8The future of Goostrey Rose Day looks rosy after it attracted bumper crowds and a new generation of volunteers to the annual event which took place on Saturday (29 June).The Rose Festival saw hundreds of villagers line the route of the procession before they descended on the school eld to watch 12-year-old Harriette Noonan crowned Rose Queen.The spectacular, which is the largest village event of its kind in the area, is dependent on scores of volunteers and the organisers are delighted that a whole load of new people have stepped forward to help maintain the tradition.The procession, which was made up of a series of oats, walking groups and queens from other local villages, led by a steam traction engine driven by Terry and Des Bostock. In all almost 250 children took part. The best visiting Queen’s car was won by Astbury and the Year 3 oat Space took the Jon Lee Cup for the best children’s oat. The best banner was David Attenborough and endangered animals. Budgie’s surprise won the best adult oat and Cynthia Bridgewood won the Mrs Kettle Trophy for the best adult fancy dress.Goostrey Rose Day future looks rosy.ByGoostrey Rose DayHarriette was crowned during the traditional ceremony by her brother Rupert Noonan who was the crown bearer. Her attendants were: Isobel Comb; Tilda Few; Brianna Hamilton; Sophie Henry; Isla Machin; Kate Pearson; Rose Saunders and Chloe Walker.Romilly Wakeeld was the Rosebud Queen and her lady in waiting was Thea Langley. The attendants were: Bethany Anderson; Bryony Brown; Chloe Dakin; Anvitha Mothe; Beth Solan and Amber Willmott. This year’s Rose Festival President was Sue Mottershead and the Gold Queen was Janet Smith (nee Blackhurst) who was crowned in 1974 and the Silver Queen was Sarah Le-Grys (nee Gilsenan) who was Rose Queen in 1999. They were accompanied by the Crown Bearer from 1974 Stephen Walton and Adam Brown who performed the role 25 years ago.On the eld there were numerous stalls including the hoopla game, recently restored by the village Archive Group with the help of Goostrey Men in Sheds, which attracted a big audience throughout the afternoon. The larger than normal crowd was also treated to Maypole Dancing from Year 3 at Goostrey school, the Audley Brass Band and ve community teams competing in a tug-of-war competition. The day was rounded o by a Ceilidh which was attended by almost 100 revellers.On Sunday, a special service was held at St Luke’s Church where children attended in their Rose Day costumes.Christina Burgess, chair of the organising committee said: “Everyone seems to agree that this year’s Rose Day was a great success but it would not have been possible without all the hard work put in by the committee and countless other volunteers The support we received from the community was exceptional and I would like to thank every single person who helped in any way. 12Looking back to when I was growing up here in the 80’s and 90’s, Holmes Chapel was a very dierent place to what it is now. Smaller, and certainly a more intimate place to live, it was dicult sometimes to get away with anything without it coming back to your parents via the village telephone network! Back then, we were a tiny bit of a small country in a global society that was undergoing massive social change and boy, has the world we know now changed signicantly. I don’t know if you can remember the aids scares, the deaths of several beloved high-prole gay actors and musicians - confession, Freddie Mercury’s hit me the most as I had just gotten into Queen’s music thanks to a very extensive record collection of the family who I used to babysit for. As a child, I was unaware of Section 28 of the Local Government Act which made it illegal to teach or promote homosexuality in a positive way to school children, we just knew it was an insult if someone called you gay... To say it must have been a dicult time to be homosexual, with many people scared to be themselves, is a massive understatement. It took courage, and guts, and no insignicant amount of nerves to be openly gay back then. It was headline news if a celebrity was to ‘come out of the closet’, so just imagine how it must have been for a teenager or young adult to not know how to tell long standing friends that they were attracted to someone of the same gender, let alone someone who had been supressed from their true feelings for all their life.I remember one of my best mates agonising about coming out to our friendship group at the time. For me, it Holmes Chapel Pride 2024ByRich Jepsonmade not a jot of dierence to how I saw them, a big hug, a laugh about what took them so long, and we got on with the summer holidays. Looking back, it was extremely glib of me to not appreciate what it took for them to tell a 16/17 year old me. I’ve never told them this, but they will never stop being one of the bravest people I know.Back in June this year, we were asked the question of why Holmes Chapel didn’t have any annual Pride events. Could we hold an event to raise awareness of the issues and diculties aecting the lives of LGBTQ+ people in Holmes Chapel and our surrounding rural areas? Something to openly celebrate the diversity, identity, and strength of the LGBTQ+ community, creating a welcoming, inclusive environment where every participant can feel safe, respected, and celebrated... erm, no I didn’t know why we didn’t have one, and yes... I guess we could.The past few weeks have seen us research what goes into putting on a village event, talking with councils, volunteers, (lling in no-end of forms!) and local businesses about making this happen. Hoping that this event would stand as a beacon of acceptance, understanding, and pride for all of us, irrespective of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, disability, age, or religion. I’ve spent hours imagining how we could create an event that would be proactively promoting local support groups for LGBTQ+ people, providing a visible sign of hope that this is a diverse community in which to live, work and visit - particularly pertinent given how our village is now very much on the global stage thanks to The Village Partnership and their Harry Styles tours!I cannot profess to knowing just what the greater challenges for LGBTQ+ people living in rural communities like Holmes Chapel are, but hopefully through raising awareness we can help to improve these and create increased acceptance and understanding. Pride should be a celebration of the diversity within the LGBTQ+ community, but also something that goes to show how far LGBTQ+ rights have come, and how in some places there is still work to be done. Pride is about acceptance, equality, celebrating the work of LGBTQ+ people, education in LGBTQ+ history and raising awareness of issues aecting the LGBTQ+ community. Holmes Chapel Pride will be a free event, only made possible with your support. Support that will come from not just your time, but from your actions. We have started the fundraising process, and are hugely grateful for the support of local businesses so far, so let’s make September 28th a memorable day and show everyone that Holmes Chapel is welcoming to everyone.

16Summer Celebration – what a weekend!Holmes Chapel certainly knows how to party and celebrate this fantastic community! What an incredible Summer Celebration weekend we’ve just had. There were so many amazing events and what made it so special is there was something for everyone!Firstly, Holmes Chapel Parish Council wants to say a huge thank you to all those who organised events: Everybody Health & Leisure, Holmes Chapel Chorus, the Village Fair organisers and all those who supported us for the Friday night Street Party! So much time, hard work, thought and energy went into these events - thank you!Friday Night Street Party!The rain held o and hundreds of our residents descended into the village centre at 6pm for a fantastic night of food, refreshment, music, dance and magic. It was great to close London Road and allow attendees the freedom to safely enjoy a fantastic night out. Holmes Chapel Parish Council newsThe delicious aromas from our various local businesses made it dicult to choose where to go and eat - it all looked and smelt amazing! The music from Dane Sound Radio and the jazz band left us partying into the evening! Cllr Diane Tams, says, “It was wonderful to see so many of our residents spending time with one another in our amazing village centre. The Summer Celebration is about community and coming together to celebrate what a fantastic place Holmes Chapel is to live. To see the joy and happiness on the faces of our residents and to see our local businesses thriving was a real privilege. A huge thank you to all those who made this event happen; from those who gave up their time to volunteer as stewards to our musicians and local business - we couldn’t do it without you!”SaturdaySaturday saw two fantastic events take place which centred around music and fun!Everybody Health & Leisure Family Fun DayHolmes Chapel Community Centre was buzzing with fun and the sun shone (eventually)! The Everybody sta had worked so hard to put on a fantastic afternoon/evening of music and family activities and all for free!There was dancing, face painting, sports and games, bouncy castle, balloons, magic, Meatloaf tribute act and other musical acts, great food and England even won the football (which was shown during the event)!Jade Stone, manager of the Community Centre says: ‘Holmes Chapel Community Centre was so excited to host a Summer Celebration, drawing an unprecedented crowd of over 600 people. I was overwhelmed by the turnout and extended a warm thank you to all who participated and supported the event.Featuring lively performances and a variety of children’s activities, the celebration was a hit with the community. We couldn’t have put on such an amazing event without the local support, highlighting the crucial role the community played in the event’s success.The team are grateful to everyone who joined the festivities, helping to make this Summer Celebration a tremendous success!”Holmes Chapel Chorus ConcertSaturday evening, Holmes Chapel Leisure Centre hosted a spectacular concert by the Holmes Chapel Chorus. A concert with a dierence, attendees were encouraged to bring a picnic to have at the interval. The theme of the concert was ‘For the Love of Music’ and it was truly a special night. A rae for St Luke’s Hospice raised £450 which was fantastic. A huge thanks to the Chorus for putting on such a great night of music.Sunday - Village FairThe annual Village Fair held at the Victoria Club has always been a great event for Holmes Chapel, bringing people together. The rain did not stop play! There were lots of stalls, activities, classic cars, a dog show, circus skills and music. So many people came down to look around and a fantastic time was had by all.The Parish Council always enjoys meeting our residents face to face and nding out what matters most to you. Our stall highlighted some of our recent work, including SID data and gathering views regarding EV charging for our Village. The Youth Council again organised a spectacular art exhibition using art work from local schools - Byley Primary, Goostrey Primary, Holmes Chapel Primary, the Hermitage and Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School. It was fantastic to see the artistic talent of our local children and young people.A huge thanks to the organisers of the Village Fair for rounding of Summer Celebration 2024 with a fantastic fair!Good Luck to our Olympians!Siblings Emily and Tom Ford are from our village and will be representing the UK at the upcoming Olympics. There was a high wind and in a few hours 15 out of the 19 houses in the town were reduced to ashes”. The buildings which escaped the re were the church, the Red Lion and the cottages behind the church with low roofs. The re came very close to the Church. Lime trees which circled it, planted in 1743, were scorched but From the archives, our local history...Article by Holmes Chapelu3a Local History Groupsurvived. They were removed in 1960 because they had become decrepit and dangerous.At the time of the re most of the inhabitants were at a monthly meeting in Northwich. As a result there appears to have been no loss of life.A consequence of the re is that the oldest buildings in the village, except those mentioned, are late 18th/19th century. There is no known record of how the re was put out or what equipment was available at the time in Holmes Chapel. However re engines were in existence in the country at the time.The earliest references to an “engine” in Holmes Chapel is found 1866. However in 1892 some willows thought to have been behind the present Sainsbury’s and Costa caught re “and in a few minutes about 50 dozen hampers and 50 tons of dry willows, together with the shed that contained them, were in one monstrous blaze”. It is stated that water was brought from pumps in buckets to bring the re under control as it was no use getting the re engine out because there was insucient water to feed it.Cottages behind the Church which escaped the re of 1753

The Accurx online triage system here at the Health Centre continues to ourish, enabling your GPs to best meet the healthcare demands of you, their patients. As previously highlighted, all triage forms are reviewed Patient Participation Group Rich JepsonHolmes Chapel Health Centre PPGand responded to by a duty GP on the day, which ensures that all patients are being seen as quickly as possible and according to need. During this time of unprecedented demand, The team at the Health Centre thanks you for your continued support.To assist with demand, they are urging patients to use the Pharmacy First initiative. This enables them to deal with demand by redirecting the following health concerns to the pharmacy: Sinusitis, Sore throat, Earache, Infected insect bite, Impetigo (a bacterial skin infection), Shingles and Uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women.Local pharmacists are now able to oer medical advice including prescribing where appropriate for these conditions. This service is available for a walk-in service at the pharmacy. If you come through the triage system you may well be triaged to a local pharmacist for these conditions. We would encourage all patients to take advantage of this new service - if we all do, t is predicted that using the pharmacy rst initiative it could free up 30 million GP appointments annually across England. A further update with the onset of summertime, is regarding travel vaccinations. The surgery oers 4 free NHS travel vaccines these are: Polio, Typhoid, Hepatitis A and Cholera. For these vaccines the Practise requires 6-8 weeks’ notice. Please book as soon as possible via the triage system as an admin request. We unfortunately do not oer any other private travel vaccines, but if you require any alternative travel vaccinations, these are available at Holmes Chapel Pharmacy on the precinct (not the practice dispensary) or other local pharmacies. Prices for these are available from the individual pharmacy.There has been a request for help from the pharmacy team at the Health Centre. There is an urgent need for help in delivering medication to patients in Holmes Chapel and the surrounding villages who are unable to get into the pharmacy to collect their prescriptions. Help is needed for morning and afternoon shifts, and mileage will be paid to drivers. If you can spare a couple of hours, please get in touch with Hannah Kelly at the surgery.Finally, an update on the parking issues. The surgery is actively nding a solution to the ongoing parking situation. Problems are still being faced, with patients parking in sta spaces, & members of sta are continually needing to ask patients to move from doctors/ sta spaces. To answer the demand of a growing Holmes Chapel population the surgery has increased their workforce, creating demand for a large number of sta spaces. If the parking rules continue to not be adhered to, the surgery may have to close the car park to patients. Please do help us with this. If you are struggling to nd a space on the surgery car park, there is parking available next to the library and at the precinct, although this is expected to become chargeable soon.

These professionals visit households across the area, providing vital assistance that enables residents to live independently. One organisation making a notable impact is Daski Ltd, a recent addition to our community that has rapidly expanded its team.I recently had the opportunity to chat with Sijabuliso, the entrepreneurial owner of Daski, who embarked on a journey from Zimbabwe to the UK as a young adult to train as a nurse. Leaving his family at the tender age of 17 was tough, but he found solace in the similarities between the educational systems and his prior connections with British culture through a pen pal. An election has come and gone with a new government in place. With it, comes the age-old question – What can it do for me?The truth is, right now, not a whole lot. Change takes time and those particularly high interest rates are likely to stay for just a little while longer. However, that isn’t to say that relief for small businesses isn’t going to happen. After all, new governments are quite keen on putting its stamp on things.Its  rst move which has slipped under the radar, has been to introduce the Growth Guarantee Scheme which will see lenders support access to  nance for small businesses over the next two years. In fact, a third of small businesses would like better access to  nance according to a new study and just under half of those asked in the study would like to see a drastic reduction in red tape.There is absolutely no denying that red tape is a huge burden on small businesses. I often think I’m avoiding it, by opting for simplicity (I know I’m not the only one) before realising that I’m being dragged down and held in place by bundles and bundles of red tape.It’s also hard to understand. As small business owners or freelancers, we do not have time to really digest what it means, nor the money to pay somebody to  nd out. And in truth, its because much of the red tape that binds us to rules, lack simple common sense.But it a ects how we operate for sure. Fire safety, discrimination, health and safety, risk aversion and monetary handling are common areas where red tape a ects us, and we should all have a decent grasp of what is needed to comply in those areas. The truth is though, many don’t.Trade Associations are a good start to understand which side of the law you stand. Many are a key source of support for small  rms, and help assist with limitations that companies face, especially with small businesses. And whilst they are not necessarily legal experts, they do prove invaluable at helping with rules and regulations.Sometimes it is a mindset. Patience with rules and regulations can help somebody understand them quicker or in a simpler context if they give themselves just a moment to think about it. Treating the rules as unwelcome, unnecessary or even meddlesome can set somebody up to fail. In a broader sense, red tape is less an unnecessary evil and more a friendly reminder of the world we operate in. Treating it as such can certainly help and not hinder your business.

From nurses, doctors, and support sta to neighbours, friends, and family, there is often an army of people lifting you up through little acts of kindness.She also has awards for those who provide a listening ear, a reassuring hug or note, giggles and tears over a cup of tea, a meal for the family on treatment day, help with the school run when you have an appointment, a baked cake left on the doorstep for the disturbed nights ahead, a fundraiser in your name—the list is endless. The 2024 chosen charity is Prevent Breast Cancer, and they hope to beat the amount they raised last year, which was a huge £7,513.88. Sarah is a very busy lady. Not only does she have three children to look after, she also works most days at Celeste, a coee and cocktail bar in Holmes Chapel and she has recently set up her own breast cancer charity called ‘Beating Breast Cancer with Success’. 76Katrina Humphreys, a dedicated physiotherapist, has undergone a signicant transformation, shedding 2 stone and embarking on a new path to assist others in their weight loss journeys. After joining her local Slimming World group in Cranage - Holmes Chapel last year, Katrina dropped from 13 stone to 11 stone, despite facing challenges from Covid and Long Covid. Having lost one stone and recommitted to her weight loss journey, Katrina is now more determined than ever to help others.As a physiotherapist in the NHS and private practice, Katrina understands the impact of excess weight on health. She rmly believes that weight loss can improve both mental and physical well-being by reducing joint pain, easing heart strain, and enhancing overall life enjoyment.Katrina has recently trained as a Consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s largest Helping Others Achieve Their GoalsBy Katrina Humphreys, Slimming World Cranagegroup-based weight loss organization, at their national training academy in Derbyshire. She is set to take over the local group on July 26th, where members eagerly await her guidance.Katrina’s new role is underscored by concerning statistics: one in four adults in the UK are obese, a gure projected to rise to one in three by 2034. In Cheshire East, 64.8% of the population is overweight or obese, translating to approximately 8,424 individuals in the Holmes Chapel/Cranage/Goostrey area. Katrina’s mission to address this growing issue has never been more critical.Reecting on her journey, Katrina says, “Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK. When I rst joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight but now I just can’t wait to get started. After losing 2 stone and completing my training, it’s a privilege for me to be able to pass on the experience, insight, and understanding that helped me, so that I can give my members the support they need to get to their target.”Katrina stresses the importance of support in weight loss. She credits her success to the encouragement and understanding she received from her own Consultant and group. As someone who has faced the challenges of weight loss herself, she is dedicated to supporting her members all the way to their target weight. She highlights the signicance of setting targets, sharing recipes and ideas, and working together as a group to overcome challenges and celebrate success.Katrina found Slimming World to be dierent from other diets she had tried. The eating plan encourages the consumption of tasty, lling foods without hunger or deprivation. “I couldn’t believe I’d found a way to lose weight without starving myself,” she says. Moreover, Slimming World’s Body Magic programme promotes incorporating activity into daily routines, making it accessible for everyone.Slimming World Consultants, like Katrina, are former members who have successfully lost weight themselves. They run groups as micro-businesses in local communities, providing crucial support and guidance to members. Katrina is excited about the new challenges of running her own group, nding it a perfect t for her exible and rewarding career aspirations.Julie Bowden, who manages Katrina as a Team Developer, praises her positive outlook, experience as a physiotherapist, and supportive nature.
