explore their records. Any building existing in 1911 will have been recorded in the Land Tax survey which was carried out around that date. This will not only tell you who was occupying the property but Our local history...Article by Holmes Chapelu3a Local History Groupalso what rooms were in the property and what condition the building was in. The Records Oce also has a range of maps so you might be able to nd when the building was constructed. They might also have old deeds relating to the house or stored wills.Your interests might be about a particular institution or organisation in the village. In many cases old record books will have been sent to the Records Oce for safe keeping. You would, for example, nd the minutes of the Parish Council telling of the rst supply of piped water to the village from Middlewich and the arguments about supplying Cranage Hall. They also tell of the years of discussion about electric street lighting before its nal introduction in the 1930s. Currently we are researching the story of our Gooseberry Show and we will have more to tell about this later this year.Very often people may be interested in the story of a particular family. The census records which go back to 1841 and were repeated every ten years are an excellent source online. But also, there are electoral registers and directories which can be linked to particular families. Finally, for this brief summary, old newspapers can be an interesting source of new material. There is a web site where many newspapers are recorded covering all of the country. These are searchable so you can easily uncover new material. Many other newspaper records will be in the Records Libraries around the country and some newspapers, such as the Congleton Chronicle, have old copies available in their oces.

22A huge part of my job role now is picking the gyms that we want to work with BTG, I travel all over the U.K. visiting them. (Potentially the world soon.)This process has meant that I clock up thousands of miles travelling. We recently sat down with our board of trustees to discuss if there’s a way to make the process less labour intensive, maybe gyms could just ll out a detailed form online and automatically qualify to start receiving our clients? Surely we could ask about the qualications and facilities, read reviews, interview the owners online?Well after driving over two thousand miles in January my numb bum was starting to think maybe that’s something we really should be considering and then I visited Scotland.I managed to combine the trip to look at 2 gyms with a Crosst 2 qualication course I was attending on the Saturday & Sunday. I’ve been a gym owner for 4 years, I’ve done hundreds of classes and visited many gyms.Yet there I stood in front of the arches of CrossFit Glasgow, frozen, in tears a few feet from the entrance and in that moment, It all came ooding back.I remembered the rst time I ever walked into a Crosst gym. So completely terried to step forward into the unknown, but aware that lingering behind me was a life I didn’t want to be in anymore. What if I make an idiot of myself? What if I don’t know what to do? Numb bums and being a beginner again!Vicky,Bridging The Gap Mind MattersWhat if everyone ignores me?What if everyone stares at me? Will they judge me for being unt?I don’t know if I can do this.....I walked in and was met by 4 friendly sta faces and a wonderful group of people. Yes I was still nervous, but that initial interaction had me feeling like I could do it.I have to give a special mention to Joe, the trainer assigned to my group. You hear the phrase “be kind” banded around a lot but rarely do I get to see such genuine kindness displayed so authentically. Especially towards someone who was as inept as my fumbling, terried self.I went back to my hotel after the rst day and realised just how important my job is.When someone is struggling and they’ve come to BTG for support we have to make sure that we are sending them to the very best places.Because you get one chance at a rst impression. And the day someone gathers everything they have and walks into a gym it can be make or break.Therapy enabled me to walk into a gym, but it was CrossFit that saved my life. The gym assessments I make aren’t about equipment, facilities, size, or qualications. It’s about community, kindness and compassion. Remembering what it’s like to be a beginner, and being in it to help other people better their lives, physically and mentally. If you know a gym that aligns with what we do and they have space for fully funded new faces, get in touch so I can come and visit.Who Are BTG - Our mission is to Bridge The Gap faced by people trying to access support for their mental health, removing barriers to keeping people well, and preventing mental health crises. We champion a blended approach of physical and talking therapy as rst-line treatment for early-stage mental ill-health and we strive for this to be accessible to all, at the point of need.Take a look at www.BTG-mindmatters.org to complete an application.

26Michelle is a local Artist and Art Tutor, based on London Road in her Garden Studio. She oers weekly group classes for all abilities, 1:1 sessions and Acrylic Workshop evenings. Having a background in Scientic Illustration enabled Michelle to oer a unique experience on Saturday. On arrival, everyone was introduced to each Bird of Prey by Simon Butler, from Wings and Things, and given a wealth of information about their anatomy and behaviour. With instruction from Michelle, live sketching then took place, getting a real close up of the birds and their characteristic movements. Drawing live is very dierent from using a photograph- besides being more dicult, it enables you to sketch gestural lines for movement and demands you to focus and observe. We were lucky enough to have Luna, a 7 year old male Barn Owl, who was very experienced with humans, to model for us. Using a specic palette of Owl-Standing Art Lesson!Meet Michelle at a ‘Grand Day Out’ in Middlewich on 29th JuneWatercolour pigment, everyone was able to draw Luna by using their own photographs and observing him.Michelle encouraged everyone to think of the bird as a shape of shaded curved forms, working light to dark and to look through the markings. Details such as markings, eyes and that essential highlight in the eye should follow. Finally, everyone was able to hold their favourite bird, cementing the experience as unforgettable. The next Bird of Prey Art Experience will be in September. You can nd out more about Michelle’s art and events at michelledicksonart.co.ukA Grand Day Out in Middlewich on 29th June, Middlewich Victoria Hall, Civic Way 10.30am -4.30pm

It’s a favourite spot for many, whether it’s basking in the sunshine in their expansive beer garden, joining in the annual Christmas carol festivities, or indulging in one of their famous hanging kebabs. Living above the pub, Martin is deeply rooted in village life, raising his family here where his children attend the local school. He cherishes the community spirit. The George’s menu has always been a hit, oering fresh, diverse dishes catering to all dietary preferences. Recently, the culinary team welcomed a new head chef, Rob Howe, a chef with an impressive background having worked under renowned chefs like Bryan Webb at Tyddyn Llan in North Wales and Gary Usher at Elite Bistros. Rob is eager to put his mark on the menu.Rob is introducing some exciting changes, and by the time Villages Magazine is delivered, many of these Katy & Jenny meet... Perfect for any celebration, these can be booked 48 hours in advance and are available from noon until 5pm, Monday to Saturday.Getting to know Martin and discovering the innovative changes at The George has been delightful. It’s clear that with these new additions, The George will continue to be an integral part of Holmes Chapel for many years to come. Our very own Jenny from Days Out and Meals Out is an expert on afternoon teas, and she visited The George to indulge in their new oering. The George & Dragon in Holmes Chapel held a soft launch for their brand new Afternoon Tea. It is the rst time the Cheshire pub has had an afternoon tea on their menu so as a afternoon tea connoisseur I was excited to see what it was like. Their new chef, Rob Howe brings the idea to the George along with a fantastic new Summer menu. Both are being launched on Wednesday 15th May.What was on their Afternoon TeaThe sandwich layer had a lovely, varied selection. It had some classic nger sandwiches of beef and horseradish, but what I really liked was the more adventurous sandwich options. A fruity coronation chicken sat on a slide of rustic bruschetta and the tiniest soft brioche roll lled with creamy egg mayonnaise. The cake layer was a picture of prettiness. The slice of Victoria sponge was so fresh, the sponge literally bounced. It was heavily laden with thick cream and jam which made it absolutely delicious. There was a slice of carrot cake, again you could so tell this was homemade and so fresh. It was satisfyingly light with the sweetest, creamiest frosting on top. Finally, a chocolate delight of a sticky chocolate brownie which was sinfully good. The layer was nished o with fresh berries and a couple of macaroons too. The top layer was the classic scone. I loved how the double cream had been served as a quenelle which made it look so elegant. The scone had a slight crisp to the edge while lovely and soft in the middle. With the cream and little pot of jam it made the perfect nish to the afternoon tea.My verdictIt was heavenly, all homemade and a delight for the taste buds. The whole experience was lovely. Sat in their sunny conservatory, sipping a prosecco and chatting to a fellow afternoon tea lover is a great way to spend an afternoon. The sta are always so friendly at the George so it was no surprise they were attentively on hand to top up our endless cups of tea.The varied selection of sandwiches and cakes were well put together, complimenting each other and made the whole experience wonderful.Days Out & Meals Out reviews

36It’s Friday night in the village, at the Victoria Club in Holmes Chapel. The sunshine is nally with us! It’s lovely to see so many people out enjoying themselves. They are all here to show support for Holmes Chapel Cricket Club, who, launched its junior team oering in 2022. The momentum that the club has gained in that time is nothing short of amazing, now with over 70 players in the Junior Section. The junior team is having its rst outdoor practice of the season, which has got o to a very rainy start this year! Friday night practice is very popular with mum’s and dad’s who can enjoy a drink at the club whilst watching the youngsters. It’s lovely to see so many excited children attending training, and they look very smart in their new seasons kit. They are having team photographs taken and I’m proud to say this year’s Juniors sponsor this year is Dales, which is exciting for us Community Matters... Ultimately, the vision is that Holmes Chapel Cricket Club is a wonderful place for kids in the village of all ages and abilities to enjoy their learning and developing lifelong skills on and o the pitch”.There are multiple teams running U7, U9, U11 & U13s with matches scheduled every week from now until the end of the season. 50The National Trust site of Hare Hill in Alderley, Nr Maccleseld is a tranquil wooded garden, surrounded by historic parkland, with a delightful walled garden at its heart. It was construction as a country estate in the 18th century, then nally the National Trust took over the ownership in 1977.The site features spectacular white perennial borders, a pergola and wire horse sculptures within the rose beds. There is also a woodland garden with many rhododendrons and azaleas, and pond areas with rustic wooden bridges to walk across. The surrounding parkland oers a permissive path to Alderley Edge, open at the same time as the garden. Hare Hill is a sweet little place for a gentle walk around and to sit and relax inside the walled garden. On a sunny afternoon in May my daughter and I visited the gardens as I knew their owers beds would be looking lovely at this time of year.During the summer months the gardens are lled with pots of tulips, foxgloves, and summer boarders of colour wherever you look. The highlight of the walled garden has to be their white pergola laden with beautiful wisteria. It is quite striking and looks gorgeous. You can take the path below it and sit on a bench hidden away in the wall and look out to the garden and pass the time people watching.Wooded Garden - Outside the walled gardens are paths that lead you around the woodland. Along the paths are beautiful rhododendrons. In every shade of white, pink and purple these bushes are in full bloom in May so well worth a visit.Pond Life - In the wooden garden there Days Out & Meals Out reviewsJenny,Days Out and Meals Out Reviewsis the pond area with 3 rustic wooden bridges that cross over. These are great for encouraging your children to explore and look at things dierently.Extra Activities - As with any National Trust site they put on extra events and activities during school holidays. They do an Easter Egg hunt in April and children’s yoga classes in the summer.Bird Spotting - The Bird Hide at Hare Hill is a quiet and peaceful place to sit, do a spot of bird watching and listen to the chirps and chatterings of the many winged wonders of the woodlands. This Congleton-based enterprise not only fulls the creative needs of its clients but also continually pushes the boundaries of what is possible in the world of design and technology, making it a proud emblem of local entrepreneurship and innovation.engraving machine, which was merely the rst step towards including CO2, bre, MOPA, and 3D lasers, along with any shape, complemented by a range of nishing services like polishing, colour lling, ocking, electro-plating, and design phase with 3D CAD drawings to the nal creation of moulds and chains and ndings to producing and Alan Rogers, with the invaluable contribution of Alan’s son, Ash, this bespoke packaging for those aiming to market their creations.A standout process is their nano-ceramic e-coating, which adds vibrant colour to metal components and jewellery. This cutting-edge solution is applied to a range of products, enhancing both their aesthetic appeal and durability. The coating is particularly eective on items with a high polish, oering protection against scratches, tarnishing, and fading. Available in various colours, it allows designers to craft unique, appealing items that cater to a wide range of tastes. The hypoallergenic nature of the nano-ceramic e-coating makes it ideal for those with sensitive skin or allergies. It stands up well to environmental challenges such as moisture, chemicals, and UV exposure, ensuring that the jewellery remains tarnish-resistant and easy to maintain. In addition to their technological prowess, their manufacturing arm named Devanet has ventured into the manufacturing of belt buckles, responding to customer demand. This venture has expanded to include a vast selection of styles available for purchase individually or in bulk, which can be personalised or treated with nano-ceramic coating. Remarkably, they even supplied customised belts for Team GB at the Rio Olympics. The personal journeys of the team members are as compelling as their professional achievements. Ash joined the business six years ago after a challenging battle with lymphoma. His recovery intertwined with his work at Diamond Engravers, where he has become an integral part of the team, working closely with his father, Alan. In addition to all the classroom-based studies, student osteopaths undertake over 1000 hours of supervised clinical experience with real patients3. It is a criminal oence to oer osteopathy unless you are registered with the General Osteopathic Council4.Osteopathy is not suitable for babies or elderly people, or during pregnancy5.Osteopaths are trained to prescribe medicines6. Osteopaths are not recognised by the NHS7. There are over 10,000 osteopaths in the UKAnswers: the rst three statements are true, the others are false. Osteopaths are recognised by NHS England as Allied Health Professionals, and a number of osteopaths work within NHS settings. There are around 5,500 Osteopaths registered in the UK, so this is a small professional group. Although Osteopaths do not prescribe medicine, they do advise on exercises, social activities and rehabilitation programmes to support your wellbeing. People of every age and stage in life can benet from Osteopathy – it is a very safe form of therapy. It’s not surprising that many people are unfamiliar with Osteopathy. This is because until relatively recently there weren’t so many Osteopaths in Osteopathy, Facts vs. MythsBy Elizabeth Elanderthe northern half of the country. Historically all the training colleges were in the Home Counties and London, so most osteopathic practices were established down there. However, ever since an osteopathy degree programme was launched in Staordshire in 2005, we have seen more graduates setting up their practices in the northern counties and Midlands.Osteopaths provide treatment for a wide range of conditions. Some of the most common are:Osteoarthritis. Low back pain, sciatica. Frozen shoulder, elbow and wrist pain. Neck pain, headaches. Postural strain or imbalance. Hip pain and rehabilitation after hip replacement surgery. Injuries from car accidents, sports, falls. Loss of mobility and sti joints. You can locate your nearest Osteopath by using the ‘search the Register’ service on the website of the statutory regulator, the General Osteopathic Council: osteopathy.org.ukHere you can enter your location, for example, Congleton or Holmes Chapel, and a list of local practitioners will appear, together with details of the service they oer.If you are housebound or in too much pain to travel, some osteopaths oer home visits. A rst appointment will take about an hour. The osteopath will take a full case history and conduct some gentle tests and checks to arrive at a diagnosis. They will explain what they are doing at every stage and will seek your consent before proceeding with treatment or referral to a medical professional. Sometimes just one appointment can make a big dierence, although some patients see their osteopath on a regular basis to help maintain their mobility, independence and sense of wellbeing. As well as being the local Holmes Chapel Osteopath, Elizabeth Elander is also a Clinical Supervisor at the Stoke-on-Trent Osteopathic Teaching Clinic.

66me that the stoves cater to a range of needs and preferences, from purely aesthetic enhancements to essential heating solutions, particularly vital in rural areas where gas may not be accessible.Modern wood-burning stoves and replaces, celebrated for their low carbon emissions and the utilization of renewable, sustainable fuel, also address the recent concerns about smoke emissions. It’s crucial in Smoke Control Areas, as designated by DEFRA, where regulations require that any wood burner installed must emit less than 3 grams of smoke per hour. Although Holmes Chapel and its surrounding villages are not within such a control zone, opting for an eco-friendly stove is a proactive choice for environmental stewardship. The Stove Industry Alliance highlights the sector’s signicant advancements, noting that criticisms often stem from outdated comparisons to open res, older stoves, and the use of poor-quality wood. The Stove Yard team, adept in industry regulations and the latest innovations, provides top-notch advice and supports the DEFRA ‘Burn Better’ campaign, which promotes methods that enhance air quality and protect health.Upon choosing your stove, Russell’s team facilitates connections with trusted Hetas registered installers. Additionally, The Stove Yard oers a comprehensive range of re-related accessories, including innovative storage solutions for logs, specialized cleaning products, and a variety of fuels. They can also modernize your space with stylish re surrounds, hearths, mantels, and everything needed for a media wall with mood-enhancing lighting. For those who might not be able to install a traditional wood burner, electric stoves are available that mimic the aesthetic and provide easy, eective heating.“When is the best time to install a log burner?” I asked Russell, the knowledgeable manager of The Stove Yard, nestled o Manor Lane in Holmes Chapel. Without hesitation, his reply was: “Now.”With spring unfolding and summer on the horizon, the chilly evenings of autumn and winter might feel like a distant memory. Yet, according to Russell, this is precisely the time to start planning and preparing. Russell’s journey to The Stove Yard began after a demanding 16-year career as a chef, where the long hours began to impact his family life. This led him to switch careers, and he has since become a xture at The Stove Yard, mastering all aspects of the showroom’s oerings—not just the wood-burning stoves. The showroom itself, one of the largest in the UK, is located in Cheshire. These stoves provide ecient heating and realistic wood-burning eects without the need for log storage, and contemporary gas res are designed to t almost any space, even those without a chimney. As our conversation concluded, Russell excitedly showed me to another section of the showroom, dedicated to outdoor cooking—a personal passion of mine, regardless of the season. The display included the prestigious Big Green Egg, known for its versatility and recognised as a BBC Gardeners’ World Best Buy for its performance and build quality. Other notable products were the Alfa Forni pizza ovens and the ground breaking Gozney, touted as the world’s rst portable, lightweight stone bake oven.Russell revealed plans for upcoming special cooking weekends at The Stove Yard, where he’ll showcase these outdoor culinary tools using his chef skills. Anticipation for these events is high, and I’m keen to experience them rst hand—assuredly from the front of the line! For updates on these events, check The Stove Yard’s Facebook page or inquire in-store.Russell and The Stove Yard team have been part of the Holmes Chapel community for 19 years, starting out at another location on the industrial estate before moving to where they are now in a larger space. They have big plans for the future, including turning the front part of the showroom into a kitchen to demonstrate their range of log-burning cookers. For now, though, the range they have on display is vast, covering all bases for both indoor heating and outdoor cooking, and I plan to return to check out the changes in a few months.

Lymm Railway is the perfect location if you want a little stroll out with a stop at a cafe for lunch or an ice cream. It’s a safe, o road family-friendly walk along an old railway line in Altrincham, which is part of the Trans Pennine Trail. We parked just o Seamon’s Road in the Trans Pennine Trail car park WA14 5RF. It’s only small, but we managed to get a space. You can get straight onto the trail from this carpark. The trail is along an old railway line, which stopped being used in 1985, and the tracks have been removed. These sorts of paths are always the same. Lovely, long, well surfaced wide paths with no risks of cars and perfect for pushchairs, bikes, and scooters.Along this trail, there are a number of great places to come o at to nd a spot of lunch or an ice cream. The rst place to come o after about 1.5km is at the bridge where you can join school lane. Along this lane is The Dunham Barn. A lovely cafe, with plenty of seating, serving lunches, drinks and cakes. Once o the Trail you have to walk along the road and pavement for about 10-15mins.Further along the trail at 3km, you can come o at Station Road at a gate which crosses the Path. As you come o the trail, to the left you will soon nd The Rope & Anchor Pub and to your right is a sign for Dunham Apple Barn which is a shop and cafe just further along the road.Go left and walk along the road. First you will come to The Rope & Anchor Pub which has a lovely beer garden and play area. A bit further along Station road you will get to Dunham Massey Ice Cream farm, only about 5-10 mins away.Dunham Massey Ice Cream Farm is Days Out & Meals Out reviewsJenny,Days Out and Meals Out Reviewsa lovely Ice Cream Parlour and cafe with both indoor and outdoor seating. The serve pizza and toasties as well as a large choice of drinks and of course ice creams. There are also some cute farm animals which you can stroke and buy some food for.The path is really good for bikes and scooters, plus the incentive of walking to get an ice cream always helps little legs I nd so this makes it a great family walk.As it’s a there and back type of walk, you can go as far as you like and simply turn round. The full distance of this section of The Trans Pennine Trail would take you all the way to Lymm & is roughly 6 miles one way. For condent riders, this would be a great distance with treats along the way.If you would prefer to turn the walk into circular, you can drop down on to The Bridgewater Canal o School Road which is a gorgeous canal to walk along and of course you can spot the narrow boats going past. Here is a map of the route we took which included going to Dunham Massey Ice Cream farm rst for an ice cream and then to the Dunham Barn for lunch, then we walked back to our car along the canal. 76Productivity and maximising it is all about discipline. Knowing when it is time to work and get things done is about overcoming obstacles. It’s about shutting down what’s around you and focusing on the task at hand. The reality, however, is we are all guilty of distraction. The lure of doing something else is sometimes just too much. Procrastination leads to stagnation. I see that a lot on LinkedIn.The reality is though, productivity is the result of a happy workforce. Striking a balance between work and play is an extremely hard thing to do though, but it can be done. And there is a reason as business owners, we should be looking to do so. One of the most important predictors of employee satisfaction is work exibility. People like having choices and freedom. This can be in found in many ways. Flexitime Walking the tightrope of work and playByRich Wilcockis a popular way of providing choice and it also puts trust in employees – Something which is important in so many ways. But also, simple things like simplicity in technology or more holiday allowance can do similar things. It is all about giving team members the freedom to choose how to be the most eective in their role while increasing employee morale. Even encouraging and providing time for self-care can improve workplace productivity. The myth that employees cannot be productive while working at home was eectively shattered with the COVID-19 pandemic. Research showed how even cutting out an oce commute can boost productivity, so it is worth considering that kind of exibility for your team. Of course, too much freedom can have an adverse eect to productivity, but simple, clear expectations and guidelines can ensure that it is kept on the right track. You’ve also probably noticed its quite warm outside. And working-from-home in the sun is a challenge that many (including myself) can struggle with. But productivity can be improved by your surroundings. So, look for a way to incorporate the pleasant weather into your daily working routine. Studies have shown that natural light can improve mood, relieve stress and in turn, improve productivity. So, perhaps try answering the morning calls or emails in your garden instead of hunched over the kitchen table. I often nd it is better for concentration as well. The reality of the working world in 2024 is that there is a new normal. Diverse ways of working are here to stay. There is of course, a place for working in the oce still. But even here, maximising productivity in a healthy way should be encouraged. Improving oce space, minimising meetings which could easily be an email, and incentivising colleagues can make real dierences to productivity and even the bottom line. And thats what it is all about. Improving the bottom line. And taking the time to see how colleagues are using their time can really be the dierence.
