Like many parents, we’re doing our best to support him through this important time, and we’re already looking ahead to what’s next.Recently, he was lucky enough to land a weekend job at Sparks Lane Nurseries, working with the brilliant Brian Lowe. It’s been more than just a job, it’s sparked a real interest in horticulture. After a visit to an open day at Reaseheath College, he’s now applied to study Horticulture and Landscaping. We’re incredibly grateful to Brian for introducing him to the world of plants and inspiring a potential future career path. It’s a joy to see him so motivated and excited for what lies ahead. But before college begins, he has a well-earned break to look forward to. Once the exams are over, his dad is taking him on a long-planned adventure to Japan , a once-in-a-lifetime experience that’s been years in the making. I’ll be staying home with the dogs and keeping things ticking along with the magazine, but I’m sure I’ll be getting plenty of photo updates as they explore Tokyo and beyond!I hope June brings you sunshine, calm, and maybe even a little adventure of your own. As always, this issue is packed with local stories, events, and businesses to discover, perfect for enjoying with a cuppa in the garden.Katy x

8It wouldn’t be right as I’m writing this, to not acknowledge that the sun has graced this little corner of Cheshire for pretty much a month now. Last time I talked about having bbq’s and drinks with good friends in the warm evenings, and indeed we’ve managed to do this on more than one occasion. It seems to be my place wherever I go to magic up jugs of something nice for everyone to imbibe, from what are sometimes appearing to be the results of several continental holidays from the 1990’s!Most of the time, as long as the basic rules of cocktails and spritzers are followed, something delish and easy to drink can be rattled up in no time, despite any random ingredients you may nd, and the party can crack on. For long term readers of my page, you know that that means 2:1:1 (spirits:sweet:tart) for cocktails, and a 3:2:1 (wine/prosecco:liqueur:soda) for spritzers will give you a nicely balanced drink. From the bar, with Rich...Rich, The Beer Emporium Bottle BankWe’ve seen a missive rise in the number of people wanting spritzers these past few weeks, Aperol of course being the most popular. The origins of this go back to the 1950’s, but to fully understand where that came from, you need to head back even further to the late 1800’s and northern Italy, where in the Veneto region the Austrian soldiers stationed there, wanted a way to weaken the Italian wine they were being oered, and so added a splash (or spritz in German!) of water to dilute the wine.As time progressed, and tastes and drinks evolved. Still water became soda water, which then became prosecco, which then led to the addition of regional liqueurs and aperitif’s. Aperol itself was created in 1919 by brothers Luigi and Silvio Barbieri. As the gastronomic revolution continued in post-war Italy, a concerted advertising campaign saw Aperol overtake the other well-known Italian liqueur, Campari. It was seen as a luxurious luxury aperitif for lunchtimes and sundowners, and given Veneto was at the peak of chic fashion and culinary delights, it was only tting that Aperol rode those coattails exceptionally well. It wasn’t until the 2000’s that Campari, their long time competitor, bought out Aperol and included it in their stable of trendy cocktail ingredients, and later, a trendy drink in its own right. That trend has not abated, and we’re now smack bang in the middle of a spritzer renaissance. Perhaps because Aperol has a little fatigue from drinkers who have been bombarded by Campari’s advertising, but there are now often a number of options on cocktail menus around the globe, examples being blood orange spritz, Seville Spritz or even a watermelon spritz with melon liqueur, Martini Bianco, Luxardo Bitter Bianco and prosecco… all exceptionally delicious in the sunshine we’ve been having here!Until next time, see you at the bar

12The Partnership team had a busy rst half of May.We decided to have the annual Walk to School on the 8th May to coincide with the 80th Anniversary of VE Day, so the theme for everyone taking part – young and not so young alike - was red, white and blue. There was a good turn out and the walk from Brooklands to the Hermitage Primary School was attended by our two Dane Valley Ward Councillors and Diane Tams Vice Chair of the Parish Council. This provided a great opportunity for communication between residents and those who represent them. The Councillors are mostly only too aware of the problems for pedestrians but they could at least explain that they are trying to improve the situation! The other group with Parish Council Chair Chris Jackson and our PCSOs set o from the Cottons estate to Holmes Chapel Primary School on Middlewich Road. Each route has a point where it is necessary to cross a busy road: on this particular morning the Fire Service kindly turned out and ushered both parents and children safely over the road. “What we All Want Are Proper Pedestrian Crossings to be Able to Cross Safely Every Day.”Holmes Chapel Partnership... Get activeby Peter Whiers, ChairmanFind out more: hcpartnership.org.ukMay 11th saw a new venture for the Partnership: a Junior Fun Run in the Dane Meadow. The sun shone and the Meadow was a beautiful setting for the event. The runners completed a gure of eight twice and got a medal for their eorts. Registration took place on Daresbury Close overlooking the Meadow and refreshments were provided outside the home of Gill Bradeld whose idea it was to stage the run. The feedback was very positive from participants and those who volunteered to marshal the proceedings – thanks go to all those who made it possible! See you again next year?!Our next event is organising the stalls at the Village Fair in August but before then we will hopefully have a new Self Guided Harry Styles map on our website, copies of the Holmes Chapel Station artwork for sale in the form of postcards and posters and, of course, have published a couple more Community Newsletters www.hcpartnership.org.uk/community-newsletter.

16Holmes Chapel RUFC, a family-based club established in 1984, celebrated a major milestone in summer 2024 with the launch of its rst-ever Junior Team (School Year 8, September 2024).Now, after an unforgettable debut season, a bold new chapter has begun. The squad showed remarkable commitment, resilience, and growth, travelling across Wirral, Liverpool, Cheshire, and Greater Manchester to face some of the region’s most established teams. Despite the tough competition, they produced a string of impressive results with hard-earned victories and spirited performances.A huge part of this success is down to Head Coach Mark Concar, whose belief in the club’s vision and dedication to developing young talent has been inspiring. Our coaching team — Andy, Dave, Nick, and Scottie — all RFU qualied, brought energy and experience to every session. The team was also supported by four fantastic Under-18 mentors — Jasmine, George, Holmes Chapel RUFC, a season to rememberFind out more www.hcrufc.comHarry, and James — whose encouragement helped foster the players’ condence and love of the game. This season has laid a strong foundation for the future, and Holmes Chapel RUFC couldn’t be prouder. With passion, belief, and community backing, the future of rugby here looks bright. It’s been a busy year o the pitch too. We’ve built a diverse, nine-strong committee and are hugely grateful to our amazing Parent and Carer volunteers for their time and energy. As part of the wider HC community, we took part in the Santa Sleigh fundraiser, HC Christmas Markets, and the Village Summer Fayre.Local support has been incredible, with many businesses donating prizes to our fundraising events. A highlight was welcoming former international star Freddie Tuilagi for two brilliant Rugby Skills Camps — with another lined up this July! Our sell-out Comedy Night, hosted by Comedy In a Van at the Community Centre, was such a hit we’re making it an annual event! And we’re wrapping up the season with a North Wales tour, followed by our summer training and the much-loved August residential trip to Stanley Head.Looking ahead, we’re thrilled about our rst international tour to Belgium in 2026 — an exciting chance to experience rugby on the European stage and create lifelong memories.A huge thank you to our Team Sponsors: ADModular Home, Sam Dale & Son, Elixir Software, Arnold Clark, The Barbershop, HC Parish Council, Massey Feeds, Phil Davies Butchers, and Bidlea Dairy. 20Based in Crewe, A1 Investigations Bureau is far more than the gumshoe stereotype we see in American lms. At the heart of the business is Anna, a legal graduate who, after joining the company as an oce administrator, quickly found her feet and passion in the world of private investigations. The Bureau was originally founded in 1988 by Anna’s business partner Roger. With humble beginnings in Wrexham, where it was once known as Wrexham and Clwyd investigations, it has grown into a national operation with a network of trained agents – many of whom are ex-police or ex-military – oering services to both corporate and private clients. While private investigators can often be met with scepticism, Anna is quick to point out that everything A1 does is legal and above board. “We’re governed by bodies like the World Association of Professional Investigators and the SIA,” Katy meets... Anna from A1 Investigations BureauByKaty O’Reganshe explains. “We don’t hack phones or break the law. Most of our work is about surveillance, tracing, and gathering evidence.”The scope of their work is surprisingly broad. For businesses, A1 oers corporate debugging, employee absenteeism investigations, and fraud detection. For private individuals, they are often called upon to conduct indelity surveillance, trace missing persons, or even verify cohabitation for legal proceedings. One area Anna is keen to grow is appeal work – where the agency is brought in to investigate cases where someone may have been wrongly convicted. “We’ve worked with solicitors and families to gather new evidence, speak to witnesses and help build a stronger case. It can be long-winded, but the outcomes can be life-changing,” she says.A1’s agents also conduct process serving, often handling sensitive legal documents ranging from statutory demands to non-molestation orders, and they occasionally provide bodyguard services for events, high-prole individuals or situations where personal safety is at risk.Despite the serious nature of their work, it’s the human element that keeps Anna passionate. “I love that every day is dierent – one day it’s surveillance, the next it’s helping someone locate a long-lost relative. We’ve even been asked to nd a dog!”Anna’s mission is to raise awareness that these services exist locally. “People often think what we do only exists in lms,” she laughs. “But we’re here, we’re real, and we’re here to help.”If you’re an ex-police or military professional looking for freelance investigation work, A1 Investigations Bureau would love to hear from you.

28Could a Heat Pump Be the Cosy, Eco-Friendly Upgrade Your Home’s Been Waiting For?Thinking about upgrading your heating system? Heat pumps are quietly becoming one of the UK’s most talked-about home improvements — and for good reason. They’re low-carbon, energy-ecient, and could help future-proof your home as we move away from fossil fuels. But let’s talk brass tacks. Installing a heat pump is more than a like-for-like boiler swap — it’s a thoughtful upgrade that sets your home up for long-term comfort and eciency. Thankfully, there’s a generous helping hand available: the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS).The BUS grant, launched in 2022 and boosted in October 2023, oers Eco-Friendly Heating Upgrade for your HomeByNick, W-Heathomeowners in England and Wales a lump sum of up to £7,500 towards the cost of installing an air source heat pump. It’s part of a wider push to help us all reduce carbon emissions and make our homes more energy-ecient.The grant is paid directly to your installer and taken o your nal bill, which means less paperwork and no need to claim money back. While it won’t usually cover the full cost of installation, it takes a big chunk out of the bill — especially when you choose a trusted local installer who can guide you through the process.A heat pump doesn’t burn fuel – it extracts heat from the air outside and transfers it indoors, even in winter. It runs at a lower temperature than traditional boilers, so your radiators might feel cooler, but your home will still be perfectly warm and welcoming. Before installation, it’s important to make your home as energy-ecient as possible — think loft insulation, double glazing, and cavity wall lling. Your installer will carry out a full heat loss calculation to design a system that’s tailored to your home, including the right size of heat pump, hot water cylinder and any other elements needed. If you’re considering making the switch, W Heat — your local, experienced installer — can walk you through the process from survey to installation. They’ll help assess your property, apply the BUS grant on your behalf, and install a system designed to keep your home comfortable for years to come. With proper servicing, a well-installed heat pump can last over 15 years. Cosy, quiet and low carbon — it might just be the warmest welcome you give your home this year.

34Ten Years at the Heart of the Village: The Story Behind the Garage That Goes the Extra MileIt’s not every day you nd a garage with a story as heartfelt and full of character as the one run by Simon and his wife in the heart of our village. This year, they celebrate ten years since relocating their well-established family business to its current site, a move that has only strengthened their ties to the community. The business itself goes way back. Founded by Simon’s parents, Mark and Elaine, in 1970 in Poynton it later moved to Cheadle Hulme in 1977. For decades, it was a staple of the local scene there until the site became too large to manage after Simon’s father sadly passed away. Eventually, they made the Katy meets... Auto LinkByKaty O’Regandecision to sell up and look for somewhere new, and that’s when the current location became home.Although Simon and his wife live in Maccleseld, the garage is perfectly positioned by the motorway, making it a convenient stop for locals and motorway-goers alike. The previous owner, Mike, who ran it under a dierent name, still pops in part-time, lending a hand and keeping the community feel alive.Over the past decade, the business has grown steadily. Many of their loyal customers followed them from Cheadle Hulme, and now a whole new generation of clients from the village and beyond has found their way to the workshop. In fact, much of their reputation comes not just from their solid mechanical work, but from their uncanny knack for rescuing people in need, families on their way to Glastonbury, people emigrating to Spain (pets and all), and even a 107-year-old WWII veteran recently en route to receive an award from the King.Simon and his team work on all types of vehicles, with a growing reputation for van servicing and classic cars. Cameron, their trainee mechanic, joined them just over a year ago and is already proving to be a real asset. Originally trained as a chef, he made the leap into the motor trade and hasn’t looked back. With a calm, practical approach and a willingness to learn, Cameron is now a familiar and trusted face to regulars, many of whom now ask for him by name. The long-term plan is for Cameron to eventually take over the business. He’s learning the ropes with the aim of eventually taking the reins, guided by Simon’s decades of experience. It’s a testament to their values: investing in the next generation while staying rooted in the same honest, community-rst service that’s kept the business thriving for over 50 years. Here’s to the next ten years, and the road ahead perhaps with Cameron in the driver’s seat.

3838Back in 2007, my life took an unexpected turn. While living in Bahrain, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. At the time, doctors weren’t entirely sure what was happening – I was even tested for leukaemia. Eventually, it became clear that my spleen was destroying my platelets, and I became extremely unwell.I spent weeks on end in hospital. The nurses became like family, and my doctor truly became my saviour. It was a challenging time, and following the removal of my spleen, I knew I needed to focus on recovery – both physically and mentally. That’s when I found Pilates.I started with gentle mat-based sessions to rebuild my strength and slowly reconnect with my body. As I grew stronger, I discovered Reformer Pilates – and everything changed. The Reformer is a dynamic piece of equipment that uses springs, pulleys, and a sliding carriage to provide resistance-based movement. It looks a bit futuristic, but it’s wonderfully supportive and incredibly eective. What I love most is how adaptable it is – whether you’re recovering from injury, managing chronic pain, or looking to improve posture, balance, and exibility, the Reformer can be tailored to your needs. After returning to the UK with my daughter and parents, I knew I wanted to share what I’d learned. I retrained professionally, earning a Diploma in Mat Pilates, qualications in Reformer Pilates, and becoming a Level 3 Personal Trainer. I turned my own health journey into something bigger: helping others nd strength in movement.Today, my studio is a safe and welcoming space for everyone – from How Pilates Transformed my LifeBy Kat’s Studioteenagers to my inspiring 90-year-old regular. I’ve worked with people managing arthritis, recovering post-surgery, and even those just looking for a more mindful way to exercise. One of my favourite stories is of a client who came to me after a hip replacement—barely able to bend, and now? She’s doing lunges on the Reformer and feeling stronger every week!Reformer Pilates has helped me in more ways than I can count. It’s not just my career – it’s my therapy, my passion, and a daily reminder of how far I’ve come. Even though I now take antibiotics daily due to my compromised immune system, I refuse to let that dene me.If you’re curious about trying Pilates—whether you’re new or returning—I’d love to welcome you to Kat’s Studio.Let’s do this – for strength, for balance, and for you.VOLUNTEERS NEEDEDWhere people withDown syndrome learnLife Skills such as:Flexible volunteering to suit youSATURDAYS10am - 2pmSuppor the delivery of our Learning LabprogrammeDOWN SYNDROMECHESHIRE HUBDENTON DRIVE,NORTHWICH,CWE 7LUCooking Digital SkillsCommunication SkillsTime Management Living IndependentInterview Preparation TeamworkEmail volunteer@dscheshire.org.uk for more infomationNORTHWICH10K RUNWe need you!We have run spaces available.Sunday 29th June9am - 11amContact admin@dscheshire.org.ukfor more infomationTHETHRIVECLUBWEEKDAYS9.30AM - 4PMDOWN SYNDROME CHESHIRE HUBACTIVITIES FOR PEOPLE WITH DOWN SYNDROME AGED 18+.MAKE NEW FRIENDS AND DEVELOP NEW SKILLS IN A SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT WHILST HAVING FUN!EMAIL LUCYM@DSCHESHIRE.ORG.UKTO FIND OUT MORE!Visit our website for the latest newswww.dscheshire.org.uk

46Should you avoid solicitors who don’t charge fairly?A lot of legal services are charged for on an ‘hourly rate’ basis. It should be fairly easy for you to compare the hourly rates of dierent law rms if they publish those hourly rates on their websites. However, what you won’t know is that virtually all law rms charge for their time in minimum ‘units’ of 6 minutes. So for example, you are charged 6 minutes for a call which lasts 1 minute. When Louise Halford and Robin Charrot set up Evolve Family Law in 2015, they thought that this was not fair to clients. Therefore, Evolve Family Law has always charged by the minute, so a client who has a phone call lasting 1 minute is charged 1 minute for that call. You may think that paying for an extra few minutes of your solicitor’s time isn’t a big deal. However, over a long case all those extra minutes can add up to additional charges of thousands of pounds.Should you avoid solicitors who keep too much of your money? There may be times when law rms hold money for clients, for example when a solicitor has to collect the assets of someone who has died before distributing them to beneciaries. Interest is earned on the money while it is held by the law rm. You might think that the law rms would pay the interest earned on their clients’ money to their clients. However, a Law Society survey published earlier this Let’s talk legal... Your questions answeredByEvolve Family Lawyear said that in 2024 the average law rm made around £43,000 per partner of additional prot from interest earned on clients’ money. The Solicitors’ Regulation Authority is likely to clamp down on this in 2025. Evolve Family Law have always thought that this is totally unfair on clients, so apart from the rst £50 (to meet administration expenses), they have always paid every penny of interest earned to their clients.Evolve Family Law’s new mediation serviceIn June 2025, Evolve Family Law will be launching a new mediation service, led by solicitor Eluned Roberts (pictured), for separating couples who need independent help to resolve any dispute they have regarding their nances, their children, or their pets. Founding director Robin Charrot said: “We are really happy to oer this additional service to clients. Mediation is almost always the best and cheapest way to resolve disputes, and the Cheshire towns and villages we cover do not have enough mediators who have sucient experience and knowledge of the law. Eluned has an amazing empathetic approach and we think our future clients will benet hugely from this extra service.”

52One of those was Major Toler, who wrote a personal diary of his exploits which was recently obtained by Stewart from the University of Ohio:His father lived at Swettenham Hall and was Chairman of Cheshire County Council between 1935 and 1940.Ian Toler was educated at Maccleseld Grammar School and Oxford, where he took degrees in Physics and Engineering. Whilst at Oxford he joined the University Air Squadron.Later, in 1940, he was evacuated from Dunkirk as the rst Battery Commander of 1st Airlanding Anti-Tank Battery, Royal Artillery. In the same year, he was married to Joan Adshead, the daughter of the Adshead family of Kermincham Hall, and they moved to ‘The Ash’ (opposite The Manor House) in Goostrey. In November 1942, he transferred to the Glider Pilot Regiment and by 1944, he was the Ocer Commanding B Squadron Glider Pilot Regiment, ying between RAF Cranage in Byley, Ringway and RAF Brize Norton.Among other wartime missions, Major Toler took part in the Battle of Arnhem, during Operation Market Garden, the largest airborne landing in military history involving 4,600 aircraft delivering 65,000 military personnel into Holland to capture major bridges leading to Germany.Leading his squadron of twenty gliders, each one carrying up to 40 personnel, vehicles and artillery to land near Eindhoven, he successfully spent the next eight days in and around Arnhem ghting in some of the ercest battles of WW2, nally helping to lead the withdrawal of troops across the Rhine by any means possibleBy chance he was wearing an inatable rubber ring, taken in case of ditching over water which helped him to come to the aid of a small boatload of soldiers that had been hit by a mortar re. Major Toler escaped across the river by hanging on to the side of another boat but in doing so, lost his boots from around his neck. He then had to march miles to a medical post before being taken to hospital suering exhaustion and nothing more than a splintered nger.A fascinating story of wartime heroism by a Goostrey ocer, Major Ian Toler, came to light during months of research by Goostrey Parish Archive, led by archivist Stewart Smallwood, for its display to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day in May.The display in the Scout Hut attracted more visitors than previous events held by the archive, with a continuous ow of people, mostly far too young to remember the day eight decades ago, and eager to discover a period from Goostrey and Twemlow’s past..It held the interest of all ages, from children to young adults, and a popular feature was replica copies of local newspaper pages from the time, which visitors were able to take away as souvenirs. They included the constituency MP for Congleton, Sarah Russell, who was impressed with the display and detailed research into the lives of those who served in the forces and supported the war eort on the home front, leading to VE Day.Another visitor was Anne Bloor, formerly Norbury, who was born at Brick Bank Farm, but left Goostrey fty-ve years ago when she married her husband, Jim, to live on their farm at Endon. She was accompanied by her sister, Jean, who lives in Byley. It appears that the day itself on May 8, 1945, went with hardly any celebration as so many were still serving overseas. It wasn’t until December 1946, nineteen months after VE Day, that a party was held in the old village hall for the 93 men and women of the village and surrounding area who had returned to their families.Goostrey Parish Archiveby Goostrey Parish Archivewww.goostreyparisharchive.co.ukHe was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for his actions and bravery during the operation, which saw more than 15,000 allied losses and 6,500 taken prisoner by the Germans.Operation Market Garden became the subject of a book and lm, “A Bridge Too Far” by Cornelius Ryan. After Arnhem Ian narrowly escaped being sent to India . If he had this would not have been written as he would have been in the ill - fated aircraft in place of Major Bob Crout which crashed in the Pyrenees killing all occupants , including several others of the squadron .The next Station was Earls Colne to train the RAF Glider Pilots for the Rhine Crossing in March 1945 . Returning from Varsity with Rex Norton killed it was rather an anti - climax waiting for the end of the War . Then came an hilarious training camp near Ilfracombe - VE Day - VJ Day - and in December 1945 Ian was demobbed .After his demob ‘ Ian still carried on in the TA in a Signal Unit in Runcorn and when this was disbanded in 1955 what now seems to have been forgotten was that a new ‘ Home Guard was formed , complete with weapons and uniform and Ian commanded the 10th Cheshire HG Battalion as a Lieut Col until that also was disbanded .In civilian life after three years in the Steel Works at Barrow , Ian had gone back to Cheshire to work for ICI as an engineer . After the War he went back to them and during this time had an interesting job in the fties ‘ being in charge of a Ministry of Supply factory at Runcorn which had been constructed for the manufacture of Mustard Gas during the War . His job now was to empty the 1,000 lb bombs which had been lled , and to destroy all the stocks of mustard gas by controlled burning in a plant which he designed . In all , 6,000 tons were destroyed safely which , as far as is known , was the entire stock .In 1960 he left ICI and went to a small private chemical company Ward Blenkinsop , as General Manager and later Director , from which he retired in 1978. In his retirement he made printed circuit boards and other electronic gadgetry in which he had always been interested .Major Toler died in 2001 and his funeral was at St John’s Church in Manley.

58Hello again. I hope you have had a good month. Summer is just around the corner, hopefully! There’s a spring in everyone’s step with lighter nights so there’s no better time to be o exploring.I visited Arley Hall & Gardens in May. Just a short drive from Northwich, this historic estate oers lovely gardens and paths to explore. It’s not huge but if you’re leisurely about it, it’s the perfect day out.Spanning over 15 acres, Arley’s gardens are a testament to 270 years of horticultural passion. Begin wherever takes your fancy at Arley once you leave the gift shop where you pay. Take the map with you as that’s handy so you don’t miss anything. The lime avenue makes a grand entrance planted in the mid-1800s, this leads you towards the gardens and main areas. The big herbaceous borders, believed to be the rst of its kind in England, will be bursting into colour by the time you read this hopefully. Find the greenhouse which is well worth having a look inside. Keep exploring further aeld and you’ll nd the “little house” and ponds and Summer at Arley Hall & GardensBy Hilary Mines, Founder of trundl, The Walking for Charity App paths that run at the bottom of the gardens. It’s like a little mini adventure the rst time you explore Arley’s gardens, seeing where the paths lead and it is lovely for children to explore. There’s a woodland walk too. Go back towards the house and the 7-acre woodland garden has shaded paths and amazing tree and plant specimens. When I went the Rhododendrons were out in force and beautiful next to the bluebells and wild garlic but there is always something dierent at Arley to look at no matter what the time of year. Nearby is the PlayZone, equipped with a zip wire, sandpit, and swings. I nearly had ago but decided not to make a fool of myself falling o the zip wire into the sandpit.Finish o and treat yourself in the café. Don’t forget to visit the gift shop too. Actually you can’t leave unless you go out through the gift shop so you won’t miss it. Clever at Arley! They always have really nice things for gifts and treats though so worth a mooch.Arley Hall & Gardens is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. Admission is £12 for adults, £6 for children aged 4-16, and £33 for families (2 adults and up to 3 children). Please check these details rst before you go.So all that remains to be said is: Enjoy the next few weeks before we meet again and I hope you get outside for some lovely trundls around Cheshire and beyond and this has given you some inspiration to try somewhere you might not have been before.

The Photographic Society in Holmes Chapel took a range of photographs to commemorate the millennium, many of which are in the archive. All the shops in the photograph have changed hands over the last 25 years. These cottages were along Maccleseld Road about where access to Sandiford Road is now. They were part of a group of ten terraced houses. In a survey in 1910 they were described as ‘old brick-built cottages with 2 living rooms, 2 bedrooms and a detached wash house and privy’

64Strictly speaking, a potter is someone who throws pots on a potter’s wheel. They generally make lots of the same item – and then they are known as production potters. Those of us who make sculptural, handbuilt pieces are not, strictly speaking, potters. We are ceramicists, When is a potter not a potter?By Cheshire Clay Studiosor sculptors. However, it’s all ceramics and the labels only really mean anything to those wanting to make a career in the ceramics industry. Most of us have a preference. At Cheshire Clay Studios about 33% of our members never leave the wheel, another 33% only ever handbuild, and the remaining third do some of both, but still with a preference for one or the other. The two owners of the studio, Lisa and Liz are perfect examples of this variety. Liz is a fantastic potter – she is an excellent thrower, and her passion is glazing – we make many of our own glazes at the studio. Lisa, on the other hand never touches the wheel, she makes sculptural pieces and her interest is with alternative ring techniques or hand painting, between us we make one good all round potter and ceramicist! For those of you who watch the Great Pottery Throwdown on the TV, the contestants are a really talented bunch as there are not that many pottery enthusiasts who can both handbuild and throw as well as they do, and as some of them haven’t been lifelong potters, their achievements are even more impressive.Historically, ceramics has been a bit of a Cinderella in the arts world – its functionality seems to set it apart from something that has no functional value but is ‘true art’, and yet, anyone who falls in love with clay will know that crafting something both beautiful and useful is one of life’s most satisfying experiences! There isn’t anything more rewarding than having a cup of tea out of a mug that you have made with your own hands – or eating soup out of your very own bowl. Best of all, even though the mug and bowl might be a bit wonky (artisanal – you know) it will still hold your drink or your soup and unless you break them, those items will last for actual centuries – long, long after the hands that crafted them have gone. Every potter is making something that is their legacy, and how wonderful is that?

70Tucked away in the Cheshire countryside, The Three Greyhounds Inn is a beautifully restored 300-year-old coaching inn that oozes character. Inside, you’ll nd ancient wooden beams, roaring res, and ickering candles — the perfect setting for a relaxed meal or cosy drink. But when the sun shines, the magic moves outside. Their fully enclosed beer garden, complete with countryside views, plenty of seating, and even a vintage tractor for the kids to clamber on, is an absolute gem.The food is top-notch, with proper homemade British classics done really well. Their chicken, ham, leek & tarragon pie is a personal favourite — hearty, rich, and generously lled. On our latest visit, I swapped the usual school-mum gang for a family lunch after a whirlwind morning of kids’ clubs. The welcome was just as warm, and the food, as ever, spot on.Here’s what we ordered:• Smoked Haddock, Salmon & Prawn Chowder – Creamy, rich, and packed with avour, served with crusty bloomer and chunky chips.• Crispy Cauliower & Vegetable Curry – Bright and vibrant, with crisp battered cauliower sitting on a bed of spicy veg curry.• Children’s Sausage, Chips & Peas – A simple hit for my eldest.• Chicken Wings from the Nibbles Menu and Chips – My youngest created her own meal, and it worked a treat with ve tasty wings. The children’s options aren’t on a separate menu, but smaller portions from the main dishes work really well. The portions are spot on, and the quality is just as good.I can’t not mention the pies. Even though Days Out & Meals Out reviewsJenny,Days Out and Meals Out ReviewsI didn’t order one this time, they’re honestly some of the best I’ve had. Proper pastry, packed with meat and gravy — comfort food at its nest. Just be warned: you’ll probably be too full for pudding (but it’s worth it).If you do make it to dessert, you’re in for a treat. The Bramley Apple & Spiced Rum Crumble is a standout, though I always wish for more custard! Other temptations include sticky toee pudding, rich cheesecakes, banoee mess, and Cheshire Farm Ice Cream. The drinks list is equally impressive — local ales, a great wine selection, and their quirky Brandy Bible for something a little dierent.Dog lovers rejoice — The Three Greyhounds is super dog-friendly. Pups are welcome in the bar, snug, and garden. You’ll nd water bowls, free biscuits, and even a dog menu featuring treats like Craft Dog Beer and freshly cooked sausages. Plus, it’s perfectly placed for a walk around Shakerley Mere.Looking to celebrate something special? Their rustic outdoor barn is available for weddings and events, and the decked terrace with covered tables is perfect for lazy Sundays or a drink as the sun sets.Love live music? Their resident band brings the vibes once a month — with upcoming gigs on 23rd May, 20th June, and 18th July, all starting at 7:30pm. 76Before M6 Beds became known for mattresses and sleep expertise, it had humbler—but no less impactful—beginnings. In the late 1990s, founder Je opened The Exchange, a small second-hand electronics shop tucked away in Holmes Chapel. Having previously worked as an area manager for American electronics giant Tandy, covering the Manchester–Liverpool corridor, Je brought industry know-how and a passion for customer service to his new venture. The Exchange quickly became more than just a shop—it was a staple of village life. Locals fondly remember browsing shelves stacked with televisions, game consoles, and cables, or trading in well-worn VHS players and PlayStation games. It was a familiar and welcoming place, with a reputation built on honesty, helpfulness, and trust. While the tech trade eventually tightened and the market shifted, the values established during those early years laid the foundation for something new—something that would soon grow into one of Cheshire’s most respected family-run businesses. What began as a sideline—purchasing and reselling returned mattresses—soon took over. Je started delivering mattresses from the back of his car, and demand quickly grew. The tiny Holmes Chapel shop couldn’t keep up, so the family relocated the business to a larger unit in Alsager, marking the start of what would become a steady transformation into a dedicated bed retailer.Over the years, that one small unit expanded to a showroom now over 8,000 sq ft. In 2023, the business opened its second location in Northwich, aiming Katy meets... M6 Beds, from Electronics to Excellent SleepByKaty O’Reganto reach more communities across Cheshire.Despite growth, the family ethos has remained strong. “My dad’s always been about people rst,” says Louis, one of Je’s sons now involved in running the company. “That’s shaped the way we work—supportive, not pushy.”After back surgery in 2021, comfort became a priority for me. We visited M6 Beds, and the team took the time to understand exactly what I needed. They helped me test dierent mattresses without pressure, guiding me gently to the right choice. Their patience and insight made the experience surprisingly reassuring. The team at M6 Beds pride themselves on small details that make a dierence—whether that’s ensuring deliveries are respectful of customers’ homes, or oering to remove and recycle old beds at no extra charge. Sta work across multiple roles: from showroom advice to deliveries, repairs, or even staircase inspections. The atmosphere is deliberately relaxed, with no hard sales tactics. There’s a conscious eort to reduce waste. Used mattresses are taken back to a local distribution centre and collected for recycling, and M6 Beds works with manufacturers aiming to reduce glue use—making recycling easier and cleaner. With a loyal customer base and a growing footprint, the business continues to adapt—balancing tradition with the needs of a modern market. But at its heart, M6 Beds remains what it always was: a local, family-run business that prioritises thoughtful service and community trust.
