Out of alignment W hat is the Bowen Technique and how can it help you Are you fed up with having to live with pain or discomfort taking painkillers restricting your activities and believing that nothing will help Well actually there is something you can try and most people have very positive results even if you ve suffered for years even if you ve tried lots of other things Pain is not always what it seems For example a lot of the time your body is just out of alignment and a bit of straightening you out will make the world of difference Imagine if the suspension in your car was out of alignment The wheels would not be balanced maybe wearing one tyre more it could have an effect on the brakes and steering One problem leads to another Now a think about the human body eg if the pelvis is slightly twisted or rotated it can cause muscle spasms pain and or the appearance of having one leg shorter than the other It is often caused by pelvic misalignment This may cause more pressure on a particular area ie the hip knee ankle spine and everything has 12 a knock on effect Having assessed where the source of problem is some gentle adjustments of the muscles and soft tissue can correct the imbalance and often completely eradicate the pain This is just one of the ways that Bowen can work Some conditions that respond well to Bowen include back pain sciatica migraines asthma Sports injuries RSI shoulder neck problems knee hip pain arthritis and fibromyalgia to name but a few However Bowen treats the whole person not conditions which means getting to the source of what s causing the problem In my 20 years experience as a therapist and Trainer there is not much I haven t seen Most people respond very well I will leave you with a comment from one of my clients who left a review Discovering Bowen has completely changed my life I d been managing pain for more than 20 years Jan is highly experienced with a vast knowledge of Bowen I can t recommend her highly enough Jan Williamson Back to Health

Village Volunteers S ince about the year 2000 a small group of residents have contributed to keeping Holmes Chapel looking attractive by maintaining the flower beds in the village centre and litter picking around the village This was an initiative by the Parish Council which has continued to provide financial support and publicity over the years The group has been directed by Dave Monks and John Clowes who have sourced plants and advised on maintenance Over the years new beds have been added and there is now a wide range of interesting plants around the village On the wall near the carpet shop is the Moroccan Broom which smells of pineapples In the bed near Barclays Bank is a fine group of hydrangea called Annabelle which put on a brillant show of white flowers each summer And in the recently planted Sensory Garden near the Fire Station is a plant called mellianthus major which has large frilly green leaves another shrub called the sweet pepper bush and a tree called the paper bark maple Largely the plants look after themselves but need weeding and occasional pruning and these as well as litter picking are the main activities when the Village Volunteers meet each month They meet on a Sunday morning 10 to 12 once each month usually the second 20 Sunday in the month Also in the summer on the fourth Monday of the month in the evening from 6 to 7 pm The full programme is available on the Parish Council web site The group are always looking for new helpers both to garden and to litter pick No particular skill is required but if you can spare just an occasional hour it will help keep the village looking special Just contact the Parish Council office 01477 533934 or clerk holmeschapelparishcouncil gov uk for more information This year Dave Monks and John Clowes plan to retire from their organising roles which they have been doing for 20 years so they are keen to find someone to take over They will hopefully be around for some time to give help and advice but they feel now is the time to pass over to younger hands to continue keeping the village in top form Holmes Chapel has grown rapidly over the past few years so we now have a lot more residents in our community It would be great if a few of the new residents would like to get involved along with those who have been here for some time and hopefully ensure there will be a team who can continue the work into the future Holmes Chapel Village Volunteers

Health M igraine Many of my clients come to me specifically for reflexology to help with migraine and it has become an area I have a specialist interest in It is always so rewarding to see the clients symptoms improve As September sees migraine awareness week in the UK I thought this was a good time to raise some awareness of this condition What is a migraine Many people think a migraine is just a headache but it is much more than a headache Migraine is usually a moderate to severe headache but can affect the whole body with many people experiencing other symptoms such as nausea vomiting or increased sensitivity to light and noise leading to people often wanting to rest in a dark quiet room Other people can also suffer from sweating feeling hot or cold stomach ache and diarrhoea You can have a migraine with or without an aura An aura is warning symptoms which can last for 5 minutes to an hour before a migraine happens The aura can be difficulties with vision such as flashing lights or zig zag line having difficulty speaking or feeling dizzy or numbness or pins and needles The symptoms intensity frequency and duration of migraines can vary enormously between sufferers What causes migraine No one knows exactly what causes a migraine to happen 24 but it is thought to be abnormal brain activity resulting in temporary effects of nerves chemical and blood vessels in the brain Usually individuals will have trigger factors which result in a migraine There are many things which may be a trigger factor for example certain foods caffeine alcohol hormonal factors stress anxiety poor sleep bright lights strong smell or some medication If you suffer from migraines keep a diary of what you have eaten how your feeling how much sleep you have had etc and see I you can find a possible trigger to help you try to avoid this in the future Also recording the date time and length of a migraine can help you to see how often they are happening and if there is any pattern as to when they occur Treatment If you get a migraine simple painkillers such as paracetamol and rest can often help However if you have frequent or severe migraines you should see your GP to discuss this further As well as medicines many people do find complementary therapies such as reflexology can be helpful Reflexology is a gentle non invasive therapy which reduces stress and helps improve sleep both of which can lead to migraine and many of my clients have noticed an improvement in their migraines with regular treatment Karen Cheshire Clinical Reflexology

Lockdown stories G rowing up in East Anglia I developed a passion for art sketching animals mostly horses in my school books and copying pictures that I found in magazines After completing A levels I went to Norwich School of Art to do an Art Foundation course and then a BA Hons Degree in Fashion and Textiles at Manchester A career in Sports Fashion ensued with roles in design management for Majestic New York Yankees and Reebok who taught me best practice This work ethic still runs through everything I do today and also enabled me to travel the world and experience other cultures which still feeds into my creative work I still design on a freelance basis and enjoy working with colour graphics and pattern design It is with that passion for colour and nature in all its guises that I began painting professionally I take my inspiration from my surroundings and paint local landscapes horses dogs and birds and also take commissions for pet portraits 2020 has been a strange year for everyone but looking on the positive side it has given me time to reflect and do the things that I may have been putting off due to other commitments As Covid 19 restrictions caused all planned exhibitions workshops and events to be cancelled I used the time to work on the behind the scenes aspect of my business the boring stuff and challenged myself to producing a small painting every day To keep a supply of subject matter to paint I put a call out on social media for people to send photos of things that made them smile Every day a photo was selected from the submissions to paint Each painting was filmed using time lapse and uploaded to Youtube The painting was then sent to the owner with the link to 32

Cider I f you have been following along with these last couple of articles you will have hopefully seen your juice go through the fermentation process and given the warmish weather we ve had over the last couple of months chances are it ll have finished fermenting the bubbles have slowed up If they have stopped now is the time to rack it off bottle it using some sterile tubing bottles with either crown caps screw tops or swing top corks If it s not stopped bubbling that s cool it will come to a stop at some point Likewise if you want to leave it a bit longer for all the lees cloudy bits to settle out that s cool too You can do this several times the longer you leave it to settle out the clearer the cider If you want a nice still cider then bottle away If you like a tingle on your tongue then slip a teaspoon of sugar in each bottle before adding the cider If you want it to last a bit longer then a little sodium metabisulphate is your friend please research your own amounts based on the volumes you ve got Let the bottles sit in a nice cool dark place for a couple of months the longer the better before enjoying the fruits of your labour with any luck it s going to be ready for Christmas Day If you re not too focused on having your 36 own cider with the turkey this year and you can get yourself an oak barrel why not try and age some of it You can get small 10l oak barrels quite readily using a variety of oak sources Depending on the type of barrel used you ll find the cider takes on the vanilla earthy woody notes from the charred wood If you are lucky enough to get hold a barrel that has previously been used then you ll get different You can also add other fruits or juices like blueberries cranberries cherries or raspberries to your cider after fermentation or maybe even spices such as ginger or cinnamon Have a play with them try out different combinations and amounts to see what works for your taste buds We ll leave it there for now but before I sign off this issue did you know that back in the 14th century it is said that children were baptised in cider It was supposedly cleaner than the water now we use the phrase wetting the babies head as an excuse for having a boozy drink or 2 funny how things go full circle Until next time stay safe stay heathy be kind Rich The Beer Emporium

Fitness Business I n business if you re not growing you re dying Like for most small businesses this year has been rocky It s presented challenges and it s offered opportunities Back in March we received the news that we were being temporarily closed down and at that point it would be anybody s guess as to how long we would remain closed We may not at the time have wanted to consider the possibility but deep down we questioned whether we could possibly come back from this So why am I writing this today I guess my hope is that somebody reading this somebody who may still be facing similar challenges will be able to pull something from our experiences and see the hidden opportunities like we did JWC Health Fitness is our family business Its success directly impacts our family but the wider impact of the business is far greater We have a team of young coaches who have put their trust in us and a community of members who rely on our services So no pressure In March we had two choices we could tighten the belt and focus on survival or we could look further into the future and focus on growth Driven by the fact that our children our staff and the wider community were watching us we felt the need to instil confidence in them I ve always been driven by the saying If you re not growing you re dying and so with that saying firmly in mind we looked at what we could do to make sure that our staff 44 and members would return to a bigger better business We committed to increasing our social media presence and ensuring that everything that was visible to the public was pumped full of our principles and values Support Fun and Exceptional Service We created a schedule of online workouts so that we could keep our members moving wrote blogs and regularly emailed our members We painted the building created a new clothing line collaborated with a health supplement company created a smoothie bar and invested in a state of the art body composition machine amongst other things And we were sure to shout about this on social media In fact in April we reached more than 50 000 people on Facebook approximately three times that of an average month More people than ever were seeing us watching us and engaging with us and guess what The day we announced that we were reopening we were inundated with enquiries We had used this time to build a trusting relationship with people who were previously strangers This work had meant that we had an incredibly successful reopening and were able to jump straight back to where we left off but with the foundations now in place for continued growth So here s our big announcement Sadly other businesses in our sector have not been so

Our local heritage W hat Lloyd George wanted to know about your house If your house was built before about 1910 you can get an interesting snapshot of what the house was like at that time This is thanks to a Budget presented by Lloyd George in 1909 which proposed taxing land which could have value beyond that of agricultural land In order to identify this a survey was carried out to value land all round the country It produced detailed maps including one of Holmes Chapel on which the owner of every piece of land was identified It also described any property on that land and who was living there at the time So for example we know that the occupier of the Police Station on Middlewich Road was Sgt Samson Bowyer The house was in good condition and had an office a large living room 2 cells each fitted with wooden beds and WC and a yard for exercising Outside was a coalhouse a WC and a kennel The records tell us whether the house had a water supply or used a well what condition the house was in and how the waste water was disposed of Very few houses had a water supply directly into the house and most drainage was into the nearest stream Hot running water was very new and only the local plumber seemed to have this luxury Electricity for most people was a dream and only two houses in the village Sandiford and The Hollies had their own generator and batteries The farms and small holdings were described in detail even saying how many cows they could accommodate and what was grown in the fields For example there was tying for two cows at Saddlers Close the home of Dr Picton All this information can be 48 linked to the census which took place in 1911 so that for every house it is possible with a little detective work to not only have a description of the property but find out who was living there and how they earned their living For any local historian or owner of an old house this is a treasure trove of information For those who want to find out more about an old property in Holmes Chapel much of this information has been coordinated into a booklet called Holmes Chapel around 1910 which can be purchased from the Print Room in Church Walk Here is an example of what can be learnt In 1910 this cottage on Macclesfield Road was already old There was a small garden area and paved yard with a pumped water supply Accommodation comprised a living room back kitchen and small wash scullery and 2 bedrooms There was a coal shed and earth closet outside The rent was 8pa Over the door was a date of 1746 and the letters TBH indicating the house had been built or renovated by Thomas Bayley Hall who lived at the Hermitage and owned many properties in the area Thomas Venables 66 lived here with his wife Sarah aged 62 He worked as a farm labourer Holmes Chapel U3A Local History Group
