Safer motoring I t s here again autumn going on winter As road users are we ready for it Here are some items and hazards to consider Batteries are yours in good enough condition Autumn and winter conditions place an increased strain on car motorcycle and bicycle batteries We use more lights heated screens seats air conditioning and demisting systems during winter conditions Do not be caught out if your battery is struggling get it sorted out now before it lets you down whilst travelling Tyres how often do you check them on your vehicle Check your tyre pressures and tread depth 1 6 mm minimum across the whole surface of the tread in contact with the road Check them for sidewall cracks or splits We rely on them even more in winter than dry bright summer conditions Are you confident when driving in the dark You are likely to be doing more driving in the dark in the coming months If you do not feel confident should you be doing it Give the glass areas including headlights on your car or motorcycle a good clean and polish Cyclists make sure your lights and reflectors are clean The interior of the windscreens front and rear are particularly important Clean screens can lessen the effect of dazzle from oncoming vehicle headlights Low winter sun can be an issue It is a good idea to keep a pair of decent sunglasses in the car Early good use of windscreen sun blinds is also a good idea Now is the time to check the car s anti freeze for quantity and quality this may require a trip to the local mechanic to have it done properly Check your windscreen washer bottle more regularly during the winter months and use the correct solution of an antifreeze additive Check the condition of your windscreen wiper rubbers Make sure they clear the screen properly and show no signs of splitting apart or general wear With the help of a family member or friend go out and specifically check the operation of the car headlights side lights brake lights indicators and hazard lights Cyclists please check your lights brakes and tyres All vehicle users should allow a greater distance between themselves and the vehicle in front during inclement wet or snow conditions Leave cyclists and motorcyclists plenty of space Be aware that a build up of leaves on the road surface will produce an added skid hazard October through to December are considered the highest risk months for collisions with deer in the UK particularly at night Watch out for animals in general Halloween night and Bonfire night with its mists and smoky atmosphere can create extra hazards with more youngsters on the streets watch for them and try to give them a wide berth IAM RoadSmart Congleton and Macclesfield

Our local heritage A Grave Spelling Mistake Well more a WW1 Memorial spelling mistake because we now believe Eric Meacham with a C recorded on the Holmes Chapel Memorial was in fact Eric Measham with an S It is quite surprising that this error visible for so long has gone unnoticed but a number of factors contributed Firstly the memorial at St Luke s church was not created until after WW2 so it appears the name was copied from the Roll of Honour in the church where the original error seems to have been made We know an Eric Measham existed along with brothers Harry Fred and George from census records Those three brothers are also mentioned on the Roll of Honour with the same spelling mistake From his military records we know he lived at the Cranage Club now Cranage Village Hall for Thiepval memorial France 22 a while where he was probably working for the Carver family at Cranage Hall The Parish magazine of March 1917 states E Meesham is officially reported missing and in July 1917 Eric Measham missing since last July has been officially reported dead There is clearly confusion over the spelling of his name at the time and it appears that the wrong option was selected when the memorial was constructed It is probable that the family moved away shortly after the end of WW1 and so sadly were not around to point out the error Eric Measham has no war grave but he is recorded correctly spelt on the Thiepval Memorial in France Holmes Chapel U3A Local History Group Holmes Chapel War Memorial

PCSO report W e would like to focus this month on road safety and in particular parking outside of our local schools We are very aware that this has always been an issue raised by local residents and that the areas around our schools are perhaps not best suited to a high volume of cars to park However we need your support urgently to ensure you are not obstructing roads or pavements around the schools We have had an increase in reports of vehicles double parking blocking the pavements and abandoning cars on the yellow zig zag lines None of the above is acceptable and if you are found to be in contravention of any of these you could be handed a fixed penalty notice of 30 00 We are also looking to start our junior safety officers project with the local primary schools The junior officers will help us educate people who are parking dangerously and inappropriately As we start to see the weather turn colder and we have noticed frost ice or snow in the area we would like to take this opportunity to remind you to leave enough 26 time in the morning before your journey to ensure your vehicle is fully defrosted and not left on the driveway unattended as it can only take a second for someone to take belongings from a vehicle or the vehicle itself We would recommend perhaps putting together your own winter car kit including a windscreen scraper deicer and ensure you have the necessary fluids to top up your car with Once a week every week we also hold a local community meeting in Holmes Chapel for an hour where I will be available This is an opportunity for the public to come and have a chat to us and the dates can be found at cheshire police uk localpolicing crewe dane valley alternatively the dates are also posted outside of Holmes Chapel Community Centre Station Road If you are interested in more of our activity please follow us on social media where we are able to speak directly to you as our community about incidents and crimes we are finding in the area Please like our Facebook page Dane Valley Police or follow or Twitter account DaneValleyPol Liz Chesters PCSO

Rum I n the last of our mini series on rum we ll finish off with a little bit of a rum cocktail master class with 3 wonderful recipes Don t panic there s no need to come over all Tom Cruise turn your kitchen into a bar these cocktail recipes can be made using basic cupboard ingredients just make sure you use good quality rums no Bacardi s as your base Where any cocktail calls for a simple syrup it s just 1 or 2 cups of sugar dissolved in 1 cup of water so don t think it s something exotic If you do want to make it more fanciful feel free to use demerara coconut or palm sugars instead noting the darker the sugar the darker the cocktail will end up The rum daiquiri is a genuine classic cocktail epically simple yet often done badly thanks to so many supermarket kits All you need are 3 ingredients a great light rum fresh limes simple syrup Add 2 shots of rum 1 shot of freshly squeezed lime juice shot of simple syrup shake with ice strain serve in a martini glass with a lime twist Too sharp add a touch more syrup too sweet knock the syrup back a touch It literally is as easy as that Now a Pina Colada will either conjure up images of 70 s dinner parties or sun kissed Caribbean beaches which one is up to you but as a drink it is rich creamy fruity dangerously drinkable It s also a 36 massively tweakable cocktail so feel free to play around with the rums you use as the base Add 2 shots of rum 2 shots of fresh pineapple juice the fresher the better here if you have a juicer now s the time to whip it out 1 5 shots of cream of coconut coconut milk will be thinner slightly less sweet but will mix easier so it s a trade off between taste ease of making Shake it as hard as you can for as long as you can over ice pour into a tumbler or mason jar sit back relax Lastly now we re getting into winter the realm of log fires you should try a hot buttered rum instead of a mulled wine or hot toddy It s a sweet rich warming drink that can either be made up individually or in batches that just need making up as and when needed Take a tablespoon of softened butter a teaspoon of brown sugar a shake of ground cinnamon nutmeg allspice a couple of drops of vanilla extract put into a coffee cup or handled glass Stir or muddle it up till you have a rich spicy smelling paste then add 2 shots of dark rum A quick stir again then add 5 shots of hot but not boiling water Stir plonk yourself down in front of that fire with a good book enjoy want it a bit richer add a bit more butter need a bit more spice add a little more it s a simple as that Rich The Beer Emporium

Walkies T he Important of exercise for you and your dog Exercise is essential for all dogs It helps to keep them fit with training provides opportunity for socialisation and promotes physical mental health The PDSA recommends between 30 minutes and up to 2 hours of exercise play per day dependant on the breed type of dog you have Yet Research shows that thousands of dogs never get walked at all Not getting enough exercise can cause many problems including health problems such as obesity muscular cardiovascular or metabolic diseases and behavioural problems that often manifest as barking digging chewing urinating and defecating in the house becoming agitated or aggressive are all potentially signs of a frustrated dog If your dog is showing any of these signs increased exercise may help them Exercise is also a chance for you to spend quality time with your dog A dog is the only thing on this earth that loves you more than he loves himself Josh Billing Off Lead exercise There are several advantages to exercising your dog off lead Your dog will walk run further than if they were on lead therefore are 38 likely to burn off more energy Most dogs love to run and unless you can keep up they will not be able to run as much as they would choose to by being on a lead It will save you a lot of extra work if your dog is able to run on its own You can play games with your dog that are not possible when on lead such as fetch Hide and seek Chase Most dogs love interacting with their humans and if your dog is mentally stimulated this also tires them out further Your dog is likely to be more relaxed off the lead Leads are restrictive and your dog will know that it can t move freely Some dogs are lead reactive this is normally because during encounters with other dogs people etc the dog feels at a disadvantage as it is more limited in movement However for your dog to walk off lead they will need to be trained in recall particularly if they are not keen on socializing with other dogs you will also need to find suitable places to allow your dog some off lead time Stephanie Cheadle Safe Hound Secure Dog Exercise Area

Remember remember C heshire firefighters want residents to stay safe on bonfire night or whichever night they might be celebrating the discovery of the gunpowder plot and are encouraging them to attend organised displays The bonfire period is one of the busiest times for firefighters often dealing with nuisance deliberate fires They want the public to enjoy their celebration but to do so safely It is much safer to attend an organised bonfire or firework display but if you re thinking of organising your own bonfire as part of your celebrations please follow the safety advice on our website so that everyone has a good time while staying safe You will also find a list of organised bonfires and fireworks displays in your area Station Manager Andy Gray Deliberate Fire Reduction Manager for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said This is always a busy time of year and we work closely with police local authorities and youth projects to educate and involve the local community in a bid to keep communities as safe as possible 40 and the number of incidents of deliberate fires as low as possible Safety is the number one priority and our advice would always be to go to an organised display People might see starting a small bonfire or setting off fireworks as a bit of harmless fun but fire is unpredictable and can easily get out of control and spread and accidents can happen with fireworks We will be monitoring high activity areas throughout this period You can also do your bit to reduce the likelihood of deliberate fires by ensuring wheelie bins and rubbish are not left out in the open once your bin has been emptied please ensure you put it away securely Fires lit prior to bonfire night or fires which are near to property trees or fences on the day itself will be extinguished by crews if they are deemed unsafe or if they have been left unattended by adults To report unlit dangerous bonfires that require removal please call 0300 123 5011 Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service

Health W ell we are well and truly in the depth of Autumn now I love the crisp sunny days but definitely not the damp grey ones This time of year is always bad for the emergence of those horrible winter bugs This month I thought I d share some natural ways you can boost your immune system to help you stay one step ahead of those winter bugs Get enough sleep and manage stress Sleep deprivation and stress overload increase the hormone cortisol prolonged elevation of which suppresses immune function Being a reflexologist I am very aware of the effects stress has on the body and immune function Reflexology is a great way to reduce stress improve your sleep and give your immune system a boost Reduce alcohol consumption Excessive consumption impairs the immune system and increases vulnerability to lung infections Eat plenty of vegetables fruits nuts and seeds These will provide your body with the nutrients your immune system needs Make sure you get a good variety as this increases the variety of vitamins and minerals in our diet Eat the rainbow Consider probiotics Studies indicate supplements reduce the incidence of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections Fermented milk products have also been shown to reduce respiratory infections in adults and kids Stop smoking It undermines basic immune defences and raises the risk of bronchitis and pneumonia in everyone and middle ear infections in kids 42 Vitamins and minerals As well as being great for your bones vitamin D is essential for maximum efficiency of your immune system Make sure you get some sun exposure or consider taking a supplement in the winter months Zinc is also essential for lots of the functions of the immune system Vitamin C is also a really important powerhouse of the immune system and is also a free radical scavenger which protects against infectious diseases Consider natural antimicrobials Honey Quite a bit of research exists on the benefits of honey as a natural immune booster natural anti inflammatory agent and antimicrobial agent I love warm water with a teaspoon of honey and half a squeezed lemon for an extra hit of vitamin C Garlic This superfood has very strong antimicrobial and antiviral properties Heat does destroy the active compounds so it best added to food just before serving Supplements can interact with some medicines though so always check if you are on regular medicines that garlic is ok with them Ecinachea This herbal remedy is great to try if you get a cold to help fight the virus Exercise We all know it is good for us but as well as helping us feel great regular exercise does help to give our immune systems a boost Well keep cosy and I hope trying some of these simple ideas will help to keep you fighting fit this autumn Karen Cheshire Clinical Reflexology

Student views A nti social behaviour isn t a huge issue in Holmes Chapel yet it is still one we must discuss Most of the children in this area are very well behaved and respectful of the people around them aware that they share the village with people of all ages both older and younger However there is a minority who give us teenagers a bad reputation and I think that as a teenager myself it is important to stress that it is just a minority who give us this stigma The representation of knife crimes and gang behaviour depicted by the media does not do us any favours either Recently we PCSO come into assemblies and discuss anti social behaviour especially around through unacceptable behaviour that they did not want to see on Halloween such as throwing eggs and damaging property They also made us aware of the consequences of being involved with antisocial groups and the impact this can have in later life 44 which was informative It s also important to mention that though it would never happen in Holmes Chapel the police did emphasise the danger of knife crimes As a teenager I am very aware that hanging out in groups in Holmes Chapel especially by the precinct can look intimidating and that older children in the parks do sometimes scare younger children Part of the youth councils recent aims is to provide a youth shelter where older children can hang out with their friends where it does not scare or disturb others We have been working on this project over the summer and so far have sent out a survey and collated results based on favoured locations styles and when it would be used We are doing this to reduce antisocial behaviour in the village and hope to overwrite the negative image that some have given us Bella Mac HC6FC

Grandma s kitchen Our garden has provided a lot of fruit this year and the last of this comes from our pear tree on these autumn evenings we griddle some of the pears to make a tasty warm salad Method Slice the pears lengthways approximately 1 2cm thick making sure to remove the core carefully with a sharp knife There is no need to peel the pears Put the pear slices in a bowl and drizzle 1tbsp of olive oil over them Heat a griddle pan over a high heat and place the pears in the pan for approximately 2 minutes on each side You may need to cook in 2 batches as they must be cooked in a single layer Set aside to cool Make the dressing by mixing the remaining olive oil white wine vinegar and honey in a bowl use a small whisk to mix the ingredients and add some black pepper and a pinch of sea salt to taste Arrange the salad leaves in a large bowl and place the cooled pear slices on top Lightly toss in the chopped walnuts and crumbled blue cheese drizzle the dressing over the salad and serve immediately Delicious with freshly baked soda bread or a chunk of crusty bread 48 Chargrilled Pear Blue Cheese Walnut Salad 2 Large firm pe ars 2 tbsp Extra Vi rgin Olive Oil 1 tbsp White Wine Vinegar 1 tbsp Cheshi re Honey Ground black pepper Sea salt 120g Mixed sa lad leaves of your choice 100g Blue chee se crumbled 40g Chopped walnuts

Fitness D iscipline has been our accidental word of the week following a run of the mill Instagram post which subsequently gained a lot of traction amongst our followers The post read You can t always be motivated which is why you must be disciplined The post was challenged and the question was put forward Does discipline really exist and is the word too harsh for an increasingly softer world First my opinion I guess it depends on your personality type and what makes you as a person tick For me I m quite a matter of fact person and would prefer a firm kick than gentle guidance I want somebody to tell me to shut up and get on with it not to hold my hand and talk about my feelings That said I m more than aware that just within JWC s members we have many people who require many different techniques to stay motivated Now for what our followers had to say Following this post I put the question 54 forward to the world of social media and the overwhelming majority of people found that the word discipline worked for them It meant something to them They understood it To summarise The general consensus was that the word discipline resonates with a lot of people however for some this may need adapting to seem less intimidating Ultimately if your barrier to keeping in shape is a tendency to scoff biscuits or if you re weekly wine consumption is through the roof it s going to take discipline to curb that If you struggle to drag yourself out of bed for a morning workout and that s the only time of day that you can make it work for you then it s going to take discipline to get into that routine I m glad that the post was challenged I think we should always question and be critical especially when it comes to our health and wellbeing This is how we begin to understand ourselves and the people around us Jack JWC Health Fitness

Business ideas W hy does your Local business need marketing There is only ONE reason if people can t see you then they ll pick your competitor Without customers your business would not survive To attract and retain customers your business needs to understand the value of marketing People are unlikely to simply walk into your business and buy something from you if they don t know who you are what you are selling and why they should choose you over the competition who are already doing that marketing to get noticed Many smaller businesses don t place enough importance on marketing They often see it as something that requires a lot of money and fancy advertising campaigns But you don t need the budget of Coca Cola to market effectively For example with no money you can allocate a couple of hours of your time to promote your business through your social media channels With a small amount of money you can place a print advert advertise online and social media Whatever you do however you need to be consistent And here s why before any of your marketing is acted on your prospects need to go through four stages Recognise Read React and Remember 1 Recognise When someone first spots your advert it flags you up in their sights They see you take a quick look and then most likely move on 2 Read The second time someone spots you they pay more attention they read what you ve got to offer and understand you a bit more 56 3 React Generally when someone spots your advert for the third time they get a sense of d j vu But even though the process of recognition has started and they may like what you ve got to offer the timing may not be right Other priorities such as a boiler to replace or Great Uncle Ray s 100th birthday present to buy might mean their cash is put to use elsewhere At this stage however you are on their radar 4 Remember While your marketing communications are important to you this isn t always so with your prospects even if they specifically requested them They may lose or misplace them throw them away accidentally deleted them or spilt their coffee on it There may also be the slim possibility that you haven t encouraged them to take immediate action So to help them remember the key weapon to your marketing success now is Repetition R epetition Bear in mind that your marketing communications are in competition with so much other marketing that to convert your prospects into buyers you need to keep in touch with them repeatedly before they will finally be motivated to act Repetition builds familiarity which in turn helps build credibility and encourages people to do business with you

Let s talk legal V aluing property in divorce If you have taken the decision to separate from your partner it is tempting to leave sorting out financial matters or to rush into an agreement without first getting up to date valuations of property and other assets What property should be valued in your divorce Most separating couples assume that only the family home needs to be valued as part of their divorce financial settlement However all relevant property should be valued What is relevant property depends on the personal and financial circumstances of a husband and wife Property can be owned in the sole name of a husband or wife and still be relevant property If a husband and wife are splitting up then they should consider valuing The family home Any holiday home or rental property Any property owned by a family business because if property is included in the company business accounts the company shares cannot be accurately valued unless there is an up to date valuation of the property Any property held within a pension fund such as a SIPP Property owned by a third party if a husband or wife has a beneficial interest in the property An expert divorce solicitor can advise on if property should be valued and the best way to obtain an accurate valuation The advice may depend on factors such as the length of the marriage or when a property was last valued and the purpose of the valuation 60 Valuing property in financial court proceedings If property and assets are not valued as part of negotiations or court proceedings then the financial settlement can result in unfairness to the husband or wife If a couple cannot agree on the value of property the couple can decide or the family court can order a valuation by a single joint expert A single joint expert is Independent and impartial of both husband and wife Not influenced by whether the property is owned jointly by the husband or wife or with a third party The expert is focussed on the value of the property and not its ownership Divorcing couples can worry about the cost of getting assets valued However given the importance of knowing how much property is worth it is always sensible to get expert advice before deciding on a financial settlement The cost of this advice and preparing any legal documentation is tiny compared to the cost and stress involved if something goes wrong without the right valuations and divorce documentation in place Evolve Family Law
