8The future of Goostrey Rose Day looks rosy after it attracted bumper crowds and a new generation of volunteers to the annual event which took place on Saturday (29 June). The Rose Festival saw hundreds of villagers line the route of the procession before they descended on the school eld to watch 12-year-old Harriette Noonan crowned Rose Queen. The spectacular, which is the largest village event of its kind in the area, is dependent on scores of volunteers and the organisers are delighted that a whole load of new people have stepped forward to help maintain the tradition. The procession, which was made up of a series of oats, walking groups and queens from other local villages, led by a steam traction engine driven by Terry and Des Bostock. In all almost 250 children took part. The best visiting Queen’s car was won by Astbury and the Year 3 oat Space took the Jon Lee Cup for the best children’s oat. The best banner was David Attenborough and endangered animals. Budgie’s surprise won the best adult oat and Cynthia Bridgewood won the Mrs Kettle Trophy for the best adult fancy dress.Goostrey Rose Day future looks rosy.ByGoostrey Rose DayHarriette was crowned during the traditional ceremony by her brother Rupert Noonan who was the crown bearer. Her attendants were: Isobel Comb; Tilda Few; Brianna Hamilton; Sophie Henry; Isla Machin; Kate Pearson; Rose Saunders and Chloe Walker.Romilly Wakeeld was the Rosebud Queen and her lady in waiting was Thea Langley. The attendants were: Bethany Anderson; Bryony Brown; Chloe Dakin; Anvitha Mothe; Beth Solan and Amber Willmott. This year’s Rose Festival President was Sue Mottershead and the Gold Queen was Janet Smith (nee Blackhurst) who was crowned in 1974 and the Silver Queen was Sarah Le-Grys (nee Gilsenan) who was Rose Queen in 1999. They were accompanied by the Crown Bearer from 1974 Stephen Walton and Adam Brown who performed the role 25 years ago.On the eld there were numerous stalls including the hoopla game, recently restored by the village Archive Group with the help of Goostrey Men in Sheds, which attracted a big audience throughout the afternoon. The larger than normal crowd was also treated to Maypole Dancing from Year 3 at Goostrey school, the Audley Brass Band and ve community teams competing in a tug-of-war competition. The day was rounded o by a Ceilidh which was attended by almost 100 revellers. On Sunday, a special service was held at St Luke’s Church where children attended in their Rose Day costumes.Christina Burgess, chair of the organising committee said: “Everyone seems to agree that this year’s Rose Day was a great success but it would not have been possible without all the hard work put in by the committee and countless other volunteers The support we received from the community was exceptional and I would like to thank every single person who helped in any way. It is most heartening that so many new volunteers have stepped forward to help this year which is very reassuring for the future of the event which has been taking place in Goostrey for well over 100 years.” Photos: Fennella Thorpe, student at Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School

12Looking back to when I was growing up here in the 80’s and 90’s, Holmes Chapel was a very dierent place to what it is now. Smaller, and certainly a more intimate place to live, it was dicult sometimes to get away with anything without it coming back to your parents via the village telephone network! Back then, we were a tiny bit of a small country in a global society that was undergoing massive social change and boy, has the world we know now changed signicantly. I don’t know if you can remember the aids scares, the deaths of several beloved high-prole gay actors and musicians - confession, Freddie Mercury’s hit me the most as I had just gotten into Queen’s music thanks to a very extensive record collection of the family who I used to babysit for. As a child, I was unaware of Section 28 of the Local Government Act which made it illegal to teach or promote homosexuality in a positive way to school children, we just knew it was an insult if someone called you gay... To say it must have been a dicult time to be homosexual, with many people scared to be themselves, is a massive understatement. It took courage, and guts, and no insignicant amount of nerves to be openly gay back then. It was headline news if a celebrity was to ‘come out of the closet’, so just imagine how it must have been for a teenager or young adult to not know how to tell long standing friends that they were attracted to someone of the same gender, let alone someone who had been supressed from their true feelings for all their life.I remember one of my best mates agonising about coming out to our friendship group at the time. For me, it Holmes Chapel Pride 2024ByRich Jepsonmade not a jot of dierence to how I saw them, a big hug, a laugh about what took them so long, and we got on with the summer holidays. Looking back, it was extremely glib of me to not appreciate what it took for them to tell a 16/17 year old me. I’ve never told them this, but they will never stop being one of the bravest people I know.Back in June this year, we were asked the question of why Holmes Chapel didn’t have any annual Pride events. Could we hold an event to raise awareness of the issues and diculties aecting the lives of LGBTQ+ people in Holmes Chapel and our surrounding rural areas? Something to openly celebrate the diversity, identity, and strength of the LGBTQ+ community, creating a welcoming, inclusive environment where every participant can feel safe, respected, and celebrated... erm, no I didn’t know why we didn’t have one, and yes... I guess we could. The past few weeks have seen us research what goes into putting on a village event, talking with councils, volunteers, (lling in no-end of forms!) and local businesses about making this happen. Hoping that this event would stand as a beacon of acceptance, understanding, and pride for all of us, irrespective of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, disability, age, or religion. I’ve spent hours imagining how we could create an event that would be proactively promoting local support groups for LGBTQ+ people, providing a visible sign of hope that this is a diverse community in which to live, work and visit - particularly pertinent given how our village is now very much on the global stage thanks to The Village Partnership and their Harry Styles tours!I cannot profess to knowing just what the greater challenges for LGBTQ+ people living in rural communities like Holmes Chapel are, but hopefully through raising awareness we can help to improve these and create increased acceptance and understanding. Pride should be a celebration of the diversity within the LGBTQ+ community, but also something that goes to show how far LGBTQ+ rights have come, and how in some places there is still work to be done. Pride is about acceptance, equality, celebrating the work of LGBTQ+ people, education in LGBTQ+ history and raising awareness of issues aecting the LGBTQ+ community. Holmes Chapel Pride will be a free event, only made possible with your support. Support that will come from not just your time, but from your actions. We have started the fundraising process, and are hugely grateful for the support of local businesses so far, so let’s make September 28th a memorable day and show everyone that Holmes Chapel is welcoming to everyone.

It is stated that water was brought from pumps in buckets to bring the re under control as it was no use getting the re engine out because there was insucient water to feed it.Cottages behind the Church which escaped the re of 1753

According to the National Will Register two -fifths of UK adults do not have a valid Will in place. There are many myths surrounding Wills here are just some of the most common misconceptions below. When it comes to Wills do you know your facts from fiction?I DON’T NEED A WILL BECAUSE MY FAMILY KNOW MY WISHES.Legally when you pass away without a Will the rules of intestacy apply which states who will inherit from your estate. This will apply regardless of what you have verbally advised your family and friends. In some cases the wishes that you have verbally expressed to your loved ones contradicts what the law of intestacy states the law will prevail and the beneficiaries that inherit under the intestacy rules are under no obligation to redirect their inheritance to others that you wish to inherit from your estate. I DON’T NEED A WILL BECAUSE I DO NOT HAVE A LOT OF ASSETS.Many people think that Wills are for wealthy people when this is far from the case. Whatever your financial situation when you pass away you are entitled to have what you leave behind distributed to the people of your choosing. It is often the case that having your estate distributed in accordance with your wishes is best achieved by having a valid Will in place. I ONLY NEED A WILL WHEN I GET OLDER.This is a common misconception and this is often a thought that stems from not wanting to think about our own mortality. Unfortunately, nobody knows what the future holds and with that in mind it is best to have your personal affairs in order sooner rather than later as this will help those we leave behind at a time that is upsetting and stressful. It will also ensure that your estate goes to those you want to benefit from your estate. It is worth noting that Wills can always be updated as you move through life and your financial or personal circumstances change. I DO NOT NEED A WILL BECAUSE I AM MARRIED EVERYTHING WILL GO TO MY SPOUSE ANYWAY.Many people think that if they are married they do notneed a Will as their assets will automatically go to their spouse when they pass away and this may be true for some however this is not always the case. When someone passes away without a valid Will in place they are deemed to have died intestate and their estate is therefore subject to the intestacy rules under Part 3 and 4, Administration of Estates Act 1925 (AEA 1925). The legislation sets out who is entitled to inherit from your estate if you pass away without a Will. It should be noted that in the event that you are married when you pass away whilst your spouse would be first in line to inherit from your estate they may not inherit your entire estate if you have children as that will be determined by the value of your estate.Having a Will in place will ensure that your assets go to those you have specifically chosen. I CAN WRITE MY OWN WILL I DO NOT NEED A SOLICITOR.Yes, you can write your own Will without instructing a Solicitor however it is important to note that there are standard formalities as set out in Section 9, Wills Act 1837 (WA 1837) which must be adhered to in order for the Will to be valid. The standard formalities for executing a will are:• The will must be in writing and signed by testator. In special circumstances another person must sign it in their presence and at their direction.• It must appear that the testator intended by their signature to give effect to the will.• The signature must be either made or acknowledged in the presence of at least two witnesses present at the same time.• Each witness must sign the will, or acknowledge their signature, in the presence of the testator (but not necessarily in the presence of any other witness).Failure to meet these formalities will result in the Will being invalid.Another key thing to bear in mind is that solicitors and legal advisors are trained legal professionals that have the knowledge and expertise to consider relevant points that go beyond your wishes covering all the necessary legal points. There are certainly many benefits to having your Will drafted by a legal professional which can assist in saving tax and/or preventing complications with your estate that you may not have considered. 24For three decades Hil, founder of trundl, the unique UK walking for charity app, has lived in the Cheshire region and enjoyed many hours exploring its natural beauty. However, in her late forties, circumstances changed dramatically. Not only did she require urgent surgery on a compressed spinal cord, in 2021 she learned that her painful legs were a sign of undiagnosed hip-dysplasia. Finding herself thus unable to walk long distances quite literally changed Hil’s life. Always one to look for the positive, Hil’s slower walks around Holmes Chapel brought a new perspective on the physical and mental health benets that short walks can bring. This triggered the thought: What if an everyday walk could make a social dierence and what Walking for Happiness and CharityByHilary Mines, Founder of Trundlgreater impact could we all achieve together? In 2022, this idea came to life in the walking for charity app, trundl. But it stands on the shoulders of a lot of planning, as Hil shared with us:“I’ve long been passionate about a business idea that, in an aordable way, could motivate people to be active outdoors for their own health, while at the same time supporting UK charities. With a membership of just £3.99 per month, by pressing “Go trundling” on the app, everyday walks, dog-walks and hikes add up on the app’s community total, with no need to donate or raise funds yourself. When the set distance targets are met, we donate 30% of total monthly income to a rotation of charities we walk for. Invited brand partners match donations and extend oers to members. Our core charities are: National Parks; Dogs-for-Autism; Ramblers; Move Against Cancer; The Tree Council; Cheshire and Sussex Wildlife Trusts and Trussell TrustIt’s a win-win for all. Members gain a strong sense of physical and social good from tracking activity and personal charity impact. And through the CO2 Saver feature they can see the carbon they’re saving when they walk rather than drive. In return, charities are supported and brand partners bring oers and sponsorship. Importantly, there’s no advertising or data sharing. Ultimately, trundl’s all about the power of one person multiplied thousands of times to make a huge dierence to people’s lives and the natural spaces we love. We just need to spread the word and that’s why we’re so grateful that The Village Magazine have invited us to talk here”With The Peak District, numerous beauty spots and lovely villages and towns on our doorstep, this area is undoubtedly a hiker’s paradise. But it also oers many options to those who want shorter, more accessible walks. ‘’The one-to-two-mile walks, while gentler on my poorly hips, still bring amazing mental and physical benets. Particularly when I know each walk turns into a donation’’ nishes Hil ‘

32soft acidity, a maple syrup sweetness, and hints of pecan. As a milk-based coee, her House Blend presents milk chocolate and toee avours, ensuring a deliciously smooth coee. These beans are sold in bags, served by the cup at Celeste, and supplied to other coee shops. Additionally, there’s a Coee Club where members can indulge in the nest coee beans delivered right to their doorstep. Experience the richness and aroma of freshly roasted, specialty coee beans in the comfort of their own home. By joining the Coee Club, members receive two bags of coee delivered in the rst week of every month, along with exclusive discounts, oers, and events. Wine is also an important element at Celeste. The wine list is meticulously curated to represent the world and introduce new avour proles. Abda loves wine, and this is another area where she has expanded her skills. When choosing a wine for her shelves, the culture behind it is important to her. The menu features a range of wines from around the world, available by the glass or by the bottle, for in-house enjoyment or to take home. The next highlight of the business is the cocktails. Whether you’re after the classics or something a little dierent, Celeste oers a selection of drinks inspired by loved ones, family recipes, and avours close to their hearts. The menu features six core cocktails that form the basis for many others, ‘Solci Cocktails’ inspired by and created in honour of loved ones, and ‘Twisted Classics’ showcasing popular and classic cocktails with a unique Celeste air. The cocktails are crafted with fresh ingredients, high-quality spirits, and a whole lot of love and passion. They strive to make everything from scratch, and all drinks can be served gluten-free or vegan. Abda opened Celeste in dedication, memory, and celebration of loved ones, and she values community input. There is an opportunity to dedicate a cocktail to someone special. A simple form on her website allows you to describe the individual, suggest drinks or avours that represent them, and even propose a name for the cocktail. The Celeste team will then use their skills to design the cocktail, which could make it onto a future menu. The nal part of Celeste is the food. While they are a cocktail and wine bar, and not a restaurant, they oer a small selection of ‘mezza’ (Afro-Arab tapas) which are perfect to accompany your drinks, and also a collection of light brunch dishes throughout the In our last edition, we explored Abda’s journey up to the opening of her Northwich coee shop. During this period, she met the owner of Charlies. A pivotal conversation revealed that the premises were available, and everything aligned perfectly for Abda to expand her business. Thus, Celeste was born!Celeste is a harmonious blend of several key elements, starting with the coee. Abda, a seasoned coee expert and consultant, not only trains others but specically sought out a roaster with a high quality bean and similar ethos, called Abda’s House Blend. This two-bean specialty Arabica blend features beans from Guatemala, grown in the volcanic soils of tropical valleys, and from Cerrado Minas Gerais in Brazil. It creates a medium-bodied espresso with Katy meets... Abda, part 2by Katy O’Regandaytime. The food menu is a fusion of coee shop favourites, Afro-Arab cuisine, and tapas, inspired by Abda’s Sudanese and Egyptian culture, her travels, and family and friends located across the world. They serve both a brunch and tapas menu and are passionate about catering safely for allergies and special dietary requirements. While coee, wine, cocktails, and food are the main parts of Celeste, there is one thing that connects them all and threads through the entire business: culture. From the interior decor of the shop to the way the team works closely together and the values they hold, her team and her family culture are at the heart. Abda’s life experience and knowledge of the world are remarkable, and it is an honour that she has chosen to share this with the Holmes Chapel community. No town or village wants empty shops and premises; we also want a diverse mix of interesting businesses. Celeste has opened in our village at the perfect time, with businesses like Holmes Sweet Home expanding, our annual events becoming a rm xture, and our village welcoming more residents. Exploring culture through coee and food can help us open our minds to the world and experience so many wonderful things. You don’t need to travel far anymore, as Celeste is right on your doorstep.

It’s putting signicant pressure on General Practice in the CHOC PCN, as hospital waiting lists continue to grow which in turn increases patient demand at GP services.Annually GPs carry out around 400 million appointments across the NHS, over 30 million per month delivered in England. The Accurx online triage system here at the Health Centre continues to ourish, enabling your GPs to best meet the healthcare demands of you, their patients. As previously highlighted, all triage forms are reviewed Patient Participation Group Rich JepsonHolmes Chapel Health Centre PPGand responded to by a duty GP on the day, which ensures that all patients are being seen as quickly as possible and according to need. During this time of unprecedented demand, The team at the Health Centre thanks you for your continued support. To assist with demand, they are urging patients to use the Pharmacy First initiative. This enables them to deal with demand by redirecting the following health concerns to the pharmacy: Sinusitis, Sore throat, Earache, Infected insect bite, Impetigo (a bacterial skin infection), Shingles and Uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women.Local pharmacists are now able to oer medical advice including prescribing where appropriate for these conditions. This service is available for a walk-in service at the pharmacy. If you come through the triage system you may well be triaged to a local pharmacist for these conditions. We would encourage all patients to take advantage of this new service - if we all do, t is predicted that using the pharmacy rst initiative it could free up 30 million GP appointments annually across England. A further update with the onset of summertime, is regarding travel vaccinations. The surgery oers 4 free NHS travel vaccines these are: Polio, Typhoid, Hepatitis A and Cholera. For these vaccines the Practise requires 6-8 weeks’ notice. Please book as soon as possible via the triage system as an admin request. We unfortunately do not oer any other private travel vaccines, but if you require any alternative travel vaccinations, these are available at Holmes Chapel Pharmacy on the precinct (not the practice dispensary) or other local pharmacies. Prices for these are available from the individual pharmacy. There has been a request for help from the pharmacy team at the Health Centre. There is an urgent need for help in delivering medication to patients in Holmes Chapel and the surrounding villages who are unable to get into the pharmacy to collect their prescriptions. Help is needed for morning and afternoon shifts, and mileage will be paid to drivers. If you can spare a couple of hours, please get in touch with Hannah Kelly at the surgery. Finally, an update on the parking issues. The surgery is actively nding a solution to the ongoing parking situation. Problems are still being faced, with patients parking in sta spaces, & members of sta are continually needing to ask patients to move from doctors/ sta spaces. To answer the demand of a growing Holmes Chapel population the surgery has increased their workforce, creating demand for a large number of sta spaces. If the parking rules continue to not be adhered to, the surgery may have to close the car park to patients. Please do help us with this. If you are struggling to nd a space on the surgery car park, there is parking available next to the library and at the precinct, although this is expected to become chargeable soon.

52As you meander through your everyday life in Holmes Chapel, you might not realise the array of dedicated professionals tirelessly working to support our increasing number of residents who need care in their own homes. These professionals visit households across the area, providing vital assistance that enables residents to live independently. One organisation making a notable impact is Daski Ltd, a recent addition to our community that has rapidly expanded its team.I recently had the opportunity to chat with Sijabuliso, the entrepreneurial owner of Daski, who embarked on a journey from Zimbabwe to the UK as a young adult to train as a nurse. Leaving his family at the tender age of 17 was tough, but he found solace in the similarities between the educational systems and his prior connections with British culture through a pen pal. Sijabuliso highlighted the strong emphasis on academic success in Zimbabwe as a route to better opportunities, a stark contrast to the UK where determination and uncovering one’s unique talents can also lead to success. These dierences inspired Sijabuliso to launch his own care agency here in Cheshire. Now settled in Cheshire with his family, Sijabuliso draws on his connections back home to navigate the care sector’s stang challenges. His early career in various caregiving roles allowed him to rene his skills and deepen his industry knowledge, Katy meets...DaskiByKaty O’Reganlaying a solid foundation for his business. Sijabuliso’s personal experiences of moving countries give him a unique empathy towards his sta, particularly those relocating internationally. He strives to foster a family-like atmosphere within his team, mirroring the nurturing environment his aunt provided when he rst arrived in the UK.During our conversation, Sijabuliso outlined the wide range of personal care services Daski oers. “Our team assists with essential daily tasks such as bathing, showering, and hair washing, as well as nail and foot care, oral hygiene, and managing toilet visits,” he explained, stressing the importance of maintaining client dignity and comfort. He also delved into how they manage medication: “We ensure all medications are taken correctly and at the right times, crucial for maintaining health.”Food preparation services are another key aspect of their oering. “We prepare meals tailored to individual dietary needs, involving clients and their families in the meal planning process to ensure food is both nutritious and enjoyable,” said Sijabuliso.Acknowledging the heightened loneliness many have felt during the pandemic, he added, “Our care team also provide emotional and moral support, oering companionship during these challenging times.”Additionally, Daski supports clients with household upkeep and transportation to medical appointments, ensuring all aspects of care are covered.Sijabuliso ‘s business plays a crucial role in providing sta for an industry that has faced signicant recruitment challenges in recent years. His personal experience enables him to support the wellbeing of his sta eectively, ensuring they are content in their roles. This contributes immense value to what is already a rewarding job.

An election has come and gone with a new government in place. With it, comes the age-old question – What can it do for me?The truth is, right now, not a whole lot. Change takes time and those particularly high interest rates are likely to stay for just a little while longer. However, that isn’t to say that relief for small businesses isn’t going to happen. After all, new governments are quite keen on putting its stamp on things. Its rst move which has slipped under the radar, has been to introduce the Growth Guarantee Scheme which will see lenders support access to nance for small businesses over the next two years. It will eventually help 11,000 businesses access potentially thousands. It is designed to support sustainable growth rather than immediate cash injections, which for small businesses is a much better way of modelling where to put its capital. Bound by red tape? It’s time to break free…ByRich WilcockThis new scheme however is a drop in the ocean to what some companies need to grow. In fact, a third of small businesses would like better access to nance according to a new study and just under half of those asked in the study would like to see a drastic reduction in red tape. There is absolutely no denying that red tape is a huge burden on small businesses. I often think I’m avoiding it, by opting for simplicity (I know I’m not the only one) before realising that I’m being dragged down and held in place by bundles and bundles of red tape. It’s also hard to understand. As small business owners or freelancers, we do not have time to really digest what it means, nor the money to pay somebody to nd out. And in truth, its because much of the red tape that binds us to rules, lack simple common sense. But it a ects how we operate for sure. Fire safety, discrimination, health and safety, risk aversion and monetary handling are common areas where red tape a ects us, and we should all have a decent grasp of what is needed to comply in those areas. The truth is though, many don’t.Trade Associations are a good start to understand which side of the law you stand. Many are a key source of support for small rms, and help assist with limitations that companies face, especially with small businesses. And whilst they are not necessarily legal experts, they do prove invaluable at helping with rules and regulations.Sometimes it is a mindset. Patience with rules and regulations can help somebody understand them quicker or in a simpler context if they give themselves just a moment to think about it. Treating the rules as unwelcome, unnecessary or even meddlesome can set somebody up to fail. In a broader sense, red tape is less an unnecessary evil and more a friendly reminder of the world we operate in. Treating it as such can certainly help and not hinder your business.

I’ve been told that sometimes I get too nerdy and go too deep into a subject - I promise I didn’t get too oended by that at all! Just because I like a certain drink, doesn’t mean I should knock something that’s not been brewed on a farm by a bunch of bearded geeks just like me! This is something that we’ve seen at the bar during the European football. For the games we’ve shown, our 2 best selling drinks have been Homeister and Guinness. Good quality, uncomplicated drinks, that are easy to knock back when watching the footy - what’s not to like!Gin, whiskey, rum, any spirit can be enjoyed in the right company. Yes, ideally From the bar, with RichRich, The Beer Emporium Bottle Bankit shouldn’t give you the shudders when you drink it, and good ones denitely don’t do that! Just nd one that you like the taste of, and drink it - with coke, lemonade, tonic, whatever you want...It’s the same when it comes to wine. At its heart, wine should be something simple. To be enjoyed, with friends or on your own, it doesn’t matter. Quite often the narrative surrounding wine comes across as being a bit daunting, and overly complicated. It really doesn’t need to be.It’s for just that reason that Hope and her team at The Bottle Bank will be starting up the “Social Sippers beginners wine club” on the rst Tuesday of every month. This informal gathering will dispel some of the mysteries of the wine world by telling you all about the world of wine in a social and relaxed environment. Every month will see you try and enjoy a dierent glass of wine, taking you through a range of styles, discovering new wines to love and learning new things about them with your friends. For me, that’s all a really good drink is about. Having a good time with good people. What’s my favourite drink you ask? Just ask a very dear friend of mine, who noted at silly o’clock one morning when we were at a festival in an Oxfordshire eld, far too many years ago... tired happy faces looked up in disbelief from their blankets and hay bales when I asked if anyone wanted a cup of tea...Don’t forget to join the Facebook group by scanning the QR code or searching ‘Eat & Drink in Holmes Chapel’

A phrase we were used to hearing, but it isn’t 1950 anymore, and the advice of ‘putting your feet up’ during the baby-making process is a thing of the past! So, what really are the guidelines for pre-pregnancy, antenatal, and postnatal exercises?Let’s break these down in simple terms, starting with pre-pregnancy.Pre-pregnancyWhile attempting to conceive, or preparing for this phase of your life, it’s advantageous to be as healthy and physically active as possible, up to the point where the stress associated with extreme tness or a restricted lifestyle could become counterproductive. There are two main reasons to ensure optimal health and tness, and increased activity during this period:1. Conception can be a challenge for some more than others. One thing that is consistent for all, however, is that the healthier the body, the more eciently all its functions operate, including hormone regulation.2. Once pregnant, it’s not advised to start a new exercise routine, but maintaining your current activity level is recommended. If you hope to stay active throughout your pregnancy, you must plan ahead—start now!AntenatalThis period, from conception to birth, is an extremely personal one. The advice of your healthcare professional should always take precedence, along with listening to your body, but the general guidelines are to continue with your pre-pregnancy exercises and activity levels until your body tells you otherwise. Avoid activities that pose a high risk of falling or abdominal trauma.Exercise during pregnancy can provide numerous health benets, such as improved mood, reduced pregnancy-related discomforts, and potentially even a smoother delivery.Postnatal After the baby arrives, the postnatal phase begins, a crucial time for your body to recover and adapt to the changes it has undergone over the past nine months. Initially, postnatal exercises may focus on strengthening the core and pelvic oor to recover from childbirth. Your doctor/midwife might recommend starting with gentle activities such as pelvic tilts or walking, gradually increasing the intensity as your body heals and your energy levels permit.Exercise after childbirth can also help mitigate depression, improve cardiovascular tness, and support overall wellness. However, the approach should be gradual, and tailored to your personal recovery. No dierent to anybody else: Look after your body and your body will look after you! Exercise, in your condition?by JackJWC Health & Fitness

72had one daughter and was informed that her chances of conceiving after chemotherapy were only 1%. However, in 2017, following some health concerns, she was asked to undergo a CT scan. Before the scan, she took a pregnancy test, which revealed astonishing news: Sarah was pregnant with her son, Monty. This miraculous event was followed by the birth of her daughter, Poppie. During her breast cancer journey, Sarah met many individuals who provided immense inspiration and support. She always cherished the idea of recognising these remarkable people for their often unnoticed contributions. Having seen awards for business and sport, she realised there was nothing similar for those in the breast cancer community. This dream of honouring those unsung heroes led her to create the Buttery Breast Cancer Awards.Of course, this vision didn’t materialise overnight. Sarah meticulously developed her concept from the ground up, beginning with the name “The Buttery Awards.” She explains, “A buttery is delicate but has the strength and resilience to break through its chrysalis after being in darkness for a period of time, never giving up hope and believing it can emerge as a beautiful buttery in a new world.”On September 20th, 2024, the 2nd Buttery Breast Cancer Awards will be held at Vale Royal Abbey. I had the privilege of speaking with the inspiring Sarah Pickles, the visionary behind this remarkable event, to learn about her journey and the motivation for launching the ceremony in 2023.Sarah’s story is one of resilience and hope. In 2014, she was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer, embarking on a challenging treatment journey that included chemotherapy and a double mastectomy with reconstruction. At the time, she already Katy meets... Buttery Breast Cancer Awardsby Katy O’ReganThe buttery theme permeates the entire event, from the branding to the gift each winner receives: a beautiful living buttery ready to be released into their own gardens when they get home. The awards at the event have all been carefully considered. From women who are bravely navigating their own cancer journeys to those supporting others with breast cancer, Sarah has witnessed strength, hope, and connection on an extraordinary level.Sarah wanted to acknowledge the women who ourished, emerging with a renewed sense of purpose and achievement, harnessing the opportunity to transcend from their old selves and create new beginnings. Women who, despite their own challenges, support others through treatment, nding ways to help them shine or creating products, services, and businesses to make the experience easier for other breast cancer women.Sarah also recognises the many others playing vital roles in making a dierence to someone with breast cancer and their long road to wellbeing. From nurses, doctors, and support sta to neighbours, friends, and family, there is often an army of people lifting you up through little acts of kindness. She also has awards for those who provide a listening ear, a reassuring hug or note, giggles and tears over a cup of tea, a meal for the family on treatment day, help with the school run when you have an appointment, a baked cake left on the doorstep for the disturbed nights ahead, a fundraiser in your name—the list is endless. All are worthy of recognition, yet often go unnoticed by everyone else.A full list of the awards and how to nominate are on her website. You can also book tickets for the event or, if you are a business, perhaps sponsor something on the night.Sarah is also an accomplished author. She wrote a book about her own journey with the aim to help others going through the same. Sarah remembers how she had to learn quickly when she was diagnosed and hopes her experience will make it a little easier for someone in the same situation. Her book, The Shock Factor: Sarah’s Story - Beating Breast Cancer One Day at a Time, is also available to order on her website. The Buttery Awards are going to be a night of fun, entertainment, lovely food, Celebration, Recognition and inspiring stories, plus an opportunity to raise money for some vital breast cancer charities. The 2024 chosen charity is Prevent Breast Cancer, and they hope to beat the amount they raised last year, which was a huge £7,513.88. Sarah is a very busy lady. Not only does she have three children to look after, she also works most days at Celeste, a coee and cocktail bar in Holmes Chapel and she has recently set up her own breast cancer charity called ‘Beating Breast Cancer with Success’. Plus, she won’t rest after this year’s awards because next year’s event looks like it will be even bigger as she already has the venue booked: Chester Racecourse!I wish her all the best for The Buttery Awards 2024. I am sure the event will be a success and get bigger each year. For tickets, award nominations, or to nd out how to be a sponsor or donate an auction prize, go to sarahepickles.uk.

76Katrina Humphreys, a dedicated physiotherapist, has undergone a signicant transformation, shedding 2 stone and embarking on a new path to assist others in their weight loss journeys. After joining her local Slimming World group in Cranage - Holmes Chapel last year, Katrina dropped from 13 stone to 11 stone, despite facing challenges from Covid and Long Covid. Having lost one stone and recommitted to her weight loss journey, Katrina is now more determined than ever to help others. As a physiotherapist in the NHS and private practice, Katrina understands the impact of excess weight on health. She rmly believes that weight loss can improve both mental and physical well-being by reducing joint pain, easing heart strain, and enhancing overall life enjoyment.Katrina has recently trained as a Consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s largest Helping Others Achieve Their GoalsBy Katrina Humphreys, Slimming World Cranagegroup-based weight loss organization, at their national training academy in Derbyshire. She is set to take over the local group on July 26th, where members eagerly await her guidance.Katrina’s new role is underscored by concerning statistics: one in four adults in the UK are obese, a gure projected to rise to one in three by 2034. In Cheshire East, 64.8% of the population is overweight or obese, translating to approximately 8,424 individuals in the Holmes Chapel/Cranage/Goostrey area. Katrina’s mission to address this growing issue has never been more critical.Reecting on her journey, Katrina says, “Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK. When I rst joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight but now I just can’t wait to get started. After losing 2 stone and completing my training, it’s a privilege for me to be able to pass on the experience, insight, and understanding that helped me, so that I can give my members the support they need to get to their target.”Katrina stresses the importance of support in weight loss. She credits her success to the encouragement and understanding she received from her own Consultant and group. As someone who has faced the challenges of weight loss herself, she is dedicated to supporting her members all the way to their target weight. She highlights the signicance of setting targets, sharing recipes and ideas, and working together as a group to overcome challenges and celebrate success.Katrina found Slimming World to be dierent from other diets she had tried. The eating plan encourages the consumption of tasty, lling foods without hunger or deprivation. “I couldn’t believe I’d found a way to lose weight without starving myself,” she says. Moreover, Slimming World’s Body Magic programme promotes incorporating activity into daily routines, making it accessible for everyone.Slimming World Consultants, like Katrina, are former members who have successfully lost weight themselves. They run groups as micro-businesses in local communities, providing crucial support and guidance to members. Katrina is excited about the new challenges of running her own group, nding it a perfect t for her exible and rewarding career aspirations.Julie Bowden, who manages Katrina as a Team Developer, praises her positive outlook, experience as a physiotherapist, and supportive nature. Julie is condent that Katrina will be an exceptional Consultant, cheering her members on to their target weights.Katrina’s Slimming World group will meet at Cranage Village Hall every Friday at 7:30 am, 9 am, and 10:30 am starting July 26th.

80Just around the corner from Nantwich’s bustling main street, Webb House Furnishers beckons with the charm and warmth of a beloved family business. Since Howard Webb opened a small reupholstery shop in Crewe back in 1974, this enterprise has blossomed into a revered furniture retailer. Now celebrating nearly 50 years in business, Webb House has not only transformed a quaint 19th-century red brick building on Mill Street into a delightful 12,000-square-foot showroom spread over three oors, but also expanded with a new branch on Pepper Street in Nantwich earlier this year. Here, customers can peruse everything from plush lounge suites to chic dining sets and comfy bedroom furniture. The heart of Webb House beats with family values.Howard’s wife, Joan, joined in 1987, bringing a wealth of retail experience. Their children, Rebecca and Neil practically grew up in the aisles of the showroom. 81Just around the corner from Nantwich’s bustling main street, Webb House Furnishers beckons with the charm and warmth of a beloved family business.
